Captain Doyle is not the only one who changes this week in Gone Smooth. The show opens with Eichhorst doing his best Anton Phibes impersonation putting on his 'human' face. But it is the visual shocker of rock star Gabriel Bolivar's finale reveal that leaves the Fan podcast horrified. Doc and Dave have lots to discuss as the recap episode 3 of The Strain.

The second episode of The Strain improves on its character building skills as the horror takes a back seat allowing Eph and Nora to get a good amount of screen time. There is still time for horror and grue however with Gabe liking blood off the floor, Eph taking a close look at the gross-looking parasitic worms and Emma the baby vampire snacks while taking a bath. Doc and Dave have lots to discuss as the recap episode 2 of The Strain.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014) picks up one year after the Purge presented last year except this entry follows Frank Grillo as Seargent Leo Barnes, a man on a mission to purge but runs into two sets of characters in deep doo doo deciding to help them survive the night. Capitalizing on the premise of The Purge, Anarchy takes the action to the streets to the satisfaction of the fans but forgets to bring characterization along with it. Hollow? Maybe. Action packed? You bet. Check out the review from the HNR grue-crew.

Dave ramps up the horror news of the week with bloody bits and pieces about GrizzlyThe Overlook Motel and Mad Max Fury Road. Joseph Perry is now the HNR man-on-the-street in South Korea at the PiFan film festival with his reviews of Dead Snow Red vs Dead, Blood Glacier and other genre films.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week!  The show also contains Stump the Stain as recorded live at MonsterCon toy and comic convention in Greenville, South Carolina July 18-20, 2014.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
Thomas reminds his co-hosts that all but Vixen hated on The Purge last year giving the film a screaming 1 out of 5 before the grue-crew jump into their review of the its 2014 sequel, The Purge: Anarchy. Dave perhaps says it the best, "For a film with 'Anarchy' in its title, where is all the Anarchy?" Frank Castle...uh...Frank Grillo, rather, takes to the streets on Purge Night handing out violence, gore and death, but does the action hold enough interest to elevate the film and the now successful franchise.

What Have You Been Watching: PiFan by Joseph Perry
From South Korea, attending the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, Horror News Radio man-on-the-street reported Joseph Perry brings short reviews from a handful of genre films presented early in the festival: Dead Snow: Dead Vs RedWhat We Do in the Shadows, Blood Glacier (The Station), Darkness by Day, When Animals Dream, Djinn   Zero Theorem.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) is the best example of a sequel done right! It perfectly expands and extends the marvelous Rise of the Planet of the Apes and intelligently provides the audience with a remarkable blend of action, drama, conflict and spectacle. The grue-crew gather to discuss the film and push for recognition of Andy Sirkis' Oscar-worthy performance as Caesar.

Dave ramps up the news of the week with reaction to the teaser trailer for Horns and news of Suburban Gothic. Thomas shares his mixed review of The Strain in this week's What You Have Been Watching segment while Doc champions the show and Santos despises it. Oh, the drama!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Director Matt Reeves accomplishes with the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes what most other sequels never even approach, he makes a better film. Empires Strikes Back, The Godfather II, the list that includes these films is incredibly short. To no one's surprise, Doc, Dave, Santos, Thomas and Vixen all praise the film for its remarkable effects, it's incredible performance from Andy Sirkis and it's deceptively simple story that is thoroughly engrossing, compelling and fascinating. Check out this great discussion.

Horror News of the Week for 07/14/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news the first teaser trailer from Alex Aja's adaptation of Joe Hill's Horns. Then the grew-crew have issues with the changes to Robert Englund's "final" public appearance in Freddy make-up from A Nightmare on Elm Street. Speaking of Matt Reeves, Dave reveals his intentions to film The Invisible Woman. Director Richard Bates (Excision) is back in the news with the trailer for his upcoming film Suburban Gothic. The El Rey Network TV show, From Dusk Till Dawn, is getting its own haunted house treatment within this year's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios theme parks.

