Feature Review: Phantasm Ravager (2016)

For the first time without Don Coscarelli behind the camera, the Phantasm series returns with Phantasm Ravager. The film is episodic and disjointed but has a familiar charm to it as the story follows Reggie searching for Mike and Jody. There are plenty of balls chasing after him and the 1971 Plymout Barracuda is not too far behind either. A few other faces from the franchise appear as well along with the final appearance of Angus Scrimm as the Tall Man. Boooooy!

Convention Report: Monsterama (2016 - Atlanta, GA)

Gruesome Magazine and Horror News Radio wish to extend a huge "Thank You" to the kind folks behind Monsterma Con in Atlanta. Due to Hurricane Matthew, the Grue-crew were unable to attend the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida. Without hesitation, the Monsterama gang opened their doors to any Spooky Empire ticket holders and to Doc Rotten and Christopher G. Moore. The guest list included Caroline Munro, Susanna Leigh, Trina Parks, and Zach Galligan among many others. It was great to see old friends and meet new fans of the show. Thank you, Monsterama.

We have to leave, right now." Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum recap and review the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke with Chapter Four. The format continues to impress and the speculation begins to grow. And why, Cricket, why!?!?

Season 6 Episode 4– "Chapter Four"

American Horror Story: Roanoke continues to get better and better with each episode. This episode brings back a splatterific orgy of gore and shocks as the Pig-man Monster returns, the Jane Sisters are torn apart (literally), and see far more of our beloved Cricket than we ever expected. Kathy Bates is killing it as The Butcher carving up the cast left and right. The images are scary and frightening. And the performances are incredible: Cuba Gooding Jr. reaches for the Emmy as his character struggles to deal with the aftermath of last episode's reveal.

Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore and Derek Tatum drop everything to bring this episode together at the last minute. Previously scheduled to appear at Spooky Empire in Orlando, Florida, the crew were prepared to skip this episode and double up next week. But, then, Mother Nature stepped in and surprised the entire East Coast. Plans changed. Christopher and Doc shifted from going to Spooky Empire (which had to cancel the event due to the life threatening weather) and headed to Monsterama in Atlanta, Georgia instead. A huge thank you to the crew at Monsterama for hosting American Horror Story Fan podcast (along with Horror News Radio). Derek (who was also at Monsterama!) joins Christopher and Doc to discuss what they call the best show of the season yet! Dave Dreher will return next week to provide his thoughts.

Episode 92 – Evil Dead II (1987)

The first official selection in Decades of Horror 2016 October Selection, EVIL DEAD II is one of the fiercest, funniest classics of the age cementing director Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and the lead character Ash as horror icons. The film is full of practical effects lead by Mark Shostrom and supported by the beginnings of KNB, Robert Kurtzman, Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger. The effects are phenomenon, the direction is revolutionary and chaotic, and Bruce Campbell is brilliant as poor, abused Ash. The Eighties would not be the same with out this film.

Thomas Mariani is joined by Doc Rotten and Christopher G. Moore to take a look at Christopher's selection for this month's special look at the top horror films of the decade. Christopher reveals what the film means to him and how it influenced his love for horror film and his directorial career. Doc shares catching the film when it was released and the reaction it garnered in its NC17 theatrical run. Thomas round out the affection for this film sharing how he caught the film at a young age. Evil Dead II is one of the most influential and magical horror films of the decade. "Then let's head on down into that cellar and carve ourselves a witch." - Ash Williams.

I Am Not A Serial Killer - Episode 183 - Horror News Radio 0

IFC is distributing one of the most surprising and rewarding independent horror features of the year with I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER. The thoroughly engrossing small but effective film is from director Billy O'Brien featuring Christopher Lloyd, Max Records, and Laura Fraser. The Grue-crew are generally united in their opinion of the film of a young high school kid who may be showing signs of character traits commonly associated with serial killers. When a series of murders plague his small town, the young man investigates who may be behind the killings. And, then, it goes off the rails!

Thomas reviews Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, the latest film from Tim Burton for this week's edition of What Have You Been Watching. Thomas dives into the complexities of the overwrought story and the lack of originality to all the overactive imagination. Eva Green highlights the cast along with Asa Butterfield and Samual L. Jackson and a large supporting cast of familiar and famous faces.

