"Forgive me, but you are an endless source of amusement to me." I amuse you? I make you laugh? I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? … Wait. Wrong movie. Anyway, join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they determine exactly what is so damn endlessly amusing in The Evil (1978) from New World Pictures.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 111 – The Evil (1978)

A doctor buys a Civil War era dilapidated mansion and hires a few friends to fix it up, but the mansion hides a deadly secret.

IMDb

The Evil is Doc’s pick. He does love his haunted house films and this one has it’s share of violent deaths. The 70s Grue-Crew all love Victor Buono’s gleeful turn as the devil! Chad, of course, points out the Batman TV-series connection and Jeff, equally predictably, links Richard Crenna to The Real McCoys (1959-1963) TV-series. Andrew Prine seemed to be everywhere according to Doc as he reminisces about Prine’s career. Bill warns everyone not to try these fire gags in their own low budget, indie horror flicks. The discussion goes astray more often than usual as the Grue-Crew seems to be easily sidetracked on this episode. Though not a great film, your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew consider this a “good” film … at least in parts, and Victor Buono as the devil is to die for.

At this writing, The Evil is available to stream on Prime and as a Blu-ray from Scream Factory.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be The Evictors (1979), starring Jessica Harper, Michael Parks, and Vic Morrow.

"My God, Henry! What you've done ... it's satanic!"  In this case, the Henry being referred to is Dr. Henry Jekyll as played by Jack Palance. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Joseph Perry, Whitney Collazo, and Jeff Mohr - as they get strange with the Dan Curtis version of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1968).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 71 – The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1968)

Dr. Henry Jekyll experiments with scientific means of revealing the hidden, dark side of man and releases a murderer from within himself.

IMDb

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the fifth TV-movie produced by Dan Curtis and covered by a Decades of Horror Grue-Crew, and it doesn’t disappoint. Jeff chose this film because the visage of Jack Palance in Dick Smith’s makeup as Mr. Hyde and his maniacal, cackling laugh, have stuck with him for over fifty years since he first saw it on the small screen. For Chad, this version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella leaps into second place behind the 1932 release starring Fredric March. High praise, indeed. Whitney enjoyed the film but, in terms of the makeup for Mr. Hyde, thinks that when viewed through a modern-day lens, it looks like a botched Botox encounter. The 2-hour length gave Joseph pause, but after viewing the film, he marveled at the pacing and even flow of the story.

Your Decades of Horror Classic Era Grue-Crew gives The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a strong recommendation. As of this writing, it is available to stream on Amazon Prime and on DVD from MPI Home Video.

"I got a thing about chickens." Exactly what does Harry Angel mean by that? Join your faithful Grue Crew - Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they follow Harry’s investigation from New York to New Orleans in Alan Parker’s  Angel Heart (1987).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 152 – Angel Heart (1987)

Harry Angel, a private investigator, is hired by a man who calls himself Louis Cyphre to track down a singer named Johnny Favorite. But the investigation takes an unexpected and somber turn.

IMDb

Alan Parker’s Angel Heart received a lot of publicity but mostly for the wrong reason: then 18-year-old Lisa Bonet’s sex scene with Mickey Rourke. Granted, it is a fantastic scene, but it’s not the only reason to watch Angel Heart. Bill keeps on about the not-so-subtle names of the characters but appreciates the acting and the look of the film. Lisa Bonet is the star attraction for Crystal but she laments the predictability of the story. Chad has a bone to pick with Robert De Niro’s “Special Appearance by” billing but he thoroughly enjoyed Mickey Rourke’s performance. Angel Heart holds a special place in Jeff’s heart for several reasons, including his appreciation of William Hjortsberg’s source material. Your 70s Grue-Crew also gets into the development of the film which includes names like John Frankenheimer and Robert Redford.

Despite their poking some fun at this film, your Grue-Crew recommends it for the setpieces, the acting, and the neo-noir look of the film. If you haven’t seen Angel Heart, now is a good time to check it out. At this writing, it is available VOD and as on Blu-ray from Lionsgate.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1970s. In episode 153, the 80s Grue-Crew takes a look at The Dead Zone (1983), based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by David Cronenberg, starring Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt, Martin Sheen, Herbert Lom, Anthony Zerbe, and Colleen Dewhurst.

“Ohhh, in other words, you don’t want to pick the pick because the pick is a pick and a shovel isn’t the pick. If you pick the pick to pick, the shovel isn’t the pick." "Now you’ve got it." "Now I got it. I don’t even know what I’m talking about." These quotes are all you need to know who stars in this episode’s film. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, and Jeff Mohr - as they get lost in the desert with Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 70 – Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955)

Bud and Lou find themselves pursued by an Egyptian cult for a special medallion linked to a walking mummy.

IMDb

Your Decades of Horror Classic Era Grue-Crew chose Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy as their second Abbott and Costello Universal Monster film after covering Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein in episode 44. Though Meet Frankenstein is obviously the cream of the crop, Whitney, Chad, and Jeff think this one is a bit underrated despite the ridiculous mummy costume. Whitney digs Marie Windsor’s portrayal of the smartest-one-in-the-room bad-girl and the way she puts up with the rest of the idiots surrounding her. Once again, Jeff overdoes it when it comes to delving into the character actors in the cast. Chad is all about Batman and connections to the Caped Crusader abound in this film.

