“They come here, they have a pretty nurse, then they can do a little something, bing-bang, then they study the liquid and tell you if you have a hereditary disease or if your gun's jammed.” Doesn’t he mean “bada-bing, bada-boom?”  Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, and Jeff Mohr - as they experience The Cat o’ Nine Tails (1971), a Giallo thriller from Dario Argento, starring Karl Malden and James Franciscus.

A newspaper reporter and a retired, blind journalist try to solve a series of killings connected to a pharmaceutical company's top-secret experimental research projects; in doing so they become targets of the killer.

- IMDb

The Cat o’ Nine Tails is pure Giallo, according to Bill, but still pretty subdued for an Argento film. As a reasonably straightforward detective story, it held his interest and Karl Malden is terrific. Not being a big Giallo fan, Chad enjoyed The Cat o’ Nine Tails more than he thought he would, specifically pointing to a couple of cool murder scenes and Malden’s fantastic performance. Jeff agrees that The Cat o’ Nine Tails is more mystery than horror and, as such, is true to original Giallo themes. He adds his love for Malden’s performance to the chorus and enjoys seeing Argento’s progression from The Bird with the Crystal Plummage (1970) to this film to Deep Red (1975) to Suspiria (1977). The Cat o’ Nine Tails has Doc’s attention with the idea of the two different types of journalists getting together, a couple of fascinating kills, keeping track of the red herrings, and putting a child in harm’s way. And then there’s the strange love scene between Catherine Spaak and James Franciscus. Hmm.

Giallo and Argento fans will want to see this film! As of this writing, The Cat o’ Nine Tails is available to stream from Shudder and The Criterion Channel and on physical media as a brand new 4K restoration on Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

Jonathan Harker begets the ire of Count Dracula after he accepts a job at the vampire's castle under false pretenses, forcing his colleague Dr. Van Helsing to hunt the predatory villain when he targets Harker's loved ones.

IMDb

Whitney had a “reel” treat when she first saw (Horror of) Dracula at Geoffrey Rayles’s Rayle Archives in Lenoir, NC where she was able to view the 1958, 35mm, Technicolor print along with a couple reels of the early 1960s re-release. Of course, she loved the movie. What’s not to like with Cushing, Lee, and Gough? For Chad, (Horror of) Dracula changed the way he looked at the Count and, along with The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), this one is his favorite Hammer film. Chad also has a heck of a story about the first time he saw the film at his grandparent’s house. Daphne had great fun watching Cushing and Lee, especially in the few scenes they had together in (Horror of) Dracula. Jeff is a big fan of Dracula (1931) but also loves Lee’s more feral, animalistic interpretation in (Horror of) Dracula

You might say Dick Klemensen gives truth to the statement, “If you show it, he will come,” when he drove over two hours across the state to catch a showing of (Horror of) Dracula at a drive-in theater in Des Moines. According to Dick, if you want to show someone a Hammer film who has never seen one, this is it. The film has everything: action, blood, fights, and pacing.

Incidentally, if you haven’t read an issue of The Little Shoppe of Horrors Magazine, edited and published by Dick Klemensen since 1972, head on over to their website and order yourself an issue (or two or three). They’re stock full (at about 100 pages of 8-point font) of interesting articles and art about classic British horror films.

Also be sure to check out The Men Who Made Hammer shorts (running between 15 and 60 minutes each) featuring Dick and produced by Constantine Nasr on the Scream Factory Blu-ray releases of the following Hammer films: X the Unkown (1956, Jimmy Sangster), The Brides of Dracula (1960, Jack Asher and Terence Fisher), The Curse of the Werewolf (1961, Roy Ashton), The Phantom of the Opera (1962, Anthony Hinds), The Kiss of the Vampire (1963, James Bernard and Bernard Robinson), The Lost Continent (1968, Michael Carreras & film commentary), and Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974, Roy Skeggs). The other entry in The Men Who Made Hammer series features Tony Dalton (author of Terence Fisher: Master of Gothic Cinema, 2021) discussing Freddie Francis on The Evil of Frankenstein (1964).

