“Ohhh, in other words, you don’t want to pick the pick because the pick is a pick and a shovel isn’t the pick. If you pick the pick to pick, the shovel isn’t the pick." "Now you’ve got it." "Now I got it. I don’t even know what I’m talking about." These quotes are all you need to know who stars in this episode’s film. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, and Jeff Mohr - as they get lost in the desert with Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 70 – Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955)

Bud and Lou find themselves pursued by an Egyptian cult for a special medallion linked to a walking mummy.

IMDb

Your Decades of Horror Classic Era Grue-Crew chose Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy as their second Abbott and Costello Universal Monster film after covering Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein in episode 44. Though Meet Frankenstein is obviously the cream of the crop, Whitney, Chad, and Jeff think this one is a bit underrated despite the ridiculous mummy costume. Whitney digs Marie Windsor’s portrayal of the smartest-one-in-the-room bad-girl and the way she puts up with the rest of the idiots surrounding her. Once again, Jeff overdoes it when it comes to delving into the character actors in the cast. Chad is all about Batman and connections to the Caped Crusader abound in this film.

If you dig the comic duo at all and are a Universal Monster fan (of course you are), Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy is worth your time. Your faithful Grue-Crew laughed and you will too. It’s available on Blu ray in multiple releases, most recently Shout! Factory’s Abbott & Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with the 1970s and 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1968), a Dan Curtis production starring Jack Palance, Denholm Elliott, and Billie Whitelaw.

"Touch it! Go on, touch it!" Get your mind out of the gutter. The speaker isn’t talking about that “it.” Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they uncover the true story of Frankenstein in Frankenstein: The True Story (1973) … or not.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 109 – Frankenstein: The True Story (1973)

When the brilliant but unorthodox scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein rejects the artificial man that he has created, the Creature escapes and later swears revenge.

IMDb

Yet again, the Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew delves into the realm of television mini-series with Frankenstein: The True Story, broadcast in two parts in 1973. Bill points out exactly why the title is one of the biggest misnomers in film history. Chad had a problem with the creature (Michael Sarrazin) being so handsome in the beginning but enjoyed its deterioration as the film progressed. Doc opines that the 2-hour edited version available on Amazon Prime is a hot mess of bad editing and should probably be avoided. Jeff once again goes a bit fan-boy, this time for David McCallum.

Your Grue-Crew universally enjoyed the cast and some of the set pieces and are withholding judgment until the March 24, 2020 Scream Factory release. Maybe a quality copy of the unedited version will restore the film they remembered.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Hammer’s Twins of Evil (1971).

“From Marquette, Canada today comes word of a second ship destroyed by an enormous beast according to her Captain, George LeMay. He really ought to stop smoking that stuff and try Virginia Golds.” Well, as you might have guessed, it wasn’t the stuff he’d been smoking. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, Joseph Perry, and Jeff Mohr - as they leapfrog from the arctic to New York City to join the battle to stop The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)!

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 69 – The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)

A ferocious dinosaur awakened by an Arctic atomic test terrorizes the North Atlantic and, ultimately, New York City.

IMDb

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a landmark film for many reasons. Inspired by the success of a re-release of King Kong (1933) in 1952, it’s success, in turn, inspired Toho to move forward with the production of Godzilla (1954). It also gave Ray Harryhausen his first shot as head of special effects on a feature film and provided one of Ray Bradbury’s first paychecks for a feature film. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was also the first film featuring a giant creature that exists as the result of an atomic explosion. Put Eugène Lourié in the director’s chair, John L. Russell behind the camera, and enlist a supporting cast of topnotch character actors and you have a recipe for success.

All members of your Classic Era Grue-Crew love this film and appreciate its place in film history. They gush over Harryhausen’s stop-motion animation skills and dedication, the direction, cinematography, script, and cast. If you haven’t seen this film for a while, it might be time to revisit The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. It’s a gem of a film.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with the 1970s and 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1953).

"I'm supposed to read you your rights. But you're in *Mooney's* jail, and in Mooney's jail, you ain't *got* no rights!" I wonder what the Mooney ventriloquist dummy thinks about that? Join your faithful Grue Crew - Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they go on an outing to the big top for some cotton candy and Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 150 – Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Aliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.

IMDb

You’re faithful Grue-Crew are a little scattered in this episode. You see, due to a technical glitch, everyone sounded like Killer Klowns on the first go-around so they had to record this episode a second time. They got a little slap-happy in the process and, well, they now know whether or not Crystal likes ice cream.

