Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) is the best example of a sequel done right! It perfectly expands and extends the marvelous Rise of the Planet of the Apes and intelligently provides the audience with a remarkable blend of action, drama, conflict and spectacle. The grue-crew gather to discuss the film and push for recognition of Andy Sirkis' Oscar-worthy performance as Caesar.

Dave ramps up the news of the week with reaction to the teaser trailer for Horns and news of Suburban Gothic. Thomas shares his mixed review of The Strain in this week's What You Have Been Watching segment while Doc champions the show and Santos despises it. Oh, the drama!

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week!  Be on the lookout for the HNR crew at MonsterCon toy and comic convention in Greenville, South Carolina July 18-20, 2014.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Director Matt Reeves accomplishes with the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes what most other sequels never even approach, he makes a better film. Empires Strikes Back, The Godfather II, the list that includes these films is incredibly short. To no one's surprise, Doc, Dave, Santos, Thomas and Vixen all praise the film for its remarkable effects, it's incredible performance from Andy Sirkis and it's deceptively simple story that is thoroughly engrossing, compelling and fascinating. Check out this great discussion.

Horror News of the Week for 07/14/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news the first teaser trailer from Alex Aja's adaptation of Joe Hill's Horns. Then the grew-crew have issues with the changes to Robert Englund's "final" public appearance in Freddy make-up from A Nightmare on Elm Street. Speaking of Matt Reeves, Dave reveals his intentions to film The Invisible Woman. Director Richard Bates (Excision) is back in the news with the trailer for his upcoming film Suburban Gothic. The El Rey Network TV show, From Dusk Till Dawn, is getting its own haunted house treatment within this year's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios theme parks.

What Have You Been Watching: The Strain (FX - Season 1 - 7/13/2014)
Thomas chimes in with his opinions on the hit FX television adaptation of The Strain from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and showrunner Carlton Cuse. Thomas provides a mixed review harping on the weak character development but enjoying the more graphic horror elements. Santos pretty much poops on the whole show while Doc suggests everyone listen to he and Dave reviewing each episode on the Horror News TV The Strain Fan Podcast.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014) is the latest horror film from director Scott (Sinister) Derrickson about a cop (Eric Bana) who discovers a strange killer who may be possessed. Dave is ecstatic that the HNR crew is finally getting back to a full-fledged theatrical horror film; however, the box office results do not support that the audience was interested in seeing a blend of The Exorcist and Seven.

Dave ramps up the news of the week with The GuestABCs of Death 2 and Sharknado 2: The Second One while Santos continues with HNR's popular segment of the show, Stump the Saint, featuring horror trivia questions provided by you, the Horror News Radio listener! Thomas is on board to discuss the controversial film, Snowpiercer (2013).

Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
The discussion of Deliver Us From Evil begins on a solid notes with Santos giving it a 3 star review but it quickly runs afoul as the rest chime in less and less favorable experiences. The film from Scott Derrickson is supposedly based on true events where a cop and a priest perform an exorcism on a possessed criminal. The film is atmospheric and looks great but the script is uneven and the acting is a mixed bag with Eric Bana's New York accent amusing Santos and Thomas.

Horror News of the Week for 07/07/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news of  The Guest from Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett getting a September 2014 release date. Next up is disturbing news about The ABCs of Death 2 where the Soska Sisters (directors of one of the 26 chapters) released a graphic shot from the film which caused quite a stir on Facebook and other social media outlets. Dave shares the latest found footage trailer with Doc for the film The Expedition. And then follows it up with the trailer for the schlocky Sharnado 2: The Second One. Last up, Dave shares the alien cookie and other tasty genre treats from Christine McConnell, The Horror Baker.

What Have You Been Watching: Snowpiercer (2013)
Thomas steps up to discuss the much delayed film from director Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer. The hardest working man in podcasting champions the film siting its cinematography, direction and tone. Santos, however, who also saw the film, shares a different story. Gasp!