What Have You Been Watching: The Strain (FX - Season 1 - 7/13/2014)
Thomas chimes in with his opinions on the hit FX television adaptation of The Strain from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and showrunner Carlton Cuse. Thomas provides a mixed review harping on the weak character development but enjoying the more graphic horror elements. Santos pretty much poops on the whole show while Doc suggests everyone listen to he and Dave reviewing each episode on the Horror News TV The Strain Fan Podcast.

Join us this week as we revisit and remember the original Planet of the Apes franchise, the first five classic sci-fi films. Planet of the Apes (1968), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). Relive the the gripping stories, the incredible make-up and the memorable lines such as "Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" It's all here along with a healthy dose of love for Roddy McDowall (Cornelius and Caesar).

"Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death." - Cornelius

Thomas Mariani returns once again to join Doc Rotten to celebrate classic monster movies from the past. To examine the Planet of the Apes films, The Black Saint (Santo Ellin Jr.) from HorrorNews.Net steps in to round out the panel of horror and sci-fans examining the original 5 films about George Taylor, Zira, Cornelius, Dr. Zaius and the lovely Nova.

The original Planet of the Apes (1968) represents a remarkable achievement in sci-fi films with its incredible make-up for the apes that populate the desolate future of mankind. Shocking for its time, the film is now a classic with its scenes, characters and lines at the top of the minds of audiences and fans world wide. Before Star Wars and perhaps even more than Star Trek, Planet of the Apes sparks a marketing a machine of sequels and merchandise that would delight kids and adults of the early Seventies. Roddy McDowall is the star of four of the five films and the TV series from 1974 where he would play three distinctly separate simian characters. From Planet of the Apes to Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the original franchise is a must-see collection of films. In preparation for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), Doc, Thomas and The Black Saint revisit the films and their impact and influence on the Monster Movie Podcast.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014) is the latest horror film from director Scott (Sinister) Derrickson about a cop (Eric Bana) who discovers a strange killer who may be possessed. Dave is ecstatic that the HNR crew is finally getting back to a full-fledged theatrical horror film; however, the box office results do not support that the audience was interested in seeing a blend of The Exorcist and Seven.

Dave ramps up the news of the week with The GuestABCs of Death 2 and Sharknado 2: The Second One while Santos continues with HNR's popular segment of the show, Stump the Saint, featuring horror trivia questions provided by you, the Horror News Radio listener! Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
The discussion of Deliver Us From Evil begins on a solid notes with Santos giving it a 3 star review but it quickly runs afoul as the rest chime in less and less favorable experiences. The film from Scott Derrickson is supposedly based on true events where a cop and a priest perform an exorcism on a possessed criminal. The film is atmospheric and looks great but the script is uneven and the acting is a mixed bag with Eric Bana's New York accent amusing Santos and Thomas.

Horror News of the Week for 07/07/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news of  The Guest from Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett getting a September 2014 release date. Next up is disturbing news about The ABCs of Death 2 where the Soska Sisters (directors of one of the 26 chapters) released a graphic shot from the film which caused quite a stir on Facebook and other social media outlets. Dave shares the latest found footage trailer with Doc for the film The Expedition. And then follows it up with the trailer for the schlocky Sharnado 2: The Second One. Last up, Dave shares the alien cookie and other tasty genre treats from Christine McConnell, The Horror Baker.

What Have You Been Watching: Snowpiercer (2013)
Thomas steps up to discuss the much delayed film from director Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer. The hardest working man in podcasting champions the film siting its cinematography, direction and tone. Santos, however, who also saw the film, shares a different story. Gasp!

Stump the Saint for 07/07/2014
Santos Ellin Jr. is a horror historian, leading the country in horror trivia on the Quiz Up online game. He steps up to challenge you, the HNR listener to stump with trivia. Thus, Stump the Saint is born. The segment continues with three challenging questions from Paul Knoop, Floor Hockey Josh and the crew behind the Monster Movie Podcast. This crazy film begins with a heist where the thieves are dressed as Jesus Christ, a green toy soldier and even Spongebob Squarepants, Insanity! The script follows two of them on the run with a 10 year old boy in tow. The plan is to escape Spain by traveling into France, but one town stands in the way: Zugarramurdi. This town is, of course, populated solely by witches, and this coven has their eyes set on the our lively groups of crooks. Doc, Thomas and Santos highly recommend the film.

