Episode 17 – The Wolverine
Wolverine has been featured in three X-men films (X-Men, X2, X-Men: Last Stand), starred in a solo feature (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and made an impressive cameo in X-Men: First Class. He is also set to appear in the next X-film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, due out Summer 2014. (How many times can Doc write X-Men? Woot!) Combined with The Wolverine, that makes an impressive 7 appearances as everyone’s favorite Canadian adamantium-laced mutant. Dialing back the over-the-top action (at least until the third act), The Wolverine concentrates on the character. It deals with the man coming to terms with his own immortality and his taking the life of the woman he loves, Jean Grey. From there, Logan ends up in Japan based on a popular 1980′s comic book mini-series written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Frank Miller. How does the adaptation compare? How does Jackman do returning to the role yet again? Is Muriko his one true love? All that and bloody claws on this episode of the Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast.
Mike Joy, HorrorNews.Net site manager, chimes in this week with a special interview talking about his upcoming film, DEAD afterlife. Mike shares his insight on the beginnings of developing a script for a horror film, how individuals get attached to the film (director, actors, distributors) and the challenges of financing a low budget film. The film is set to star Bill Oberst, Jr., Michael Berryman, Bill Moseley, Kane Hodder and Austin Idol. The interview gives you a rare peak behind the curtain with the film as it is just being developed. Big things in store for Mike Joy and HorrorNews.Net.

The Conjuring scares up boffo-box this weekend, smashing records and trouncing the competition. Co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Thomas Mariani and Vixen recap and discuss the film, the cast and the director, James Wan. #ScaryAsHell Indeed! Dave steps in to bring the horror news of the week and Doc announces another contest.

Episode 16 – The Conjuring
Ed and Lorraine Warren are the original ghost hunters seen as the experts in paranormal activity back to the 60′s and 70′s. James Wan’s The Conjuring shares one of their most frightening tales, untold for over fourty years. The result is one of the scariest films of this decade. The grue-crew dissect and discuss the film in length with a spoiler-filled review (but they don’t give everything away, no sir). Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are wonderful as the Warrens and Lili Taylor is extraordinary as the matriarch of a family haunted by restless spirits and unexplained demonic forces. Scary as hell only begins to describe The Conjuring.
Dave steps in to calm their nerves with the horror news of the week. First up is the Emmy Nominations including a best actress nod to Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates in Bates Motel. But the big announcement is the 17 nominations for American Horror Story: Asylum. Insane! Next up is the announcement of Anchor Bay Entertainment and Trancas International Blu-ray release of the 35th anniversary of John Carpenter’s Halloween. Amazing! NBC sneaks in with another trailer for the October 25th premiere of their Dracula TV series starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the fanged count. The trailer is full of blood, violence and late 19th century costumes. Exciting! In YouTube land, Dave shares a information about a video that compares Oz, the Great and Powerful with Army of Darkness, frame by frame, beat by beat. Uncanny! Last is news of all about SyFy’s Sharknado - more showing of the original while the sequel takes the sharks to Manhatten. Incredible!

Pacific Rim is the topic this week as co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Thomas Mariani and Vixen climb aboard Gipsy Danger, Crimson Typhoon and Striker Eureka to battle cinema's most dangerous Kaiju: Onibaba, Knifehead, Leatherback, Otachi, Scunner, Raiju, Sydney and Slattern. It's giant monsters battling giant robots, baby, in 3D IMAX on the big screen. Wahoo! But, do all of the grue-crew agree? Tempers rise, opinions sail and someone mentions Grown Ups 2. WTF? Dave steps in to save the day with the horror news of the week and Doc shares a handful of listener feedback.
The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast
Episode 15 – Pacific Rim
Pacific Rim is a homage to Godzilla, Ultraman and Transformers among many other Sci-fi, giant monster-giant robot films. Still, somehow, Dave finds a way to compare it to Starship Troopers. Pacific Rim is large, loud and entertaining as hell, but still the grue-crew is divided on how successful the film is. It's Dave and Santos in one corner and Vixen and Thomas in the other with Doc caught in the middle. Still, the film is a blast and SHOULD NOT BE MISSED, especially in IMAX 3D.
David drops the horror news knowledge on us this week beginning with the social network phenomenon that is Sharknado. The little crappy film that could. Santos sings its praises as one of the best worst films ever. Next up is news about the director and cast additions to DEAD afterlife from HorrorNews.Net's own Mike Joy. Jared Cohn is signed to direct (Bikini Spring Break, Hold Your Breath, 12/12/12) and the cast now includes Michael Berryman, Bill Oberst Jr., Bill Moseley, Kane Hodder and Austin Idol. Dave jumps into a trio of horror TV news with True Blood renewed for season 7, The Following keeps a key member on its cast despite their obvious death scene, and Siberia is scaring up some fans across the 'net. Then the grue-crew discuss the poor box office for Pacific Rim and all the cool early news coming out of the SDCC for 2013.
To the grue-crew's delight, the listeners of the Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast have shared their thoughts. Luis Angel Rodriguez from Texas and Joan Sherwood from Facebook both write in to share how much they enjoy the show. Wow! Thanks, guys. Jen and Sylvia Soska respond to episode 13 covering their film, American Mary, reaching out to Santos and praising Vixen's female perspective. Rock on! And, finally, T.J. Fowler is back with another entertaining voice mail from Finland all about V/H/S/2. Keep it up!