Dave dives into the Horror News of the Week with the blah blah blah. Doc and Gruesome Magazine writer Paul Cardullo attended Wreak Havoc Film Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina this late September/early October. The Knoxville Horror Film Festival is coming October 21-23, 2016 in Knoxville, TN. Feature Review: I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016)

The surprisingly genre ingrained low budget thriller I Am Not a Serial Killer sneaks into VOD outlets from IFC. The film from director Billy O'Brien is phenomenal, smart film well worth seeking out and devouring at the earliest convenience. Max Records stars as John Wayne Cleaver, a young man who is diagnosed as a potential sociopath. While battling his own demons, John follows the trail of a killer that has descended on his small town only to discover surprises that are both fascinating and horrifying. Oh, boy!

What Have You Been Watching: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Tim Burton returns with a book adaptation Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children from author Ransom Riggs. In the film, Asa Butterfield discovers a home for gifted youngsters run by Miss Peregrine (Eva Green). He sides with them to save them from Mr. Barron, the leader of the Wights played by Samuel L. Jackson. While the film did respectable at this weekend's box office, it failed to register with HNR's very own Thomas Mariani who shares his suffering and dwindling admiration for director Tim Burton. Oh, man...

A very different film than the original 1956 Vincent Price classic, the terrifying fate of Seth Brundle is a much more horrific and groteque look at what happens when a man is spliced with the DNA of a common house fly. Look out for...Brundlefly. Let the fun begin! Thomas Mariani, Doc Rotten and Christopher G. Moore tackle another gruesome horror film from the 1980s.

Episode 91 – The Fly (1986)

Coming off his classics Scanners, Videodrome and The Dead Zone, director David Cronenberg crafts his most accessible and more disgusting masterpieces with The Fly (1986). With Seth Brundle, he takes his obsession with body horror to new heights as Brundle's body slowly rejects his human body and becomes half-man, half-fly. The man becomes Brundlefly! Jeff Goldblum stars as Brundle giving the character a lonely, driven pathos that starkly contrasts to the personality - and vitality - the fly-infused version exhibits. The result is fascinating...to the audience. To his love interest reporter Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis), it is terrifying! John Getz rounds out the cast as Stathis Borans, the editor of the magazine Veronica works for, his character is obsessed with exposing Brundle until he fears for Veronica's life and steps into Brundle's path of horror. Oh, and did we say the film was gory. Yeah, it is gory.

Thomas Mariani is joined by Doc Rotten and Christopher G. Moore to take a look on of the best remakes of a horror film ever made. The grue-crew examine the performances, the direction and the effects as they discuss Seth's journey from Brundle to Brundlefly. They marvel at Jeff Goldblum's terrific performance in the lead role, wondering how did he get overlooked at the Oscars that year. Geena Davis makes an impressive debut providing the line of warning from this article's introduction. But it's the effects that astonish, amaze and nauseate the crew as they look at the transformation and the methods of dissolving Brudlefly's food. Then the discussion turns to whether The Fly is Cronenberg's best film of his entire career.

Season 6 Episode 3– "Chapter Three"

American Horror Story: Roanoke continues to impress as a new character is introduced to tie everything together. Who saw Cricket coming? What a pleasant surprise. The diminutive actor channels Zelda Rubinstein's Tangina from Poltergeist to do battle with The Butcher, once known as Thomasin White (Kathy Bates) and steals the episode from Cuba Gooding Jr, Sarah Paulson and Angela Bassett. The mystery behind the house, the pigs and the disappearance of young Flora deepens as the Millers continue to explore their land and those that inhabit it.

Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher and Derek Tatum welcome back Christopher G. Moore to look at the latest episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke as a number of interesting events begin to shape this season. One in particular catches Derek's attention as the camera pulls back from the talking head version of Lee (Adina Porter). For the first time, AHS reveals the film team behind the show, proving glimpses of the set, the crew and the voice behind the interviews. Is that Cheyenne Jackson we hear? Could be. Also, Lady Gaga takes a more mysterious role this season as a tree spirit of some sort, creating The Butcher out of a dying Thomasin White. And, yeah, those feral children...what the heck?!

Rob Zombie returns with another grind house exercise in excess with 31. The film features Sheri Moon Zombie, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Meg Foster, Kevin Jackson, and Malcolm McDowell. The grue-crew tackle the film, available now on VOD, with a combination of eager curiosity and unshakable dread. His past film, Lords of Salem, was praised by The Black Saint but panned by Doc and Thomas. How will their reaction to 31 match up to the other films in Zombie's filmography. Oh, dear...

