Review: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

The final film in The Hobbit trilogy picks up directly where The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug left off with the dragon hammering down on Lake Town where Luke Evans takes down the beast. But his victory comes too late, and the townsfolk follow him to the foot of The Lonely Mountain where Thorin suffers from "dragon sickness" guarding his treasure. Before it all ends, there are orcs, goblins, a dwarf prince on a giant pig, elves, bats, mountain worms and - to The Black Saint's surprise and elation - large eagles dropping bears into the battle.

What Have You Been Watching: The Black Mirror Christmas Special

Thomas is thrilled to review the latest holiday special to the highly regarded UK "Twilight Zone" anthology series, The Black Mirror Christmas Special. Jon Hamm leads the cast in a show that explores the sinister side of technology in fascinating and inventive ways. Check it out with Thomas' highest recommendation.

Dec 17, 2014

It's time to discuss the worst horror films of the year, the most dreadful crap of 2014. The HNR grue-crew have no problems coming up  with 10 films each that failed to ignite the imagination, compassion, conflict or excitement that cinema has to offer. What films dropped the ball, meandered in their narrative or, worse, were simply dull to the bone? Let's take a look back at 2014 to call out some of the films that should have done better...

Dave returns to shares the horror news of the week with news about Stephen King's It, The Rock's San Andreas and Sony's rumored ideas behind Men in Black/22 Jump Street, Spider-Man and Ghostbusters.

Review: The Pyramid (2014)

Producer Alexandre Aja delivers dangerous mazes, flesh hungry Sphinx creature and Anubis in his latest film The Pyramid. While the film delivers a bevy of gory effects but fails to bring much scares or horror. While Doc and Vixen find enough to entertain them for the 89 minute run time, The Black Saint can't help but wonder why they remade As Above, So Below. Bwah hah hah.

What Have You Been Watching: Z Nation season finale

Dave and Doc freely admit they have been following Asylum's Z Nation airing on SyFy. Despite the low budget and cheesy approach to the show, Z Nation is consistently fun, in their opinion. The Black Saint, Thomas and Vixen refuse to believe them. So sad. Doc shares his thoughts on the finale of the first season of Z Nation.

Review: Starry Eyes (2014)

Writer/Directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer deliver their crowd funded, highly reviewed, low budget feature film Starry Eyes which examines a young woman's desire to become a star and the crazy lengths she will go to get what she wants. The intimate script mixes elements of Faust, body horror and slasher film tropes into an interesting but uneven film. Alex Essoe is captivating in the starring role.

Review: The Guest (2014)

HNR favorites Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett follow up their film, You're Next, with The Guest about a mysterious stranger who arrives at the home of a family dealing with the loss of the oldest son who died overseas serving his country. Dan Stevens stars as David who has shocking and horrifying secrets. The film is energetic, exciting and bloody. It may become a cult classic.

What Have You Been Watching: Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014)

Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint complain that the latest Katniss feature, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, is overly padded and dull. The Black Saint is particularly concerned that splitting the final book into two features is solely a money grab by the studios and may ultimately sour the franchise. Does Thomas agree?

Review: Jessabelle (2014)

The only thing that the grue-crew can agree upon in this week's horror release Jessabelle is that Sarah Snook makes an impression with the character driven horror film set in the deep south. The Black Saint suggests it is better suited for the Lifetime channel finding very little that is scary or interesting while Doc, Vixen and Dave all seem to like the film quite a bit. Sound the bell, it HNR-nite fights!

Review: Interstellar (2014)

Matthew McConaughy joins Anne Hathaway and Wes Bentley to explore deep space in hopes to save humanity in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. The Black Saint and Thomas Mariani discuss the film's sound design, spectacular special effects and emotional human drama. Even though it may not be Nolan's best film, Interstellar is still a film to seek out and enjoy.

What Have You Been Watching:  Over the Garden Wall

The Cartoon Network astounds Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint with its 10 episode animated min-series Over the Garden Wall. The vocal talent is extraordinary and the execution is surprisingly emotional and bent. Thomas and The Black Saint recommend the miniseries with The Black Saint suggesting it would make a terrific film with the 10 episode consumed in one showing.

Horror News of the Week for 11/10/2014

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead making the leap to cable television with Ash vs. the Evil Dead heading to Starz. The Walking Dead barely slipped by controversy as this week's episode was nearly heavily censored. Dario Argento is after funding for his next horror epic The Sandman.

Review: Horns (2014)

Daniel Radcliff continues to explore the horror and fantasy genre after his years as Harry Potter with Horns playing a man who is accused of killing his girlfriend, Juno Temple, finds that he grows a pair of horns and decides to solve the murder on his own facing his own demons and those of his friends and surrounding community. Director Alexandre Aja delivers his most emotional work yet and the HNR crew share their thoughts on the film, the direction and the power behind the script inspired by the book from Joe Hill.

