For the final chapter of season six, American Horror Story focuses on the "final girl" Lee Harris played by Adina Porter. Expanding on its "found footage" themes, the show segments out the story with a Paleyfest reunion, a court room documentary, a Lana Winters interview show, and a ghosthunters rip off called Spirit Chasers. All this before Lee Harris faces her ultimate sacrifice. Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Ten. The season wraps with "Chapter 10" - find out how well it concluded on this episode.

Season 6 Episode 10 – "Chapter Ten"

With "Chapter 10" season six of American Horror Story comes to an end. This season, the show thinks outside its own box bringing a different format to the season, following a cast of characters that string together a single, focused narrative. It begins with "My Roanoke Nightmare" telling the story of Matt and Shelby Miller who purchase a home with a horrific history. Their story is told in flashbacks with another cast recreating their experiences. For the second section, AHS goes full on found footage as the producers of "My Roanoke Nightmare" bring back the cast to return to the property for "Return to Roanoke: Three Day in Hell" where all hell breaks loose. With the final chapter, the show throws a whirlwind of TV style shows at its audience as Lee Harris ends the show. The show is more focused than prior seasons and has fun establishing a whole new crop of monsters and villainy. How can you forget The Butcher, The Piggy Man, the Chens, the Nurses, Edward Mott and the Polks. Horror abound.

For the final episode of covering season six, Christopher, Dave, Derek, and Doc recap the final episode where not everyone is a fan of every segment but end up enjoying the final show regardless. Even with some whispers of it being anti-climatic, the Grue-crew favor a number of the events in the show with the Spirit Chasers winning the most favor. And how great was it to see Lana Winters from season two once again bringing her back to AHS in a natural manner that makes perfect sense. AHS is firing on all cylinders. Before this episode is over, the Grue-crew also dive into their expectations, hopes, and guesses at what season 7 may hold.

By the end of Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell chapter 9 the second arc of American Horror Story Season 6 wraps, revealing its final girl. But, it is not all neat and tidy. This final girl is also...the big bad! What?! Yes, American Horror Story continues to give its horror tropes an added twist this season as Lee, who is a confessed murderer and now possessed by the witch is in cahoots with The Butch, slaughtering the remaining cast, is the last survivor.  Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Nine. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow as the story completes its second arc, Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell.

Season 6 Episode 9– "Chapter Nine"

Running low on bodies to throw mercilessly into The Butcher's arms, American Horror Story not only returns Wes Bentley into the mix but also introduces a trio of My Roanoke Nightmare fans and bloggers. Lead by Tiassa Farmiga, the over ambitious bloggers, fully equipped with Go-pro helmets and selfie sticks, trespass onto the land and suffer the fate of the Blood Moon. The episode is tight and linear, leading up to the final scenes of shocking horror as The Butcher and Lee dispatch of the remaining cast until only Lee is the surviving member. Christopher, Derek and Doc all agree the show is back on track after episode 8 and are aghast at the horrifying fate of Sophie, Todd, Milo, and Dylan. Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell ends with a bloody punch and a promise of a chilling Chapter 10.

For perhaps the first time, the hints and promises the American Horror Story marketing team (along with Ryan Murphy) dish out during the season pays off in a big way. The first nine episodes of American Horror Story: Roanoke are fantastic and it appears that Chapter 10 will be a fascinating look at what it all means. The AHS Grue-crew not only reflect on this episode, the past eight prior but speculate on what next week will bring. And, they are incredibly exciting at the return of Lana Winters from Season 2, Asylum, who will be interviewing Lee after her murder trial.

The cast dwindles as the body count rises, before the end of Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell chapter 8 only three will remain. The Polks have Lee, Audrey, and Monet captured as Cain Polk puts it into perspective, "Momma says fear and exhaustion gives the jerky a sweet tang." Chilling! Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Eight. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow as the story shifts gears into Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell.

Season 6 Episode 8– "Chapter Eight"

The anti-penultimate episode of Season 6 takes its toll on the cast of American Horror Story as two more falls victim to the curse of the Blood Moon. Shelby and Dominic suffer horrible fates while both Audrey and Lee pay for their freedom with tooth and flesh. Monet darts from the grasp of the Polk family with two in hot pursuit unaware that Mama Polk and Cain are breathing no more. Unable to escape the horrors of the house trapped by The Butcher surrounding the house, Shelby gives in to despair, leaving Dominic to take the blame once Lee and Audrey return. Tossed out into the hallway alone, Dominic faces the Pigman monster with a gruesome conclusion. The episode is full of monsters, ghosts, cannibals and blood.