Thomas reviews the third season premiere of Star Wars Rebels with the hour-long episode "Steps into Shadow." The 3D CG animation series from Lucasfilm Animation is currently available on Disney XD and features characters such as Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Hera Syndulla, Sbaine Wren, and Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios along with, according to Thomas, a few fan-favorite surprises. If you're eagerly waiting on Rogue One to debut in December, perhaps Star Wars Rebels is your fix.

Feature Review: Rob Zombie's 31 (2016)

The madman musician behind House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, Halloween (2007), Halloween II (2009), and Lords of Salem (2012) returns with 31. And...wow...Thomas is pissed, while The Black Saint and Dave are rather unimpressed and Doc Rotten is...apologetic. The film follows a small band of carnies making their way across country when they are kidnapped by a band of maniacs pitting them against their will against a clan of murderous clowns. They go by the names Sick-Head, Psycho-Head, Schizo-Head, Death-Head and Sex-Head. But none of them compare to the worst of the worst, Doom-Head played with zeal and charisma by the film-stealing Richard Brake. Sheri Moon Zombie, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Kevin Jackson and Meg Foster must survive 12 hours trapped in Malcolm McDowell's murderworld known as 31.

What Have You Been Watching: Star Wars Rebels (2016)

Turning to the lighter side of the genre, Thomas takes a loving look at the Star Wars animated property Rebels, now in its third season. While The Force Awakens gets all the hype and Rogue One is stealing the spotlight, this Lucasfilm Animation series, according to young Thomas, is far closer to the spirit of Star Wars than the live action offerings Disney is producing thus far. The stories take place fourteen years after Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and five years before the opening of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

This week Chad Hunt and Joey Fittos join Doc Rotten to look at two horror TV show premiering on FOX the week of September 25. The first is the return of SCREAM QUEENS for its second season. The horror comedy is from Ryan Murphy and features Jamie Lee Curtis. The second is the series debut of THE EXORCIST adapting the popular horror film to the small screen. Chad and Joey chime in with their thoughts on the horror happenings this week.

Next up is an interview with director Todd Nunes whose film ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE lands on DVD/Blu-Ray October 11, 2016. Doc first met the director at the recent Genre Blast Film Festival where Todd presented Doc with the most interesting marketing swag. You'll have to listen to hear what that may be. Next up on Todd's plate is the remake of Don't Look in the Basement going by the often used alternate title for that film DEATH WARD 13.

REVIEW: The Exorcist / Scream Queens (FOX 2016)

The fall season is upon us and with it a treasure trove of horror content. It is amazing the amount of genre content available for horror fans on TV in 2016. Doc is joined by Gruesome Magazine writers Chad Hunt and Joey Fittos to discuss two shows that debuted on FOX this past week. Scream Queens is more of a comedy than horror but it contains ample amounts of blood and shocking content. And it also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Keke Palmer, Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourd, Niecy Nash, Kirstie Alley, Taylor Lautner and John Stamos. And that's just the beginning. On Friday night, FOX debuted its straight up horror offering, The Exorcist. The first episode is directed by Ruport Wyatt and features Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Alan Ruck and Geena Davis. And, believe us, FOX gets its scary on. Whew...

INTERVIEW: Todd Nunes, director All Through the House (2016)

Arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on October 11, 2016 is the holiday horror-comedy All Through the House. Doc Rotten sits down with director Todd Nunes to discuss making the film, getting into horror and his next project Death Ward 13. The film puts a humorous twist on the killer Santa sub-genre with plenty of sex, violence, blood and gore...and laughs. The cast includes Ashley Mary Nunes, Jessica Cameron, Melynda Kiring and Lito Velasco. After all that, you will want to hear about Todd's next project, the remake of Don't Look in the Basement!

The Funhouse (1981) - Episode 90 - Decades of Horror 1980s 0

"Something is alive in the funhouse...something that, tonight, will turn the funhouse into a carnival of terror!" - the tagline for Toby Hooper's THE FUNHOUSE promises a nightmare of horror and delivers, mostly, featuring "Gunther" make-up designed by Rick Baker and executed by Craig Reardon. Let the fun begin! Thomas Mariani, Doc Rotten and Christopher G. Moore tackle another gruesome horror film from the 1980s.