Witching and Bitching (2013)
This crazy film begins with a heist where the thieves are dressed as Jesus Christ, a green toy soldier and even Spongebob Squarepants, Insanity! The script follows two of them on the run with a 10 year old boy in tow. The plan is to escape Spain by traveling into France, but one town stands in the way: Zugarramurdi. This town is, of course, populated solely by witches, and this coven has their eyes set on the our lively groups of crooks. Doc, Thomas and Santos highly recommend the film.

The Human Race (2013) from director Paul Hough spins a combination of Battle Royale and Saw on its ears creating a terrifying tale that has Santos Ellin Jr. and Vixen singing its praises while Doc and Thomas are far less impressed. Kudos to Eddie McGee for portraying a complex heroic character. "Run or Die!"

Doc steps in for Dave this week to bring the news of the week with Robert Englund (returning as Freddy Kruger for one night only) , Paranormal Activity 5 and Z Nation while Thomas revisits season four of  Game of Thrones in this week's What  Have  You Been Watching segment. Subscribe – iTunes – Facebook Group

The Human Race (2014)
"If you are lapped twice, you die. If you step off the path, you die. If you touch the grass, you will die!" The tag line sets up the story at its base, 80 strangers from a single city block are transported to a mysterious track where they must keep running to survive. The Human Race thrills Santos and Vixen with its gory thrills (exploding heads!) and interesting characters while Thomas is frustrated by the script, the redundant kills and the overplayed soundtrack. The HNR grue-crew go at, love it or hate it, the discussion is lively.

Horror News of the Week for 06/23/2014
Dave Dreher may be out this week but Doc steps in to  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news of  Robert Englund appearing in full Freddy Kruger make-up for one weekend only for the Flashback Weekend this fall (Oct 2014). Silent Night, Deadly Night gets a 30th anniversary BluRay from Anchor Bay this September. The director behind the upcoming Dr. Strange from Marvel, Scott Derrickson, is set to direct a feature length version of Outer Limits. Doc is devastated the Paranormal Activity 5 is being pushed back to 2016 but is thrilled that the upcoming Friday the 13th film will be in 3D. The grue-crew take another look at the Z Nation TV show from SyFy and Asylum.

What Have You Been Watching: Game of Thrones & True Blood
Thomas is all about season 4 of Game of Thrones as he and Doc revisit the highlights of the year. Doc is all about "The Mountain and the Viper" as Santos watches the scene in the background for the very first time. OMG! Oh, the bloody gore of it all. While Game of Thrones gets high praises, the season 7 premiere of True Blood gets a far less enthusiastic review from Doc.

Stump the Saint for 06/23/2014
Santos faces three horror movie trivia questions from the Horror News Radio listeners again this week in the Stump the Saint segment. Mick St. John, Jason Hawkins and Joseph Perry supplies this week's challenging trivia with nods towards Scooby Doo, Ruth Gordon and a mysterious Satan film from the late 70's/early 80's.

Willow Creek (2013)
Bobcat Goldthwait. Bigfoot. Found Footage. It's a recipe for the bizarre from a unique visionary tackling his first horror film with Willow Creek. The film follows the trails blazed by Blair Witch Project to capture your breath in a brilliant extended scene where the lead characters are trapped in their tent as the sounds of terror surround them. Terrifying film.

What the heck happened? A great idea and a great cast squandered for a mediocre horror film - although The Quiet Ones is a tight, entertaining little thriller. The scares are forced and few and far between but the acting is terrific with Jared Harris and Olivia Cooke getting most of the recognition. But what happened to the scares? Listen to the grue-crew investigate during the podcast to find out.

