“I think this place is possessed by demonic demons.” “Your head's going to be possessed by the butt of this gun if you don't shut up.” Sounds like a typical conversation while hunting demonic scarecrows in the dark. Join your faithful Grue-Crew – Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they check out Scarecrows (1988), a movie that saw a limited theatrical release in one theater… in Des Moines, Iowa.

Criminals hijack a plane and force the pilot and his daughter to fly them to Mexico. However, an unexpected landing finds them in a cemetery inhabited by killer scarecrows.

IMDb

Scarecrows is Jeff’s pick. He just couldn’t resist a movie released only in Des Moines and, as it turns out, he kind of likes it, especially the effects and the nighttime camera work. It’s better than Bill thought it was going to be even though there’s no real explanation for the supernatural occurrences except… occult! He describes Scarecrows as fairly well made and technically sound with good effects work. Chad, too, is pleasantly surprised with Scarecrows. He felt like he was transported back to a theater in the 80s watching a cheesy movie with outstanding makeup effects.

If you’re up for a trip out to the country for an encounter with a supernatural pickup and possessed scarecrows, as of this writing, Scarecrows is available to stream on Amazon Prime. Unfortunately, the 2015 Shout Factory Blu-ray is out-of-print.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be The Stepfather (1987) starring Terry O’Quinn. Nothing says psychotic family member like the holidays.

“Yeah! We're alive and we're safe... and we're shipwrecked. Two outta three ain't bad.” Yeah, that’s not a line from the hit Meatloaf song. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they check out some stop motion animation and a lot of walking in  Planet of Dinosaurs (1977).

A spaceship gets lost and is forced to make an emergency landing on an unknown planet. The planet looks much like Earth, only with no trace of civilization. Soon the crew discovers that there are dinosaurs on the planet and blood-thirsty buggers at that. The crew hopes to be found and rescued, but they have to struggle to survive until then.

IMDb

Being the lover of stop motion animation that he is, it’s not surprising that Bill picked Planet of Dinosaurs for this episode. For Bill, it’s immediately apparent that most of this film’s low budget is used to fund the stop motion animation. Bill enjoyed the effects and despite all the walking the characters do in Planet of Dinosaurs, he has a certain amount of affection for this film. Chad is a big fan of Doug Beswick’s and Jim Danforth’s work so he loves the stop motion animation in Planet of Dinosaurs. Outside of the dinosaurs, however, he calls it a horrible movie, stating that if you’re going to watch it, you should watch the RiffTrax version. Jeff, too, loves what he calls the amazingly smooth stop motion animation but laments that there is just too much not-dinosaur in the film. Doc went into Planet of the Dinosaurs with low expectations and those low expectations were met. He finds the movie to be charming, in a weird and cheesy sort of way, and even ambitious. In the end, though, Planet of Dinosaurs is just kind of awful.

If you’re a fan of stop motion animation, you should definitely check out Planet of Dinosaurs. At the time of this writing, the movie and RiffTrax: Planet of the Dinosaurs can be streamed from Amazon Prime and a variety of other streaming services.

A religious fanatic marries a gullible widow whose young children are reluctant to tell him where their real daddy hid the $10,000 he'd stolen in a robbery.

IMDb

You’ll find no hate for The Night of the Hunter from the Classic Era Grue-Crew except on Chad’s fingers. This is Daphne’s pick and she loves The Night of the Hunter, calling it a beautiful piece of art. For Bill, the film has been in his DNA as far back as he can remember. He was scared out of his wits by Mitchum’s performance while other scenes were tear-inducing. Whitney sees the bond of siblings amidst the trauma the two children are dealing with in the real-life horror of The Night of the Hunter. This is one of Chad’s favorite films, referring to it as a beautiful, fairy tale of a movie with a dreamlike quality. He also tells a heartfelt story about watching The Night of the Hunter for the first time with his dad. Jeff found The Night of the Hunter to be a bit strange until he learned to view the exaggerations and eccentricities as seen through the eyes of young John. He now believes he must watch the movie much more often.

During the podcast, the Grue-Crew members refer several times to two videos. The first one is a 159-minute documentary, Charles Laughton Directs “The Night of the Hunter.” In the manner of silent film directors, Laughton almost never called “cut” to a scene, filming continuously through an entire reel while giving repeated direction to the actors to get the performance for which he was looking. IMDb describes the documentary as “an assembled compilation of footage from rushes, outtakes, and behind-the-scenes moments featuring Charles Laughton directing 'The Night of the Hunter.' The second video is a 5-minute video of Guillermo del Toro commenting on the importance to him of The Night of the Hunter. Links to the two videos are included below.

