For this special edition of Horror News Radio, Doc Rotten sits down with Michael Steinberg to talk about all things found footage. Michael is the founder of Found Footage Critic and co-host of the Found Footage Files Podcast, quickly becoming the authority in found footage films online. His site now has over 500 found footage film in its database and he offers found footage films to watch onsite - both free and VOD. When it came time for the French found footage film festival (On Vous Ment Film Festival) to research films for potential inclusion in their line-up this Spring, they turned to Found Footage Critic to get the skinny on all the films in their sights. Michael joins Doc to discuss the site, the podcast, the film festival and found footage films in general. If you're a fan of HNR, you know this is right up Doc Rotten's alley and thrilled to have Michael on the podcast.
With the Found Footage Critic website, Michael has amassed an amazing resource for found footage film fans with over 500 films in the database. This number climbs every weeks with more than 300 additional films in his personal spreadsheet just waiting to be meticulously added to the listings. The site offers a great way for fans to rate their favorite found footage films and discover new offerings to watch. Speaking about that, if you use the "Watch" link in the site's navigation, you will find a number of found footage films right there to watch, many are video on demand (at an affordable price) or free! One of the more interesting things the site offers is a clear, concise definition of what a found footage is.
From the site: Found footage films are feature length movies, shorts, or webseries designed to have the look and feel of actual (non-fictional) filmed events that were lost and subsequently discovered and made available to the viewer. For a film to be considered as “found footage,” all of the cameras used to shoot the footage must have known sources within the film itself – i.e. all cameras are effectively props in the film. Based on a detailed analysis of 500 found footage films conducted by Found Footage Critic, it was determined that films within the genre historically employ a combination of one or more of the following cinematic approaches:
First person perspective (a.k.a. point of view) style – filmed/recorded from the perspective of the main character who is experiencing the event while holding the camera
Mockumentary (a.k.a. pseduo-documentary style) – filmed/recorded in the form of interviews and investigative reporting of the event
News Footage style – Footage from a professional news crew investigating the event
Surveillance Footage style – Footage from a stationary camera automatically filming/recording the event
Found Footage Files is a terrific podcast about ... you guessed it ... found footage films with hosts Boss Butcher and Michael Steinberg as they tackle a new found footage film each week. They provide great insight into the film and share their opinions about how successful the film may be. The podcast was also honored by Blumhouse.com recently as one of the Top 10 Horror Podcasts You Should Be Listening To Right Now.
When it came time to locate found footage films for its docket, the French Found Footage Film Festival "On Vous Ment Film Festival" turned to Found Footage Critic as the online resource for found footage films. The festival in Lyon, France is know locally more as a Mockumentary Film Festival and Michael gets into the specifics of the festival on the podcast. The festival is currently running a crowd funding campaign to collect the final funds needed to round out the festival: http://fr.ulule.com/festival-documenteur/.

The Grue-crew wildly disagree about the Asylum film ZOOMBIES but have the best time discussing the shlock-fest on this episode of HNR. The Black Saint is all about it, calling it one of his favorite for 2016 while Vixen, of all people, steals the night with the best quote ever: "So much awful packed Into 1 movie." The film is bonkers with zombie gorillas, koalas and giraffes - yes, zombie giraffes! When a flesh eating monkey throws bloody eyeballs at the camera like it's flinging monkey-poo, you know you have a winner.

