The Grue-crew climb into the dreamlike world of Rodney Ascher's documentary about sleep paralysis, THE NIGHTMARE (2015). Following a small group of subjects relating their experiences of horrifying nightmares and being frozen in their beds, unable to move, unable to scream, sometimes unable to breathe. Paired with this are a series of reenactments that are, at times, as scary as any horror film.

Dave dishes a new plate of HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK with the news about NBC's HannibalParanormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Cobragator. Yes, Cobragator! Thomas and The Black Saint dive into the Pixar film Inside Out in the What Have You Been Watching segment. We also have an incredible interview with Joe Ripple, the promoter of Scares that Care Weekend II.

Interview: Joe Ripple, promoter of Scares that Care Weekend II

The man behind the genre based charity organization, SCARES THAT CARE joins the Grue-crew to discuss the origin of Scares That Care, the evolution of the charity events and the beginning of the horror conventions, Scares that Care Weekend II, held in Williamsburg, Virginia in July 2015. Review: The Nightmare (2015)

The synopsis is simple, "A look at a frightening condition that plagues thousands; sleep paralysis." and so is the approach to tackling a fairly complicated subject matter. For THE NIGHTMARE, director Rodney Ascher sticks to sharing the experiences of a small gathering of poor souls who each suffer from sleep paralysis and horrifying nightmares. The Grue-crew chime in with their reactions to this unique and challenging genre documentary.

What Have You Been Watching: Inside Out

Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint plead with horror fans to take a look at Pixar's latest film regardless of the fact it is far from horror. They both proclaim the animated feature, INSIDE OUT, to be the best film of 2015 thus far. Listen to why.

Fascinating. Lyrical in its dialog, this episode is patiently weaving its tale of Hannibal and Will Graham, each step carefully placed. The third episode of Hannibal Season 3 challenges its audience with its leisurely pace and Shakespearean approach to dialog. The visuals are stunning. The violence is quick and merciless. What lies below the surface, between the lines, is far more interesting. This is the first impression episode for Season 3 Episode 3 of Hannibal called Secondo.

"It is as if God created the Devil and gave him… Jaws." - trailer for JAWS (1975). Steven Spielberg's classic Universal horror film is considered one of Hollywood's finest achievements in terror. The cast is phenomenal, a trio of actors that will never be equaled: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 19 – Jaws (1975)
Part 2 w/ Bill Mulligan, Christopher G. Moore & Alan G. Kelly.

Doc Rotten is joined by three film makers to discuss the making, the challenges and the achievements of the timeless classic, JAWS. Join Doc and his friends Bill Mulligan, Christopher G. Moore and Alan G. Kelly as they relive the film recounting some of the best scenes in the film - some of the best scenes in cinema history. They discuss how the tension is built with camera angles, cinematography, composition and music. The scary scenes are dissected, Quint's demise and Ben Gardner's jump scare. Alan and Chris reveal how the "Vertigo" dolly shot was done to accent Sheriff Brody's witnessing the death of the Kintner boy. And of course, no discussion of JAWS can go without mentioning the Indianapolis speech.

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin’ back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We’d just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes.

Didn’t see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin’ from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn’t know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn’t even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin’ by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin’ and hollerin’ and sometimes that shark he go away… but sometimes he wouldn’t go away.

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn’t even seem to be livin’… ’til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin’ and your hollerin’ those sharks come in and… they rip you to pieces.

You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don’t know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin’, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson’s mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he’d been bitten in half below the waist.

At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol’ fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Review: Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

The Black Saint is known for being very public about his negative opinion about looking forward to seeing this film. Imagine the Grue-crew's surprise when he reveals he enjoyed the latest chapter in the Insidious franchise, INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3. The story may be about the new family (Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott) and their supernatural encounters, but the film belongs to Lin Shaye's Elise. Scary with new threats without leaving familiar haunted faces behind, the film offers scares and shocks that offer a fun Summer horror film.

What Have You Been Watching: We Are Still Here (2015)

Ted Geoghegan's first full-length horror feature, WE ARE STILL HERE, is garnering rave reviews online and in film festivals - and new fans. The gory haunted house feature continues to get high praises from the HNR Grue-crew - well, most of them anyway. Uh. Oh. The biggest shock is the amount of blood shed throughout the film. It is great to see Barbara Crampton in another horror film along with familiar faces Larry Fassenden and Monte Markham.

The first episode of Hannibal season 3 focuses entirely upon Dr. Lecter and Bedelia Du Maurier in Paris, France setting up a new life and tasting new dishes. We get some more interaction, via flashback, with Abel Giddeon (Eddie Izzard) as Hannibal slowly feeds him to himself. In another flashback, we are treated to a quick vision of Zachary Quinto and how he relates to Bedelia's past. The show continues to play with the cannibal aspects of the title character's impulses with dialog such as “Clearly, you found him as distasteful as I did,” Anthony Dimmond smiles. “On the contrary,” Hannibal quietly responds.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson stars in this year's apokalyptic CGI-laden disaster film, SAN ANDREAS from director Brad Peyton and writer Carlton Cuse. Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Giamatti, Ioan Gruffudd, Hugo Johnstone-Burt and Art Parkinson support the special effects and the Rock as Super-Dad. The film is stupid in so many ways but manages to be awesome regardless of the most insane destruction and impossible feats of heroism...ever. The Black Saint proclaims The Rock is a god.