Episode 90 – The Funhouse (1981)

Tobe Hooper returns to the director's chair for the latest horror classic examined by the Grue-crew for Decades of Horror 1980s. This film leads his career directly into Poltergeist where he would flirt with becoming a "Hollywood" director. The Funhouse is a low budget slasher-esque film that has a group of teens sneaking into the traveling carnival's funhouse for the night. While peaking through the floor boards, they witness the mysterious man in the Frankenstein mask strangle the frisky fortune teller to death with his bare hands. Add in some sticky fingers and a curmudgeon carney with a penchant for violence and a horror film is born. The kids try to escape the funhouse with their lives. This is a Hooper film so we know that doesn't go terribly well for these misfit kids. Eh?

Thomas, Christopher, and Doc debate back and forth on the merits of this particular Toby Hooper entry. Some like the setting, some like the make-up while others despise the kids and have a huge issue with the motivation of "The Monster" and the kids as they witness his inability to make good decisions. Let's just say he has trouble understanding the value of money. The make-up is impressively designed but does not have enough articulation to make its onscreen appearances entirely successful. Yes, Hooper shows off his talent in a number of key scenes, most notably when Lis is trapped in a ventilation shaft with the fan behind her and the monster approaching.

Season 6 Episode 2– "Chapter Two"

This week American Horror Story gives its feverish fans glimpses of the roles fan-favorites are going to play this season with Kathy Bates, Wes Bentley and Lady Gaga appearing as a group of pagans firing up their pit of horror in the woods. But before we can ask "Is that Lady Gaga?" their gone and we're back at the mansion. We do get introduced to a lovely pair of murderous maidens in the form of sister nurses Miranda (Maya Rose Berkos) and Bridget (Kristen Rakes). Lee's daughter Flora (Saniyya Sidney) also stops by for a visit and discovers a lonely ghost named Priscilla hiding in the closet. But its the introduction of Dr. Elias Cunningham (Denis O'Hare) that has Shelby and Matt worried the most as his found footage tape reveal some of the house's most violent secrets.

The Grue-crew give their thoughts on all the major plot points, scares and surprises. They dive into some interesting news from the past week, including Ryan Murphy revealing something interesting about episode 6. And, it's time for some listener feedback, featuring a special message from past co-host Thomas Mariani.

Blair Witch (2016) - Episode 181 - Horror News Radio 0

The surprise sequel of the year, Blair Witch, landed in theaters this weekend taking the second spot at the box office. The film from Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, originally announced as The Woods, was revealed at Comic Con this past Spring to be a direct follow up to the granddaddy of all found footage films, The Blair Witch Project. While the initial buzz was extremely positive, the reaction from most of the grue-crew is decidedly less so. One review is powerfully negative, the reviewer gives the film a whopping zero out of five. Oh, man, the heat is on.

Thomas delivers a special installment of Stump the Saint this week as the game-show-esque segment of Horror News Radio celebrates its one year anniversary in its current format. Thomas gathers topics from you, the avid listener on Facebook and Twitter, to generate three trivia questions to toss at The Black Saint in hope to stump him soundly. Be careful, you may get "banned"!

Dave begin the show with the Horror News of the Week discussing a variety of items about the new Re-Animator remake, the upcoming Annabelle 2, and the Netflix original film Little Evil. Doc and Gruesome Magazine writer Paul Cardullo are heading to Wreak Havoc Film Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina this late September/early October. Feature Review: Blair Witch (2016)

Fan favorite director Adam Wingard and his writing partner Simon Barrett tackle the Blair Witch franchise with the first returning installment in nearly 15 years with the matter-of-fact-ly titled BLAIR WITCH. The found footage film is a direct sequel to The Blair Witch Project (1999) following Heather's young brother, all grown up, looking for the truth behind what happened to his sibling lost in the woods all those years ago. While he and his friends are mega-prepared with modern technology for a trip into the Burkittsville Maryland forest, he manages to get hopeless lost and subsequently hunted by something hidded in...the woods. But, what will the HNR Grue-crew think of the film?

REVIEW: Creepy (BiFan 2016)

Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the master behind films such as Kairo (aka Pulse) and Cure, returns with a new exploration into the depths of horror with Creepy. The Japanese film played at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival 2016 and Gruesome Magazine writer Joseph Perry was there to witness the madness. He now joins us to share his review of this upcoming classic that earns its title. The film features Hidetoshi Nishijima, Yûko Takeuchi, and Toru Baba.