The Human Race (2013) from director Paul Hough spins a combination of Battle Royale and Saw on its ears creating a terrifying tale that has Santos Ellin Jr. and Vixen singing its praises while Doc and Thomas are far less impressed. The Human Race (2014)
"If you are lapped twice, you die. If you step off the path, you die. If you touch the grass, you will die!" The tag line sets up the story at its base, 80 strangers from a single city block are transported to a mysterious track where they must keep running to survive. The Human Race thrills Santos and Vixen with its gory thrills (exploding heads!) and interesting characters while Thomas is frustrated by the script, the redundant kills and the overplayed soundtrack. The HNR grue-crew go at, love it or hate it, the discussion is lively.

Over the past decade, films continue to mine the wealth of material originating from the comic book world, even horror. The Walking Dead, anyone? But what does it take to translate that material into a screenplay that will attract a studio and a director or find actors such as Bill Oberst Jr, Naomi Grossman, Zach Galligan and Brian Thompson to sign on and promote? He shares how producers first approached him about the comic and what it took to develop a script that would excite interested parties into joining his cause. The podcast takes a loving and hilarious look back at Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond Stanz and Dr. Egon Spengler as they are joined by Winston Zeddemore to save Dana Barrett (and, yes, Louis Tully) from the world conquering Gozer.

This episode also marks the return of co-host Thomas Mariani who first visited the show one year ago. Coincidence? We think not. Wha? C'mon, just play along here.

"I'm worried, Ray. It's getting crowded in there and all my data points to something big on the horizon." - Egon.

"What do you mean, big?" - Winston.

"Well, let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area. Based on this morning's sample, it would be a Twinkie... thirty-five feet long, weighing approximately six hundred pounds." - Egon

"That's one big Twinkie." - Winston.

It is lines like this and the chemistry between the film's stars, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramos , that solidify the importance and impact of Ghostbusters. The film is known for instantly conquering the Summer of 1984 with its catchy (and later controversial) theme song, it's fun jovial attitude and its delightful scares and thrills. Sigourney Weaver is breathtaking as Dana Barrett instantly winning Venkman's heart - and the audiences' as well. And let's not forget Slimer, Gozer, the Terror Dogs and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Thomas and Doc relive every moment, every thrill as they celebrate the film's 30th anniversary. Join them in the excitement.

The film is out and killing it at the box office to cheers and jeers. SFX Artist Vincent Guastini joins the regular crew to review and recap the film tackling the plot, the design of Godzilla, the other kaiju and the epic battle of San Francisco.

"I am enchanted ... and ...terrified." Tonight is the night, the confrontation between Hannibal Lecter and Mason Verger with Will Graham caught in the middle. And Hannibal does not disappoint in what is quite possibly the best show of the season featuring Michael Pitt giving what should be an award winning performance. The entire sequence between Hannibal and Mason while Mason is under the influence is incredibly entertaining and has co-hosts, Thomas, Dave, Doc and Christopher, smiling from ear to ear.

The penultimate episode of NBC's hit horror tv show Hannibal is brilliant. Director Christopher G. Moore is back to guide show hosts Thomas, Dave and Doc through each and every conversation in Tome-Wan between Hannibal and Will and Hannibal and Mason and Jack and Will. Thomas is thrilled with the Mason line "I have a taste and consistency that's similar to a a chicken gizzard. I'm full of myself!" while Doc likes the whole bit about "Eat my nose?" Or it may be Mason's confession that he planned to feed Will to the pigs or Hannibal's gaping glance at Mason sticking his father's knife into Hannibal's chair. The show is full of little nuggets - incredible television.

As children of the Seventies, The Black Saint and Doc Rotten grew up watching Godzilla films in the theaters and on TV, watching the King of the Monsters destroys Tokyo, fights King Ghidorah & King King and save the planet from invading aliens. The kaiju is mythical, monstrous and magical to the heart of these two young horror fans. Doc and Saint spend the next 90 minutes revisiting and reliving the entire Godzilla library picking their favorites, remembering when the first saw the classics and what they thought of the classic Man-in-Suit masterpieces as they grew older and rediscovered them.
