Novelist, screen writer, director Michael Crichton brings the iconic Westworld to cinema screens in 1973 set in an Disneyland-inspired amusement park where robots interact with guests enabling them to live out fantasy environments long gone, Medieval World, Roman World and West World. A computer virus sends the robots on an uncontrolled path of death, destruction and mayhem. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 13 – Westworld (1973)

For Westworld, and in preparation for the forthcoming HBO series coming spring/summer 2015, The Black Saint and Doc Rotten revisit the classic science goes wrong cautionary tale that has since inspired HalloweenTerminator and Crichton's own Jurassic Park. While Richard Benjamin and James Brolin are the leads in the film, Yul Brynner steals the entire film as the rogue robot "The Gunslinger" - which is a homage to his classic "Chris" character in The Magnificent Seven.

Review: The Lazarus Effect (2015)

While The Lazarus Effect seems to have all the right ingredients, an intriguing story and an impressive cast, the end results are no where near what was promised. Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Evan Peters, Donald Glover and Sarah Bolger star in David Gelb's horror film from Blumhouse. Listen to the Grue-crew investigate what went wrong. And, what's this about no pants?

Review: The Voices (2015)

Director Marjane Satrapi delivers a far superior film with her dark horror comedy, The Voices starring Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick and Jacki Weaver. The film examines the effects of "voices" directing a troubled young man into making horrific and deadly decisions. Thomas and Dave share their thoughts on Reynolds terrific performance, the blend of drama, horror and comedy and the use of gore to illustrate why this film should appeal to most horror fans.

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week with the sad news of the passing of a legend, an icon: Leonard Nimoy. The Grue-crew remember his films, his legacy and Spock. In other news, Lady Gaga is joining the cast of American Horror Story: Hotel. Drew Goddard is rumored to be the writer and director of the new revised Sony/Marvel Spider-Man. Cheers and squeals. The team behind Manborg are entering The Void. And Sharknado 3 cast Mark Cuban, Ann Coulter and Jerry Springer.

Listener Spotlight: Bill Oberst, Jr.

For our 100th episode, we decided to spotlight the iconic actor Bill Oberst, Jr. whom we were honored to discover he was a listener and fan of Horror News Radio. With 137 credits in IMDB at the time of this writing, Bill is perhaps the most prolific actor in horror films today with turns in films such as Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, Valley of the Sasquatch and Circus of the Dead. With his signature looks, his intense performances and his recognizable squeals of horror, Bill is the future of horror and we thank him greatly for listening to the show and being a fan. Be sure to catch Bill in these films, Coyote, Resolution, Criminal Minds and The Retrieval.

The Monster Movie Podcast hosts explore films such as John Carpenter's The Thing, An American Werewolf in London and The Exorcist. The podcast is a ninety minute discussion about the best effects on film, what went into making them, the effects artist behind them and the future of practical effects in horror films.

Horror News Radio co-host and co-managing editor of OneofUs.net, Thomas Mariani sits down with Doc to list out their top 13 practical effects in horror films. The pair are joined by camera operator Alan G. Kelly and NC film maker Bill Mulligan to discuss some horror history's best practical effects and effects artists such as Dick Smith, Rick Baker, Chris Walas, Tom Savini, Rob Bottin and more. As with any top list, many favorites or equally top notch entries are left off as evidence by the many other films discussed along the way and then toward the end of the show. Review: Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)

Described as a mix between Dawn of the Dead and Mad Max, Wyrmwood is receiving high praise around the internet. The grue-crew chime in on their reactions to all the zany zombie action from director Kiah Roache-Turner. The highlight of the film is easily the addition of Bianca Bradey as Brooke who goes through unimaginable transformation during the film. The action is fast paced and the gore if plentiful.

Review: Late Phases (2014)

Dave starts off the review of Late Phases with a quick report from the Cleveland Wizard Comic Con where effects artist supreme Robert Kurtzman brought some of the werewolf heads to display. Doc and Vixen report on their catching the film at the recent Nevermore Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina. The grue-crew sum up the film as a werewolf film, as a character piece and as a kick-ass horror film.

