What Have You Been Watching: The Atticus Institute (2015) 

Seemingly out of nowhere comes a small, independent found footage possession thriller called The Atticus Institute. The film is far better than most of the wretched garbage that gets dumped into the theaters in January and yet it is relegated to VOD and DVD. This film is a rare treat, a movie that treats its subject matter with imagination and respect creating a thrilling and engaging horror tale. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten both join in to champion this early 2015 favorite.

Ever since The Black Saint put The Scarehouse on his top 10 list of 2014, everyone's curiosity is abuzz on what this film is all about. Thanks to director Gavin Michael Booth, the Grue-Crew is now prepared to give their thoughts on this independent horror feature just in time for it to be released on DVD and VOD. Straight up, the gang reacts favorably to the film praising its script, production and the two leads. The Scarehouse gets an HNR recommendation.

Review: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (2014) 

The final film in The Hobbit trilogy picks up directly where The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug left off with the dragon hammering down on Lake Town where Luke Evans takes down the beast. "Below the crypt lies death's waiting room...the Vault of Horror." Milton Subotsky and Amicus return with another horror anthology The Vault of Horror, a direct follow up to Tales from the Crypt (1972). Roy Ward Baker steps in to take the director reigns from Freddie Francis bringing his own distinct but similar style with improved angles and composition with a more humorous tint. The blu ray also brings the film to the States for the first time uncut.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode 9 – Vault of Horror (1973) 

The Vault of Horror brings five new tales to the big screen inspired by and adapted from the EC horror comics from the 50's, four from Tales from the Crypt and one from Shock SuspenStories. The stories include "Midnight Mess," "The Neat Job," "This Trick'll Kill You," "Bargain in Death" and "Drawn & Quartered" with a collection of character actors from the 70s: Terry-Thomas, Daniel Massey, Anna Massey, Curd Jurgans, Michael Craig, Glynis Johns and Tom Baker. This release marks the first time the film is presented uncut where at least four scenes are restored. While the film does not feature a Crypt Keeper nor Amicus anthology mainstay Peter Cushing, the film does continue the revenge themed terror and horror that makes these films so special. "Everything that makes life worth leaving!"

Horror News of the Week for 12/08/2014 

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with the announcement that Stephen King's It will be heading into production the summer of 2015. That's right, Pennywise returns! The Rock makes the closest thing to Earthquake (1974) 2.0 with the disaster extravaganza of 2015, San Andreas. The King Kong related film, Kong: Skull Island moves its release date to 2016 and cast the terrific characters actor J.K. Simmons. Rumors from Sony suggest they may cross the 22 Jump Street property with their Men in Black franchise. Just in time for the holidays, take solace in the horror short Something Under the Christmas Tree.

Peter Cushing as Arthur Grimsdyke leaves a horrifying Valentines card for his murderers in Poetic Justice, one of the fantastic stories in the classic Amicus Anthology film Tales from the Crypt (20172). Inspired by the EC Comics in the fifties, Milton Subotsky pens a memorable, creepy tome featuring a deadly Santa, an antique with a deadly touch, a maze of death and more.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Episode 8 – Tales from the Crypt (1972) 

Tales from the Crypt is not the first horror anthology, it is not even the first from the British film company Amicus, but it may be the best remembered - if not, it should be. Drawing inspiration directly from the horror comics two decades earlier, the film ties together five short tales with a wrap around story featuring the Crypt Keeper. The Black Saint and Doc recap and review each story praising Peter Cushing in Poetic Justice and the creative revenge found in Blind Alleys. The film is responsible for inspiring two sequels, Vault of Horror and From Beyond the Grave, a loving tribute from Stephen King and George Romero with Creepshow and an HBO television that elevated the Crypt Keeper to a modern horror icon.

The final theatrical horror film of 2014 is The Pyramid from director Gregory Levasseur featuring Ashley Hinshaw and Denis (American Horror Story) O'Hare. The film takes a small band of archaeologists and documentary film makers to the deserts of Egypt where they have discovered a three sided Pyramid on unknown origin. They venture into the apex of the mysterious man made marvel only to encounter the unholy horrors that lie beneath. The HNR grue crew review the film.

Review: The Pyramid (2014) 

Producer Alexandre Aja delivers dangerous mazes, flesh hungry Sphinx creature and Anubis in his latest film The Pyramid. While the film delivers a bevy of gory effects but fails to bring much scares or horror. While Doc and Vixen find enough to entertain them for the 89 minute run time, The Black Saint can't help but wonder why they remade As Above, So Below. Bwah hah hah.

What Have You Been Watching: Z Nation season finale 

Dave and Doc freely admit they have been following Asylum's Z Nation airing on SyFy. Despite the low budget and cheesy approach to the show, Z Nation is consistently fun, in their opinion. The Black Saint, Thomas and Vixen refuse to believe them. So sad. Doc shares his thoughts on the finale of the first season of Z Nation.

Toho announced this week that they will be returning to their hottest property Godzilla in 2016. Jamie Lee Curtis is joining Emma Roberts in Ryan Murphy's upcoming 2015 horror comedy Scream Queens. It appears that Mrs. Voorhees is returning to the Friday the 13th franchise come November 13, 2015. Tom Holland and Tim Sullivan announce TnT Presents featuring a re-release of Child's Play.

"She Is Young, She Is Beautiful, She is Next...She's Living in the Gateway to Hell" The tag line for The Sentinel (1977) gives away the darkest secret of the big budgeted, big release horror film from Michael Winner based on the hit novel from Jeffrey Konvitz. The cast is insane and the effects are from the legendary Dick Smith.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Review: Starry Eyes (2014) 

Writer/Directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer deliver their crowd funded, highly reviewed, low budget feature film Starry Eyes which examines a young woman's desire to become a star and the crazy lengths she will go to get what she wants. The intimate script mixes elements of Faust, body horror and slasher film tropes into an interesting but uneven film. Alex Essoe is captivating in the starring role.

Review: The Guest (2014) 

HNR favorites Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett follow up their film, You're Next, with The Guest about a mysterious stranger who arrives at the home of a family dealing with the loss of the oldest son who died overseas serving his country. Dan Stevens stars as David who has shocking and horrifying secrets. The film is energetic, exciting and bloody. It may become a cult classic.

What Have You Been Watching: Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014) 

Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint complain that the latest Katniss feature, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, is overly padded and dull. The Black Saint is particularly concerned that splitting the final book into two features is solely a money grab by the studios and may ultimately sour the franchise. Does Thomas agree?

The first is a surprisingly impressive Jurassic World while the other is a little film named Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. Oh, man! Gravy! More classic monster news with ITV bringing an action packed version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to the small screen. Krumpas is coming to the big screen from Trick R Treat director, Michael Dougherty. Goosebumps is coming in 2015 and this weeks reveals the first shots of the variety of monsters in the film. Nature runs amok comes to TV with The Zoo.

Review: The ABCs of Death 2 (2014)
