Doc Rotten is joined by Grue-Crew writers Joseph Perry and Joseph Fittos to discuss the latest updates, reviews and TV news from Gruesome Magazine in this special edition of Horror News Radio.

November is all about 8 Films to Die For. Doc and crew go over a few of the reviews of the films themselves (Unnatural, Windwalkers) while discussing the marketing and distributing concept of the "8 Films" themselves. A few other films get thrown in for good measure: Howl and Wrecker.

Joseph Perry explains Gruesome Magazine's SUPER SCARY SHORTS SATURDAY where the site reviews two new short horror films each weekend. Doc welcomes two new writers into the fold, Jeff Mohr and Franki "Boom Boom" Stein.

Joseph Fittos rounds out the episode, diving into all the horror on television programming. There is so much incredible genre content in the recent years. Three shows get the spotlight: Fear the Walking Dead, Scream Queens and The Walking Dead. Oh, and the Grue-Crew throw in some Ash vs the Evil Dead for good measure.

Nov 18, 2015

The Grue-crew venture off to Ireland to encounter the monsters hiding in the woods in Corin Hardy's creature feature The Hallow. Joseph Mawle and Bojana Novakovic star as a young couple who have recently moved into a remote Irish countryside only to trespass upon and encounter a gaggle of deadly creatures known as the Hallow. Cool stuff!

Thomas begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about the passing of horror icon Gunnar Hansen, the casting of Jeffery Dean Morgan in The Walking Dead and the announcement of a life size Alien egg from Neca. In the What Have You Been Watching segment The Black Saint returns from the New York City Horror Film Festival to share the weekend events, the films and the best of show winners.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don't forget - Stump the Saint! Review: The Hallow (2015)

This week's main review is geared for fans of creature feature films. The Hallow introduces a collection of horrifying beasts that live hidden deep in the Irish woods who only come out when their land is trespassed upon. If they do happen to venture out from the confines of their wooded canopies, beware! They mean you all kinds of harm. The Grue-crew recap and review this intriguing and unique horror feature.

What Have You Been Watching: New York City Horror Film Festival (2015)

The New York City Horror Film Festival screened this past weekend at Times Scares in the heart of New York City. Santo Ellin Jr., The Black Saint, is here to share his adventures at the festival - along with seeing fellow American Horror Story Fan Podcast co-host Christopher G. Moore and his film Knob Goblins. He talks about some of his favorites from the festival and announces the winners from the weekend.

Horror News of the Week for 11/16/2015

Thomas steps in for Dave to share the Horror News of the Week. This week starts off with the sad news of the passing of Leatherface himself, the iconic horror legend Gunnar Hansen, who brought the masked madman to life in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In TV news, Jeffery Dean Morgan is now cast as villainous and monstrous Negan on The Walking Dead. Neca is releasing a life size egg and face-hugger from Aliens and it looks amaze-balls.

Director Sam Mendes continues his exploration of the 007 cinematic universe with Spectre as James Bond is given a mission to take out the mysterious killer named Oberhauser. All the favorites are back, Moneypenny, Q and M while the criminal organization "Spectre" takes the forefront including Christoph Waltz and Dave Bautista as key - and familiar - villains. The film has incredible action sequences, Bond girls and plenty of martinis, shaken not stirred.

This is a special episode of Horror News Radio where we take a slight breather from full-on terror films to take a peek at the 007 films with the release of Daniel Craig's latest turn as James Bond in Spectre. It is a shorter than usual episode due to scheduling conflicts as we only review the film; however, it is the usual heated discussion that you will not want to miss. Horror fans return next week as the entire Grue-crew return with monsters, screams and gruesome gore!

Award winning director - and self-professed James Bond uber-fan - Christopher G. Moore joins his Hannibal Fan Podcast (and American Horror Story Fan Podcast) co-hosts Doc Rotten and Thomas Mariani to review the latest 007 flick, Spectre, on this special episode of Horror News Radio. Thomas explores the nature and strange origins of some of the key elements from the film - thing Thunderball and Never Say Never Again. Christopher goes into all the fan-service references to previous Bond films. Doc gets his panties in a wad defending the latest Bond girl. The review is full of divisive opinions as Doc, Thomas and Christopher spoil the crap out of the film.