October is a great month to revisit this Hammer gem! As of this writing, (Horror of) Dracula is available for streaming on HBOmax.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next on their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Daphne, Antonio Margheriti’s The Long Hair of Death (1964) starring Barbara Steele!

"I can't exist by myself because I'm afraid of myself, ...because I'm the maker of my own evil." This quote is a pretty good metaphor for the theme of this movie… maybe? Join your faithful Grue-Crew - Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr -  as they relish Metrograph’s brand new 4K restoration of Possession (1981), Andrzej Zulawski’s brilliant and demented film.

A woman starts exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior after asking her husband for a divorce. Suspicions of infidelity soon give way to something much more sinister.

IMDb

Chad first saw this film at a drive-in theater when he was a teen and thought it was incredibly boring. This time around, he found the relationship split brought to life to be incredibly intense with the camera work adding to the claustrophobic feel. Crystal loved it as well, calling Possession brilliance wrapped in a madness spiral with an amazing monster. Generally, Bill is not a fan of “artsy-fartsy European” movies, but he agrees with Crystal that Possession is a masterpiece even though he is not sure if he understands it or if he is supposed to understand it. He calls Isabelle Adjani’s performance in this strange, well-directed, beautiful film to be one of the bravest he has seen. Jeff loves this film and is extremely excited to have the chance to cover it. He is delighted with the new 4K restoration from Metrograph which is far superior to the Blu-ray release in his collection.

If you’re interested in checking out this incredible 4K restoration of Possession, and you should be, it opens theatrically and digitally exclusively at the Metrograph October 1-14 and in theaters nationwide on October 15.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, and will be Rawhead Rex  (1986).  Really! They’re not kidding this time. You won’t want to miss that one!

TUDUM, NETFLIX Event Teases STRANGER THINGS Season 4, Introduces CREEL HOUSE

"Stranger Things season 4’s “Creel House” teaser introduces viewers to the title location, where some disturbing events happened in the 1950s when a family of four moved in. Cutting to the present day (within the Stranger Things timeline, that is), Dustin, Lucas, Max, Steve, and Robin break into Creel House searching for clues for something yet unknown, and the teaser ends with a shot of a grandfather clock in the attic, which then appears in the Upside Down version of the house, with the glass breaking at the end."

In 17th century England, the children of a village slowly convert into a coven of devil worshipers.

IMDb

The Blood on Satan’s Claw is frequently mentioned alongside Witchfinder General (1968) and The Wicker Man (1973) as a seminal film in the folk horror subgenre. Daphne describes it as super 70s and she loved the creepiness of the woods and the environment. The film’s amazing title captured Bill’s attention but unfortunately, his first viewing of The Blood on Satan’s Claw was a version in which an essential scene had been cut. Having since seen the complete version, he believes it to be an interesting film worth seeking out. For Chad, The Blood on Satan’s Claw had some unique ideas, in particular how the demon was reconstructed. Jeff found The Blood on Satan’s Claw to be quirky and the story to be a bit uneven but he thought the effects were excellent, especially when some devil’s skin was removed from one of the characters. Doc finds The Blood on Satan’s Claw to be very disjointed, making it hard to tell the protagonist from the antagonist and to stay interested.

Whether you’re a fan or not, you owe it to yourself to check out The Blood on Satan’s Claw. As of this writing, it is available to stream on Shudder and will be available on physical media as a part of ALL THE HAUNTS BE OURS: A COMPENDIUM OF FOLK HORROR [BLU-RAY BOX SET] due from Severin Films in December 2021.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Dario Argento’s The Cat o’ Nine Tails (1971), chosen by Bill! Be sure to join us for that one.

"No one can love you as much as we do. You know that." That’s what Mom always said, but when Boris Karloff says it, somehow, it carries more weight. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, and Jeff Mohr along with special guest Bill Mulligan - as they journey through the decades depicted in the three stories included in Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath (1963).

Boris Karloff hosts a trio of horror stories concerning a stalked call girl, a vampire-like monster who preys on his family, and a nurse who is haunted by her ring's rightful owner.