American Horror Story: Asylum star Naomi Grossman (Pepper) and The Collection star Josh Stewart spend some time with Doc Rotten. It is interview week as co-hosts Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Thomas Mariani and Vixen take a breather preparing for Pacific Rim and The Conjuring over the next few weeks. Doc Rotten provides two interviews for episode 14 gathered at the Blood at the Beach horror convention this past spring in Virginia Beach, VA. Pay close attention and you may hear a little from Vixen in there as well.
The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast
Episode 14 - Interviews with Naomi Grossman and Josh Stewart
Naomi Grossman's popularity burst upon the scene with her first appearance in the premiere episode of American Horror Story: Asylum as the microcephalia inflicted inmate, Pepper. Her character is so popular that Pepper has become a bit of a cultural phenomenon with her face being tattooed onto people's body parts (check out the podcast for details!) and posters created suggesting Pepper for President. Much of Pepper's appeal comes directly from the performance of the actor hidden beneath the make-up: Naomi Grossman. Her attention to detail, expressive features and comedic timing add up to one of the most surprising and entertaining highlights found within the popular TV show.
Josh Stewart is the star of both The Collector and its sequel, The Collection, playing petty crook turned hero, Arkin O'Brien. Josh's career also includes roles in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button from David Fincher and The Dark Knight Rises from Christopher Nolan. But it is in the two Collector films from director Marcus Dunstan where the talented actor has had his most prominent exposure to horror fans. In the podcast, Josh shares his experiences preparing for the physical demands of facing the film's antagonist, taking hard knocks and getting a little too close to a room full of fire.
Check back with the grue-crew in the coming weeks as we tackle this Summer's biggest, most anticipated genre treats: Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, James Wan's The Conjuring and James Margold's The Wolverine. We also have some guests lined up including the writer of the upcoming HorrorNews.Net horror film, DeadAlive. American Mary, from directors Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska (Twisted Twins), is the topic this week as co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Thomas Mariani and Vixen discuss the independent feature. Dave steps in to illuminate the podcast with this week’s horror movie news. We have a winner of the Stoker BluRay contest and much, much more.

Episode 13 – American Mary
Katharine Isabelle stars as Mary Mason in American Mary from the dynamic, talented team behind Dead Hooker in a Trunk, Jen and Sylvia Soska. After sharing praises for the film with the grue-crew and providing HorrorNews.Net with a great interview with the Twisted Twins (read the interview here and part 2 here), Santos easily convinced everyone to tackle American Mary with this episode. The result is a splendid example of love of cinema and love of horror with a rocking thriller. One by one, the crew examine what the film is trying to say and reveal with Isabelle's Mary Mason as she spirals down a dark, grisly path.
David drops the horror news knowledge on us this week beginning with a new clip from the film Absence, a low budget film getting strong buzz wrapped in mystery. Next up is news about two BluRay releases that get Doc all excited. Warner Brothers is releasing the classic 1953 Vincent Price film, House of Wax in all its 3D glory. And Millennium Entertainment is releasing Hammer's Dracula, Prince of Darkness starring Christopher Lee. Showtime has the season premiere of Dexter season 8 up on their site and HorrorNews.Net has the link to watch it for free, courtesy of the cable network. Last, but not least, is the news of the documentary about famous poster artist Drew Struzan (Drew - the Man Behind the Poster) which is set to premiere at SDCC 2013.