Horror News of the Week for 04/28/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with his favorite horror icon making it to serial television, Jason Voorhees with a Friday the 13th show. The trailer for As Above, So Below may have been the scariest thing about The Quiet Ones - d'oh.  Kevin Smith returns to horror with his Tusk cast in tow to create Anti-Claus, as holiday horror anthology. Maybe. Santos nearly throws up with the disclaimer that Universal's Dracula Untold described as a "family fantasy film." Oh, dear. Showtime is presenting the first episode of their horror show Penny Dreadful a full month ahead of its premiere date.

What Have You Been Watching: Camp Dread
Danielle Harris and Eric Roberts lead the cast for Harrison Smith's slasher film, Camp Dread. Doc steps in with this week's What Have You Been Watching segment to review the film trying to convince Santos he needs to give it a try if not for Roberts deliriously campy delivery then for the twist ending.

The review heats up as the two sides discuss the film's successes and failures. An irritated Santos wants nothing to do with it; however, Dave shares he and his wife enjoyed the film greatly - his wife, who rarely likes horror films, wants to see it again. The film is creepy, full of atmosphere with terrific performances from its cast providing the film with a captivating set up but a divisive conclusion. In Fear (2014) from director Jeremy Lovering spins a tense little yarn about trust, fear and claustrophobia. The film is gaining positive reviews across the globe with its tight, unique approach to film. Now it is time for the Horror News Radio grue-crew to recap, review and examine the horror thriller.

Thomas Mariani returns to Horror News Radio to provide this week's Top 5 discussing five of the genre most claustrophobic horror films.

00:03:55 – What Have You Been Watching: SXSW (2014)
Thomas Mariani invades Texas! Every year music and film fans descend upon Austin, Texas for the South By Southwest Music Film Interactive Festival and Horror News Radio is represented this year by one of its own in the form of its youngest co-host. 00:14:55 – In Fear (2014)
This week the grue-crew take a look at the time film in the Anchor Bay Blu-Ray Prize Pack, In Fear. Jeremy Lovering directs the highly praised horror thriller starring Iain De Caestecker (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures) and Allen Leech (Downton Abbey). But, the well-intention-ed positive reviews, even from HorrorNews.Net itself, do not phase the HNR hosts' reaction to the film. While the concept of the film and Lovering's direction impress, the film meanders too far for too long to excite the crew. But, participate in the Prize Pack below for the opportunity to see the film for  yourself.

00:41:40 – Top 5 Claustrophobic Horror Movies
Thomas Mariani leaps of the claustrophobic elements of In Fear to examine 5 horror films that excel in exploring the terror of small places and being trapped in enclosed places. Thomas looks to Santos and Doc to elaborate on his Top 5 Claustrophobic Horror Movie list.

300: Rise of the Empire (2014) is hacking and slashing its gory way through the competition at the box office this weekend. The film is spectacular in its graphics, style and star Eva Green. While the grue-crew is not in 100 percent agreement, the conversation gets into the crazed violent, abundance of bloodshed and one specific line of dialog - which cannot be repeated here. If you have seen the film, you know the one!

Santos Ellin Jr. steps in for Thomas, who is off to SXSW, to provide this week's Top 5 discussing five of his favorite horror movie quotes. The man has a thing for colorful language, so the list is entertaining as ...well, you know. Dave, as always, has the Horror News of the Week and does not disappoint!

00:03:50 – 300: Rise of the Empire
While the film is all about the beefy men behind Greece and the 300, it is Eva Green as Artemisia that wins all the praise and love from the HNR crew. She is spectacular and the best thing in 300: Rise of the Empire. Santos is also all about the over-the-top bloodshed and action the film offers while Dave is impressed with the 3D. Doc, however, has issues but admits it may be more about the screening experience than that actual film. You need to listen to understand that debacle. The grue-crew review the film in all its 3D gory mayhem.

00:40:30 – Top 5 Horror Quotes
The Black Saint steps in for Thomas to bring his Top 5 for the week jumping on the crew's favorite line from the film bringing his Top 5 horror movie quotes. Santos relishes the opportunity to re-enact each and every quote and then puts Doc and Dave on the spot to drop their favorite as well.