After years of horror movie fans demanding that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell return to the Evil Dead franchise, fan-favorites characters and Deadites return - but this time to the small screen - with the coming of Ash vs the Evil Dead available for 10 weekly episodes on Starz. Can the demented duo recapture lightning in the bottle? What will Ash Williams be like 30 years after Army of Darkness? The Grue-crew are here to share their reviews of the pilot episode, "El Jefe."

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about Nightmare Cinema, Preachers and Halloween Costumes. In the What Have You Been Watching segment Doc Rotten & The Black Saint from the Grue-Crew review Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

Review: Ash vs the Evil Dead - Episode 1 "El Jefe" (2015)

It is rare that a film properly translates so marvelously to the small screen - although, of late, the odds are improving - as Ash vs the Evil Dead manages to accomplish. Sam Raimi returns to write and direct the first episode, El Jefe. In the pilot's 30 minute premiere, Raimi re-introduces Ash Williams, once again played by Bruce Campbell, as the protector of the Book of the Dead. Campbell slides back into the Ash role with relish and charm - only 30 years later. It is amaze-balls. The Grue-crew champion the show but worry slightly if the remaining nine episodes can keep up the pace and tone.

What Have You Been Watching: Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

In shocking news, the horror film Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse bombed at the box office with its Halloween release not even cracking the top 10 for the weekend. How does this happen? A lot of it has to do with the release program the distributor set up with a quick lead from theaters to VOD, leading to many theater chains not showing the film. The result is quite unfair to the film as both Doc and The Black Saint praise the film for its comedy and its charming - but insanely gory - coming of age story.

Horror News of the Week for 11/02/2015

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week starts off a lively discussion about what the hell is up with the poor cinematic showing for horror films this Halloween (2015). Thomas steps in with a recap of his visit to Halloween Horror Nights. The news begins with the Halloween costume make-up master Rick Baker created for his daughter. The Preacher trailer premiered on the fourth episode of The Walking Dead. Mick Garris finally reveals the five directors signed on for his upcoming horror anthology, Nightmare Cinema.

Oct 29, 2015

The found-footage October favorite Paranormal Activity returns to theaters this past weekend with Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, adding 3D to the mix to liven up the supernatural offerings. Seriously, this looks to be the perfect cinematic cocktail for HNR host Doc Rotten. But, something horrible happens, the unspeakable - the film sucks beyond belief. Thankfully for Jason Blum, however, Vixen - the voice of reason - remains vigilant for the film and the franchise.

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about The Walking Dead where the shocking supposed death of one the show's main cast dominates the news. In the What Have You Been Watching segment Doc Rotten & The Black Saint from the Grue-Crew review The Last Witch Hunter.

Review: Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015)

Adding 3D to the jump-scare-filled Paranormal Activity franchise does not offer enough oomph to elevate the film beyond mediocre. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is a disaster, proving the age-old Jaws-proven concept of "don't show your monster." The Ghost Dimension is stuck in the rinse cycle going over the same set up and payoffs seen in the previous films without adding enough "new" to make it worthwhile. Yes, Doc is crushed. Thomas is validated. And Dave is just pissed. Vixen, however, is okay with it. D'oh.

What Have You Been Watching: The Last Witch Hunter (2015)

The Black Saint, who did not see Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, joins Doc to discuss the latest Vin Diesel vehicle, The Last Witch Hunter from director Brent Eisner. Full of captivating visuals and intriguing ideas, the film is dragged into blandness with an overly complicated plot and a smattering of needless exposition and world building. Dull and lifeless, the film fails to impress Doc and the Saint.

Horror News of the Week for 10/26/2015

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week starts off with a lively, heated discussion about this week's The Walking Dead and the (questionable) fate of one of shows favorite characters. Did they? Didn't they? Are they jumping the shark? Have they created the greatest cliff-hanger in TV history? Man... Also, in the news, Dave shares information about Mick Garris bringing a promising anthology to theaters in 2016 titled Nightmare Cinema. The Grue-crew discuss the trailer for Nightmare Code. Thomas discusses the animated horror short La Noira. On the documentary front, Diabolique Magazine is behind a retrospective looking back at Hammer Horror: The Warner Bros Years.

Oct 22, 2015

Guillermo del Toro returns to theaters with his Gothic romance horror ghost story masterpiece Crimson Peak. Visually the film is flawless, exquisite, lush and majestic. The story leaves some of the Grue-crew wondering where all the ghosts are. It is a divisive week on HNR. We know there's something amiss when Vixen has to hide her eyes only once during the film.

