The topic for Decades of Horror 1980s Episode 200 was chosen by Grue-Believers through a poll placed on YouTube, Facebook, and Patreon. When we came up with the list of films to be included in the poll -- Altered States, Cat People, Night of the Comet, Scanners, and Sleepaway Camp -- Crystal boldly predicted the winner would be Night of the Comet and indeed it was.
As usual, Crystal has a crush on one of the actors, and this time it’s Robert Beltran. She loves the story concept of Night of the Comet and the concise way that story is told populated by likable characters. And how awesome would it be to go on that shopping spree?
Chad sought out the VHS after learning that the makeup effects were provided by David Miller (A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984). For him, Night of the Comet is quintessential 1980s – dumb, but straight-up fun with likable characters – and it takes him right back to that time.
Bill agrees, calling Night of the Comet one of the most 80s movies we’ve ever done, literally screaming, “1980s!” No one gets too broken up about the deaths of the entire population, but, hey, the shopping! Bill also chimes in on the likable characters, and, of course, Mary Woronov is incredible.
Following the principle of “condemnation prior to investigation,” Jeff had never seen Night of the Comet until now and he is so glad the viewers chose it. He is amazed by how likable the characters are and is impressed that the filmmakers stayed away from the annoying teenager trope. He loves where it goes and admits there is really no reason to dislike this movie.
Bearing witness to the 1980s-ness of Night of the Comet, your Grue-Crew digress in a nostalgic way about a crush on Sharon Farrell, Art Bell’s radio show, and bicycles with colored tires and “mag” wheels.

A NOTE ON PODCAST HISTORY FROM DOC ROTTEN
A quick history about Decades of Horror 1980s podcast for those who may be wondering where some of the "early" episodes are. Decades of Horror 1980s is actually our longest-running podcast, predating the start of HORROR NEWS RADIO. A podcast that has changed names many times as well as its format.
Starting off as DOC ROTTEN'S HORROR DRIVE-IN PODCAST in the summer of 2011, the show was solo-hosted by Doc with occasional guest-hosts. As guest-hosts became co-hosts - thank you, Thomas Mariani - the show was renamed THE MONSTER MOVIE PODCAST in May of 2012. At this point, it was basically the model for HORROR NEWS RADIO when it launched in April of 2013 when The Black Saint and Dave Dreher joined Doc and Thomas.
THE MONSTER MOVIE PODCAST shifted its format to lists and special episodes, featuring Top 10 Haunted House Movies, "Let's Remake Everything", the history of Godzilla movies and Top 10 Horror Films of the 1970s AND 1980s. The latter two being two-part episodes each.
With the advent of GRUESOME MAGAZINE, Santos and Doc launched DECADES OF HORROR 1970s and over time Thomas and Doc transformed THE MONSTER MOVIE PODCAST into DECADES OF HORROR 1980s. This name change roughly coincided with the launch of DECADES OF HORROR 1990s lead by Thomas and DECADES OF HORROR The Classic Era lead by Jeff Mohr and Chad Hunt.
It is a joy to know that we have so many fans of each of these podcast adventures diving into the horror films we all love and enjoy with a passion. 10 Years and going strong, ups and downs, losses and rewards. And you! We hope you enjoy episode 200 of DECADES OF HORROR 1980s… and many more episodes to come.

Having never seen Blood for Dracula, you can’t really blame Jeff for picking it as this episode’s topic, right? He found the film to be boring, the nude scenes to be unerotic, the humor to be unfunny, and the dialogue to be just plain dumb. He is, however, reminded of the “Sprockets” sketches on Saturday Night Live and the Black Knight scene in Month Python and the Holy Grail (1975). Doc had always wanted to see Blood for Dracula and thought it would be awesome, … but it’s not. The dialogue is atrocious and features what may be the worst hero ever seen on film. At the same time, he loves it in a weird sort of way because it is so stupid and so dumb. The version of a vampire portrayed by Udo Kier in Blood for Dracula is Bill’s favorite! His manservant bosses him around and Dracula just takes it. He’s absolutely pathetic. Chad found no redeeming qualities whatsoever in Blood for Dracula. Terrible dialogue. No campiness. No comedy. Just no!

