Jeff sees several giallo tropes present in Torso and thinks the first hour seemed a bit pedestrian. During the last half-hour, however, the tension really ramped up. Though not a big giallo fan in general, Chad also thinks the first hour is a tough slog, but the third act more than makes up for it. The trailer for Torso is one of Bill’s favorites and he agrees the film’s tone flips about an hour into it. He also gives it credit for being pretty stylistic, especially for the time in which it is released. Doc, however, found himself rather surprised that he likes Torso as much as he does, citing its brutality, the switch in the main character, and the abundance of suspects as reasons why.
The Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew appreciate Torso, some more than others, but they all agree it is worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of giallo films. As of this writing, Torso is available to stream from Shudder and on physical media as a Special Edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

A woman in search of her missing sister uncovers a Satanic cult in New York's Greenwich Village, and finds that they may have something to do with her sibling's random disappearance.

The fourth of nine budget “horror” films produced by Val Lewton for RKO Radio Pictures, The Seventh Victim falls squarely in the atmospheric subgenre of horror film noir. Joseph expresses his love for Val Lewton, film noir, and horror, calling The Seventh Victim a great combination of the three. Whitney appreciates stories with multiple relationships between characters who have more to offer than what is on the surface, and finds such a story in The Seventh Victim. The stunning visuals filled with shadow and unusual camera angles are what captured Daphne’s attention, and, of course, she loved seeing a younger version of the Beav’s dad (Hugh Beaumont). “Pure Lewton” is what Chad calls this amazing example of noir filmmaking, with it’s great mixture of horror and film noir style. Jeff loves how the story puts a naive and innocent main character in a world where everything seems cryptic and no one seems to say what they really mean.
Of course, the Classic Era Grue-Crew gives The Seventh Victim a hearty recommendation. As of this writing, The Seventh Victim can be streamed from Shudder. Other Lewton-RKO films currently on Shudder are Cat People (1942), I Walked with a Zombie (1943), The Leopard Man (1943), Curse of the Cat People (1944), The Body Snatcher (1945), and Isle of the Dead (1945).

In this tongue-in-cheek sequel, the benevolent bog creature falls for the vegetarian, plant-loving daughter of the evil scientist who created him.

This “sequel” to Wes Craven’s original doesn’t measure up to that film or the comic source material. Even though he’s a big Swamp Thing fan and likes the Swamp Thing and creature designs by Carl Fullerton in this one, Chad says The Return of Swamp Thing suffers from superhero-itis, when everyone wants to do a superhero movie but not to good effect, especially when Swampie is not a superhero. According to Bill, once you accept The Return of Swamp Thing is an atrocity, you can enjoy it for its goofy 80s shenanigans. Crystal agrees it’s a horrible, awful movie but it can be entertaining if you just have fun with it and the creatures in Dr. Arkane’s menagerie. Based on the poster, Jeff assumed he was in for camp, good or bad, and he loved the Creedence Clearwater Revival music with the comic graphics in the intro.
Your Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew finds this one to be tough to recommend, but if you’re a Swamp Thing fan, you’ll want to check this one out. As of this writing, The Return of Swamp Thing is available for streaming on Amazon Prime and on a 2-disc Special Edition Blu-ray from Lightyear Video.

A psychotic redneck, who owns a dilapidated hotel in rural East Texas, kills various people who upset him or his business, and he feeds their bodies to a large crocodile that he keeps as a pet in the swamp beside his hotel.

Eaten Alive is not one of Tobe Hooper’s better films. Even so, the cast is filled with horror-cred: Marilyn Burns, William Finley, Robert Englund, Carolyn Jones, and Kyle Richards. Jeff loved the cast and is a big fan of Neville Brand’s work, but the crocodile was, at best, suspect. Chad really hated the film. Eaten Alive should be a good film but he wonders if big ideas and available resources were confined by the budget leaving the film with characters being weird for the sake of being weird. Bill reminds us that Tobe Hooper left before production ended and goes on to describe the story as having no narrative, William Finley as being off the wall, and the crocodile as terrible. Having said that, however, he also describes Eaten Alive as interesting in that some of the scenes are beautifully shot. Doc agrees with Chad that there seems to be a vision buried in this movie that doesn’t materialize, making it hard to watch as ideas fail to gel and in the end, it doesn’t work.
Check this puppy out if you are a Tobe Hooper completist or if you want to see Neville Brand chew some scenery and see William Finley chew even more scenery. Eaten Alive is currently available to stream VOD and as physical media on Blu-ray discs from Arrow Video (2-disc Special Edition).

The Bad Seed is Whitney’s pick. She remembers watching it as a child and being shocked at Rhoda’s, the title character’s, behavior. Now, however, she is intrigued by the conflict between the ideas of being born evil and learned behavior. Chad also saw The Bad Seed at a young age and recalls wondering why Rhoda was never disciplined. He has also come to love the movie and its nature vs. nurture concept. In Daphne’s view, The Bad Seed has a very creepy vibe and is populated with some super creepy characters. In particular, she gives praise to Henry Jones for his performance as Leroy. Jeff is impressed by the group of people involved in making The Bad Seed, including the lead actors, director, writers, cinematographer, and an excellent cast of supporting actors.
The Bad Seed is unanimously recommended by the members of the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew. At present, The Bad Seed is available to stream from several VOD services and as physical media on a Blu-ray disc from Warner Brothers.

Twin gynecologists take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman.

Dead Ringers is Crystal’s pick so it should come as no surprise that she loves the film. She thinks it’s beautifully shot, loves Jeremy Irons, and of course, don’t forget … Cronenberg! Bill also loves Jeremy Irons’ performance, going so far as to say he was robbed for not being at least nominated for an Academy Award. Appreciating Dead Ringers more every time he sees it, Chad identifies it as a squirm-inducing, psychological thriller and character study of twins. Jeff is also on the Jeremy Irons bandwagon, lauding his nuanced performance of the twins, but also appreciates Genevieve Bujold’s critical role as the catalyst to the twins’ downfalls. Of course, everyone else agrees with Crystal on how beautiful the cinematography and the production design are.
Dead Ringers is worth a watch and even several rewatches. As of this writing, it is available for streaming on Amazon Prime and as physical media on a Blu-ray disc from Shout Factory.
