“You’ve made an unbreakable vow. In the name of vengeance, you must foreswear all human emotions, all love and hate, everything.” Your basic all-inclusive vow, then? Got it. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they check out the major influence for Tarantino’s Kill Bill Duology, Lady Snowblood(1973).

Synopsis: A young woman is trained from birth to be a deadly instrument of revenge against the swindlers who destroyed her family

Lady Snowblood, the horror-adjacent inspiration for Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) & Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), is Jeff’s pick and he loves this movie, describing it as a visual feast with a non-traditional story structure incorporating Japanese culture and history. It is so much fun!

Seeing Lady Snowblood for the first time with excellent visual quality, Bill is completely absorbed in the film. He was already familiar with the lead actress, Meiko Kaji, from Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 (1972), which he also loved, and he loves her performance. It’s the kind of performance the viewer can read a lot into. He describes the character and Kaji’s performance as a female version of Clint Eastwood’s “man with no name.”

This is Doc’s first time watching Lady Snowblood and he falls in love with the movie. The simple story with an interesting structure, amazing sound effects, plenty of gore for the gorehounds out there, and the great screen presence of the lead actress all contribute to him cherishing every moment of Lady Snowblood.

You’ve probably guessed by now that the Decades of Horror 70s Grue Crew heartily recommend Lady Snowblood. At the time of this writing, it is available to stream from HBOmax, the Criterion Channel, and various PPV sources. In terms of physical media, it is available in The Complete Lady Snowblood (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray], which also includes Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance (1974). And if you are as infatuated with the acting of Meiko Kaji, you might want to check out her Female Prisoner series  – Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion (1972), Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 (1972), Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable (1973), and Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701’s Grudge Song (1973) – all of which are currently available to stream from Shudder.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by Bill, will be The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973. Ray Harryhausen, Caroline Munro, John Phillip Law, Takis Emmanuel, Tom Baker, Robert Shaw, and the usual assortment of stop-motion animation creatures? Oh yeah!

Synopsois: A frustrated crime columnist and thriller writer wants accurate crimes for his next book so he hypnotizes his assistant to make him commit the required crimes

Steven Turek of the DieCast Movie Podcast joins the Decades of Horror Classic Era Grue Crew for this episode and, in fact, picked the topic of discussion, Horrors of the Black Museum, an American-British production distributed by American International Pictures and Anglo-Amalgamated Film Distributors. As Steven points out, even though the film is blatantly billed in the U.S. as containing Hypno-Vista, there is nary an example of hypnosis in the story. For Steven, this Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde mashup is all about inventive kills with a few gadgets thrown in for good measure.

Daphne points out that Horrors of the Black Museum is part of what has been called Anglo-Amalgamated’s Sadian trilogy along with Circus of Horrors (1960) and Peeping Tom (1960). From her point of view, it’s a fun film and she most enjoys Michael Gough’s arrogant character and the incredible kills.

Michael Gough’s scenery-chewing performance is what stands out for Chad in Horrors of the Black Museum. It’s an example of good acting coupled with a zany story with seemingly arbitrary twists and insane kills. Jeff agrees with Chad’s appraisal of Gough’s performance. For him, Horrors of the Black Museum is not a great movie, but it sure is fun watching Michael Gough chewing accompanied by the unique kills, the first of which takes place within the first three minutes of the movie.

Now, about that HypnoVista thing. A thirteen-minute prologue was added to the U.S. release by the folks at AIP as a Castle-esque gimmick. It featured hypnotist Emile Franchele and obliquely introduces the HypnoVista concept. Most streaming sources do not include this prologue, but it can be viewed here: Hypno-Vista intro of Horrors of the Black Museum  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWgU1lJHB4k

At the time of this writing, Horrors of the Black Museum is available to stream from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV, and Tubi.