This film contains four distinct, separate stories: 1) "Black Hair": A poor samurai who divorces his true love to marry for money, but finds the marriage disastrous and returns to his old wife, only to discover something eerie about her; 2) "The Woman in the Snow": Stranded in a snowstorm, a woodcutter meets an icy spirit in the form of a woman who spares his life on the condition that he never tells anyone about her. A decade later he forgets his promise; 3) "Hoichi the Earless": Hoichi is a blind musician, living in a monastery who sings so well that a ghostly imperial court commands him to perform the epic ballad of their death battle for them. But the ghosts are draining away his life, and the monks set out to protect him by writing a holy mantra over his body to make him invisible to the ghosts. But they've forgotten something; 4) "In a Cup of Tea": a writer tells the story of a man who keeps seeing a mysterious face reflected in his cup of tea.

Kwaidan is Daphne’s pick and she loves every single second of the 183-minute runtime. In fact, she watched it three times! The beauty of the film, the amazing storytelling, and both the sound and set design blew her away. Chad agrees that it is a beautiful film with wonderful sets and music and appreciates how the four segments are based on supernatural folk tales. For the record, his favorite of the four is “The Woman of the Snow.” As a big lover of world folklore and ghost stories, Whitney is also on the Kwaidan bandwagon, granting it everything anyone could want in finely detailed sets, makeup, and folklore. The middle two stories, “The Woman of the Snow” and “Hoichi the Earless,” grabbed her the most. Jeff is gobsmacked by Kwaiden, calling it a stunningly beautiful film. He loved all the stories but “Hoichi the Earless” is his favorite with its historical prologue.
If you haven’t seen Kwaidan, the Classic Era Grue-Crew strongly recommends it. Yes, three hours is a long slog, but the individual stories are completely separate, so you can digest it a piece at a time. So if you haven’t seen it, do it know. If you have seen it, watch it again! Don’t make them break their feet off in your ass! At the time of this writing, Kwaidan is available to stream on The Criterion Channel and HBOmax, and on physical media as a Blu-ray disc from Criterion.

This one is Doc’s pick. He had long wanted to watch it so when it dropped onto Shudder, it also dropped immediately into the Decades of Horror 1970s schedule. Doc describes his watch of Flesh for Frankenstein as truly an experience. He goes on to call Udo Kier’s performance something to behold and expresses his appreciation for Carlo Rambaldi’s effects work. Flesh for Frankenstein is so much fun in 3D that Bill enjoyed it at first, despite its bad dialogue. He thinks it has a great beginning and a great last ten minutes, and Udo Kier is amazing but it’s a weird, weird movie in the style of a 1970s European comedy. Jeff saw Flesh for Frankenstein during its initial 3D theatrical release. Even as a nineteen-year-old, it was not the nudity that stuck in his mind. It was a very specific 3D gore shot that took up residence in his memory. Chad hated Flesh for Frankenstein the first time he saw it and he still doesn’t understand the point. It’s one film he just can’t get behind. And is Baroness Katrin Frankenstein the Baron’s sister or his wife or both? It’s so confusing.
If you’ve never seen, as Bill puts it, this weird, weird film or you would like to refresh your memory, now might be the time to do so. As of this writing, Flesh for Frankenstein is available to stream on Shudder, and a 4K UHD disc is forthcoming from Vinegar Syndrome.

Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare, also known as The Great Yokai War, is the middle film of a Yokai trilogy from Daiei Film, the same folks that brought us the Daimijin Trilogy. The first of the Yokai Monsters Trilogy is Yokai Monsters: 100 Monsters (1968) and the third film in the trilogy is Yokai Monsters: Along with Ghosts (1969). Bryan Clark, guest host and a self-proclaimed kaiju and tokusatsu geek, chose Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare as the subject for this episode’s podcast and the Classic Era’s Grue-Crew are delighted with his choice.
Daphne loves Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare and found the Yokai to be charming. She is enchanted with the overall childlike feeling and atmosphere of the film created by the Yokai, the music, and the cinematography. Chad had never heard of Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare and didn’t know what to expect. He finds the same kind of charm he found in H.R. Pufnstuf (1969-1970) as a youth, loving the cool monsters with individual personalities alongside fun with a dangerous edge and a bonkers imagination. Now he vows to watch the entire trilogy. Jeff also loves the weird anthropomorphic creatures and is intrigued by the centuries-old Japanese folklore of the Yokai. Bryan is a sucker for old-fashioned, man-in-suit monsters, and Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare delivers. The Yokai creations are so wild in concept, design, and personality that it’s impossible not to be charmed by them.
Your Classic Era Grue-Crew all intend to watch the complete trilogy of Yokai Monsters movies. If you are also so inclined, Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare is available to stream from various subscription and PPV streaming services, and on Blu-ray physical media in Yokai Monsters Collection (3-Disc Limited Edition) and Yokai Monsters Collection (3-Disc Standard Special Edition) from Arrow Video. The Limited Edition was released October 19, 2021, and the “Standard Special Edition” is to be released February 22, 2022. Both sets include Takashi Miike’s The Great Yokai War (2005) as a fourth movie. The only differences this writer can find between the two offerings are postcards featuring newly commissioned artwork for each film by Jolyon Yates and a foldout ‘yokai guide’ poster illustrated by Jolyon Yates, both included with the Limited Edition.

How can you go wrong with The Devil Rides Out? With Terence Fisher, Richard Matheson, Dennis Wheatley, Christopher Lee, Charles Gray, Sarah Lawson, and David Eddington all involved in creating a film for Hammer, it was bound to be memorable.
Whitney is taken with Christopher Lee’s turn as a protagonist while Chad has always been appreciative of director Terence Fisher’s work. You can always count on Richard Matheson to deliver a quality screenplay according to Joseph and The Devil Rides Out is no exception. Jeff, on the other hand, takes a deep, deep dive into the details surrounding this film and drones on way, way, way too much. The other members of the Classic Era Grue-Crew may want to get a mute button.
The Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew gives this film the highest recommendation and they all plan to watch The Devil Rides Out again and again. At this writing, the film is available as a Scream Factory Blu ray with a multitude of added features.

Your loyal Grue-Crew can’t gush enough over The Body Snatcher and considering the cast and crew, it’s easy to see why! This one is Whitney’s pick and she gives her customary, insightful point-of-view into the motivations of the story’s characters. According to Chad, Karloff gives what might be his best performance and even though Lugosi’s part is small, his character and one pivotal scene with Karloff are critical to the film’s success. Jeff reveals his growing fan-boy crush on all things Lewton and wallows in cast-related and historical trivia as usual. This time he’s even talking about Bill Williams and Robert Clarke.
As a whole, the Classic Era Grue-Crew love the look and feel of The Body Snatcher and give it the highest recommendation!

Of course, the Classic Era Grue Crew knows Batman: The Movie is not a horror movie, but they just couldn’t help themselves. From the beginning of the podcast, they’ve been making connections between the film they discussed and Batman (TV-Series. 1966-1968) and even some of the Batman films. It was inevitable that they would eventually pull the Bat-trigger and feature this 1966 film. Joseph was the one who finally put it on the schedule and everyone had beaucoup Bat-fun covering this Batman: The Movie.
Chad points out Adam West wasn’t a shoo-in for the role of Batman and encourages us to check out Lyle Waggoner’s screentest on YouTube. Other works in horror by the cast and crew are identified by Joseph while Jeff focuses on other screenplays written by Lorenzo Semple Jr. Whitney notices Adam West’s version of Batman is more nurturing toward Robin than most later depictions. If you haven’t seen this campy and fun film, your Grue Crew highly recommends you watch Batman: The Movie in the near future!