Dave dishes a new plate of HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK with the sad news about the passing of Betsy Palmer, the possible casting of Dwayne Johnson as Jack Burton and the retirement of legendary make-up artist Rick Baker. Also, Joseph Perry returns with a third report from the  Jeonju International Film Festival with a new set of horror movie reviews from abroad.

Review: San Andreas (2015)

When the earth shakes rattling San Francisco in San Andreas, they will feel it on the East Coast. Or so warns Paul Giamatti. The amount of destruction and implausible effects and disaster is exhausting eye candy. The Rock manages to squeeze out a tear or two as he fights to save his daughter, Alexandria Daddario, from a building sinking into tsunami soaked streets. The grue-crew all realize that the movie is preposterous but cannot deny the film's appeal and entertainment value. The film is fun.

Blumhouse steps in to wrangle control of Eli Roth's The Green Inferno announcing the film's release...finally. "Anti-shark cage. You go inside the cage? Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water. Our shark." - Quint to Hooper in JAWS (1975).

Episode 18 – Jaws (1975)
Part 1 w/ The Black Saint, Doc Rotten, Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani
with Special Guest-Host Bill Oberst, Jr.

Joining The Black Saint and Doc Rotten are joined by their Horror News Radio colleagues, Thomas Mariani and Dave Dreher, to dive into the waters off of Amity Island as Sheriff Martin Brody, Bartholomew M. Quint and Matt Hooper battle a 25 tons of man-eating machine, a great white shark named "Bruce." Just to make sure the shark does not swim up and bite us in the ass, we have a very special guest-host joining us to discuss seeing JAWS for the first time back in 1975, the extraordinary and prolific actor Bill Oberst, Jr.

There is a creature alive today that has survived millions of years of evolution without change, without passion and without logic. It lives to kill; a mindless eating machine. It will attack and devour anything. It is as if God created the Devil and gave him… Jaws.

Review: Poltergeist (2015)

The remake that no one wanted - except maybe Doc - finally makes its way into the theaters this weekend. It's Poltergeist, baby. To everyone's surprise no one really hates the film but the film fails to make a lasting impression. The grue-crew tear apart the Sam Raimi produced 2015 version of the Spielberg/Hooper classic. Clowns, trees and angry ghosts now go face to face with Jared Harris. #ThisHouseIsClean

Airport from 1970 was not the first "disaster film" but it was a monster box office hit that ignited a series of disaster films throughout the Seventies until the spoof Airplane (1980) would put it all to rest 10 years later. With the release of San Andreas (2015), Decades of Horror '70 takes a look at four of the major shakers and movers in this star studded sub-genre: Airport (1970), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Earthquake (1974) and The Towering Inferno (1974). To the Black Saint's joy, MAGGIE finally mixes action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger with zombie cinema only to find that the film delivers a more introspective look into the transformation from human to ghoul and its effect on the family dynamic instead. His dreams of a killer Arnie vs Zombie action flick are crushed. Vixen doesn't care and loves the film anyway. Ah, the drama.

William Marshall returns as Prince Mamuwalde in SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM (1973). Decades of Horror return to early Blacksploitation horror with the AIP sequel to their hit vampire flick Blacula (1972). Along for the ride are Richard Lawson and Pam Grier. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 15 – Scream Blacula Scream (1973)

The director of Count Yorga, Vampire and The Return of Count Yorga, Bob Kelljan , resurrects Dracula' Soul Brother for Scream, Blacula, Scream. "The Black Prince of Shadows Stalks the Earth Again!" promises the tag line while The Black Saint argues the title suggests a far different film. Doc defends the movie enjoying the inclusion of voodoo and more vampirism while the Black Saint insists it is as slow as molasses. Regardless William Marshall owns the roles and keeps the film alive with another wonderful performance.

Some fun dialog:
Pimp, "Your bread, man, all of it! Or are we gonna have to become anti-social and kick your ass?"
Blacula, "I'm sorry, I don't have any 'bread' on me, and as for 'kicking my ass' I'd strongly suggest you give it careful consideration before trying"

Review: Ex Machina (2015)

Screenwriter Alex Garland steps behind the camera to direct Ex Machina pitting Oscar Isaac against Domhnall Gleeson with the fate of Alicia Vikander's Ava. The film challenges the nature of humanity running a stunning parallel to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The movie also successfully pits The Black Saint against Doc Rotten, Thomas Mariani and Vixen in whether the film is one of the year's best films or a dull waste of time.

Nazi Zombies, Alan Ormsby makeup design, Peter Cushing and John Caradine: it is a recipe for greatness. Found footage gets anti-social in the new theatrical release, Unfriended. The film hits for its target audience but leaves the Grue-crew a little cold. The same cannot be said for Netflix's Marvel TV series Daredevil however. Marvel is no longer content with DC holding the best in TV moniker as they best everything on the small screen with their gritty superhero drama.

Review: Unfriended (2015)

Director Levan Gabriadze and writer Nelson Greaves team up with Blumhouse to usher in a new age in horror where a vengeful spirit attacks her prey through Skype chat in the latest theatrical horror release Unfriended. Told entirely from the laptop screen of the lead protagonist, the film weaves its tale through video chat screens, text messages. Facebook posts and Youtube videos. The Grue-crew wrestle with the concept versus the execution in deciding if the film is successful or a flop.

What Have You Been Watching: Daredevil (2015)

Watch out DC, Marvel is stealing your television thunder with its latest hit Daredevil available now on Netflix. The show stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson and Debra Ann Woll as Karen Page. But it is Vincent D'Onofrio who rises above the flames as Wilson Fisk, the villain often known as Kingpin. He kicks ass, literally.
