On this week's episode, the Grue-crew follow Sarah Wayne Callies to India for her film THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR from director Johannes Roberts. The film introduces a new creature called Myrtu played by Javier Botet and features Jeremy Sisto, Sofia Rosinsky and Suchitra Pillai in supporting roles. The reviews are across the board but not a contentious as the horrific box office receipts as the film places 16 on its opening weekend with a 1.2 million take. Oh, my.
In Dave's absence, Doc and Thomas tag team the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with information about Ghostbusters trailer, The Exorcist TV casting and the Boo! A Madea Halloween teaser. In addition, the Grue-Crew announce the winners of both the Stump the Saint prize and the Grue-believer prize. It's a great time to be an HNR listener!

It is that time of year again, the beginning of the Film Festival season. The first up for Gruesome Magazine, Horror News Radio and the Monster Movie Podcast is the NEVERMORE FILM FESTIVAL in Durham, North Carolina held in February of 2016. We covered the festival last year with Paul Cardullo joining Doc Rotten to discuss the top films from the festival. Paul returns this year to once again look at the selection of film presenting during the festival's 17th year.
The festival mixes things up a bit this year by presenting far more animated and science fiction films during the weekend events, especially for a horror film festival. For the most part, this works in its favor. Except, the better horror films are hard to find with the animated features eclipsing the other genre related films on the schedule. The festival also presents a number of short horror film blocks with the kick-ass horror short KNOB GOBLINS from occasional HNR guest-host Christopher G. Moore being a highlight of the weekend.
The festival comes highly recommended from both Doc Rotten and Paul Cardullo. The Nevermore Film Festival is presented each February over the second weekend of the month. The festival runs from Friday through Sunday with multiple screens showing the selected films. The event is located at the Carolina Theater in Durham, North Carolina. We hope to see you there next year!

The Grue-Crew are joined by director Andy Mitton who, along with co-director Jesse Holland, directed the supernatural thriller WE GO ON. The film is their followup to their hit film YELLOWBRICKROAD and features a tale of Miles Grissom searching for the answer to the burning question: Is there life after death? Andy shares how the film grew from page to screen, the joys of working with talent such as Annette O'Toole and John Glover and the challenges of working with friends Clark Freeman and family Laura Heisler.
After the interview, the Grue-Crew dive into the latest horror anthology film to hit the big screen (in limited theaters) SOUTHBOUND, from the teams behind the V/H/S series. The movie features five short tales of interconnected Twilight Zone inspired chills and thrills with titles such as The Way Out, Siren, The Accident, Jailbreak and The Way In.
Dave launches the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with information about the new anthology novel Horror of the Living Dead from George Romero, John Russo and others and a slew of new Blu-ray releases from Scream Factory including SSSSSSS and Jeepers Creepers. In addition, the Grue-Crew are saddened by the passing of the king of character actors, George Kennedy. R.I.P., sir.

A24 distributors release the serious horror film The Witch into theaters this past weekend to decent box office and critical praise, for the most part. The Grue-crew are on board to examine the slow-burn thriller that - small spoilers - features...a witch. Is it scary? Is it authentic? Is it any good? Ha! HNR is here to let you know. The film is full of rich atmosphere, great acting, stunning cinematography, creepy music and haunting imagery. Yeah, see it.

"Who are these unholy savages who hunt out their victims by sound alone?" - the tagline for Tombs of the Blind Dead (La Noche del Terror Ciego) from under-appreciated Spanish director Amando de Ossorio introduces the zombie-like terror of The Templar Knights. When a group of travelers stumble upon an abandoned, dilapidated castle, los Guerreros de Oriente rise from the grave to drink their blood. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode3 – Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971)
Excited to discuss the film he refers to as "Revenge from Planet Ape", Bill Mulligan returns to guest-host this episode of Decades of Horror. Joining us for the first time is fan-turned-guest-host Jerry Chandler, writer for Needless Things. Bill and Jerry quickly reveals they are huge fans of Tombs of the Blind Dead as they join Doc and the Black Saint in recapping and reviewing La Noche del Terror Ciego. Fun things that come up, in addition to the Planet of the Apes marketing ploy, is a debate if the creatures in the film are zombies, vampires or raging ghosts. A familiar but often forgotten gem, Tombs of the Blind Dead proves to be a terrific topic to discuss thanks to the Grue-believers from Gruesome Magazine who helped select the topic for this episode.

The adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith parody hit Pride and Prejudice and Zombies stumbles into theaters this weekend making barely a dent in the box office. While the horror-fied version of the Jane Austin classic was a hit with Vixen and Doc Rotten, it did not impress Thomas Mariani and the Black Saint much at all. With Dave stuck in the middle, the discussion gets lively examining the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Grue-crew immediately skewer Doc's love for found footage as they review JeruZalem on this week's episode of HNR. The Israeli film from directors Doron Paz and Yoav Paz follows a pair of Americans visiting Jerusalem when the apocalypse poops on their parade. They race to escape the city as giants, monsters and flying zombies attack. Thomas is quick to point out that the film's main device, Google Glasses, are already passe and date the film. It may not get much better from there despite Doc optimistically describing his enjoyment of Jeruzalem as a guilty pleasure. Oh, my!