IMDb

Black Sabbath is a big hit with Whitney and her nephew, who realizes immediately that the woman getting the threatening telephone calls in “The Telephone” needed to get the heck out of there! Daphne had always watched the Italian version of Black Sabbath in the past so she loved hearing Karloff’s voice in the US release, and the more she learns about Bava, the more she appreciates the film. When Bill, DoH’s resident Bava-head, first saw Black Sabbath’s trick ending, it made him wonder what else wasn’t what he thought he was seeing. Jeff wishes that all the things he loves about Black Sabbath were combined in one version instead of being split between the Italian and US versions. Even so, he describes it as an amazing and beautiful film.

If you haven’t seen Black Sabbath in a while, the Classic Era Grue Crew thinks you owe it to yourself to catch it again. The film is currently available to stream on Shudder and on physical media as separate Blu-rays for the Italian or US versions from Kino Lorber.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next on their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Jeff, Hammer’s Horror of Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee! A solitary and strange preteen boy wreaks revenge on his harassers when he makes a disturbing discovery in the depth of a forest.

IMDb

Crystal is a big Frank Henenlotter fan so it’s no surprise that Basket Case is her pick and she still loves it, calling it super weird and super messed up. She also recommends the Joe Bob Briggs treatment, currently available on Shudder. Chad rented Basket Case as a VHS tape and he fell in love with it. He appreciates the way Henenlotter brings the oddest concepts to life and is able to mix just the right amount of comedy with horror. Back in the day, Bill used to hang out in Glens Falls, NY, one of the filming locations for Basket Case. Not surprisingly, the scene depicting “the boys” aunt reading to them while they sit in her lap always gets to him. Jeff is most impressed by the special effects found in Basket Case and all for a budget of $35,000.

Basket Case is currently available to stream on Shudder on a Blu-ray disc form Arrow Video.

The sole survivor of an interplanetary rescue mission searches for the only survivor of the previous expedition. He discovers a planet ruled by apes and an underground city run by telepathic humans.

IMDb

This one is Doc’s pick. Surprise! As you probably know, he’s a huge Planet of the Apes fan with all the gear and memorabilia to prove it. Having said that, Beneath the Planet of the Apes is not one of his franchise favorites, especially because Roddy McDowell isn’t in it. Even though Jeff loves Planet of the Apes (1968), he didn’t care for Beneath the Planet of the Apes, especially the “beneath” parts. On the other hand, Bill loved the pulpiness of the “beneath” parts but didn’t care as much for the setup. Chad is also a huge Planet of the Apes fan but he has no affection for Beneath the Planet of the Apes. He is turned off by some of the ape effects, cheapened by budget cuts, and the film completely lost him when it went to mutants living underground. The 70s Grue Crew also waxes nostalgic about family-watching in the pre-cable, pre-recording devices era.

At the time of this writing, Beneath the Planet of the Apes is available for streaming from HBOmax and various other VOD services.

Evil aliens attack Earth and set their terrible "Plan 9" into action. As the aliens resurrect the dead of the Earth, the lives of the living are in danger.

IMDb

In case you didn’t guess, Plan 9 from Outer Space is Whitney’s pick. (Remember, her first pick was The Killer Shrews (1959) for episode 45.) She watched this as a teenager and was rendered speechless by how many things Wood did that are filmmaker no-nos. Even though she was astounded in a bad way, she still thinks the film is a riot. Plan 9 from Outer Space was recommended to Chad by friends. He was originally dumbfounded wondering how the film got made and with Bela Lugosi, no less. Now he has fun watching its magic. Daphne encountered Plan 9 from Outer Space in the 99-cent VHS bin at her local thrift store and immediately loved it for its unintentional camp. Jeff doesn’t get the film’s “the worst movie ever made” label because he’s seen a lot of movies that were worse than Plan 9 from Outer Space. He was amazed by the persistence and the audacity (or was it cluelessness?) of those involved in making a film that in spite of its many faults, or maybe because of them, is so much fun.

The Classic Era Grue Crew highly recommends Plan 9 from Outer Space. Seriously! It is currently available to stream on the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel and a variety of other streaming services.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next on their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Chad, Mario Bava’s classic anthology, Black Sabbath (1963), starring Boris Karloff!

