"Death is not the worst. There are things more horrible than death." Was Count Dracula talking about working with Mr. Kinski? Oh, wait. He was Mr. Kinski! Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they check out yet another 1979 film telling the story of the undead count, Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre starring Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, and Bruno Ganz.
Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 104 – Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
Count Dracula moves from Transylvania to Wismar, spreading the Black Plague across the land. Only a woman pure of heart can bring an end to his reign of horror.
- IMDb
What do you know? The Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew takes on another vampire film from 1979. Doc thinks Kinski’s Nosferatu is lacking a certain force of personality. (Pssst! He actually uses a couple of very different words.) Roland Topor’s portrayal of Renfield trips Chad’s trigger, especially with his laugh. Jeff is impressed with Herzog’s cinematic eye and compares some of the scenes in Nosferatu the Vampyre with those of Nosferatu (1922). Bill gives his views on Kinski the man and Kinski the actor - hint: they are not the same - and discusses the differences in the story as told in Nosferatu the Vampyre and in the story as told in other Dracula films. Of course, their appreciation of Isabelle Adjani goes without saying, but don’t get them started on Herzog’s version of Van Helsing!
All-in-all, the 70s Grue-Crew thinks Nosferatu the Vampyre is a must-watch for most horror fans. Listeners might also want to check out Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Episode 21 - Nosferatu (1922).

“I summon the vampires! I summon the werewolves!... I summon Viy!” You’d think spending three nights with a witch's corpse would be enough of a trial. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, and Jeff Mohr along with special guest Doc Rotten - for a trip to Ukraine to take in Viy (1967), the Russian, folk-horror classic based on a Nikolai Gogol tale.
Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 64 – Viy (1967)
A young priest is ordered to preside over the wake of witch in a small old wooden church of a remote village. This means spending three nights alone with the corpse with only his faith to protect him.
IMDb
Your Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew has been trying to cover Viy for 2 years. When it finally showed up on the Shudder streaming service and a new Blu-ray was issued by Severin, they knew the time had come. The Blu-ray and Shudder streaming picture quality far exceed that previously available. Their general recommendation is you should see this film!
Doc tipped off the Grue-Crew to this film so it seems only natural that he join them to discuss Viy and he goes into detail about his love for the film. From beginning to end, he is fascinated by the culture, the Gogol-created folklore, the cinematography, the special effects, and the unique visuals present in Viy. Whitney is entranced by the magical quality of the film and admits she sometimes gets sucked-in by stories built around witches and folk tales. Chad really, really, really, really loves this film and his interest was aroused by the framework of the lead character having to spend 3 days locked in a church with a witches’ corpse. He also dives into Gogol’s source story and its genesis. Viy is a must-own for Jeff, having stayed up late into the night on the release date to be sure to get a copy of Severin’s new Blu-ray edition. The entire Grue-Crew discusses the escalation of the witch’s efforts over the three days and what they liked about each day.

Episode 146 – Re-Animator (1985)
After an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue.
IMDb
Crystal picked Re-Animator (1985) as the film for this episode because, “it’s awesome,” and is one of her favorite films of all time. She also admits to a big fan-crush on Jeffrey Combs and thinks the ever-youthful Barbara Crampton must be bathing in the blood of children. According to Chad, who saw Re-Animator in a theater, Combs was made for the role of Herbert West. Bill identifies Mac Ahlberg as the film’s cinematographer and as a force in creating the look of horror movies of the 1980s. Even Jeff loves this film, especially Barbara Crampton, and he thinks Combs’ portrayal of Herbert West was more over the top than Colin Clive’s portrayal of Dr. Frankenstein. All-in-all, the 1980s Grue-Crew thinks Re-Animator is a film worthy of inclusion in the collection of every horror fan.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 103 – Dracula (1979)
In 1913, the charming, seductive and sinister vampire Count Dracula travels to England in search of an immortal bride.
IMDb
1979 saw the release of a veritable colony of vampire movies. John Badham’s Dracula most certainly comes in as number one in terms of budget though maybe not in terms of a timeless treasure. This one holds a special place for Doc as does Frank Langella’s portrayal of the legendary count. Jeff labored to stay focused during the first half of the film but gives high marks to the final half. As a youngster watching this, Chad was duly frightened but admits parts of it do not hold up forty years later. Bill is irritated Dracula omits nearly everything taking place prior to the Demeter landing in England and bemoans the very weird, “vampire kite” conclusion.
Where does Dracula (1979) fit amongst other films based on Bram Stoker’s novel or even amongst vampire films in general? The 1970s Grue Crew is just foolhardy enough to take a shot at a general ranking. At any rate, they all recommend Dracula as a worthwhile watch and Doc is considering acquiring the Scream Factory Blu-ray due out in November 2019.