Be sure to check out our very own Whitney Collazo and Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff as they join Steven and Alistair Hughes for a discussion of Hammer’s Vampire Lovers (1970) on Diecast Movie Podcast episode 125/Hammerama 7. Steve also conducts a very interesting interview of Whitney on episode 118.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by guest host and special effects artist Dirk Rogers: Matango (Attack of the Mushroom People, 1963). Get ready for some body horror from Toho and Ishirô Honda!

FEEDBACK

ANDY L - Hi Doc,
I've been meaning to write for a while but been rather busy. Just wanted to say that I’m glad to see the return of horror news to Horror news radio. I think it was a good choice to divide things into horror news radio for news, and Gruesome magazine for reviews. It was often the case in the past or there’s a lot of overlap between what belonged in what feed. This is a much more clear delineation.
While I agree with you that it’s nice to see Kurt and Wyatt Russell together on screen, I still have a bit of misgivings about the idea of either a Godzilla or a king Kong series. Not sure if either one is really well designed for that kind of multiple interconnected episodes. However, I will keep an open mind. Thank the crew for the continued entertaining podcast

DON JOE - These all look good to me but a new Marcus Dunstan film gets the vote from me.
The dude has a great track record with multiple franchise pictures under his belt with writing and directing credits on Feast, Saw, Collector, Piranha. Although it's just a story credit, his take on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a lot of fun and showed he could work in the family horror category too. Also loved his Into the Dark episode 'Pilgrim', a highlight episode on an under appreciated series. Here's hoping this next directing credit goes well and gets him even more work.

PAUL CARRO - I will watch anything with Samara Weaving, she has yet to be in a film that I did not enjoy. Great show!

CHAD WHITE - looking forward to Spirit Halloween. actually looks better than I expected.
Thank you for hanging out with the Grue-Crew. Be sure to hit the LIKE, SUBSCRIBE buttons, or Share with a Friend. Every click counts.

A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet.

Crystal has always been a fan of fantasy and has loved Krull since her childhood so it’s not surprising that this is her pick. In fact, she always wanted to be Lyssa. She also loves the handsome and oh-so-precious lead and the costumes, and when she first saw the film, she was afraid of the Widow of the Web.

Steven Archer’s stop motion animation of the crystal spider is Bill’s favorite part of Krull. Well, that and the cyclops. He’s disappointed in the way the Beast is shot, especially after learning of all that went into its design. And, of course, you’ve got to love the glaive, a very stupid yet very cool weapon.

Chad is a big fan of sword and sorcery, and distinctive weapons so Krull is one of his favorites. He is particularly impressed with the cyclops, the beast, and some of the sets with their feel of German expressionism. He does, however, view it as being incohesive with a lot of the story that doesn’t make sense. Jeff describes Krull as a beautiful movie with its sets, locations, production design, and costumes, He also gives a special nod to Freddie Jones for the added gravitas he gives the film.

If you are hungering for some glaive-work or an 80s, sword and sorcery, quest movie with horrific elements (did we forget to mention the changelings?), Krull is just the ticket. At the time of this writing, Krull is available for streaming from HBOmax and various PPV options. As far as physical media, Krull is currently available as a Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Blu-ray.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be Cannibal Apocalypse (1983), directed by Antonio Margheriti and starring John Saxon! Or is it Cannibals in the Streets? Or Apocalypse domani? Or Invasion of the Fleshhunters? Or Cannibal Massacre? Or… well, you get the picture.

Synopsis: After being selected at random by a computer to seek safety in an underground bomb shelter on the eve of a nuclear attack, a group of refugees makes a horrible realization: They are sharing the space with a colony of vampire bats.

Chosen Survivor is a movie Grue-Believers will remember as one mentioned more than once by The Black Saint. It took the 70s Grue Crew a while, but they are finally covering it. Chad describes Chosen Survivors as an apocalyptic tale with cool actors that he kind of likes but with which he is also kind of bored to tears. In the end, he was hoping the bats would eat everyone. Chosen Survivors feels like a 70s TV movie to Bill and most of it looked to him almost like it was shot through gauze. On top of that, a fear of bats is not one of his phobias and the inaccuracy in the film’s depiction of vampire bats took him out of the movie.