A solitary and strange preteen boy wreaks revenge on his harassers when he makes a disturbing discovery in the depth of a forest.

IMDb

The Pit is Bill’s pick and he describes it as a fascinating mess of a movie that epitomizes that certain something indicative of low-budget, Canadian horror movies of the time. Crystal loves The Pit because it is so cringy and gross, adding that the hypersexual kid is disgusting yet compelling. The Pit would’ve been loved by 15-year-old Chad but it is a tough watch for him now, especially with the annoying kid as the main character. Jeff agrees that The Pit is a bit of a mess and doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be, citing how the music often doesn’t fit the scene.

If you’re a fan of low-budget 80s trash, check out The Pit. As of this writing, The Pit is available for streaming on Shudder and on physical media as a Blu-ray disc from KL Studio Classics.

A young woman goes searching for her missing artist father. Her journey takes her to a strange Californian seaside town governed by a mysterious undead cult.

Messiah of Evil is Chad’s pick and he likes some of the ideas behind it, calling it interesting but weird. In particular, he liked the concept of the Dark Stranger but he wanted more. Bill points out that Messiah of Evil has a lot of supporters, describing it as an art film with some cool set pieces and backgrounds. In the end, however, it fits into the category of the whole not being equal to the sum of its parts. Messiah of Evil has an appealing plotline but the story leaves out too much detail for Jeff. On the other hand, he always loves a dose of Elisha Cook Jr. and Royal Dano. Doc thinks Messiah of Evil to be an absolute mess, calling it the longest 90 minutes of his life. Once in a while, you get a really cool shot that is visually interesting, but in the end, it feels like a student film to him.

If you are one of the film’s supporters or just want to check it out, Messiah of Evil is currently available to stream on Shudder and Paramount Plus

Thrown out of his monastery for licentious and drunken behavior, Rasputin travels to St Petersburg to try his luck. Through a dalliance with one of the czarina's ladies in waiting he soon gains influence at court with his powers of healing and of hypnotism. But he also makes enemies who wish to see him dead.

IMDb

Rasputin: The Mad Monk is Daphne’s pick; it seems she wanted more Barbara Shelley after the Classic Era Grue Crew discussed Quatermass and the Pit (1965) in episode 93. She loves Shelley’s and Lee’s performances and she revels in the total “Hammer-ness” of the film which showcases Bernard Robinson’s production design and Rosemary Burrows’ costumes. Chad points out some of the historical discrepancies between Rasputin: The Mad Monk and the actual life of Grigori Rasputin. He also describes Lee’s performance as commanding the movie with a power that draws you in, labeling Rasputin one of his favorite Lee characters. Lee’s performance is also what captures Whitney’s attention. She’s especially impressed with his versatility in playing this hypnotic and malevolent character. Jeff’s on board with the Lee fanatics saying he can’t take his eyes off Lee’s forceful, hypnotic portrayal and adding that he loved the rest of the cast, the sets, and the wardrobe.

As of this writing, Rasputin: The Mad Monk is available to stream on the Classic Horror Movie Channel and as physical media on a Blu-ray disc from Shout! Factory.

A young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believes that everyone over age 18 must be killed.

IMDb

Jeff picked Children of the Corn thinking he might have missed something in his original viewing, which was not favorable. He is, however, disappointed to find his assessment hasn’t changed. He calls Isaac (John Franklin) and Malachi (Courtney Gains) the best things about the film but laments the filmmakers didn’t stick with the original script or something closer to King’s short story. Crystal saw Children of the Corn when she was a little kid, probably too little she admits, and she loved the idea of kids ruling the world. She still loves the film but goes so far as to say it does suffer a bit now. Hating it then and still not thinking too much of it, Chad felt cheated by the ending. He did find the character of Isaac mesmerizing but he still doesn’t understand why Children of the Corn is sometimes referred to as a classic. Bill loves King’s original story and is irritated with the film when almost immediately he realizes it doesn’t follow the story’s plot. He likes the film's title, the poster, and the great folk horror mythology of “He Who Walks Behind The Rows,” but, in his view, the filmmakers made too many bad choices.