  1. Charles Laughton Directs “The Night of the Hunter” (2002)
  2. Guillermo del Toro on The Night of the Hunter:

At the time of this writing, The Night of the Hunter is available to stream from The Criterion Channel and various PPV services, and on physical media as a Criterion Blu-ray.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next on their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Whitney: Macario (1960), an acclaimed, Mexican, supernatural drama directed by Roberto Gavaldón. You will not want to miss that one!

“Now let me get this straight. You're telling me that these, these things are inside the Golden Gate Bridge, one. Two, that they only come out at night. And three, that they're responsible for the death of fifteen or more kids and three of my police officers? [breaks down laughing]” What’s so hard to believe about that? It is 80s horror, you know. Join your faithful Grue-Crew - Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr -  as they journey to the Golden Gate Bridge to battle monsters who are inexplicably known as Neon Maniacs (1986).

A group of teenagers in San Francisco discovers a nest of homicidal monsters living in a tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, but when they try to tell authorities, no one believes them.

IMDb

Neon Maniacs is Chad’s pick and he thinks it’s pretty cool. He loves the randomness of the story and let making sense be damned. Where do they come from? Why do monsters who can be destroyed by water live underneath a bridge? No one knows. Crystal loves Neon Maniacs, especially the music and the battle-of-the-bands sequence. Calling the story nearly nonexistent, she still thinks it’s awesome. Bill likens monsters vulnerable to water living under a bridge to vampires hiding in a garlic factory over a silver mine where they make crucifixes. According to Bill, Neon Maniacs is typical 80s horror with an ending that seems to be building up to something and then… fade to black and go home. Though the story is filled with huge holes and the police are more clueless than usual, Jeff had fun with Neon Maniacs, watching it with a big smile on his face.

Though Neon Maniacs is not a good movie by any measure, it is a fun watch. If you choose to do so, it is currently available to stream on Tubi and on YouTube, and on Blu-ray as Spanish or German imports.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be Scarecrows (1988), mostly because its one-theater theatrical release was in Des Moines, Iowa.

“I swear I'm telling the truth! Do I look like a sex murderer to you? Can you imagine me creeping around, strangling all those women with ties? That's ridiculous. For a start, I only own two.” Does that sound like a believable denial to you? Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they check out Alfred Hitchcock’s penultimate film, Frenzy (1972).

London is terrorized by a vicious sex killer known as The Necktie Murderer. Following the brutal slaying of his ex-wife, down-on-his-luck Richard Blaney is suspected by the police of being the killer. He goes on the run, determined to prove his innocence.

IMDb

Frenzy is Jeff’s pick and, maybe not surprisingly, he loves it. He points out the huge jump from Hitchcock pushing the censorship line with a scene of a toilet flushing in Psycho (1960) to the lurid kills and their aftermath as depicted in Frenzy. Bill is impressed with Frenzy and finds it to be simultaneously old-fashioned and modern. He also identifies a few top-notch Hitchcockian sequences. Calling Frenzy pure unadulterated Hitchcock, Chad loves how small details early mean something big later in the film. He also delights in the scenes between the Chief Inspector and his wife. Doc is a huge Hitchcock fan but does not like Frenzy, finding it to be an indication of Hitch losing his touch. In fact, he doesn’t like the characters, the cast, the dialogue, or the ending and vows never to watch it again.

Depending on the Grue-Crew members’ individual points-of-view, Frenzy is either Hitchcock’s last hurrah or a film to be avoided. In either case, at the time of this writing, Frenzy is available to stream from the Criterion Channel and multiple PPV services, and on physical media as a Blu-ray from ‎Universal Home Entertainment.

While you’re at it, check out Decades of Horror’s coverage of these Hitchcock classics: Classic Era #1 - Psycho (1960), Classic Era #32 - The Birds (1963).

When the police in a German city are unable to catch a child murderer, other criminals join in the manhunt.

IMDb

Daphne is taken in by Fritz Arno Wagner’s beautiful cinematography and Peter Lorre’s mind-blowing performance. She is also intrigued with how Lang uses sound, emphasizing silence as much as sound. Certain elements of M, for instance, the pacing, make it hard for Whitney to get into the film. On the other hand, she enjoys Peter Lorre’s performance and is definitely creeped out by some scenes. M seems almost like two different movies to Chad. The pacing during the first half is not to his liking, but once everyone is on the trail of Peter Lorre’s character, he really got into it. And, of course, Peter Lorre for the win! Jeff loves M and could watch it just for the cinematography and Peter Lorre’s acting.

You know you want to check out or revisit M, right? At the time of this writing, it is available to stream from HBO max, the Criterion Channel, and Kanopy. M is also available on physical media as a Criterion Collection Blu-ray.