Much to Christopher G. Moore's dismay, Wes Bentley appears in the final frames of chapter 8 as Dylan the actor who played the Butcher's son in the reenactments. Yes, groans aplenty. The grue-crew as a bit disappointed with this week's episode as it meanders around feeling like so much padding. While Christopher, Dave, Derek, Doc each admit that there are moments in the show that creeped them out, the show as a whole was the first last-luster hour of season 6 - a pretty good track record for AHS. There is too much Polk and not enough Butcher. Doc ends the episode with a theory that the production team is still behind the madness and there's a lot of wool being pulled over our eyes. Time will tell.

Oct 29, 2016

Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates), the actress who played The Butcher, turns out to be the craziest of them all, attacking the producers and stars of Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell. However, it is Dominic Banks (Cuba Gooding jr.) who rings in the favorite quote for this week, "Now, let me ask you something else, judgmental M*therf*ckers, what's more important than screen time, huh?" Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Seven. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow as the story shifts gears into Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell.

Krista Berutti from Horror Pack joins the Grue-crew this week to explore the horrors of Chapter 7!

The American Horror Story Fan Podcast: My Roanoke Nightmare
Season 6 Episode 7– "Chapter Seven"

As the body count rises, the bloodshed deepens and the mayhem doubles three times over. The "stars" of Return to Roanoke: Three Days of Hell have little hope for survival. Between Agnes roaming the countryside with her bloodied meat cleaver, the ghosts of the Miller house and the Polk family serving up their special recipe for beef jerky, the cast is doomed. They're all doomed. Well, except one! But who will that be. The choices narrow down quickly this week as Matt, Sidney and a few others meet their end this week.

The "real" ghosts begin to come out of the woodwork while the "real" terror of the Polk family sinks their teeth into Lee (Adina Porter), Audrey (Sarah Paulson) and Monet (Angela Bassett). Edward Mott rears his ugly head in the tunnels beneath the house, the Piggy-Man chases Dominic and Shelby, and the Butcher (Susan Berger) makes a sudden, gruesome appearance. But it may the shocking turn of events when Shelby catches Matt hunkering down with the witch in the basement that takes the cake. American Horror Story rocks!

The more producer Sidney reveals the secrets behind those involved in making My Roanoke Nightmare, the more characters on top of characters we get. Hot, damn! And Kathy Bates  playing Agnes Mary Winstead, the actress who played The Butcher, turns out to be the craziest of them all. She goes off the deep end uttering "I shall smite thee, limb from limb, the way a falcon tears a rabbit!" Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Six. Season 6 Episode 6– "Chapter Six"

We were told they were going to turn things upside down on episode 6 and that they damn well did. It may not be as "surprising" as everyone on the podcast was looking for but the show has certainly gone down a new and exciting road. Seven of the cast from the first 5 episodes join Cheyenne Jackson as he begins filming season two of his hit television show. This go around it is more like Big Brother with scares, to quote the show itself. The format is a combination of reality TV and found footage making Doc Rotten one happen camper!

While Lily Rabe, Andre Holland, and Adina Porter return as Shelby, Matt and Lee, the rest of the cast return playing the actors who played their roles in the reenactments. Sarah Paulson, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Angela Peters return as Audrey Tindall, Dominic Banks, and Monet Tumusiime who played Shelby, Matt, and Lee during the reenactments. To spice things up, they throw in Evan Peters as Rory Monahan who portrayed Edward Phillipe Mott. Now, he is married to Audrey to give everything a color of soap opera. Before we know it, a number of the ghost characters appear: the nurses, the pig man, the little girl, the Butcher (maybe) and a jarring burnt gentleman that is most likely Lee's husband. A couple of great scares, lots of fun thrills and a few laughs. American Horror Story rocks!

Oct 16, 2016

Finally, Evan Peters returns as Edward Phillipe Mott who is the originally owner of the house the Millers currently reside, to their horror. "I love them, you know? The Paintings. Even more than I love you. But first let's rouge each other's nipples." he delights as he prefers his cherished paintings over his lover. Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Five. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow.