"BRAINS!" zombies, zombies, zombies!
World War Z is the topic this week as co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr. and Thomas Mariani deconstruct, defend and destroy the watered down zombie-action blockbuster featuring the talents of Brad Bitt. ... Dave steps in to re-animate the podcast with this week’s horror movie news. There’s one more week remaining for the Stoker BluRay contest, catch the details and enter to win.
The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast
Episode 12 – World War Z
World War Z is based on the novel from Max Brooks. Dave and Thomas quickly point out that the movie has very little to do with the book outside the name to much their chagrin. Dave shares his distaste for the matter while Thomas decides he is decidedly in the middle. Santos rants and raves while Doc faces off defending the film "as a summer action flick." The debate gets heated. The review is spoiler heavy and touches upon just about every aspect of the movie, from the director to Brad Pitt to the missing Matthew Fox to the zombies themselves.
David drops the horror news knowledge on us this week beginning with sad news of the passing of legendary horror/sci-fi author Richard Matheson. The prolific writer is responsible for classic horror entries from some of the best Twilight Zone episode to Kolchak: The Night Stalker to The Legend of Hell House to I Am Legend and so much more. Sad, sad news. Next up is the announcement that the Italian band Goblin is touring the States this October (2013) - the band provided music for Dawn of the Dead (1978), Susperia (1977) and more. Next is news and discussion about the found-footage Bigfoot movie, Willow Creek, from the unique director Bobcat Goldthwait. Last news from Dave is announcements from Brad Fuller about the second season of Hannibal. Then Doc jumps in with the rumors of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starring in Terminator 5 - if true, can he salvage this troubled franchise as well?

It's the end of the word and the apocalypse has never been funnier! This is the End is the topic this week as co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Thomas Mariani and Vixen all give the film high praise and adoration. Could it be the most absurd horror comedy in decades? Will Michael Cera gets his revenge? The gang cover the jokes, the scares and the actors as well, who shamelessly take jabs at their own personas. Dave steps in to bring the podcast back down to reality with this week's horror movie news. There's a new contest and some listener feedback.

Episode 11 - This is the End
With This is the End, Jay Burachel and Seth Rogen lead an all-star cast dubbed "The New Doobie Brothers" by Rolling Stone magazine: James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride. The reckoning arrives leaving the cast behind to face the hell that erupts upon Earth. Cameos to beat all cameos and gags to destroy all gags, This is the End nearly gets a perfect score all around from the grue-crew.

Episode 10 - The Purge
In the near future (2022), the United States has become a peace zone due to the initiation of "The Purge" where once a year, for twelve hours, all crime is legal and condoned, even murder. That is the interesting set up for The Purge starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headly. A family is put on edge when the young son allows a strange refuge in their home during the purge causing conflicts in the home between the parents and the loner and outside the home when a group of lunatic strangers show up to claim their prize. Hand over the scourge or die along side him. Vixen stands alone defender her love for this surprise box office hit where she claims the social commentary makes the flm. Based on the original anthology concept from horror fan turned producer Brad Miska, V/H/S/2 has a pair of private detectives breaking into a house looking for their client's missing son but finding a series of horrifying films on VHS tapes...and so much more. The wrap around story, Tape 49, is directed by Simon Barrett. Adam Wingard directs and stars in the first segment, Clinical Trials Phase 1, which turns out to be Vixen's favorite. Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale tackle the next segment, A Ride in the Park, where a biker with a GoPro camera encounters the living dead. Gareth Evans and Timo Tjanjanto team up to direct the third segment, Safe Haven, where a documentary team attempt to expose the secrets of a notorious cult and their charismatic leader. This ends up the favorite of the entire group. Jason Eisener heads up the last segment, Alien Abduction Slumber Party, where a sleep over ends up in dire straights and bright lights. It's a relatively spoiler free rant on each chapter.