HORROR TV: Fear the Walking Dead (2016)

The Walking Dead is one of those shows that will go down in the history books and shines the spotlight brightly on horror on TV regardless. The show is nearly critic proof at this point. But is the spin off companion series Fear the Walking Dead worthy of the same respect. Joey Fittos from Gruesome Magazine joins Doc to dive into his love/hate relationship with the show. He shares how Nick has gone from the character he despised the most in Season 1 to the character he loves the most in Season 2. He also dives into his thoughts for the remaining season and how it should line up with its parent show TWD.

The sixth season of American Horror Story is here! Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk pulled a fast one on AHS fans by refusing to reveal the theme of this season, right up to the very premiere of Season 6 Episode 1. What we found as we tuned in 10:00 PM Wednesday, September 14, 2016 was a brand new format and a slower pace. Murphy and Falchuk introduce a couple who have moved into a potentially haunted house in North Carolina. Matt and Shelby are interviewed talking head style played by Andre Holland and Lily Rabe. Meanwhile, the reenactments feature Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson portraying the lead characters. Before the end of the episode they are joined by Adina Porter and Angela Bassett playing Matt's sister Lee.

In September of 2016, two podcasters disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while recording a secret podcast. A week later, their raw recordings were found. That's right! In anticipation of the super secret film Blair Witch, Gruesome Magazine recorded a super secret show for all you loyal Grue Believers. We've already got shows about horror from the 1970s and 1980s, but what about the decade all the kids are talking about on their Buzzfeeds and Twitters: The 1990s?! To kick off a podcast all about this rebellious, curious and underrated decade for horror, host Thomas Mariani decided to bring on found footage fan Doc Rotten to record an episode all about 1999's The Blair Witch Project!

Feature Review: Yoga Hosers (2016)

Kevin Smith returns continuing his Canadian adventures with Yoga Hosers featuring Lily-Rose Depp, Harley Quinn Smith and Johnny Depp. Thomas Mariani steps in to warn each and every HNR fan to think twice before stepping into this heaping pile of manure. Yeah, that's right, he did not like it. But, just how much did he not like it. Oh, dear God. It's brutal.

Feature Review: Morgan (2016)

While Yoga Hosers is a smaller release by comparison, Morgan landed in 2000 theaters this weekend to a paltry $2 million box office. Thud. The film tanked, hard. The Black Saint is the only crew member to suffer through the film. He is here to share his thoughts - in his usual Black Saint style.

Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI - Episode 89 - Decades of Horror 1980s 0

"Some folks have a strange idea of entertainment." - For Tom McLoughlin's installment of the F13 franchise, Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI, Bob Larkin takes the role of Martin the Caretaker, replacing Crazy Ralph and providing a series of great lines such as this. The witty script sets the tone for a lively installment in the series that is far more self aware than previous F13 films. Let the fun begin! Thomas Mariani, Doc Rotten and Christopher G. Moore tackle another gruesome horror film from the 1980s. Let's welcome the biggest Jason fan of the Grue-crew from Horror News Radio, Dave Dreher, to the show to discuss his favorite Friday the 13th flick.

Episode 89 – Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

Describe him as you will, but C. J. Graham's and Dan Bradley's Jason in Part VI is part Frankenstein, part Zombie, but all slasher. In the opening scene Tommy Jarvis (Thom Matthews) returns from Part IV: Final Chapter and Part V: A New Beginning to cremate Jason's remains buried in a Crystal Lake cemetery. Instead, he and his buddy Allan Hawkes (Ron Palillo) inadvertently resurrect the killer with lightning. After ripping "Horshack's" heart out, Zombie Jason is on the move chasing Tommy back to Crystal Lake. Ah, movies, such fun. The film is a riot with great action, a murderously inventive Jason and fun characters. Who doesn't love Jennifer Cooke as Tommy's new love interest, Megan Garris. And, ironically, for the first time in the series, there are actual kids at the camp, leading to an interesting scene where Jason shambles into their bunk room.

Grue-crew member David Dreher joins the DoH gang to take a look at one of the films most near and dear to his heart. While, as the curator of Savini.com, he has a strong affection for the first Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter, he admits that he loves Jason Lives just as much. Along with Christopher, Doc and Thomas, he revisits the film going over each shocking kill and all the new mythology added to Jason's motives and stamina. Lightning, who knew? Check out the episode and relive probably the most fun entry into the Friday the 13th franchise. C'monl, it even has an Alice Cooper theme song. What's not to love.