Jeff thinks the Chosen Survivors has a lot of cool visuals despite the omnipresent soft focus. He enjoys it even though the plot is a bunch of nonsense and found it a little interesting in conjunction with the actual plan the government had formulated in the event of a nuclear apocalypse. The pure, 70s-gold cast is the high point for Doc. Describing Chosen Survivors as more science fiction than horror with reasons to like it, in the end, he admits it’s not very good.

If a group of people locked up in a facility far underground during a nuclear apocalypse while under attack by unnaturally behaving vampire bats is your thing, you need to check out Chosen Survivors. At the time of this writing, it is available to stream from YouTube and on physical media as a Kino Lorber Blu-ray.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by Jeff, will be Lady Snowblood (1973), complete with swordplay and blood galore.

A scientist has a horrific accident when he tries to use his newly invented teleportation device.

IMDb

The first of five “Fly” movies, The Fly is Jeff’s pick for this episode. It’s one of those movies from his childhood that indelibly printed its horrific scenes in his memory. Watching now, he is still impressed with the movie, especially in the way the story is told and with the Ben Nye-created makeup effects.

Chad agrees that The Fly is a fantastic horror film. It feels more real to him than a lot of science fiction-horror movies of the 50s adding that it is the characters that help make it so. The reveal of Andre’s (David Hedison) fly head feels almost like the face reveal in The Phantom of the Opera (1925). The Fly was nightmare fuel for Whitney when she first saw it as a child on Halloween night, complete with a candy bag that included fake spiders. Daphne fell in love with The Fly during the first few minutes when blood drips down the side of an hydraulic press and the night watchman’s scream morphs into a telephone ringing in Francois’s (Vincent Price) office.

It’s probably not surprising that the Classic Era Grue Crew thinks The Fly is a true classic of the horror genre. If you’re ready to refresh your memory, as of this writing, The Fly can be streamed from HBO max as well as several PPV sources. It is also available on physical media as a 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and as one of five Blu-ray discs included in Scream Factory’s The Fly Collection. Also included in The Fly Collection are Return of the Fly (1959), Curse of the Fly (1965), The Fly (1986), and The Fly II (1989).

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by next episode’s guest host, Steven Turek: Horrors of the Black Museum (1959) starring Michael Gough.

The almost-human son of “Brundlefly” searches for a cure to his mutated genes while being monitored by a nefarious corporation that wishes to continue his father’s experiments.

IMDb

The Fly II ain’t no slouch, even when compared to David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986). This one is Bill’s pick and to his mind, even though The Fly II doesn’t have Cronenberg, effects guru Chris Walas does an excellent job directing his first film. It has a number of high points, including a really monstrous monster.

Chad is glad they didn’t try to redo The Fly, taking The Fly II in a different direction and letting it tell its own story while carrying on themes from the first movie, thanks to writing from Frank Darabont. He loves the effects and the insane gore and almost always goes on to watch The Fly II whenever he watches The Fly.

Crystal likes The Fly II almost as much as The Fly because there are clear antagonists that get what they deserve. She loves the music and the crazy effects of this real and true sequel. She also identifies Eric Stoltz as a phenomenal actor. The Fly II is far better than Jeff remembers it being. He specifically calls out the cast, the story, the original creature, and the practical effects.

If you haven’t seen The Fly II in a while, it’s time to check it out again. While you’re at it, make it a double feature with The Fly and throw in another listen to THE FLY (1986) — Episode 91 — Decades Of Horror 1980s. At the time of this writing, The Fly II is available to stream from HBOmax and as physical media on one of five Blu-ray discs included in Scream Factory’s The Fly Collection. Also included in The Fly Collection are The Fly (1958), Return of the Fly (1959), Curse of the Fly (1965), and The Fly (1986).

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Crystal, will be Krull (1983)! You asked for it!