At any rate, they do get to Killer Klowns from Outer Space and reach a quick, unanimous consensus: they love it! They discuss the Chiodo Brothers, John Vernon’s turn as Officer Mooney, and the splendid and colorful look and feel of the film. Jeff was the Killer Klowns virgin of the crew, but he got so excited after their first attempt at recording the episode, he purchased the Blu ray and took a dive into the extras. This was indeed a great pick by Crystal and she recounts exactly why she loves it so much. Bill is impressed with the practical effects and sympathizes with the problems that had to be dealt with while filming something like Killer Klowns from Outer Space that seems to be a creation like no other. From Chad, we learn about yet another childhood fear of his.

If you haven’t seen this cult classic, you owe yourself a favor. At this writing, it is available to stream and on a fine Arrow Video Blu ray.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1970s. In episode 151, the 80s Grue-Crew will take a broom to Street Trash (1987). Oh yes, they will.

Decades of Horror 1970s

      • Karen Black as Julie
      • Robert Burton as Chad Rogers
      • Jim Storm as Eddie Nells
      • Gregory Harrison as the New Student
      • Kathryn Reynolds as Anne Richards
      • Orin Cannon as Motel Clerk

      • Teleplay by William F. Nolan from the Richard Matheson story “Therese” (aka “Needle in the Heart”) (1969), Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, October 1969, Shock Waves - Oct 1970

      • Written by Richard Matheson based on his own story, "Prey" (1969), Playboy, April 1969, Shock Waves - Oct 1970
      • Karen Black as Amelia
      • Frank Welker and Walker Edmiston (uncredited) as the voice of the Zuni doll

Each of the members of the Grue-Crew for this episode viewed Trilogy of Terror during its television premiere in 1975 and it made an indelible mark on each of their psyches. Of course, that mark, the one that created nightmares and lost sleep, is left by the final segment in which the Zuni doll runs amok. The Grue-Crew also has a heightened appreciation for Karen Black’s acting abilities after rewatching the film and her four performances therein. They also all agree that the terror in the final segment is just as strong and effective as it was in 1975. If you haven’t seen Dan Curtis’ Trilogy of Terror recently, you owe yourself a rewatch. It’s that good. At least, the Zuni-warrior doll piece is that good!

Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt Whitney Collazo, Joseph Perry, and Jeff Mohr - as they take a trip to Marineland to see the Gill-Man in his second theatrical outing, Revenge of the Creature (1955).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 68 – Revenge of the Creature (1955)

The Creature from the Black Lagoon has been captured by scientists and transported to an aquarium in south Florida. Once there, he becomes attracted to lovely female scientist Helen Dobson and manages to escape and kidnap her, and heads to Jacksonville, with her real-life love in pursuit.

IMDb

Universal International Pictures followed up the success of Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) the following year with Revenge of the Creature, another 3-D entry to the Univeral Horror catalog. Chad Hunt continues his love for the Gill-man, first revealed in episode 3 of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era. Your loyal Grue-Crew note the differences between this film and its predecessor, both in the pacing of the story and in the Florida setting. They are also impressed by the performance turned in by Lori Nelson as scientist Helen Dobson. Of course, Clint Eastwood also comes up in conversation. They all recommend Revenge of the Creature despite its marked departure from the feel and tone of the first film in the series.

Longtime listeners may be sensing a bit of déjà vu with this episode. Creepshow was already discussed by Doc Rotten, Thomas Mariani, Christopher G. Mohr and Dave Dreher on episode 94 in October 2016. The current Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew, however, didn’t want to be left out and because this fall saw the premiere of Creepshow the TV series on the Shudder streaming service, they thought it was the perfect time for another 1980s double tap.

When a movie is directed by George A. Romero with special makeup effects by Tom Savini; is written by Stephen King; features a comic book with cover art by Jack Kamen and interior art by Berni Wrightson; and a cast that includes Ed Harris, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Fritz Weaver, and E. G. Marshall; do you need to know anything else? Neither did the Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1970s. For their historic episode 150, the 80s Grue-Crew will Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988).

"The saliva is very contagious. It dribbles into open wounds and cuts, and causes immediate infection. So don’t let anybody bite you." That sounds like universally good advice! Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they try to figure out the nature of the body horror David Cronenberg dreamt up in Rabid (1977)!

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 107 – Rabid (1977)

A young woman develops a taste for human blood after experimental plastic surgery, and her victims turn into blood-thirsty zombies, leading into a city-wide epidemic.

- IMDb

As the entire Gruesome Nation already knows, the Soska sisters’ version of Rabid is scheduled for release on December 13, 2019. With that in mind, your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew decided the time was right for them to cover Cronenberg’s original version of Rabid, released in 1977.