This week Joseph Perry chimes in from across the globe, South Korea to be exact. Mr. Perry is excited to share his thoughts with the HNR Extra listeners on a number of films he caught at the recent Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. This week is dives into the highly regarded Polish dybbuk film DEMON from director Marcin Wrona. Get the behind the scenes info on BiFan along with Joseph's review of this terrific film.

Interviewed this week are Clint Carney and Kelton Jones from DRY BLOOD. The film recently has its East Coast premiere at the GenreBlast Film Festival in Culpeper, Va and the duo were on hand to promote their feature film. Doc sits down with Clint and Kelton to discuss what it took to make this incredible look into the fragile mind of Brian Barnes, a recovering drug addict with a fractured mind.

REVIEW: Demon (BiFan 2016)

In Demon, a bridegroom struggles with a powerful spirit called a dybbuk trying to take over his mind and body. Of course this all occurs during the wedding ceremony itself. The powerful and well-received film is reviewed by Horror News Radio foreign correspondent Joseph Perry who caught the film at the 2016 Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.

INTERVIEW: Clint Carney and Kelton Jones from Dry Blood

The writing/directing team of Clint Carney and Kelton Jones sit down with Doc Rotten to discuss their feature film debut Dry Blood. They discuss their roles in the film, both onscreen and behind the camera. The dive into some of the special effects, sound design and cast. Carney and Jones reveal some of the challenges and rewards of writing, producing, directing and starring in their first horror feature film and what it takes to get the film completed and on the road. It's an interview worthy of fans and film makers alike.

The Grue-crew board the horror express known as Train to Busan. The South Korean horror film is an incredible new entry into the zombie sub-genre that gets the HNR gang very excited to discuss how successful it is on this episode. If only Joseph Perry were here. Ha! Also, this episode, Thomas settles in to recap and review the animated extravaganza Kubo and the Two Strings. It's Asian zombies in one film and a Japanese samuri beetle, a Moon King and a wooden monkey on the other. Bizarre!

Dave launches into the Horror News of the Week discussing a variety of news about a Lost Boys TV series on the CW, the reveal of the new Pennywise from Stephen King's It and the announcement of a new Godzilla anime adventure. Not only are the Grue-crew going to Dragon*Con this year, Doc and Gruesome Magazine writer Paul Cardullo are heading to GenreBlast Film Festival in Culpeper, Virginia this August 19 - 21, 2016 and to Wreak Havoc Film Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina this late September/early October.

Feature Review: Train to Busan (2016)

The trailer for Train to Busan looked to promise an exciting Asian look at zombies as a group of heroes look to escape the apocalypse aboard a bullet train from Seoul to Busan. The film delivers with exciting zombie action with roots in Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later and World War Z but something far more unique. As the Black Saint points out, Train to Busan follows the structure of a classic disaster film. Think Poseidon Adventure or Earthquake. On top of that, the film has a heart with its core characters battling emotional and moral dilemmas as well. The film ranks high with the grue-crew.

What Have You Been Watching: Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)

Thomas Mariani steps in with his review of the animated highlight of the Summer Kubo and the Two Strings. While the film struggles to attract an audience in the theaters over its opening weekend, the reviews are strong for this film from Laika, the animation house behind such films like Coraline, ParaNorman and Boxtrolls. The voice cast includes Art Parkinson, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara and George Takei.

Phantom of the Paradise (1974) - Episode 40 - Decades of Horror 1970s 0

"Carburetors man! That's what life is all about." - The opening lyrics of the song Upholstery from the rock opera Phantom of the Paradise sum it all up nicely. Music is the creative juice of life and sometimes to succeed in the music business you have to deal with shady characters. In the Brian De Palma classic, Winslow (William FInley) strikes a bargain with record label exec Swan (Paul Williams). The film mixes Faust, Phantom of the Opera and The Portrait of Dorian Gray into a lively, horror-tinged manic musical. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode 40 – Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

The film we've been talking about for 39 episodes and two years finally makes it to the editing room as Doc and The Black Saint discuss Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise. Joining the crew this week are Thomas Mariani, Horror News Radio co-host, and Christopher G. Moore, award winning director. Surprisingly, not everyone loves this often overlooked film. Shot between Sisters and Carrie, Brian De Palma hones his craft with music, murder and mayhem, never missing the opportunity to pay homage to a classic influence be it Alfred HItchcock or Orson Welles. The cast includes William Finley, Paul Williams, Jessica Harper and Garrit Graham with Williams supplying all the original songs.