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Walking Dead and Night of the Living Dead. One of these is not like the others. In the What Have You Been Watching segment the Grue-Crew review Goosebumps. Ermahgerd!

Review: Crimson Peak (2015)

Perhaps the most anticipated horror film of 2015, Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak is striking. The film aims for a very specific look and atmosphere achieving it with ease and confidence. The film struggles at the box office, sadly, because the marketing sold the movie as a full-fledged ghost movie. But, like Edith Cushing states early in the film, it's a story that has ghosts in it. The result is pure Guillermo del Toro, mixing classic structure with modern cinematography. This week the Grue-crew share their reviews of Crimson Peak.

What Have You Been Watching: Goosebumps (2015)

Jack Black leads the cast in Rob Letterman's Goosebumps that peels back the covers of the fan-favorite horror book series for young readers. All the classic monsters are here led by the notorious and chilling Slappy the Dummy. The main creatures include the Yeti, the Wolfman and a gaggle of angry yard Gnomes. The film is fast, fun and family friendly - a great introduction to young film goers to the world of horror cinema. The Grue-crew have a blast reviewing Goosebumps.

Horror News of the Week for 10/19/2015

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week starts off with the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Sean Cunningham, Kane Hodder and Tom Savini have all lent their names and input to various aspects of the upcoming Friday the 13th video game currently seeking financing through crowdfunding. On TV this week, Carol kicks major ass on this week's episode of The Walking Dead in what Thomas calls "The best episode of the series." Could this be? George Romero is planning on releasing another addition of the classic Night of the Living Dead except this one has recently re-discover LOST FOOTAGE. On New Discovery American, Ralph Sarchie is leading the monster-fighting charge on The Demon Files.

Welcome to a new Horror News Radio podcast, an extension of the regular weekly HNR show. Gruesome Spotlight will touch on some of the many other films we cover over at the new home for HNR, GRUESOME MAGAZINE. Each week, the HNR team and/or members of the Gruesome Magazine Grue-Crew will join Doc to talk about the films they reviewed over the past week.

HORROR NEWS RADIO - GRUESOME SPOTLIGHT
Episode 001 - Deathgasm - Suffer the Little Children - The Inhabitants

For the first episode of Gruesome Spotlight, Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, The Black Saint and Thomas Mariani hang out for a little extra HNR fun to discuss the Heavy Metal / Horror hybrid DEATHGASM. The New Zealand funny frightful flick from Jason Lei Howden is one of the best of 2015. Doc also discusses a few of the films reviewed over the past week, including the Stephen King short film SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN from  Corey & Haley Norman and THE INHABITANTS from Michael and Shawn Rasmussen. All is going well, then Doc admits that watched and liked the goofball monster flick featuring Michael Gross and Jamie Kennedy TREMORS 5: BLOODLINES. So, close.

Let us know what you think of this new idea. We want you to share if having a short supporting secondary podcast to spotlight other horror films beyond the weekly featured review on Horror News Radio a good idea. We also want to hear what kind of films you would like to have us cover on the Gruesome Spotlight podcast. Thanks for listening!

The surprisingly original and heart-felt horror satire The Final Girls hits VOD this week. It may be must-see movie magic from director Todd Strauss-Schulson.

Review: The Final Girls (2015)

The premise for The Final Girls has its young star Taissa Farmiga traveling into the horror film that stars her deceased mother, Malin Akerman. Taissa and her friends must survive the movie to escape and return to the real world. The film makes good on its meta themes and goes well beyond that promise along by making the internal conflict of its lead strong, heartfelt and emotional. In a rare turn, the entire Grue-crew agree, making The Final Girls a must-see winner of 2015.

What Have You Been Watching: The Walking Dead Season 6 (2015)

Rick, you crazy bastard. The beginning of Season 6 of the fan favorite zombie apocalypse TV monster, The Walking Dead, sets up a fascinating problem for Rick, Morgan, Darryl and friends to overcome. There's a hoard of hungry mother-effn zombies trapped in a gorge nearby that places their life in Alexandria at risk. Rick takes charge in the way only Rick can - with tons of conflict and carnage. Wowzers! Vixen steps in to take the lead sharing what she loves and dislikes about this promising season opener.