Review: VHS: Viral (2014)

The popular found footage anthology franchise continues with VHS: Viral providing three new shorts and another wonky, confusing wrap around story. As with most anthology films, the movie is a good as its best short and as bad as its worst with VHS: Viral being the most uneven of the series yet, but still strong enough to have the HNR grue-crew looking forward to a fourth entry.

Horror News of the Week for 10/20/2014

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of Ryan Murphy inventing Comedy Horror - oh, my - with his latest, upcoming TV show Scream Queen to some groan from the grue-crew. The reaction is mixed about the announcement that George Romero is backing his son's (Cameron) directorial take on a prequel to Night of the Living Dead. Eli Roth is producing a remake of his film Cabin Fever - with the same script. More groans. MTV reveals that there will be no Ghostface in their Scream TV show. Groans continue. As much as we love Scream Factory, it saddens us greatly to discuss the recent screw ups, the one with Nightbreed in particular.

Film Review: Dracula Untold (2014)

Universal begins its attempt to wrangle its stable of "monsters" into a shared property, a share franchise, much like The Avengers, with the release of Dracula Untold. The grue-crew have been dreading this film for sometime, even jokingly labeling the film Dracula Unseen. Aside from Dave, who may have been literally offended by the film, the reviews are surprising positive but with reservations. Horror? No, not at all. Action film? Yeah, Doc and Thomas even suggest it is closer to a superhero film. Twists and turns, baby.

What Have You Been Watching: The Walking Dead Season 5

Terminus, oh, my. That story is continued in the season 5 premiere of The Walking Dead in surprising and exciting ways. With 17 million plus viewers, The Walking Dead kills its start this year with gore, action and powerful emotion. And a surprise or three. Yes, even Thomas was seduced into watching this episode.

What Have You Been Watching: Busan International Film Festival

Joseph Perry returns as the HNR man-on-the-street, or better yet man-abroad, as he provides the first report from the popular Busan International Film Festival. The films covered this week are Live TV from South Korea and Ghost Rituals from Malaysia.

Film Review: Extraterrestrial (2014)

Doc admits to being a fan of The Vicious Brothers, the directing team behind Grave Encounters. They are back with a sci-fi horror mash up with aliens and cabin in the woods blend of action, shocks, gore and humor. The film is called Extraterrestrial featuring the ever popular Michael Ironside in a cameo/supporting role. The film gets a seal of approval from The Black Saint.

Annabelle (2014)
Expanding the story behind the possessed doll introduced in the intro to The ConjuringAnnabelle tries hard to scare and entertain audiences across the globe. Gauging from the week end box office, the film seems to have struck a chord with horror and film fans. The blandest of bland main characters lumber along until a demon enters into the picture to spice things up. A few good, well orchestrated scenes a great horror film does not make. The grue-crew discuss the successes and failures found in Annabelle.

What Have You Been Watching: Gone Girl

Horror News of the Week for 10/06/2014
Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of the return of Twin Peaks from David Lynch coming to Showtime in 2016. The marketing behind ABC's of Death 2 are stirring up a stink with 26 NSFW pictures from the film, one for each segment. Director Adam Green return with another Happy Halloween short.

The Sacrament (2013) has its roots grounded firmly in the true story surrounding the Jonestown tragedy from 1978. The similarities have many of the HNR grue-crew scratching their heads wondering what the film's director Ti West is really up to. The discussion gets heated beginning with an explanation of what happened to covering The Guest.

The Sacrament (2013)
Ti West is a controversial film maker around the HNR offices. His entries in the anthology films The ABC's of Death and VHS are responsible for some of the rockiest reviews on the show. While his past films get some love, House of the Devil and The InnkeepersThe Sacrament does not earn many accolades. Even Vixen is hardened by the blatant similarities to Jonestown and the films based on that real life tragedy. Even though Gene Jones does a great job as The Father, the leader of the cult, the story itself never brings anything original to the film. Bah, humbug.

What Have You Been Watching: Mutantis
Doc Rotten and The Black Saint are here to share an experience that defies explanation, the film called Mutantis from Dire Wit Films. Low budget effects, sophomoric humor and a keen sense of self awareness, Mutantis is unlike any film you have ever seen.

Tusk (2014) is Kevin's Smith's second horror comedy with the script germinating from the SModcast podcast: episode 259 The Walrus and The Carpenter. Kevin Smith turns a dare on his popular podcast into a full length feature, Tusk. The film stars Justin Long, Michael Parks, Genesis Rodriguez and Haley Joel Osment where Parks' Howard Howe eyes Justin Long's Wallace Bryton for his horrifying experiments in turning a man into a walrus, a new Mr. Tusk. The reviews are mixed among the grue-crew, Santos loves the films while Vixen shares she was prepared to walk out of the theater. It's a lively conversation with a personal call to action for Kevin Smith from Thomas.