If you dig the comic duo at all and are a Universal Monster fan (of course you are), Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy is worth your time. Your faithful Grue-Crew laughed and you will too. It’s available on Blu ray in multiple releases, most recently Shout! Factory’s Abbott & Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with the 1970s and 1980s. "Touch it! Go on, touch it!" Get your mind out of the gutter. The speaker isn’t talking about that “it.” Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they uncover the true story of Frankenstein in Frankenstein: The True Story (1973) … or not.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 109 – Frankenstein: The True Story (1973)

When the brilliant but unorthodox scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein rejects the artificial man that he has created, the Creature escapes and later swears revenge.

IMDb

Yet again, the Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew delves into the realm of television mini-series with Frankenstein: The True Story, broadcast in two parts in 1973. Bill points out exactly why the title is one of the biggest misnomers in film history. Chad had a problem with the creature (Michael Sarrazin) being so handsome in the beginning but enjoyed its deterioration as the film progressed. Doc opines that the 2-hour edited version available on Amazon Prime is a hot mess of bad editing and should probably be avoided. Jeff once again goes a bit fan-boy, this time for David McCallum.

Your Grue-Crew universally enjoyed the cast and some of the set pieces and are withholding judgment until the March 24, 2020 Scream Factory release. Maybe a quality copy of the unedited version will restore the film they remembered.

“From Marquette, Canada today comes word of a second ship destroyed by an enormous beast according to her Captain, George LeMay. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, Joseph Perry, and Jeff Mohr - as they leapfrog from the arctic to New York City to join the battle to stop The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)!

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 69 – The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)

A ferocious dinosaur awakened by an Arctic atomic test terrorizes the North Atlantic and, ultimately, New York City.

IMDb

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a landmark film for many reasons. Inspired by the success of a re-release of King Kong (1933) in 1952, it’s success, in turn, inspired Toho to move forward with the production of Godzilla (1954). It also gave Ray Harryhausen his first shot as head of special effects on a feature film and provided one of Ray Bradbury’s first paychecks for a feature film. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was also the first film featuring a giant creature that exists as the result of an atomic explosion. Put Eugène Lourié in the director’s chair, John L. Russell behind the camera, and enlist a supporting cast of topnotch character actors and you have a recipe for success.

All members of your Classic Era Grue-Crew love this film and appreciate its place in film history. They gush over Harryhausen’s stop-motion animation skills and dedication, the direction, cinematography, script, and cast. If you haven’t seen this film for a while, it might be time to revisit The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. It’s a gem of a film.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with the 1970s and 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1953).

"I'm supposed to read you your rights. But you're in *Mooney's* jail, and in Mooney's jail, you ain't *got* no rights!" I wonder what the Mooney ventriloquist dummy thinks about that? Join your faithful Grue Crew - Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they go on an outing to the big top for some cotton candy and Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 150 – Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Aliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.

IMDb

You’re faithful Grue-Crew are a little scattered in this episode. You see, due to a technical glitch, everyone sounded like Killer Klowns on the first go-around so they had to record this episode a second time. They got a little slap-happy in the process and, well, they now know whether or not Crystal likes ice cream.

At any rate, they do get to Killer Klowns from Outer Space and reach a quick, unanimous consensus: they love it! They discuss the Chiodo Brothers, John Vernon’s turn as Officer Mooney, and the splendid and colorful look and feel of the film. Jeff was the Killer Klowns virgin of the crew, but he got so excited after their first attempt at recording the episode, he purchased the Blu ray and took a dive into the extras. This was indeed a great pick by Crystal and she recounts exactly why she loves it so much. Bill is impressed with the practical effects and sympathizes with the problems that had to be dealt with while filming something like Killer Klowns from Outer Space that seems to be a creation like no other. From Chad, we learn about yet another childhood fear of his.

      • Karen Black as Amelia
      • Frank Welker and Walker Edmiston (uncredited) as the voice of the Zuni doll

Each of the members of the Grue-Crew for this episode viewed Trilogy of Terror during its television premiere in 1975 and it made an indelible mark on each of their psyches. Of course, that mark, the one that created nightmares and lost sleep, is left by the final segment in which the Zuni doll runs amok. The Grue-Crew also has a heightened appreciation for Karen Black’s acting abilities after rewatching the film and her four performances therein. They also all agree that the terror in the final segment is just as strong and effective as it was in 1975. If you haven’t seen Dan Curtis’ Trilogy of Terror recently, you owe yourself a rewatch. It’s that good. At least, the Zuni-warrior doll piece is that good!

“It is my considered opinion that rat No. 4 is sitting inside that cat.” Ha! The jokes on you, Jennings! It’s actually in your pocket. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt Whitney Collazo, Joseph Perry, and Jeff Mohr - as they take a trip to Marineland to see the Gill-Man in his second theatrical outing, Revenge of the Creature (1955).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 68 – Revenge of the Creature (1955)

The Creature from the Black Lagoon has been captured by scientists and transported to an aquarium in south Florida. Once there, he becomes attracted to lovely female scientist Helen Dobson and manages to escape and kidnap her, and heads to Jacksonville, with her real-life love in pursuit.

IMDb

Universal International Pictures followed up the success of Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) the following year with Revenge of the Creature, another 3-D entry to the Univeral Horror catalog. Chad Hunt continues his love for the Gill-man, first revealed in episode 3 of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era. Your loyal Grue-Crew note the differences between this film and its predecessor, both in the pacing of the story and in the Florida setting. They are also impressed by the performance turned in by Lori Nelson as scientist Helen Dobson. Of course, Clint Eastwood also comes up in conversation. They all recommend Revenge of the Creature despite its marked departure from the feel and tone of the first film in the series.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with the 1970s and 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953).