You might not think The Wizard of Oz is a horror movie, but you will never convince Jeff. Let him count the ways it scares the crap out of him. He also considers the film to be his favorite film of any genre. Whitney is the one that recognizes that strong female characters run the worlds depicted in The Wizard of Oz. She is also astounded by how the makeup needs of over 100 munchkins were handled on a daily basis. Bert Lahr’s portrayal of the Cowardly Lion is one of Chad’s favorites, so much so, that as a child, he used to run around the house imitating him. The whole Grue Crew can’t stop gushing over The Wizard of Oz and its iconic characters and the actors that so ably performed as those icons, even though it has been 80 years since its original release.

“All I know is the air in Dunwich is getting awful thick. Soon as I can find somebody to buy my shop and my house, I’m vamoosin’. You can bet your ass.” Much to Crystal Clevelenad’s delight, some of that “thick air” in Dunwich is created by fog machines. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, and Jeff Mohr - as they take a viscera-filled trip to Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead!
Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 145 – City of the Living Dead (1980)
In the small New England town of Dunwich, a priest commits suicide by hanging himself in the church cemetery which somehow opens the gates of hell allowing the dead to rise. Peter, a New York City reporter, teams up with a young psychic, named Mary, to travel to the town where they team up with another couple, psychiatrist Jerry and patient Sandra, to find a way to close the gates before All Saints Day or the dead all over the world will rise up and kill the living.
IMDb
Bill chose this film and recounts how Fulci’s work has risen in his estimation over the years. He also emphasizes the importance of the production design by Massimo Antonello Geleng in creating the look of City of the Living Dead. Fog machines are Crystal’s thing so she’s all about the look of this movie as Fulci went for the “fog-everywhere-all-the-time” look. She also talks about the importance of the filmmakers having worked on several pictures together, building their mutual understanding of each others’ methods. Chad surprises the rest of the Grue-Crew by revealing that he saw City of the Living Dead first run, younger than he should’ve been to see the movie, by sneaking into the theater with his buddies. He is also enthralled by the idea that a priest committing suicide could open a gate of hell and cause the dead to rise. Jeff gets into Christopher George’s filmography and is thrilled at the opportunity to explore more Fulci films.
Originally titled Paura nella città dei morti viventi in Italy and first released in the U.S. as The Gates of Hell, City of the Living Dead is the first chapter in what is referred to as Lucio Fulci’s Gates of Hell Trilogy. The Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew are universally impressed with City of the Living Dead!
As you might have noticed, the Gruesome Magazine Decades of Horror 1980s is back from its hiatus with a completely new Grue-Crew. They plan to fit into the new Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1970s and hope they can live up to the standards set by the previous Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crews.

Episode 102 – Tourist Trap (1979)
Teenagers come across a shut-in psychopath with telekinetic powers. He proceeds to use these powers to slay them one by one as well as animate the various mannequins he uses to keep himself company.
IMDb
Your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue Crew all agree Tourist Trap is an underrated film. In fact, they all admit to paying it little heed in passing until they took a closer look for this podcast. Bill brings up Pino Donaggio’s quirky score and Robert Burns’ art direction and mask designs as contributing factors to the film’s creepiness. The first kill scene really got to Chad as Woody meets his demise in a seemingly abandoned gas station and don’t even mention the hands! Jeff gives some background on Chuck Connors’ athletic exploits prior to becoming an actor and points out an early uncredited role for scream queen Linnea Quigly.
The Grue Crew give Tourist Trap a solid recommendation with the following caveat: be prepared to watch a very odd film. Despite its oddness, you will be watching a very creepy and powerful take on slasher films in this hidden gem from 1979.

Of course, the Classic Era Grue Crew knows Batman: The Movie is not a horror movie, but they just couldn’t help themselves. From the beginning of the podcast, they’ve been making connections between the film they discussed and Batman (TV-Series. 1966-1968) and even some of the Batman films. It was inevitable that they would eventually pull the Bat-trigger and feature this 1966 film. Joseph was the one who finally put it on the schedule and everyone had beaucoup Bat-fun covering this Batman: The Movie.
Chad points out Adam West wasn’t a shoo-in for the role of Batman and encourages us to check out Lyle Waggoner’s screentest on YouTube. Other works in horror by the cast and crew are identified by Joseph while Jeff focuses on other screenplays written by Lorenzo Semple Jr. Whitney notices Adam West’s version of Batman is more nurturing toward Robin than most later depictions. If you haven’t seen this campy and fun film, your Grue Crew highly recommends you watch Batman: The Movie in the near future!
If you’re unaware of the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era’s many connections to the Batman TV-series, you might want to check out these episodes: Frank Gorshin (The Riddler) in 48.
