Looking at the carnage of blood, flesh and bones scattered on the gore-scarred ice, Will concludes "It's not an animal. It's a man who wants to be an animal." Episode 9 for NBC's hit television show Hannibal skirts the supernatural with a man who becomes a beast in Shiizakana. The show dances with the slasher formula with gruesome gory results that have Thomas, Dave, Doc and special guest Christopher G. Moore rabid out this week's visual treats.

The coolest thing about episode 9 is Will turning the tables on Hannibal proving he is indeed master fisherman, bating and nearly hooking Dr. Lector. But don't be fooled, Hannibal has a few more tricks up his sleeve quickly stepping in to coach the killer-of-the-week to his next move - attacking Will Graham. Let's just say "Even Steven" and cut to the chase!

NBC's HANNIBAL trades in subtlety for bright red blood and gore this week as the dialog takes a minor pinch according to Thomas and guest co-host, director Christopher G. Moore.  Regardless, we are all treated to another marvelous, thrilling and engaging episode as we inch closer to that dramatic confrontation between Hannibal and Jack Crawford heavily hinted at during this season's opening shots. The anticipation is a killer.

Oculus (2014)
While Doc and Dave agree that Mike Flanagan's chiller Oculus works as a great introductory horror film for non-horror fans, or a great "date movie," Santos and Thomas are not as supportive. The review heats up as the two sides discuss the film's successes and failures. An irritated Santos wants nothing to do with it; however, Dave shares he and his wife enjoyed the film greatly - his wife, who rarely likes horror films, wants to see it again. The film is creepy, full of atmosphere with terrific performances from its cast providing the film with a captivating set up but a divisive conclusion. The film is garnering strong reviews outside of HNR as it comes in at number 3 in the weekend box office, grossing $12 million in the U.S.

Top 5 Killer Inanimate Objects in Horror Films
Jumping off the haunted mirror in Oculus, Thomas leaps in to collect his top 5 killer inanimate objects in horror films:

  • House (1977)
  • Rubber (2010)
  • Christine (1983)
  • Death Bed: The Bed That Eats People (1977)
  • Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Horror News of the Week for 04/14/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with Doc's request to check out the "Muto" roar of the opposing kaiju from Godzilla (2014). Thomas is curious about the rumors that Johnny Depp may be secretly starring in Kevin Smith's horror opus, Tusk (2015). Dave is horrified with the sudden and maddening closure of FearNet by Comcast. Boo. Hiss. The documentary Never Sleep Again is getting a book treatment. And Netflix announces the second season of Eli Roth's Hemlock Grove.

If you want him you'll have to kill him." is just one of the many highlights discussed in this week's podcast. Join your hosts Thomas Mariana, Dave Dreher and Doc Rotten as this week they welcome special guest, director Christopher G. Moore, a self-proclaimed super fan who brings his exciting insight into the fold and adds a new dimension to the discussion.

HORROR NEWS TV HANNIBAL FAN PODCAST
Episode 5  – Mukozuke

Episode five continues the shows trend of exposing us all to extraordinary imagery while still maintaining one of the best-written story lines on TV.  Last weeks cliffhanger is dealt with in short order and in spectacular fashion thrusting us into a story-line that is filled with twists, turns and shocks that in the end puts a major character into a situation we never imagined could happen so early in this riveting second season.  It all adds up to yet another extraordinary episode and leaves us all wondering what else Hannibal and the crew could possibly have in store for us next week.

As always we want your feedback so drop us a line at thomas@horrornewstv.com or dave@horrornewstv.com or docrotten@horrornewstv.com and we’ll talk next week as we continue to bring you our recipe for fear with HORROR NEWS TV HANNIBAL FAN PODCAST.

Doc Rotten and The Black Saint continue their examination of the horror films of the Seventies with David Cronenberg's The Brood featuring Oliver Reed, Samantha Eggar and Art Hindle. The director injects a ton of personal subtext into the script causing The Black Saint to believe Cronenberg may be exorcising some personal demons with The Brood. The film, while containing its signature shock ending, is a sign of the kind of films Cronenberg would dive into in the Eighties with Scanners, Videodrome and The Fly. Doc and The Black Saint take a look at an early entry into the body horror subgenre.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 2 – The Brood (1979)

Decades of Horror 1970s is a monthly podcast taking a look back at the genre films that shaped the co-hosts' love for horror films at an early age. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten re-examine films from the most diverse and bizarre decade of horror in the genre's history, from the decline of Hammer Horror films to the rise of summer blockbusters to exploitations films and grindhouse. Now that his celebrated and award winning short horror-comedy, Foodie,  festival circuit run is complete, director Christopher G. Moore is working on his next short, Disengaged. Every independent effort is ripe with its own challenges from production to casting talent to selecting music to editing to releasing. Each step requires forethought and planning; some things go as planned, others require the film maker to be flexible prepared to scramble at a moments notice to plan B. And many independent features, long form or short, also continually deal with the price tag, paying for the film itself - financing the dream.

Welcome to another episode of The Future of Horror, an interview podcast featuring new, upcoming talent in horror, The show is a sibling podcast to Horror News Radio, the official HorrorNews.Net podcast. With each episode, the show’s host, Doc Rotten, spotlights a director, an actor, a screenwriter, an effects artists, a film maker conquering hurdles and barriers to get their films made, to follow their passion, to make horror films.