Next up is news that Terminator 5 is set to return to James Cameron's possession and that he might step up to direct the next sequel. It’s all about Maniac: Joe Spinell versus Elijah Wood as co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Thomas Mariani and Vixen discuss the William Lustig 1980 classic and the fascinating new remake from Franck Khalfoun. Then Dave Dreher surprises the entire cast by introducing special effects legend Tom Savini as special guest host to discuss secrets and stories behind the making of the original Maniac, Tom’s career and his thoughts about remakes, zombies and Facebook.
The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast
Episode 8 – Maniac with Tom Savini
The original Maniac (1980) is a cult classic, notorious for its seedy representation of New York at the time, its grimy, sweaty lead and the film’s graphic special effects. The film is dark and morose from the onset and never lets up; there is no hope for its lead as he spirals out of control. Joe Spinell oozes creepy serial killer as he flays his victims, placing their bloody scalps on a collection of mannequins in his home. Tom Savini provided the realistic and bloody special effects, including a scene where his character has his head blown off.
Alexandre Aja writes and produces the modern remake of Maniac (2013), placing mousy Elijah Wood into the Spinell-originated lead. Franck (P2) Khalfoun steps in to direct. Wood’s version of Frank Zito is far more disturbed with his mommy issue but also far more less imposing. Until he goes in for the kill, that is. Aja’s script builds upon the original’s story improving on the love story between Frank and Anna while the special effects are as visceral and shocking as ever. Maniac turns out to be one of the better remakes in recent years.
Tom Savini surprises the grue-crew but joining in the discussion bringing his take on the original Maniac film, sharing stories about the classic effects, his approach to gore make-up and his encounters with Joe Spinell. Afterwords, Tom discusses remakes, his career, his current crop of films and a tirade or two: his rebuts the famous “Tom Savini is a dick” blog posts and rants about Facebook. It’s an incredible 40 minutes with the Godfather of Gore.

It’s documentary week at the Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast where co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr. and Thomas Mariani discuss the films Room 237 and My Amityville Horror. In one film, the interviewees try to convince the audience that Stanley Kubrick tried to hide hidden messages into the film The Shining. In the other, Daniel Lutz shares his experiences surviving the terror of the events described within The Amityville Horror. Afterwhich, Dave jumps in with this week’s news.
Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining is thought of as one of the classic horror films and, by many, one of the most frightening. In Room 237 a collection of mega-fans share their theories on many discovered hidden items in the film. Do they spell out Kubrick’s confession of faking the lunar landings? Or do they illustrate the something far more sinister? Santos quickly calls them all out while still enjoying the film.

Episode 3 – Rob Zombie’s The Lord of Salem
Rob Zombie returns to the theater with his latest directorial effort, the horror film The Lords of Salem. The movie features a stellar cast including Sheri Moon Zombie, Meg Foster, Judy Geeson, Patricia Quinn, Dee Wallace and Bruce Davidson. The story deals with the curse of the witch Margaret Morgan on the town of Salem and its effects on a beautiful, young DJ, Hiedi Hawthorne. The film features a bevy of Zombie driven visuals from giant bigfoot like creatures to mummified priests and, of course, a coven of witches. Listen as Doc and Santos debate how successful Rob Zombie is with the film and how wonderful and frightening Meg Foster is as Margaret Morgan.
Discussing a new trend in horror television, the grue-crew circle the VOD horror content on Netflix and Amazon with the TV series Hemlock Grove from Eli Roth and Zombieland from the writers of the feature film. Hemlock Grove takes it serious with a town full of bizarre characters and creatures while Zombieland goes the zombie-comedy route mixing gore and hilarity. After delving into each series, the topic shifts to the impact such content has on the future of horror television.
In this episode’s news section, Dave discusses Dexter’s final season and the possibility of a spin off series. Will it feature Deb in all her cursing glory? We can only hope! Next is information on the sequel I Spit on Your Grave Too. The BluRay specs are in from Scream Factory for John Carpenter’s The Fog. And Dave ends his segment with fascinating updates about the release of Still Screaming, a documentary about Wes Craven’s Scream franchise.

Two big events are happening this week: the release of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead (2013) and the launch of the Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast! That’s right, your favorite horror website, HorrorNews.Net, now has its very own horror podcast.
Co-hosts Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr. and Thomas Mariani join together to recap and review the sequel to the 1981 Sam Raimi classic, Evil Dead. The grue-crew discuss the merits of the film, the success of the movie’s theatrical box office and Jane Levy’s instant rise to scream queen status. The review is surprisingly divisive with not every co-host liking the new film while they all share the same experience in the theater. It’s unanimous, Evil Dead is a brilliant film to see in a crowded theater delivering chills, screams and buckets of blood.