  1. Dead Alive (1992) - "I kick ass for the Lord!"
  2. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) - "You gotta be f@%king kidding..."
  3. They Live  (1988) - "I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I am all out of bubble gum."
  4. Child's Play 3  (1991) - "Don't f@%k with the Chuck!"
  5. Phantasm  (1979) - "BOY!"

00:46:17 - Horror News of the Week for 03/10/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with the teaser trailer for Fear Clinic from director Robert Hall. Sticking with trailers, up next is the red band delight that is Stage Fright from director Jerome Sable featuring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. The action-packed TV spot and kick ass stills for The Raid 2 excite the crew. It looks like a 4K transfer of the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is on its way to theaters this fall. And, last but not least, Mondo has release a spectacular exclusive poster to promote this summer's Godzilla.

Patrick: Evil Awakens (2014) is a modern retelling of the 1979 Aussie hit, Patrick. In the remake, Sharni Vinson steps into the lead role as the nurse taking care of the titular character who lies in a coma at a private psychiatric hospital. If you have seen the original, you know that Patrick holds a deadly, terrifying secret. The grue-crew get the opportunity to view and recap the film on this episode of Horror News Radio.

Santos Ellin Jr. steps in for Thomas, who is off to SXSW, to provide this week's Top 5 discussing five obscure films that deserve a remake. Dave is back again with the Horror News of the Week discussing the Godzilla trailer, the next Terminator film and more information about the possible remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.

00:06:00 – Patrick: Evil Awakens
The HNR grue-crew often share their love for actress Sharni Vinson who impressed in You're Next. She is back with Patrick: Evil Awakens, a remake of the Richard Franklin film from 1979. Going into the film, the crew is a little nervous of what they will find wondering if Patrick is a good choice to be remade. Thankfully, the response is unanimous, each host giving the film high marks enjoying the modern take, gorier, more frightening and with a great cast. Dave even compares the direction to Brian de Palma. What? Yes, he did.

00:34:34 - Horror News of the Week for 02/24/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with the announcement that Vincent D'Onofrio has joined the cast for Jurassic World. With all the remake talk is it really that surprising that word of the remake of The Birds is resurfacing. Terminator: Genesis news is up next where the creative team behind the script are saying it resembles Back to the Future 2. What? The Godzilla trailer is just too damn good to not bring up this week. Roar, baby, roar! And, of course, everything is better with a little Bacon and Dave shares the commercial Kevin Bacon stars in where he reprises many of his famous roles including Friday the 13th (1980). Wow! Finally, Bacon owns up. Yay!

Knights of Badassdom (2014) from director Joe Lynch is a film with a troubled past, surviving struggles and hardships on its journey to VOD and DVD release. The film remains in the minds of fan anticipating its release. The HNR grue-crew tackle the film to see if the wait was worth it, to see if it lives up to the hype and the suspense.

Thomas continues the theme with the Top Horror Comedies of the week talking about Gremlins, a comedic Leatherface and the always brilliant Tom Atkins. Doc steps in to discuss the premiere showing of a low budget independent feature from North Carolina director Brett Mullen called Bombshell Bloodbath. 1. House  (1986)
  2. Gremlins (1984)
  3. Night of the Creeps  (1986)
  4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2  (1986)
  5. The Frighteners  (1996)

00:50:25 - What Have You Been Watching - Bombshell Bloodbath
Doc is thrilled to share his experience at the Greensboro, North Carolina premiere of Brett Mullen's Bombshell Bloodbath, a promising independent film. The film has a heavy Italian cinema influence from the story structure to the cinematography to the music from Umberto. The film is full of zombie gore and zany antics and Doc sings high praises for the film and the director.