Jeff is completely unaware that he manages to confuse Ivory Soap (9944/100% pure) with Ivory Snow, “the safest possible soap for diapers and baby clothes” that featured Marilyn Chambers on the box just prior to her career as a pornographic film actress. In his defense, they are both made by Proctor and Gamble and come from the same “Ivory” line of products. Besides that, he loves Cronenberg’s second feature film and finds the “science” behind Rose’s condition fascinating.

The entire Grue-Crew first caught Rabid (1977) on an early-80s video store rental, ... except for Doc. He broke his Rabid cherry with a big-screen viewing, is thrilled with the results, and is impressed by Chambers’ acting in the film. Bill identifies Rabid, the second of Cronenberg’s films, as a sign of obvious growth and of bigger things to come. Chad talks about some of Cronenberg’s later films and the entire Grue-Crew review Ivan Reitman’s body of work as a producer.

Rabid (1977) receives a unanimous recommendation from the 70s Grue-Crew and each of them is also looking forward to the release of the Soska sisters’ remake! At this writing, Rabid (1977) is available for streaming on Shudder and on Blu ray from Scream Factory. So listen to the podcast, watch Cronenberg’s original, then go see the Soska sisters’ remake. It’ll be fun. You know it will!

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Dan Curtis’ Trilogy of Terror (1975) starring Karen Black.

“Many men have gone there. Few have returned. I have returned. After fifteen years... I have returned.” Dr. Vitus Werdegast delivers this line with a grave determination that tells you he has vengeance on his mind. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Joseph Perry, Chad Hunt, and Jeff Mohr - as they witness Werdegast exact his gruesome revenge in The Black Cat (1934), a Universal production featuring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff in the first of their pairings.

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 67 – The Black Cat (1934)

American honeymooners in Hungary become trapped in the home of a Satan-worshiping priest when the bride is taken there for medical help following a road accident.

- IMDb

Edgar Ulmer’s The Black Cat shares nothing with Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat” beside a title and the presence of the titular character. Your loyal Grue-Crew is astounded by the film’s subject matter which includes genocide, PTSD, satanic worship, human sacrifice, and skinning a person. Being the first of eight Lugosi and Karloff pairings, this episode’s crew also thinks it is the best. Joseph identifies another of Ulmer’s films as a personal favorite while Chad is enamored of Lugosi getting a chance to play a good guy, or at least not the worst guy. Jeff speculates on how the film’s release date just prior to full implementation of the Hays Code might have affected the plot.

If you haven’t seen The Black Cat, this episode’s co-hosts highly recommend you seek it out, either online or in Scream Factory’s Blu ray boxed-set that includes the film along with three other Universal pairings of Lugosi and Karloff.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with the 1970s and 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be The Revenge of the Creature (1955), from Universal and directed by Jack Arnold.

"When the heliotrope starts growing among rough rocks and the full moon shines at night, in a certain area of the Earth, a man turns into a wolf." How could they forget the part where the man is bitten by a Yeti? Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they do their best to make sense of the mess known as Fury of the Wolfman (1972).

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 106 – Fury of the Wolfman (1972)

Waldemar Daninsky, a lone survivor of a Tibetan expedition, returns home to find his wife has been unfaithful to him. Carrying the curse of the pentagram (or pentagon, as stated by the monk who nursed him back to health), the fury of the wolfman is unleashed! After disposing of his cheating spouse, he finds himself captive in a castle by a female mad scientist conducting mind control experiments. In a vain attempt at escape, he discovers the freaks leftover from past experiments dwelling in the dungeons.

- IMDb (Written by Humberto Amador)

Your loyal Grue-Crew thought it was high time to include a Paul Naschy film in the canon of 1970s icons they’ve discussed. Unfortunately, they chose Fury of the Wolfman, quite possibly the worst of Naschy’s films, even by his own account. Chad and Jeff are Naschy virgins and could not believe what they were seeing and hearing. The dubbed dialogue made so little sense, Jeff felt like he was watching something produced by the folks from the Bad Lip Reading website. Chad thought it might have been the longest 83 minutes of his life and admitted to being completely flummoxed. Doc and Bill spent much of the time discussing Naschy films they should have watched instead of Fury of the Wolfman. Understandably, the lot of them get sidetracked a few times in their discussion. In the end, they enjoying many of the practical effects including Naschy’s version of the wolfman makeup.

As tough as it was to watch, the 70s Grue-Crew had a great time discussing it and vow to cover another Naschy film within six months. If you are so inclined, a poor version of Fury of the Wolfman is currently available on Amazon Prime.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be David Cronenberg’s Rabid (1977) starring Marilyn Chambers.