What Have You Been Watching: The Maze Runner
Yes, The Maze Runner is an adaptation of a Young Adult novel, but it is well done, thrilling and features creepy creature effects with the Grievers. Doc Rotten, The Black Saint and Thomas Mariani each saw the film over the weekend and recap the highlights of the film, including some crafty eyebrow acting. Woot!

Horror News of the Week for 09/22/2014

Camille Keaton returns for a sequel to I Spit On Your Grave. Hulu lands J.J. Abrams adaptation of Stephen King's 11/22/63. And Spirit stores spread Halloween cheer to children.

What Have You Been Watching: Z-Nation
Doc hears an earful from the grue-crew for insisting that they all watch the premiere episode of SyFy's Z-Nation. All but Doc and Dave tear into the show calling it disposable and terrible. Thomas does confess, however, his did enjoy the zombie baby. Citizen Z, however, not so much.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (2014) is Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's return to Marv, Dwight and Nancy. Life After Beth (2014) proves that a zombie romcom is a difficult proposition regardless of how fantastic the cast may be. Dane DeHaan, Aubrey Plaza,  John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon and Anna Kendrick cannot save this humorless, lifeless horror comedy from writer/director Jeff Baena. All the pieces are there, they just never assemble into a cohesive whole. Sad.

Afflicted (2013), on the other hand, proves how a well constructed story and a pair of leads with authentic bro-chemistry is capable of reinvigorating the found footage sub genre. Afflicted is the film no one knows about but everyone should. A terrific little film that has the grue-crew united in singing its praises. Check it out!

Life After Beth (2014)
Thomas sums it up best during the review, "this year's biggest disappointment." Life After Beth is ripe with promise: a great cast, a promising young director, an intriguing premise and a slick spin on horror, romance and comedy. It should be the zombie rom-com to define  a decade. Instead, the chemistry never gels, the zombies never reach their potential and, the biggest crime, the comedy is never funny. Sigh.

Afflicted (2013)
The HNR grue-crew wear their found footage scars as they have endured an onslaught of horror films trying to capture the fire ignited by Paranormal ActivityREC and CloverfieldAfflicted is one of the few films that get it right, a remarkable entry into the sub genre that spins a unique and often scary look at vampires and the horrors of the transformation from human to the undead. Derek Lee and Clif Prowse are pair of writers, directors and actors to keep an eye on. Recommended!

What Have You Been Watching: PiFan 2014 report from Joseph Perry
The Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival is a popular annual event in  South Korea. Joining us from the festival floor is HNR fan turned man-on-the-street reported, Joseph Perry discussing four more films: Nymph from Serbia; Asmodexia from Spain; Baal's Flowers from Italy; and, Whispers Behind the Wall from Germany.

Horror News of the Week for 08/18/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news across all mediums. On Television, NBC is bringing The Devil's Advocate to the small screen. In comics, DC Comics is exploring horror themes in the Batman universe with Gotham by Midnight. Elijah Woods carries the film segment with his latest cinematic effort, Open Windows. On Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing their second volume of Vincent Price classics: House on Haunted Hill, The Raven and Dr. Phibes Rises Again. Finally, on the you tube front, Max Landis has recreated the iconic transformation scene from his father's film American Werewolf in London with a tiny budget and a big imagination. Crazy!

Lucy (2014) embarks on a journey of the mind towing along tons of action and preposterous nonsense. The Purge: Anarchy (2014) picks up one year after the Purge presented last year except this entry follows Frank Grillo as Seargent Leo Barnes, a man on a mission to purge but runs into two sets of characters in deep doo doo deciding to help them survive the night. Capitalizing on the premise of The Purge, Anarchy takes the action to the streets to the satisfaction of the fans but forgets to bring characterization along with it. Hollow? Maybe. Action packed? You bet. Check out the review from the HNR grue-crew.

Dave ramps up the horror news of the week with bloody bits and pieces about GrizzlyThe Overlook Motel and Mad Max Fury Road. Joseph Perry is now the HNR man-on-the-street in South Korea at the PiFan film festival with his reviews of Dead Snow Red vs Dead, Blood Glacier and other genre films.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week!  The show also contains Stump the Stain as recorded live at MonsterCon toy and comic convention in Greenville, South Carolina July 18-20, 2014.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
Thomas reminds his co-hosts that all but Vixen hated on The Purge last year giving the film a screaming 1 out of 5 before the grue-crew jump into their review of the its 2014 sequel, The Purge: Anarchy. Dave perhaps says it the best, "For a film with 'Anarchy' in its title, where is all the Anarchy?" Frank Castle...uh...Frank Grillo, rather, takes to the streets on Purge Night handing out violence, gore and death, but does the action hold enough interest to elevate the film and the now successful franchise.

What Have You Been Watching: PiFan by Joseph Perry