For this special edition of Horror News Radio, foreign correspondent Joseph Perry (South Korea) joins Doc Rotten to discuss SQFFT, a horror film festival Joseph recently attended in Nagoya, Japan. The festival is unique in a variety of ways from the films it presents to the film makers behind them to the venue itself. Joseph dives into 10 short horror films that caught his attention. They range from a psycho-killer piece set in the Seventies to a Gothic period piece from Australia to science fiction - horror blend from Canada. And so much more. He also shares some fun stories about the venue that could only happen at SQFFT.
Scream Queen Filmfest Tokyo (SQFFT) is "a film festival dedicated to showcase and promote female filmmakers in the horror genre." Launched in 2013 and held annually in Tokyo with tour screenings around Japan throughout the year, including Osaka and the Nagoya tour stops. Joseph attended the one in Nagoya. The call for submissions is now open for 4th annual edition, running October 22-28, 2016 at Uplink Factory theater in Tokyo. Check out the website at http://www.sqfft.jp/, their Facebook account at http://www.facebook.com/ScreamQueenFilmfestTokyo, and their Twitter @SQFFT.
The Grue-crew dive into a pair of horror films on VOD and streaming on Netflix. First up is the Blumhouse feature HUSH from director Mike Flanagan. "You have one choice, boy: sex or the saw. Sex is, well... nobody knows. But the saw... the saw is family." - this dialog from Texas Chainsaw Massacre II illustrates the different take on the Sawyer family director Tobe Hooper has in mind for the sequel to grimy drive-in hit from 1974. Chop-Top joins Drayton and Leatherface as they encounter a pair ready for their blood rampage in DJ Stretch Brock and Lieutenant 'Lefty' Enright. Thomas Mariani and Doc Rotten tackle another gruesome horror film from the 1980s.
Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 81 – Texas Chainsaw Massacre II (1986)
A dozen years after the original film changed the face of horror, Tobe Hooper returns to Texas enlisting L.M. Kit Carson to script a tale of gruesome horror and the darkest of humor while the Godfather of Gore, Tom Savini, is on board to supply the bloody special effects. Bill Moseley turns in a career defining performance as Chop-Top while Bill Johnson provides a softer but no less deadly side to Leatherface as he falls for the DJ who recorded their latest kill. Caroline Williams plays Stretch who fights to the bitter end to survive the Sawyer family giving horror the most versatile scream queen ever. Dennis Hopper has Stretch's back as Lefty Enright, a driven Lieutenant hell-bent on eradicating the family responsible for a slew of murders including the death of his nephew, Franklin. Gory, hilarious, exhilarating and unique, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II is one of the few horror films released to theaters with an NC-17 rating (or unrated). NC Director Christopher G. Moore joins Thomas and Doc to discuss the epic chainsaw battles in this 1986 under-appreciated classic.
Director Karyn Kusama (Jennifer's Body) returns with a surprisingly effective and engrossing horror thriller titled THE INVITATION. Logan Marshall-Green and Emayatzy Corinealdi star as a couple drawn into a mysterious series of events at a dinner party with old friends -- and some new ones. Fan favorite character actor John Carroll Lynch is on hand to keep things exciting...and bloody. The Grue-crew share their thoughts and make recommendations.

"You haven't seen Kung fu until you've seen the 7 BROTHERS and 1 SISTER take DRACULA" - the US tagline for Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires promises a mishmash of horror, kung-fu and blacksploitation with the alternate title The 7 Brothers meet Dracula. However, this cult-class Hammer film is now known and loved under its original title and without the cuts and edits the US version suffered. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode 33 – Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974)
Horror aficionado Bill Mulligan joins Decades of Horror to tackle another Hammer film from the Seventies, Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires. This film, one of Hammer's last, may be the studio's most bizarre film as they team up with China's Shaw Brothers to blend their Gothic horror with kung-fu action. Peter Cushing is back as Professor Van Helsing but Christopher Lee is no where to be seen as Dracula. Instead, we are treated to John Forbes-Robertson taking up the role in the only Hammer Dracula appearance that does not have Lee as the Lord of the Undead. David Chiang as Hsi Ching and his Kung-fu siblings join Van Helsing and his son to take on the 7 Golden Vampire providing the film with fangs, blood, boobies and big action battles galore. "He gave his critics a bloody and violent taste of their own medicine!" - the tagline for Theatre of Blood promises murder and mayhem the only way horror icon Vincent Price knows how with wit and horror. The legendary actor stars as Edward Kendal Sheridan Lionheart, a Shakespearean actor shamed to the point of suicide by a London circle of critics. Little did they know, he would return to exact his revenge. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode 32 – Theatre of Blood (1973)
Much like the Dr. Phibes movies from the previous two years, Theatre of Blood from 1972 is a violent and bloody revenge caper with a dark sense of humor also starring Vincent Price. Lionhart is set on getting his revenge and he has his targets set on the nine critics that defamed him. Price has a blast in the Douglas Hickox directed feature where he dons a variety of costumes and characters while waxing poetic with famous Shakespearean dialog. While he's at it, Price also hatches elaborate ways to dispatch his victims based on the deaths in those famous plays. Lots to discuss as Doc and The Black Saint dive one of the Black Saint's favorite Price performances.