01:00:25 - Horror News of the Week for 02/24/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with sad news relating the death of comic legend Harold Ramis, most famously known as Dr. Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters (1984). The gang shares their fond memories of seeing his many films over the years. Dave can barely contain Doc's excitement as Thomas begins to talk about the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer from Marvel Entertainment and James (Slither) Gunn. Not to be one-and-done, Dave follows this up with news about Godzilla, the full shot is finally out there, the roar is now fully realized and the trailer is coming (it's here!). Bates Motel on A&E is getting its own "after-show" much like The Talking Dead. Dave is thoroughly creeped out by the icky, spider-y chills in the poster released for Utero. Yuck!

Robocop (2014) revisits the territory blazed by Paul Verhoeven in the 1987 original film, except watered down for a PG-13 audience. To be fair, the remake is geared more as a straight-laced action flick with heavy sci-fi overtones and one singularly frightening scene of extraordinary body-horror. What will the grue-crew think?

Thomas continues the theme with the Top 5 of the Week bringing his Top 5 Under Appreciated Remakes featuring films like Little Shop of HorrorsDawn of the Dead and 12 Monkeys. Wait. What? Yup, it's a remake.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani also tackle the "What You Have Been Watching" segment for this week discussing the hit HBO show, True Detective. Dave closes the show with the Horror News of the Week with updates on Penny DreadfulThe Purge: Anarchy and Beetlejuice 2

00:02:22 – Robocop
Jose Padilha directs the modernization of the campy classic with his film, Robocop (2014). The film shifts its focus away from the camp and the satire to bring a drama heavy action flick with varying success. Vixen, sharing her passion for robot films, sings high praises for the film, opinions shared by Doc. However, Thomas is less than impressed while still finding many elements to enjoy. Dave rides in the middle for what Thomas proclaims to be a very middling film. Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton dominate most of the conversation while the comparisons to the original 1987 film are unavoidable.

00:41:25 – Top 5 Under Appreciated Remakes
Thomas takes a look a the history of remakes scouring for a collection of re-imagined films that succeeded but were never given enough respect with his Top 5 Under Appreciated Remakes.

  1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers  (1978)
  2. Little Shop of Horrors  (1986)
  3. The Blob (1988)
  4. Twelve Monkeys  (1995)
  5. Dawn of the Dead  (2004)

01:00:05 - What Have You Been Watching - HBO's True Detective
Thomas and Dave share how incredible HBO's True Detective has become over the past five weeks. Much of the success of the show rides on the shoulders of its two stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, along with its ground breaking multiple time line structure. Highly recommended television.

01:11:05 - Horror News of the Week for 02/10/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with rumors of renewed discussions between Michael Keaton and Tim Burton about returning to Beetlejuice 2. Horror on TV is huge this spring with Dave spotlighting the new Hannibal and Penny Dreadful trailers. Just for Santos, Dave shares news that Jessica Alba has signed to star in a found footage film called The Veil. Chiller TV is releasing a documentary from the team behind Cropsy called Killer Legends. And the trailer for The Purge: Anarchy has the grue-crew curious about the upcoming sequel.

Nurse 3D is a campy, trashy but oddly entertaining new release from director Douglas Aarniokoski starring Paz de la Huerta as Abigail Russel a psychotic, murderous nurse with a passion for blood and mayhem. The HNR grue-crew review the gory, R-Rated slasher-fest.

Thomas continues the theme with the Top 5 of the Week bringing his Top 5 Homicidal Women in Horror featuring films like Fatal AttractionThe Devil's Rejects and the underrated, under-appreciated Orphan.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani also tackle the "What You Have Been Watching" segment for this week discussing the hit animated film, The Lego Movie. Dave closes the show with the Horror News of the Week with updates on The Walking DeadBates Motel and Zombeavers. Wait. What? Zombeavers? Oh, yeah!

00:02:22 – Nurse 3D
Can the HNR crew really take Nurse 3D seriously? Is it the Showgirls of horror? High camp or pure garbage? The grew crew are here to answers those questions and much, much more. Bwah-hah-hah. Nurse 3D is a goofy, satirical horror slasher film with an outrageous (and somewhat frustrating) lead performance from its uber-hot star, Paz de la Huerta.