This Week on Gruesome Magazine: June (2015) & A Christmas Horror Story (2015)

Celebrating this week's awesome content at Gruesome Magazine, Doc Rotten and the Black Saint discuss a pair of films reviewed on the site recently. The first film is June from director L. Gustavo Cooper, featuring a story about a trouble young orphan with a mysterious, dangerous future. The second film is another horror anthology film called A Christmas Horror Story from a trio of directors: Grant Harvey, Steven Hoban and Brett Sullivan. This silly but gory holiday treat features a much-anticipated confrontation between Santa Claus and the monstrous Krampus.

 Review: Cooties (2015)

In a curious turn, the thoughts from the Grue-crew - and special guest-host Christopher G. Moore - about the new horror comedy Cooties are all across the board from loving it to absolutely hating it. Arguably more so than horror, comedy is extremely subjective with the Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion directed film appealing to Christopher who gives it a 4.0. On the other end lies Thomas Mariani, giving the film a 0.5. Insane. This is the review you want to listen to.

 Review: Bloodsucking Bastards (2015)

The familiar and friendly face to horror fans, Fran Kranz leads a cast of office slackers that face being over run by vampires in the horror comedy BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS. The film benefits from a witty script, a great cast and gallons of grue but still has trouble gelling as a whole film. The Grue-Crew review the film providing thoughts on what jokes works, what effects thrill and what actors provide the most to the uneven but enjoyable script.

What Have You Been Watching: Area 51 (2015)

Over five years in the making - or perhaps rotting on a Blumhouse shelf - the follow-up film from Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) called AREA 51 finally makes its way into the public's eye - currently available on Netflix. The found footage film follows a group of overly curious young men investigating what lies beneath the storage buildings found in the infamous Area 51. Will they find a conspiracy, aliens or a horror beyond imaging. The Black Saint wonders if they will find ... a film, any talent or any common sense. Doc, on the other hand ... well, the less said the better.

Review: Final Girl (2015)

Dave Dreher says it best during the podcast review, "Somewhere in this mess is a great story." Final Girl featuring Abigail Breslin, Wes Bentley, Alexander Ludwig and Logan Huffman attempts to build something uniquely interesting, but - to quote Dave once again - "fails miserably." The Grue-Crew hack and slash away at the film questioning the dialog, the lighting, the logic and - with all due apologies - Wes Bentley. Check out the review, we will give you a five minute head start.

What Have You Been Watching: Cub (2015)

Originally titled Welp, the Norwegian film dubbed Cub in the States follows the story of young Sam, a troubled cub scout on a camping trip with his troupe. Once at the camp ground, Sam discovers the legend of Kai may very well be true when he encounters a feral young boy hiding - and killing - in the woods. The Grue-Crew recommend the film for its imagination, ballsy attitude, creative traps and its young star, Maurice Luijten.

Review: Sinister 2 (2015)

While the first Sinister was a surprise his, the follow-up effort, SINISTER 2, from Ciaran Foy struggles to recapture the thrills and chills of the first film. For The Black Saint suffers another round of "Blumhouse strikes again" sharing a strong negative reaction to the film. Thomas, Doc and Vixen are a little more warm to the sequel. James Ransone and Shannyn Sossamon provide the film with strong performances while the first film's director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill craft a script that gives the film too much of a good thing watering down the mystery of the film's antagonist, Bughuul.

The companion series to the hit AMC series The Walking Dead drew the largest number of any premeire on cable television. Fear the Walking Dead successfully launches the pilot episode of the first season's six episode run but faces a divisive reaction from fans and critics. Review: Harbinger Down (2015)

HARBINGER DOWN represents a love for bringing practical effects to the big screen, a hands-on physical thing leaving CGI far behind. Effects artists Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alex Gillis, from StudioADI - Academy Award winners for Death Becomes Her and famous for their work on Starship Troopers and Alien films - craft a horror tale where an alien infects a ship trapped in icy waters. The film wears its influences out in the open from Alien to The Thing to The Blob and more. The cringe as they find the effects noteworthy but the script, direction and even the acting - aside from Lance Henriksen - lacking.

Review: The Gift (2015)

THE GIFT is a pleasant Summer surprise, a nifty little thriller from writer/director/co-star Joel Edgerton that challenges Se7en for the line "What's in the box?" Husband and wife Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall welcome awkward friend Edgerton into their home...and their lives. Once they decide, after a strange encounter in Edgerton's home, to part ways - an action that exposes his creepy disposition as something far more frightening. The Grue-crew champion the film and the acting chomps of Bateman, Hall and Edgerton.

