Considered a horror classic by many genre historians, The Wicker Man (1973) is the film for this episode. Featuring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Eckland and Ingrid Pitt, the film from director Robin Hardy leads its audience on a leisurely paced path to one of the more iconic endings in horror. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 4 – The Wicker Man (1973)

Joining The Black Saint and Doc Rotten is North Carolina film maker, Bill Mulligan, who lends his thespian, effects making, screen writing talents to the duo's take on The Wicker Man. The show explores the various cuts of the film; the efforts it took to make the film from screenwriter Anthony Shaffer and headliner Christopher Lee; and, all crazy songs scattered throughout the film. Bill, The Black Saint and Doc discuss the horror - or lack of it, the iconic ending and all the...um...forward thinking ways of the pagan Island of Summerisle. Good times!

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (2014) is Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's return to Marv, Dwight and Nancy. It is all style over substance in glorious black and white with spectacular 3D and fun performances from Mickey Rourke and Eva Green. But Mr. Miller may have slid too far into seedy life behind Sin City without any meaning.

The film is visually stunning but intellectually void.

With episode 7, The Strain reveals what is up with Lawyer Joan Luss (Leslie Hope) in all her vampire glory. The ending leaves Doc and Dave shocked and excited for future episodes. And that is just one small tasty nugget found in For Services Rendered. All that and more on this week's episode...

The Strain continues its trend with a fantastic opening and a killer ending. With episode 7, the writers are finally starting to boil the middle into an intelligent, scary concoction. The dialog this week is witty and sharp with the banter back and forth between a young Abraham Setrakian and Thomas Eichhorst  being the show's highlight. But even still, it is the show's surprise ending that is what will be remembered - just what the heck is going on?  Doc and Dave have lots to discuss as the recap episode 7 of The Strain.

Haunted Houses are a tough genre to film. They can easily come off hokey or silly. There are some classics though, Haunting, The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist. But many are overlooked and forgotten. One such film is The Legend of Hell House from director John Hough featuring Pamela Franklin, Roddy McDowall, Clive Revill and Gayle Hunnicutt. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten are joined by award winning director Christopher G. Moore to discuss the British classic horror film.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 3 – The Legend of Hell House (1973)

Eventhough The Legend of Hell House springs from the mind of Richard Matheson, it lives in the shadows of The Exorcist and The Haunting. One film changed the face of horror overnight while the other is often seen to have done it better years before. This is a shame as The Legend of Hell House in an intelligent and often creepily effective haunted house film taking both a scientific and supernatural look at the forces behind the haunting. Christopher steps in this week to address the differences between the book, Hell House, and the John Hough directed film while Doc shares his love for the acting chops of Roddy McDowell. Santos fondly remembers seeing the film - in the theaters - when it was released. In the end, The Legend of Hell House is a film worth revisiting and reliving.

Life After Beth (2014) proves that a zombie romcom is a difficult proposition regardless of how fantastic the cast may be. Dane DeHaan, Aubrey Plaza,  John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon and Anna Kendrick cannot save this humorless, lifeless horror comedy from writer/director Jeff Baena. All the pieces are there, they just never assemble into a cohesive whole. Sad.

Afflicted (2013), on the other hand, proves how a well constructed story and a pair of leads with authentic bro-chemistry is capable of reinvigorating the found footage sub genre. Afflicted is the film no one knows about but everyone should. A terrific little film that has the grue-crew united in singing its praises. Check it out!

Life After Beth (2014)
Thomas sums it up best during the review, "this year's biggest disappointment." Life After Beth is ripe with promise: a great cast, a promising young director, an intriguing premise and a slick spin on horror, romance and comedy. It should be the zombie rom-com to define  a decade. Instead, the chemistry never gels, the zombies never reach their potential and, the biggest crime, the comedy is never funny. Sigh.

Afflicted (2013)
The HNR grue-crew wear their found footage scars as they have endured an onslaught of horror films trying to capture the fire ignited by Paranormal ActivityREC and CloverfieldAfflicted is one of the few films that get it right, a remarkable entry into the sub genre that spins a unique and often scary look at vampires and the horrors of the transformation from human to the undead. Derek Lee and Clif Prowse are pair of writers, directors and actors to keep an eye on. Recommended!

What Have You Been Watching: PiFan 2014 report from Joseph Perry
The Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival is a popular annual event in  South Korea. Horror News of the Week for 08/18/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news across all mediums. On Television, NBC is bringing The Devil's Advocate to the small screen. In comics, DC Comics is exploring horror themes in the Batman universe with Gotham by Midnight. Elijah Woods carries the film segment with his latest cinematic effort, Open Windows. On Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing their second volume of Vincent Price classics: House on Haunted Hill, The Raven and Dr. Phibes Rises Again. Finally, on the you tube front, Max Landis has recreated the iconic transformation scene from his father's film American Werewolf in London with a tiny budget and a big imagination. Crazy!