Episode 31 – Grizzly (1976)
For episode 31 of Decades of Horror, Doc Rotten and the Black Saint dive into the campy, gruesome fun of Grizzly and all its gory, silly goodness. The film holds the record of being the most successful independent motion picture of 1976, a distinction it held until Halloween surfaced two years later. Along with other goofy factoids and fond memories, we learn the film holds a special place in the Black Saint's heart as he shares watching the film with mother when the film debuted on TV a year or so later. Doc, of course, fixates on the many similarities between Grizzly and Jaws from the three main characters, the creature on the prowl story-line and the inclusion of actress Susan Backlinie. But, in the end, it really is all about that poster art. C'mon, seriously.

It is that time of year again, the beginning of the Film Festival season. The first up for Gruesome Magazine, Horror News Radio and the Monster Movie Podcast is the NEVERMORE FILM FESTIVAL in Durham, North Carolina held in February of 2016. We covered the festival last year with Paul Cardullo joining Doc Rotten to discuss the top films from the festival. Paul returns this year to once again look at the selection of film presenting during the festival's 17th year.
The festival mixes things up a bit this year by presenting far more animated and science fiction films during the weekend events, especially for a horror film festival. For the most part, this works in its favor. Except, the better horror films are hard to find with the animated features eclipsing the other genre related films on the schedule. The festival also presents a number of short horror film blocks with the kick-ass horror short KNOB GOBLINS from occasional HNR guest-host Christopher G. Moore being a highlight of the weekend.
The festival comes highly recommended from both Doc Rotten and Paul Cardullo. The Nevermore Film Festival is presented each February over the second weekend of the month. The festival runs from Friday through Sunday with multiple screens showing the selected films. The event is located at the Carolina Theater in Durham, North Carolina. We hope to see you there next year!

"Who are these unholy savages who hunt out their victims by sound alone?" - the tagline for Tombs of the Blind Dead (La Noche del Terror Ciego) from under-appreciated Spanish director Amando de Ossorio introduces the zombie-like terror of The Templar Knights. When a group of travelers stumble upon an abandoned, dilapidated castle, los Guerreros de Oriente rise from the grave to drink their blood. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode3 – Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971)
Excited to discuss the film he refers to as "Revenge from Planet Ape", Bill Mulligan returns to guest-host this episode of Decades of Horror. Joining us for the first time is fan-turned-guest-host Jerry Chandler, writer for Needless Things. Bill and Jerry quickly reveals they are huge fans of Tombs of the Blind Dead as they join Doc and the Black Saint in recapping and reviewing La Noche del Terror Ciego. Fun things that come up, in addition to the Planet of the Apes marketing ploy, is a debate if the creatures in the film are zombies, vampires or raging ghosts. A familiar but often forgotten gem, Tombs of the Blind Dead proves to be a terrific topic to discuss thanks to the Grue-believers from Gruesome Magazine who helped select the topic for this episode.

The adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith parody hit Pride and Prejudice and Zombies stumbles into theaters this weekend making barely a dent in the box office. While the horror-fied version of the Jane Austin classic was a hit with Vixen and Doc Rotten, it did not impress Thomas Mariani and the Black Saint much at all. With Dave stuck in the middle, the discussion gets lively examining the good, the bad and the ugly.
Dave launches the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with information about 10 Cloverfield Lane, John Carpenter and The Exorcist. Also a reminder this week about the forthcoming book from Gruesome Magazine written by the Grue-crew called Gruesome Magazine presents Horror Films from 1980.