Season 6 Episode 5– "Chapter Five"

Out of the frying pan and into the fire, the more Matt, Shelby, and Flora try to escape The Butcher's grasp the more trouble they find themselves buried under. Edward Phillipe Mott guides them out of the house - but not before being terrorized from the creepiest of spider women creatures ever - into the nearby woods only to drop them into the lap of the Polk family. Frances Conroy returns to AHS as Mama Polk and she has never been more frightening than in this episode as the beef jerky making hillbilly. "Rancid!" Look out Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Then, once the Polks make their trade with The Butcher, things continue to escalate. The show is gory, scary and paced to race to the end of the first story arc, wrapping up the story - or so we think - of the Millers.

Even though award winning director is on the road to Fear Fete where his film Knob Goblins is showing, Christopher shares his love for this particular episode. Doc agrees with him saying it may be his favorite episode of the entire show, every season, with only the Pepper episode from Freak Show challenging its title. Dave and Derek are not too far behind either as the Grue-crew discuss the highlights of the episode. Elias' poor demise, the exit of one Polk family member, the entirety of Evan Peters' performance, the return of Fances Conroy and the fiery death - maybe - of The Butcher. Check it out!

Oct 10, 2016

The manic Dr. Elias Cunningham (Denis O'Hare) reappears to warn the Millers about the house, pleading they follow his advise "So. Now you understand the danger. The first quarter moon rises tonight. We have to leave, right now." Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Four. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow. And why, Cricket, why!?!?

Season 6 Episode 4– "Chapter Four"

American Horror Story: Roanoke continues to get better and better with each episode. This episode brings back a splatterific orgy of gore and shocks as the Pig-man Monster returns, the Jane Sisters are torn apart (literally), and see far more of our beloved Cricket than we ever expected. Kathy Bates is killing it as The Butcher carving up the cast left and right. The images are scary and frightening. And the performances are incredible: Cuba Gooding Jr. reaches for the Emmy as his character struggles to deal with the aftermath of last episode's reveal.

Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore and Derek Tatum drop everything to bring this episode together at the last minute. Previously scheduled to appear at Spooky Empire in Orlando, Florida, the crew were prepared to skip this episode and double up next week. But, then, Mother Nature stepped in and surprised the entire East Coast. Plans changed. Christopher and Doc shifted from going to Spooky Empire (which had to cancel the event due to the life threatening weather) and headed to Monsterama in Atlanta, Georgia instead. A huge thank you to the crew at Monsterama for hosting American Horror Story Fan podcast (along with Horror News Radio). Derek (who was also at Monsterama!) joins Christopher and Doc to discuss what they call  the best show of the season yet! Dave Dreher will return next week to provide his thoughts.

The enigmatic psychic Cricket (Leslie Jordan) drops in on Matt and Shelby, slapping Thomasin (Kathy Bates) with his proclamation "Oh, honey, this land does not belong to the dead. You're the trespasser!" Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Three. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow. Among the feral children and crispy burnt bodies, is the veil beginning to crack to the talking heads format?

Season 6 Episode 3– "Chapter Three"

American Horror Story: Roanoke continues to impress as a new character is introduced to tie everything together. Who saw Cricket coming? What a pleasant surprise. The diminutive actor channels Zelda Rubinstein's Tangina from Poltergeist to do battle with The Butcher, once known as Thomasin White (Kathy Bates) and steals the episode from Cuba Gooding Jr, Sarah Paulson and Angela Bassett. The mystery behind the house, the pigs and the disappearance of young Flora deepens as the Millers continue to explore their land and those that inhabit it.

Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum welcome back Christopher G. Moore to look at the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke as a number of interesting events begin to shape this season. One in particular catches Derek's attention as the camera pulls back from the talking head version of Lee (Adina Porter). For the first time, AHS reveals the film team behind the show, proving glimpses of the set, the crew and the voice behind the interviews. Is that Cheyenne Jackson we hear? Could be. Also, Lady Gaga takes a more mysterious role this season as a tree spirit of some sort, creating The Butcher out of a dying Thomasin White. And, yeah, those feral children...what the heck?!