What Have You Been Watching: Fantastic Four (2015)

While the Marvel cinematic universe has revolutionized the superhero genre, FOX continues to struggle to fully realize the FANTASTIC FOUR franchise. Director Josh Trank (Chronicle) steps in to harbinger the 2015 version featuring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell as Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, Sue Storm and Ben Grimm as they venture into another dimension to gain powers beyond their imagination. Somewhere along the line, however, everything falls apart resulting in one of the worst films of 2015, superheroes or otherwise. It is a real stinker!

Review: Dark Was the Night (2015)

Kevin Durand makes a huge impression on the Grue-crew with his starring role in DARK WAS THE NIGHT. The Black Saint praises the character driven plot and the actors that bring the film to life. Doc and Thomas are less impressed but praise Durand agreeing that they want to see more from this terrific actor. In Doc's opinion, the creature effect have him longing for the days of Pumpkinhead and the like - perhaps, he's a bit too curmudgeon.

What Have You Been Watching: Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)

Thomas steps in to discuss the top movie at the box this weekend, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. He discusses how the film holds up in comparison to other MI entries and praises the actress Rebecca Ferguson as a break-out star. In the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe theatrical hit, ANT-MAN, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) passes his technology and powers to the unlikeliest of heroes, sad-sack criminal Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) in what is essentially Marvel's heist comedy. The HNR grue-crew dive into the action to see if the latest offering is a minor success or a major flop.

Dave dishes a new plate of HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK with the news about the giant monster manga offering Attack on Titan, details about Paz De La Huerta's law suit against the makers of Nurse 3D and a preview of Blumhouse teaming with Soska Sisters to bring horror fans the Hellavator. Review: Ant-Man (2015)

After the giant, over-the-top access of Avengers: The Age of Ultron, Marvel slides back into phase 1 like mode to bring audiences ANT-MAN. The film has a long history as writer-director Edgar Wright championed long and hard to bring Hank Pym and Scott Lang to the big screen. With Peyton Reed taking over the chair as director at the last minute, the film finally makes its way into theaters this weekend. The film is more intimate and sweet than most Marvel films offering a character driven action comedy with heart. How does the HNR grue-crew respond? Ah, that's where the fun begins.

What Have You Been Watching: Creep (2014)

Arriving to Netflix streaming this week is the Patrick Brice/Mark Duplass found footage joint CREEP. The movie follows a film maker hired to chronicle the day in the life of a dying man only to discover the subject of his day's work is a bit off, a bit twisted, a true...creep. Things quickly escalate as more and more terrifying secrets are revealed. As the grue-crew (outside of Doc) continue to harden their declining opinion on found footage, does the latest Blumhouse offering stand a chance? Perhaps it does...

Horror News of the Week for 07/20/2015

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week with news of a popular manga inspired film series finally making its way across the seas as the grue-crew examine the trailer for Attack on Titan. Another trailer follows with the body horror sequel Contracted: Phase 2. In bizarre real-life news, actress Paz De La Huerta is suing the producers behind Nurse 3D for actions that she claims is ruining her career. Blumhouse makes the news again as they team with the Soska Twins to produce the GSN TV horror-themed game show Hellavator. SyFy never to be too far behind the pack announces their bringing the boy bands Backstreet Boys & NSYNC together for the horror film Dead 7. Ha!

Review: The Gallows (2015)

Despite looking forward to seeing THE GALLOWS and hoping to enjoy another found footage theatrical release, even Doc Rotten is appalled by what crawled up onto the big screen and took a giant dump. Ugh. Thomas proclaims The Gallows the worst film of 2015. The Black Saint even thinks it out-stinks Area 51. It is a sad day at HNR. You are going to want to hear this one.

The Grue-crew climb into the dreamlike world of Rodney Ascher's documentary about sleep paralysis, THE NIGHTMARE (2015). Paired with this are a series of reenactments that are, at times, as scary as any horror film.

Review: The Nightmare (2015)

The synopsis is simple, "A look at a frightening condition that plagues thousands; sleep paralysis." and so is the approach to tackling a fairly complicated subject matter. For THE NIGHTMARE, director Rodney Ascher sticks to sharing the experiences of a small gathering of poor souls who each suffer from sleep paralysis and horrifying nightmares. The Grue-crew chime in with their reactions to this unique and challenging genre documentary.