Director Christopher G. Moore, buried in the post production work on his follow up short Disengaged, joins Doc to discuss his journey in getting Foodie completed and in front of audiences through festivals and screenings. He shares how he became attached to the project and how one unexpected long shoot has the team scrambling to find a new location at the last minute - and how he triumphed over those hurdles. He also teases his latest project Disengaged with a peak into the film's premise and a few of its secrets. He is also running an IndieGoGo crowd funding campaign to secure the funds to complete the editing of the film.

Episode 4 – Takiawase

Episode four of HANNIBAL is a “honey” of a chapter that brings us some of the most disturbing imagery that NBC has put on the air yet.  On top of that – the story is one of the strongest on TV right now.  Will appears to be gaining a friend in Katz who along with Will is beginning to put together the pieces of the puzzle.  Bella Crawford’s sickness takes a turn for the worse but fear not, Dr. Lecter is there to lend a hand.  And we end things on a cliffhanger when Katz get’s a little nosey and the good doctor comes home early.  It’s an episode that is sure to force your brain right out of your head and leave you in a park staring at the sun.

MOLD!, from Neil Meschino, is a spectacular micro-budget horror film that made a big impression when it played at the Nevermore Film Festival in Durham, NC a few years back. The film is pure imagination, spirit and love for film on screen. It is often silly and over-the-top, but the energy is undeniable. And the film is the director's film school thesis but he continued to work on the film after graduating.

Welcome to another episode of The Future of Horror, an interview podcast featuring new, upcoming talent in horror, The show is a sibling podcast to Horror News Radio, the official HorrorNews.Net podcast. He joins Doc on this episode to share the lessons learned from his first feature, how he envisioned early on taking his first film to the big screen, the trials and triumphs he encountered along the way. He shares how what he learned filming MOLD! is being applied to his current work and we get into what choosing the correct location may do to a film.

The film makers blend fact and fiction into a new sub-genre of horror, a Shockumentary.

300: Rise of the Empire (2014) is hacking and slashing its gory way through the competition at the box office this weekend. The film is spectacular in its graphics, style and star Eva Green. While the grue-crew is not in 100 percent agreement, the conversation gets into the crazed violent, abundance of bloodshed and one specific line of dialog - which cannot be repeated here. If you have seen the film, you know the one!

Santos Ellin Jr. steps in for Thomas, who is off to SXSW, to provide this week's Top 5 discussing five of his favorite horror movie quotes. The man has a thing for colorful language, so the list is entertaining as ...well, you know. Dave, as always, has the Horror News of the Week and does not disappoint!

00:03:50 – 300: Rise of the Empire
While the film is all about the beefy men behind Greece and the 300, it is Eva Green as Artemisia that wins all the praise and love from the HNR crew. She is spectacular and the best thing in 300: Rise of the Empire. Santos is also all about the over-the-top bloodshed and action the film offers while Dave is impressed with the 3D. Doc, however, has issues but admits it may be more about the screening experience than that actual film. You need to listen to understand that debacle. The grue-crew review the film in all its 3D gory mayhem.

00:40:30 – Top 5 Horror Quotes
The Black Saint steps in for Thomas to bring his Top 5 for the week jumping on the crew's favorite line from the film bringing his Top 5 horror movie quotes. Santos relishes the opportunity to re-enact each and every quote and then puts Doc and Dave on the spot to drop their favorite as well.

  1. Dead Alive (1992) - "I kick ass for the Lord!"
  2. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) - "You gotta be f@%king kidding..."
  3. They Live  (1988) - "I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I am all out of bubble gum."
  4. Child's Play 3  (1991) - "Don't f@%k with the Chuck!"
  5. Phantasm  (1979) - "BOY!"

00:46:17 - Horror News of the Week for 03/10/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with the teaser trailer for Fear Clinic from director Robert Hall. Sticking with trailers, up next is the red band delight that is Stage Fright from director Jerome Sable featuring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. The action-packed TV spot and kick ass stills for The Raid 2 excite the crew. It looks like a 4K transfer of the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is on its way to theaters this fall. And, last but not least, Mondo has release a spectacular exclusive poster to promote this summer's Godzilla.

"You took from me, I take from you." Lily chills Ryan and Mike Weston's blood in the latest installment of THE FOLLOWING, season 2, episode 7, Sacrifice.

In episode seven of Horror News TV The Following Fan Podcast your hosts Doc Rotten and Dave Dreher once again get together to breakdown the twists and turns of this ever evolving second season of THE FOLLOWING

Horror News TV The Following Fan Podcast
Episode 7 – SACRIFICE

While season one of THE FOLLOWING was certainly a strong debut it seems that season two just might be something special and as such worthy of its own podcast.  Your hosts Doc Rotten and Dave Dreher have certainly taken notice and feel discussion is a must.  Join us this and every week as we rundown the episode and offer insight into what the future may hold.

Beware “friends” wearing silly masks, as they may just want to drink your blood!  Joe, Emma and Mandy find that out the hard way this week as they continue to attempt to hide from Ryan and the FBI.  Also Lily is still around and she certainly kicks things up a few notches this episode.  Everything builds to one of the most shocking conclusions of the season so far and takes the show to a whole new level.

Dave’s “Plot hole of the week” gets re-titled to “The BS moment of the week” as Doc once again blows Dave’s mind when he “Puts a name to the face”.

As always we want your feedback so drop us a line at dave@horrornewstv.com or docrotten@horrornewstv.com and we’ll talk next week as we continue to follow THE FOLLOWING.