From the director of PORKY'SMURDER BY DECREE and A CHRISTMAS STORY comes a tale so terrifying, to frightening, you will "piss your pants." CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS is Bob Clark's under-appreciated zombie cult classic from 1973. Not widely seen, but loved by most all who have seen it, the film bridges the gap between NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and EVIL DEAD.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

For Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, Doc Rotten and The Black Saint are joined by Ormon Grimsby and Joseph Fittos to discuss Bob Clark's oddball zombie flick from 1973. Ormon, the animated horror host from North Carolina, claims the film as one of his favorites, influential to both his love of horror films and his horror hosting personality. The Black Saint is not far behind him in his high praise and appreciation for this low budget must-see-film.

Writers-directors Jemain Clement and Taika Waititi bring out the manic mundane in everyday life of 4 flat mates in rural New Zealand in What We Do In The Shadows with great success while Matthew Vaughn brings another graphic novel to the big screen with Kingsman The Secret Service.

Review: What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

No surprise here: Dave, Thomas and Doc all sing praises for the vampire horror comedy What We Do In The Shadows. The grue-crew dive into what makes this film hit the high moments with laughs and silly fun. Thomas spotlights co-director Jemain Clement in the role of Vladislav while Doc appreciates the understated comedy of Stu (as played by Stuart Rutherford). David, of course, adores the Nosferatu look and feel of the elder vampire, Petyr. Find out why you should see this film.

Review: Kingsman The Secret Service (2015)

Colin Firth kills it as the suave but deadly Harry Hart in Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman The Secret Service as they take a satiric stab at every concept buried in the tropes of James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer. Doc has admiration for Gazelle as played by Sofia Boutella. Thomas patiently waits for Doc to finish stammering about the effects and the comedy to discuss Samuel L. Jackson as the film's villain, the billionaire named Valentine.

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week with news about the trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak. Ignoring the fact that the film came out fifteen years ago, director Russ Gomm brings a documentary about The Blair Witch Project to screens and film festivals in 2015. On the sequel front, the producers behind the upcoming Friday the 13th sequel discuss how the script will tackle the supernatural underpinnings to Jason Voorhees. James Franco headlines Stephen King's 11/22/63. Who make up the new supergroup The Hollywood Vampires? Why Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and...Johnny Depp.

Everly is one of the best universally reviewed films in recent episodes by the entire grue-crew. Salma Hayek heats up the screen, oh, my. "Bonzai, ball" - Everly. "That not a ball!" - killer, chasing dog down the hall. [[ BOOM ]] See it! You'll love it!

Once The Black Saint placed The Scarehouse on his Best Horror Films of 2014 on the Horror News Radio podcast, Doc Rotten knew this film would soon make a huge impression. Reaction was immediate, with the show's co-hosts and its listeners. Soon the entire Grue-Crew was reviewing the film for episode 93. While certainly not the only remarkable element about The Scarehouse, the film's casting remains one of its key attractions. It has an all female cast. He shares behind the scenes insight into developing, casting and directing the film including replacing a key actress one day before shooting. He explains how his wife, Sarah Booth, helped him turn one of his favorite scripts into the treatment that would become The Scarehouse, how she would land one of the lead roles and how much of a key player she was behind the scenes during the entire shoot. "Evil Does Not Die...It Waits...to be Re-Born." The tag line for The Manitou (1978) promises the birth of a modern horror classic monster. The re-release of William Girdler's film reveals a number of its more prominent influences, "Possession marked The Exorcist. Demonaic Pregenacy arupted Rosemary's Baby. Warnings followed The Omen. And The Manitou has it all combined!" The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Review: The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death (2015)

What happens when there is very little "Woman in Black" in The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death movie? According to Thomas and The Black Saint, "Ample time to take a nap." For many of the grue-crew, the Hammer sequel proves to be a snooze-fest; while for a few on the show and for Mrs. Dreher (co-host Dave's better half), the film offers some entertaining Gothic horror romance. Listen and decide for yourself...does the first horror film of 2015 have anything to offer?