Resting in the shadows of the cult phenomenon Rocky Horror Picture Show, De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise offers a craftier, more cinematic alternative to Time Warps and Sweet Transvestites from Transylvania. Paul Williams pulls double duty starring as the film's antagonist Swan and penning a dozen new tunes. All the entries are fantastic from "Goodbye, Eddie, Goodbye" from the Juicy Fruits to "Old Souls" performed by star Jessica Harper to Williams' own - and Black Saint fave - "The Hell of It". If the songs aren't your thing, then there's the acting, action and amazing set design. Just check out Swan's record shaped desk as he auditions new talent. Of course, the star of the film is the Phantom himself, a talented but tragic figure played by Finley. Too tame? Then check out Graham's Beef for silly satiric fun. AntiBirth (Fantasia 2016) - Interview Derek Tatum Dragon Con Horror Track - Episode 4 - HNR Extra 0

Each year the Fantasia International Film Festival descends upon Montreal, Quebec, Canada, providing genre fans with a copious amount of films, feature length and short films alike. This year Gruesome Magazine will be covering a number of the films being presented at the 2016 festival. Tonight, Thomas Mariani joins Doc Rotten to discuss one of those films, the body horror gore-fest from writer/director Danny Perez, ANTIBIRTH.

Interviewed this week is Derek Tatum, the director of Dragon*Con Horror Track. Taking place in Atlanta, Georgia over the holiday weekend of September 2 - 5, 2016, Dragon*Con is one of the largest and longest running conventions on the east coast. The convention which attracts attendance numbers in tens of thousands, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Derek is championing horror at the fantasy and sci-fi heavy convention by leading the horror track more towards film and TV. He joins Doc and Thomas to share what the convention has planned to thrill horror fans this year.

REVIEW: AntiBirth (Fantasia 2016)

Look out The Brood. Step aside It's Alive. Brundlefly has nothing on Natasha Lyonne as Lou in Danny Perez' phenomenal AntiBirth. The film is seedy, gritty, taking a dark, humorous, gory look into the life of an addict who gets into more trouble than she can handle. She is slipped an experimental drug which affects her in horrific, frightening ways. The ending contains scenes that are difficult to forget. Doc and Thomas dive into a unique offering from this years Fantasia International Film Festival.

INTERVIEW: Derek Tatum, Dragon*Con Horror Track

Doc and Thomas sit down with Derek Tatum to discuss the upcoming Dragon*Con Horror Track. Derek provides the skinny on the convention and the history of how the horror track finally grew out of a variety of other tracks, eventually bringing in horror movies to accent the literary tone the convention has promoted for 30 years. Derek is striving to elevate the track by bringing in horror film discussions from modern films to influential films from the past decades of horror.

The film is called The Mind's Eye and the influence of Scanners, Firestarter and their ilk is readily apparent. The Grue-crew dive into their thoughts about the film and their appreciation for the practical special effects. Thomas steps in with a surprise What Have You Been Watching segment topic, Pete's Dragon. A childhood Disney favorite gets a modern upgrade, providing Thomas a rare opportunity to praise a remake.

Feature Review: The Mind's Eye (2016)

Set in the Nineties, influenced by films from the Eighties the 2016 film The Mind's Eye revisits a familiar premise where psychokinetic powers cause anything from intense nose bleeds to explosive head splatter. The quote on the poster from Film School Rejects says it all, "The best Scanners sequel we never got." The film is passionately directed by Joe Bego and features Graham (Almost Human, Beyond the Gates) Skipper, Lauren Ashley (Jug Face) Carter, John (Darling) Speredakos, Larry Fessenden, Noah (Dead Girl, Some Kind of Hate) Segan and Matt (Contracted) Mercer.

What Have You Been Watching: Pete's Dragon (2016)

What's this? A Disney film? Yup. Thomas drops in with a review of Pete's Dragon, a remake of the 1977 live-action/animated fondly remembered film. It is not often Thomas has positive things to share about a remake of any sort, but here his is praising much of what is to be found in the David Lowery directed family film. And he also praises Wes Bentley - it may be the sign of the apocalypse.