If you are so inclined, Children of the Corn is currently available for streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime and on physical media as a Special Edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

13-year-old Rynn Jacobs lives alone in a high-class Quebec small town, but unknown to the neighbors, she is leading a secret and dangerous life.

IMDb

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane is Bill’s pick and for him, the film is worth a watch just for Jody Foster’s and Martin Sheen’s performances, describing the then 13-year-old Foster as having a presence and confidence achieved by few and Sheen as displaying his considerable talent for playing creepy. Chad agrees that The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane is creepy, disturbing, and very well-acted, and he loves the ending even though it’s cringeworthy. The nude scene is unnecessary in Jeff's view, but he is impressed with the number of taboos included in the story. The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane made a huge impression on Doc at a young age, especially the whole almond thing. He’s also impressed by the pacing and loves Jodie Foster’s performance, calling the last scene a classic. Maybe it is redundant to reiterate (see what I did there?) that your 70s Grue-Crew is unanimously gah-gah over this film.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane is currently available to stream from Shudder and Amazon Prime and on physical media as a Blu-ray disc from Kino Lorber.

After destroying a giant asteroid heading towards Earth, a group of scientists unknowingly bring back a strange green substance that soon mutates into a monster.

IMDb

Special guest Doc Rotten instantly fell in love with The Green Slime the first time he heard the theme song, so much so that he yearns for a remake. He’s also a big fan of Richard Jaeckel’s work, pointing to his performances in William Girdler’s Grizzly (1976) and Day of the Animals (1977), and of director Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale, 2000). For Whitney, doing the podcast is like treasure hunting and this episode’s treasure is the cheesy fun of The Green Slime. She also singles out the work of special effects artists Yukio Monoda and Yokura Watanabe. Loving it from the first time he saw it, Chad still finds something new each time he watches The Green Slime. He also appreciates the cool science concepts and how much fun the monsters are. Jeff joins the lovefest, commenting on his affection for the terrible dialogue and admitting to a boyhood bromance with Robert Horton’s portrayal of Flint McCullough in Wagon Train (1957-1962).

Regular followers of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era know the Grue-Crew are always looking for a Batman connection and for The Green Slime, Chad and Doc point out maybe the biggest Batman connection possible. Screenplay co-writer Bill Finger was officially and legally recognized as the co-creator of Batman in 2015, the righting of a wrong that was long overdue. In the conversation, Chad also recommends Batman and Bill (2017), a documentary about Bill Finger and the fight to gain him the recognition he was due, currently streaming on Hulu.

Lastly, as promised by Doc, here are links to the theme song of The Green Slime as heard in the trailer and a longer version with a kickass guitar solo released as a single from MGM Records.

A small-town farmer's son reluctantly joins a traveling group of vampires after he is bitten by a beautiful drifter.

IMDb

Near Dark is Chad’s pick and he loves the dirty, gritty, and nasty version of vampires depicted in this modernized western, calling it one of his favorite vampire movies. Tangerine Dream’s soundtrack is also a big plus in Chad’s book. Crystal loves a good vampire movie and ranks Near Dark alongside Fright Night (1985) and The Lost Boys (1987). For her, Bill Paxton’s performance is a big part of what makes this movie so good and, of course, Adrian Pasdar’s presence in the cast doesn’t hurt either. Bill loves how Near Dark nails the kind of miserable, addictive, grimy existence vampires would have instead of glorifying them. He also thinks the film is perfectly cast, especially the Aliens (1986) alumni. Jeff also loves Bill Paxton’s performance and points out this is the last film produced by DEG before it went bankrupt, severely hampering the film’s marketing.

The 80s Grue-Crew also recommends the first Decades of Horror 1980s podcast on Near Dark, recorded live from DragonCon 2017 and featuring Thomas Mariani, Christopher G. Moore, Doc Rotten, Bill Mulligan, and special guest C. Robert Cargill. You can check it out at Decades of Horror 1980s Episode 116.

If you haven’t seen it for a while or maybe if it just slipped through the cracks for you, Near Dark is currently streaming on Shudder. Check it out!

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be Children of the Corn (1984). You won’t want to miss that one!