Sep 24, 2016

Matt struggles with reality while discovering "Oh, I feel sick to my stomach. I didn't think it could get any worse. Then it did." The Millers, along with Sister-in-Law Lee, face horror after horror this episode as burning pig effigies and little girl ghosties plague their nightmares. And that's not the worst they have to face. Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Two. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow. And where in the world is missing co-host Christopher G. Moore?

Season 6 Episode 2– "Chapter Two"

This week American Horror Story gives its feverish fans glimpses of the roles fan-favorites are going to play this season with Kathy Bates, Wes Bentley and Lady Gaga appearing as a group of pagans firing up their pit of horror in the woods. But before we can ask "Is that Lady Gaga?" their gone and we're back at the mansion. We do get introduced to a lovely pair of murderous maidens in the form of sister nurses Miranda (Maya Rose Berkos) and Bridget (Kristen Rakes). Lee's daughter Flora (Saniyya Sidney) also stops by for a visit and discovers a lonely ghost named Priscilla hiding in the closet. But its the introduction of Dr. Elias Cunningham (Denis O'Hare) that has Shelby and Matt worried the most as his found footage tape reveal some of the house's most violent secrets.

The Grue-crew give their thoughts on all the major plot points, scares and surprises. They dive into some interesting news from the past week, including Ryan Murphy revealing something interesting about episode 6. And, it's time for some listener feedback, featuring a special message from past co-host Thomas Mariani.

Sep 17, 2016

The sixth season of American Horror Story is here! Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk pulled a fast one on AHS fans by refusing to reveal the theme of this season, right up to the very premiere of Season 6 Episode 1. What we found as we tuned in 10:00 PM Wednesday, September 14, 2016 was a brand new format and a slower pace. Murphy and Falchuk introduce a couple who have moved into a potentially haunted house in North Carolina. Matt and Shelby are interviewed talking head style played by Andre Holland and Lily Rabe. Meanwhile, the reenactments feature Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson portraying the lead characters. Before the end of the episode they are joined by Adina Porter and Angela Bassett playing Matt's sister Lee.

Episode 12 – Be Our Guest

Doc, Thomas, Dave and Christopher are all back to recap and review the finale of Hotel, the fifth season of American Horror Story. Let's just get this out of the way, Denis O'Hare is divine! He is the heart of this season and rocks this episode as Liz Taylor. Give this man an Emmy now, please. A good portion of the finale steers the remaining casts into a good place, a happy place; but, this being American Horror Story, we all know things never end up all that well - at least in a traditional way. The Countess, James March, Devil's Night, John Lowe, Ramona Royale - and even Tristan - are all accounted for by the end. And with that, the doors of the Hotel Cortez close...for now.

Episode 11 – Battle Royale

Doc, Thomas and Christopher return with the New Year to tackle the last two episodes of American Horror Story: Hotel beginning with Battle Royale. Even with the amount of disdain for John and Alex Lowe by many of the co-hosts, they are impressed with how his story finally intertwines with that of The Countess - as is James March. Liz and Iris continue to steal the show from the rest of the cast; however, the return of Gabourey Sidibe challenges their roost at the top. The thrills include the final fate of the countess, Hypodermic Sally's twisted back story and the battle royale between a vampire, a witch and a ghost. Good times!

Episode 8 – The 10 Commandments Killer

The gang is all together once again to share their thoughts on the latest episode of American Horror Story: Hotel, but why - oh, God, why - did it have to be an episode dedicated solely to Wes Bentley's John Lowe. Do they not know how much Thomas and Christopher have been panning this role...and actor. The show reveals one of the weakest mysteries of its history as it slowly has John Lowe come to grips that he is, in fact, the very killer he is looking for. Spoilers: John Lowe is a pawn of James March, picking up the killings that madman started in the 1920's. Be forewarned, reception of this episode is particularly harsh - but well founded.

From there, the show introduces Iris (Kathy Bates) and Liz Taylor (Denis O'Hare) as the hotel staff with Hypodermic Sally (Sarah Paulson) and a mysterious housekeeping maid (Mare Winningham) mysteriously roaming the halls. Add in a dash of creepy white-haired children, a faceless but no less dangerous murderous monster and an unknown tie between the Ten Commandments Killer and room 64. Of course, we also get a terrific introduction to The Countess (Lady Gago) and her lover, Donovan (Matt Bomer). All this and a whole lot more make up the pilot episode of Hotel, Checking In.