Longtime Horror News Radio listeners are sure to remember that HNR co-host - and award-winning filmmaker - Christopher G. Moore listed NIGHTMARE CINEMA on his top 10 horror films of 2018, having seen the film at the New York City Horror Film Festival in November. His admiration of the film was strong making the rest of the Grue-Crew incredibly curious about this new anthology film. Well, this week brings good news!
NIGHTMARE CINEMA is finally arriving on this Friday, June 21, 2019, and to celebrate Gruesome Magazine has declared this week Nightmare Cinema Week. With this special episode of Horror News Radio, the Grue-Crew present a special interview with the director and creator of Nightmare Cinema, the legendary Mick Garris.
Join Christopher as he sits down with the man with the plan himself to discuss gathering the talent to craft this anthology, working with Mickey Rourke, and directing his segment titled "Dead". And, if you listen closely, he may even tease the possibility of a Nightmare Cinema 2.
The Grue-Crew welcomes Rafe Telsch to the fold to review Darren Aronofsky's latest cinematic wonder Mother! (2017). The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfieffer. Rafe confirms that if you are an Aronofsky fan, you will want to see Mother!; however, he warns the film goes a bit insane for its third act. Having just seen it prior to recording his review, Rafe suggests that his rating of the film could either climb a point or drop a point as he continues to digest the film itself. The Grue-Crew are at again, counting down the best horror films of the year. 2016 was a bastard of a year stealing the most talented from us way too soon and shaking up politics and popular opinion. Yet, horror films ruled supreme winning at the box office and surprising horror fans on Blu-ray and VOD. The Black Saint, Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Doc Rotten gather one last time for the year to reveal their top ten films which include high profile theatrical releases, hit foreign films, and challenging low-budget independent films. The lists are full of curiosities and expected hits alike with Train to Busan and The Conjuring 2 racking up the most notices.
And still 2016 has one last terrific entry for horror fans with the December release of The Autopsy of Jane Doe from director Andre Ovredal featuring Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox in the lead roles. The film manages to do what many films cannot - provide a thrilling mystery and a rewarding twist. The direction, the acting, and the cinematography combine to bring one last atmospheric, scary horror film to fans. The only disappointing thing about the film is that is was denied a theatrical release.
Dave guides the Horror News of the Week with a trio of trailers. First up is the Alien: Covenant trailer released on Christmas day, for some reason. Next is a clip from the upcoming film Beyond Skyline, and who cares. Last up is the awkward IMAX trailer for The Mummy missing much of its audio track, and it's is so much better for it, for all the wrong reasons.

Episode 195 – The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) – The Best Horror Films of 2016

2016 ends on a great note with the film The Autopsy of Jane Doe, which ends up on many of the best of the year lists. The film is from the director of Trollhunters, Andre Ovredal, following a mortician and his son as the perform an autopsy on an unknown victim of a horrific crime scene. Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox are fantastic, and convincing, as the father and son, providing horror some of the best performances of the year. The story behind the death of "Jane Doe" is enthralling, capturing the audience's attention and never letting go. Gruesome and frightening, the Grue-Crew have a great time recapping and reviewing this late addition to the horror films of 2016.
The Grue-Crew dive into their best of lists for 2016 with fandom delight and enthusiastic glee. 2016 is a great year for horror films. The only drawback is how difficult to keep the top list to only ten films. Dave, The Black Saint, Thomas and Doc all get their opportunity to plead their cases for their top 10 list, some films repeat in nearly each list, while others a small surprises and, perhaps, questionable inclusions. So, here it is, the Best Horror Films of 2016.

The film cranks up the final minutes of the movie but it is too little too late for a cinematic turkey of a horror film. Somewhere Pazuzu laughs until his side hurts.

Upon reviewing video footage from the States, the Vatican becomes convinced the Anti-Christ is possessing the body of a young American named Angela. THE VATICAN TAPES attempts to spin a unique yarn in the Exorcist vein and falls on its underdeveloped face. The grue-crew unanimously and unceremoniously trounce the latest theatrical horror offering.
Originally swearing he would never see another Adam Sandler film, Thomas Mariani manages to catch a screening of Sandler's PIXELS directed by Chris Columbus. Infuriated, the young co-host and film critic destroys the film while curmudgeon The Black Saint attempts to share how the film was entirely up his alley providing low-brow, silly fun.
Dave shares the Horror News of the Week with news of TEMPLE being directed by the Vicious Brothers and written by Simon Barrett. Universal proudly announces that JURASSIC WORLD 2 will be coming our way in 2018. THE VISITORS is promising to be a modern effects-driven masterpiece equivalent of John Carpenter's The Thing. We shall see. The new X-FILES TV show is stoking the fire with some new pics and info about the show. Fox is providing a special advanced screening of their new TV horror show, SCREAMS QUEENS.