00:28:42 – Top 5 Homicidal Women in Horror
What better way to celebrate the insanity in Nurse 3D than to revisit some of the most notoriously unstable women in cinema with Thomas Mariani's Top 5 Homicidal Women in Horror.

  1. Ophan (2009) - Ester (Isabelle Fuhrman)
  2. Fatal Attraction (1987) - Alex Forrest (Glenn Glose)
  3. House of 1,000 Corpses / The Devil's Rejects (2003/2005) - Baby Firefly (Sherri Moon Zombie)
  4. Single White Female (1992) - Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh)
  5. Friday the 13th (1999) - Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer)

00:39:35 - What Have You Been Watching - The Lego Movie
Thomas, Santos and Doc love The Lego Movie far too much to let its release go totally unnoticed. The HNR gang share their thoughts of and appreciation for this delightful, imaginative film.

00:49:01 - Horror News of the Week for 02/10/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with the return of AMC's The Walking Dead. The whole gang chimes in on what they thought of the hit zombie TV's shows first show of its second half of season 4. IFC Midnight is releasing a found footage film called The Den. The trailer has caught Dave's imagination. Stephen King shows up a lot in HNR News and this week it is all about The Cell. Horror is terrorizing TV across the dials, Dave spotlights the full trailer for season 2 of Bates Motel. Then Doc cannot believe his ears, there is a movie called Zombeavers? Woot!

Big Bad Wolves  clobbers the cast of HNR this week leaving them shocked at what they’ve seen. The Israeli film, which topped Quentin Tarantino’s top of 2013 list, is an impressive psychological thriller containing gruesome effects and violence and intense dialog. The film should not be missed.

Thomas continues the theme with the Top 5 of the Week bringing an eclectic group of films comprising the Top 5 Unconventional Revenge Films. He casts asides classics like Deathwish, Kill Bill and I Spit on Your Grave for obscure but incredible films like The Skin I Live In and Takashi Miike’s Audition. Oh,  my, you know this is going to be good!

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher,  Thomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, return with heavy hearts to tackle Dave’s horror news of the week as Hollywood looses a great, a master and “The Extreme.”

00:02:22 – Big Bad Wolves
From Israel comes a vicious little film called Big Bad Wolves that is a real attention getter, for certain. “Bring me the blow torch!” Chills, baby, chills. This film is heavy on the Quentin Tarantino influence which caught the director’s notice prompting him to place the film on his top 10 films of 2013 list. Santos worries that Mr. Tarantino may be blowing smoke in our faces; he is thankful that QT is not and loves the film! In fact so do Thomas, Doc and Vixen. Intense, gruesome and surprisingly funny, Big Bad Wolves is a big hit with the grue-crew.

00:25:53 – Top 5: Unconventional Revenge Films
Thomas bring with him an incredible list of films this week banking off the revenge angle found in tonight’s main feature, Big Bad Wolves. He not only takes a look at revenge flick from the past few decades, but he also singles out the most Unconventional Revenge Films from the list. The list includes a film from the Japanese maverick, Takshi Miike, the humbling Audition. It also contains an early film from The Dark Knight and Inception director, Christopher Nolan, the mind altering Memento. Santos slides in one of his favorites from the Eighties, Ms. 45 and Doc questions if The Crow should be included. But it is Thomas’ favorite, The Skin I Live In, that has everyone talking.