Director Steven Quale (Final Destination 5) returns to direct Into the Storm which is a blend of found footage, traditional disaster flick and a family drama that wears its similarities with Twister on its sleeve. Even Santos catches the direct reference to the Nineties classic as a giant artificial cow flies by. "We've got cows!" The grue-crew dive into the film tearing it a new one for its weak script while praising the special effects and its dumb-fun pacing.

The Strain continues to be the most horrific, disturbing horror on television today. Horror News TV The Strain Fan Podcast Co-hosts Doc Rotten and Dave Dreher recap and review episode 4, "It's Not For Everyone," discussing the autopsy of Captain Doyle, the betrayal of old man Palmer and the uniting of Eph and Abraham. All that and more on this week's episode...

Lucy (2014) embarks on a journey of the mind towing along tons of action and preposterous nonsense. The HNR grue-crew review and rip apart the latest film from direct Luc Besson starring the beautiful and talented Scarlett Johansson. Pretentious, silly and downright goofy fun, it is the Summer hit that had The Black Saint laughing his ass off. The problem is the film is not a comedy.

Dave ramps up the horror news of the week with tons of SDCC news, even more than what was on the SDCC Bonus episode of HNR. Joseph Perry returns with more on PiFan. And Thomas reigns in a review of another Scarlett Johansson film, Under The Skin.

Lucy (2014)
Yes sir, Morgan Freeman collects a big fat paycheck. Not much else happens in Lucy from Luc Besson and Scarlett Johannson. Well, at least The Black Saint and his offspring found mountains of hilarity in this pretentious mess. The grue-crew bicker back and forth over what is the most offensive part of the film while Santos suggests it is the perfect unintentional comedy. Yikes!

From South Korea, attending the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, Horror News Radio man-on-the-street reported Joseph Perry brings short reviews from a handful of genre films presented during the festival: The Demon's RookWolf CopDark Sea and Video Club.

Thomas discusses the sci-fi thriller also starring Scarlett Johansson, Under the Skin. He declares it a much better experience than Scarlett's Lucy highly recommending the film.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014) picks up one year after the Purge presented last year except this entry follows Frank Grillo as Seargent Leo Barnes, a man on a mission to purge but runs into two sets of characters in deep doo doo deciding to help them survive the night. Capitalizing on the premise of The Purge, Anarchy takes the action to the streets to the satisfaction of the fans but forgets to bring characterization along with it. Hollow? Maybe. Action packed? You bet. Check out the review from the HNR grue-crew.

Dave ramps up the horror news of the week with bloody bits and pieces about GrizzlyThe Overlook Motel and Mad Max Fury Road. Joseph Perry is now the HNR man-on-the-street in South Korea at the PiFan film festival with his reviews of Dead Snow Red vs Dead, Blood Glacier and other genre films.

Thomas reminds his co-hosts that all but Vixen hated on The Purge last year giving the film a screaming 1 out of 5 before the grue-crew jump into their review of the its 2014 sequel, The Purge: Anarchy. Dave perhaps says it the best, "For a film with 'Anarchy' in its title, where is all the Anarchy?" Frank Castle...uh...Frank Grillo, rather, takes to the streets on Purge Night handing out violence, gore and death, but does the action hold enough interest to elevate the film and the now successful franchise.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) is the best example of a sequel done right! Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Director Matt Reeves accomplishes with the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes what most other sequels never even approach, he makes a better film. Empires Strikes Back, The Godfather II, the list that includes these films is incredibly short. To no one's surprise, Doc, Dave, Santos, Thomas and Vixen all praise the film for its remarkable effects, it's incredible performance from Andy Sirkis and it's deceptively simple story that is thoroughly engrossing, compelling and fascinating. Check out this great discussion.

Horror News of the Week for 07/14/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news the first teaser trailer from Alex Aja's adaptation of Joe Hill's Horns. Then the grew-crew have issues with the changes to Robert Englund's "final" public appearance in Freddy make-up from A Nightmare on Elm Street. Speaking of Matt Reeves, Dave reveals his intentions to film The Invisible Woman. Director Richard Bates (Excision) is back in the news with the trailer for his upcoming film Suburban Gothic. The El Rey Network TV show, From Dusk Till Dawn, is getting its own haunted house treatment within this year's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios theme parks.