On this episode of the Monster Movie Podcast we are taking a look at the most anticipated Sci-Fi and Superhero films of 2016. A bit of a stretch for a Monster Movie podcast certainly, but it is still a fun romp examining some exciting films coming our way full of aliens, mutants, fantastic beasts, lunatics and a fancy dressed Master of the Mystic Arts. Joining me tonight are some of my friends from various podcasts and fellow writers at Gruesome Magazine: Thomas Mariani, co-managing editor of OneofUs.net; Christopher G. Moore, award wining director; and, Joey Fittos contributing writer at Gruesome Magazine. Things get insane and the next hour and half move pretty fast, so hold on.
With this episode, Monster Movie Podcast returns after a brief hiatus. A lot has happened since we last chilled. The biggest news is that Doc Rotten and the Grue-crew from Horror News Radio have launched Gruesome Magazine. It is the launch of this horror movie website that is responsible for the return of this podcast. But not only re-igniting the inspiration to resurrect the show, but to also become a key factor in determining the content found within. For this episode, the grue-believers at the site replied to an online survey of 20 Sci-Fi and Superhero films from 2016 to derive the films we are going to discuss tonight AND the order in which they are ranked. If you are interested in participating and helping the show in the process head over to the Gruesome Magazine Patreon account for details.

"If this one doesn't scare you, you're already dead" - the tagline for the Don Coscarelli cult classic Phantasm (1979) foreshadows an experience not to be forgotten. And, it delivers. There is nothing like Phantasm with its nightmare narrative, the Tall Man and those deadly flying spheres. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode 29 – Phantasm (1979)
Thomas Mariani, co-managing editor of OneofUs.net and co-host of Horror News Radio, joins The Black Saint and Doc Rotten to discuss a bonafide classic of horror movies, Seventies or otherwise, Phantasm. In recent months the film is set to get a 4K makeover with a release shepherded by J.J. Abrams and another sequel called Phantasm Ravager. And with the passing of the film's Tall Man, Angus Scrimm (Lawrence Rory Guy), Decade of Horror is revisiting Phantasm with bitter sweet joy and a heavy heart. After all these years, the film holds up tremendously well, even if some of its tricks are beginning to show their low-budget origins. Check out that marble wall paper and glimpses of the rope used to help Angus pick up the coffin. Still the Tall Man will haunt your dreams and the flying spheres will make you piss your pants.
This week on Horror News Radio we try to follow Brahms' rules as we babysit The Boy. Lauren Cohan steps out of the dangerous world of The Walking Dead to become a nanny in England looking after an 8 year old boy, except that boy turns out to be a life-sizes porcelain doll. The grue-crew are initially delighted as she begins to suspect there is more to the doll, to Brahms, fearing a spirit may actually reside within the creepy bastard. Things really perk up when she successfully convinces Malcolm (Rupert Evans) of her suspicions. Then...well...then...the third act arrives and the grue-crew are livid. Found out why!
Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with information about The Exorcist coming to FOX as an episode television show, Universal's The Mummy gaining a star in Tom Cruise and The Joker making an impression (as does Harley Quinn) with the latest Suicide Squad trailer. Blumhouse delivers MARTYRS, a remake of the French film of the same name from 2008 from Pascal Laugier - a film that helped usher in the "extreme" genre of European films. Kevin Goetz and Michael Goetz direct the new version from a script by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) with a watered down US slant. As The Black Saint says, the remake has no "balls." Oh, no.

"Welcome to the Bottom of the Food Chain!" - the tagline for the cult classic, so-bad-it-is-good, AIP horror film from Bert I. Gordon, Food of the Gods (1976) reveals not only the theme of the film, but the level of quality as well. Boom goes the mic. Called "Worst Rodent Movie Of All Time" by Michael Medved, the film is a bit more fondly remembered now for how cheesy it is, for all its camp. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Back in 1976, Mr. B.I.G. - that's the master of shlock Bert I. Gordon (The Amazing Colossal Man, Empire of the Ants) to horror fans - adapted a "portion" of H.G. Wells The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth for AIP as Food of the Gods featuring Marjoe Gortner (Earthquake) in the lead and Pamela Franklin (The Legend of Hell House) in her last theatrical film. Ida Lupino, Ralph Meeker, Jon Cypher, Belinda Balaski and Tom Stovall round out the cast. The known for its giant rats also includes giant wasps, maggots, chickens and one pissed off rooster. While it is AIP's most financially successful film of the year, it is remembered for all the campy effects and rather lousy adaptation. Still it has its fans. Doc Rotten and the Black Saint spend an hour looking back at this nature-runs-amok Seventies classic. Remember, "One Taste Is All It Takes!"

Episode 12 – Be Our Guest
Doc, Thomas, Dave and Christopher are all back to recap and review the finale of Hotel, the fifth season of American Horror Story. Let's just get this out of the way, Denis O'Hare is divine! He is the heart of this season and rocks this episode as Liz Taylor. Give this man an Emmy now, please. A good portion of the finale steers the remaining casts into a good place, a happy place; but, this being American Horror Story, we all know things never end up all that well - at least in a traditional way. The Countess, James March, Devil's Night, John Lowe, Ramona Royale - and even Tristan - are all accounted for by the end. And with that, the doors of the Hotel Cortez close...for now.

The first theatrical horror film of 2016 is upon us, Jason Zada's The Forest sends Natalie Dormer to Aokigahara Forest - the "suicide forest" - at the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan to look for her lost sister. Episode 11 – Battle Royale
Doc, Thomas and Christopher return with the New Year to tackle the last two episodes of American Horror Story: Hotel beginning with Battle Royale. Even with the amount of disdain for John and Alex Lowe by many of the co-hosts, they are impressed with how his story finally intertwines with that of The Countess - as is James March. Liz and Iris continue to steal the show from the rest of the cast; however, the return of Gabourey Sidibe challenges their roost at the top. The thrills include the final fate of the countess, Hypodermic Sally's twisted back story and the battle royale between a vampire, a witch and a ghost. Good times!