  1. The Skin I Live In (2011) – Dir: Pedro Almodovar
  2. Ms. 45 (1981) - Dir: Abel Ferrara
  3. Memento (2000) - Dir: Christopher Nolan
  4. The Crow (1994) - Dir: Alex Proyas
  5. Audition (1999) - Dir: Takashi Miike

00:48:01 - Horror News of the Week for 02/03/2014
Dave Dreher wraps up the show with another titillating round of Horror News of the Week. Sadly, the news starts off with the shocking news of the sudden death of acclaimed actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It is an incredibly sad loss which has the HNR crew fondly remember many of the actors past accomplishments in film. Peyton Manning and the Browns continue to put Doc in stitches while Dave shares all the horror icons that appeared in the Radio Shack super bowl commercial. David S. Goyer is returning to horror with the cinematic adaptation of The Breach. In remake news, a modern revision of the Aussie hit, Patrick, is finally coming to the States. And, last but not least, the El Ray network have released a trailer and promotional materials for their TV show, From Dusk Till Dawn, that have definitely caught David’s eye. Woot!

I, Frankenstein  tanked at the box office this weekend, but that does not stop the grue-crew from recapping and reviewing the overblown, dull adaptation of the graphic novel presented as if it were an extension of the Underworld films. Aaron Eckhart is cast as the Frankenstein Monster in the film directed by Stuart Beattie. Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, rally together having survived the droll I, Frankenstein as they slam the film.

Thomas introduces a new segment to show this week with his Top 5 of the Week. For episode 43, he brings the grue-crew’s favorite Frankenstein Monsters: the top 5 Frankenstein films to watch instead of I, Frankenstein. Hell, yeah – of course, Boris Karloff is on the list, but the others will likely surprise you!

Santos finally convinces the crew to watch Found, a film he has been championing since judging the New York Horror Film Festival in November. To his great pleasure, Dave shares his love for this film; Thomas and Doc, however, share their reservations.

00:04:15 – I, Frankenstein
Based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux (who also stars in the film), Stuear Beattie’s directorial effort,I, Frankenstein struggles to impress the grew-crew winning only the faintest praise from Doc and Vixen, “I didn’t hate it.” The film mixes the Frankenstein Monster with Demons and Gargoyles in the style of the Underworld movies. It has all this including Miranda Otto and Bill Nighy as opposing heads of supernatural clans, yet the film fails to elicite all that much excitement. Yet, Santos admits the film looks great and he has a little crush on Yvonne Strahovski.

00:25:30 – Top 5: Frankenstein Monsters
This week brings a new segment to the show, a Top 5 of the Week. Thomas champions the top 5 Frankenstein Monsters to watch instead of I, Frankenstein. Drawn the from decades of horror and the collective, diverse favorites from the HNR grue-crew, Thomas starts off with the classic, iconic Boris Karloff but quickly dives into fondly remembered and surprisingly obscure collection of Frankenstein Monsters in horror cinema.

  1. Boris Karloff – Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939)
  2. Peter Boyle – Young Frankenstein (1973)
  3. Tom Noonan – Monster Squad (1987)
  4. Clancy Brown – The Bride (1985)
  5. Koji Furuhata – Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965)

00:34:50 What Have You Been Watching: Found
Santos is finally able to share the independent shocker, Found, with the HNR crew this week, quickly converting Dave into a follower. The film is a shocking tale of a young boy who discovers his brother may be a serial killer. The film gets bizarre quick in an intense and sometimes perverse character study. Doc and Thomas are impressed but not a high on the final product. Regardless of the opinion, the film is hard to forget, visceral and entirely engaging.

00:50:10 - Horror News of the Week for 01/27/2014
Dave Dreher wraps up the show with another fascinating round of Horror News of the Week. Dead Snow: Dead vs Red makes another appearance on the show with the release of its first full trailer, terrific reviews from Sundance Film Festival and a distribution deal is signed. Gory goodness! Dave hands the floor over to Thomas to discuss the new trailer from the latest Terry Gilliam film, Zero Theorem as the grue-crew try to figure out what the heck it is all about. Scream Factory is in the news again with its upcoming release of Dog SoldiersAmerican Horror Story: Coven ends this week with Dave inviting theories and thoughts from the HNR crew. As you know, Doc loves 3D and Doc loves found footage; Dave makes his day with the news of a new film titled Found Footage 3D.