What Have You Been Watching: The Strain (FX - Season 1 - 7/13/2014)
Thomas chimes in with his opinions on the hit FX television adaptation of The Strain from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and showrunner Carlton Cuse. Thomas provides a mixed review harping on the weak character development but enjoying the more graphic horror elements. Santos pretty much poops on the whole show while Doc suggests everyone listen to he and Dave reviewing each episode on the Horror News TV The Strain Fan Podcast.

Join us this week as we revisit and remember the original Planet of the Apes franchise, the first five classic sci-fi films. Planet of the Apes (1968), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). Relive the the gripping stories, the incredible make-up and the memorable lines such as "Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" It's all here along with a healthy dose of love for Roddy McDowall (Cornelius and Caesar).

"Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death." - Cornelius

Thomas Mariani returns once again to join Doc Rotten to celebrate classic monster movies from the past. To examine the Planet of the Apes films, The Black Saint (Santo Ellin Jr.) from HorrorNews.Net steps in to round out the panel of horror and sci-fans examining the original 5 films about George Taylor, Zira, Cornelius, Dr. Zaius and the lovely Nova.

The original Planet of the Apes (1968) represents a remarkable achievement in sci-fi films with its incredible make-up for the apes that populate the desolate future of mankind. Shocking for its time, the film is now a classic with its scenes, characters and lines at the top of the minds of audiences and fans world wide. Before Star Wars and perhaps even more than Star Trek, Planet of the Apes sparks a marketing a machine of sequels and merchandise that would delight kids and adults of the early Seventies. Roddy McDowall is the star of four of the five films and the TV series from 1974 where he would play three distinctly separate simian characters. From Planet of the Apes to Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the original franchise is a must-see collection of films. In preparation for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), Doc, Thomas and The Black Saint revisit the films and their impact and influence on the Monster Movie Podcast.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014) is the latest horror film from director Scott (Sinister) Derrickson about a cop (Eric Bana) who discovers a strange killer who may be possessed. Dave is ecstatic that the HNR crew is finally getting back to a full-fledged theatrical horror film; however, the box office results do not support that the audience was interested in seeing a blend of The Exorcist and Seven.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
The discussion of Deliver Us From Evil begins on a solid notes with Santos giving it a 3 star review but it quickly runs afoul as the rest chime in less and less favorable experiences. The film from Scott Derrickson is supposedly based on true events where a cop and a priest perform an exorcism on a possessed criminal. The film is atmospheric and looks great but the script is uneven and the acting is a mixed bag with Eric Bana's New York accent amusing Santos and Thomas.

Horror News of the Week for 07/07/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news of  The Guest from Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett getting a September 2014 release date. Next up is disturbing news about The ABCs of Death 2 where the Soska Sisters (directors of one of the 26 chapters) released a graphic shot from the film which caused quite a stir on Facebook and other social media outlets. Dave shares the latest found footage trailer with Doc for the film The Expedition. And then follows it up with the trailer for the schlocky Sharnado 2: The Second One. Last up, Dave shares the alien cookie and other tasty genre treats from Christine McConnell, The Horror Baker.

What Have You Been Watching: Snowpiercer (2013)
Thomas steps up to discuss the much delayed film from director Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer. The hardest working man in podcasting champions the film siting its cinematography, direction and tone. Santos, however, who also saw the film, shares a different story. Gasp!

Join us this week as we revisit and remember the excellent of Gremlins (1984) for its 30th Anniversary on episode 68 of the Monster Movie Podcast. The podcast takes a loving and hilarious look back at Gizmo, Spike and Murray Futterman (Dick Miller). "Turn on all the lights, check all the closets and cupboards, look under all the beds, 'cause you never can tell there just might be a gremlin in your house."

Thomas Mariani returns once again to celebrate horror comedy at its best with Gremlins (and Gremlins 2: The Next Batch) in order to share his love for a film that has become an annual Christmas holiday viewing. He also has been able to change Doc's opinion on the sequel forcing him to view the film for this podcast. "Now, was that civilized? No, clearly not. Fun, but in no sense civilized." - Brain Gremlin.

Witching and Bitching (2013)
This crazy film begins with a heist where the thieves are dressed as Jesus Christ, a green toy soldier and even Spongebob Squarepants, Insanity! The script follows two of them on the run with a 10 year old boy in tow. The plan is to escape Spain by traveling into France, but one town stands in the way: Zugarramurdi. This town is, of course, populated solely by witches, and this coven has their eyes set on the our lively groups of crooks. Doc, Thomas and Santos highly recommend the film.
