"I'm telling you, and I'm telling everybody at this table that that's a shark! And I know what a shark looks like because I've seen one up close. And you'd better do something about this one because I don't intend to go through that hell again!” It must not be safe to go back in the water. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they foolishly go back in the water anyway for Jaws 2 (1978).

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 122 – Jaws 2 (1978)

Police chief Brody must protect the citizens of Amity after a second monstrous shark begins terrorizing the waters.

IMDb

The Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew has a mixed reaction to Jaws 2. Chad really missed the Matt Hooper character but loved Roy Schieder’s performance and enjoys the film tremendously. On the other hand, Bill thinks Jaws 2 creates the template for disappointing sequels but having said that, points out that it is the best Jaws sequel and is still entertaining. Jeff enjoyed the film but had problems with the logic of some of its stories. The urgency of the original was missing in Jaws 2, according to Doc, and he was horribly disappointed with it.

The Grue-Crew is a bit split on Jaws 2 but, hey, it’s still the best Jaws sequel. At this writing, it is available on Blu-ray in a variety of packaging and is streaming on HBO max.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. Season 1 Episode 6 - ENTREE

A nurse at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane is brutally murdered by a patient, Dr. Abel Gideon, in a manner reminiscent of the "Chesapeake Ripper", who hasn't committed murder in two years, the same number of years Gideon has been incarcerated. While Graham tries to discover whether Gideon truly is the Ripper, Crawford receives a phone call, apparently from the real Ripper, who plays the recorded voice of Miriam Lass, a trainee Crawford had consulting on the Chesapeake Ripper case two years previously when she suddenly disappeared.

“Just because something isn't good doesn't mean it's bad.” But, in this case, it could be pretty great. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Joseph Perry, and Jeff Mohr - as they get to know the members of the Merrye family, especially the one known as Spider Baby (1967).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 82 – Spider Baby (1967)

In a dilapidated rural mansion, the last generation of the degenerate, inbred Merrye family lives with the inherited curse of a disease that causes them to mentally regress from the age of 10 or so on as they physically develop. The family chauffeur looks out for them and covers up their indiscretions. Trouble comes when greedy distant relatives and their lawyer arrive to dispossess the family of its home.

IMDb

Your Decades of Horror Classic Era Grue-Crew is understandably enamored of Spider Baby and who wouldn’t be? Lon Chaney Jr., Sid Haig, and the rest of the cast shine in Jack Hill’s low-budget macabre comedy. Jeff is particularly impressed with the detail and depth packed into nearly every scene. The film is still just as macabre and weird and darkly humorous as Joseph remembers it to be the first time he experienced it. Whitney gives a heartfelt remembrance of Sid Haig and expresses how much she enjoyed his performance in Spider Baby.

If you haven’t seen Spider Baby or even seen it lately, the Classic Era Grue-Crew thinks you should hit it again soon! At the time of this writing, Spider Baby is available to stream on Amazon Prime and as a Blu-ray disc from Arrow Video.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era puts out a new episode every two weeks. The next episode in their very flexible schedule is chosen by Jeff and will be The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), directed by Jack Arnold and written by Richard Matheson.

"Look at the size of those hematomas!"  Do we have to? Join your faithful Grue Crew - Bill Mulligan, Chad Hunt, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr -  as they visit the land of chins in Maniac Cop (1988).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 163 – Maniac Cop (1988)

A killer dressed in a police uniform begins murdering innocent people on the streets of New York City.

IMDb

Your 1980s Grue-Crew bravely tackles the first film in director William Lustig’s and writer Larry Cohen's Maniac Cop franchise despite the constant danger from being hit by swinging chins. Robert Z’Dar and Bruce Campbell are the main offenders but William Smith is no slouch in the chin category either. In fact, one of the film's biggest assets is its cast. Bill keeps trying to figure out what makes the titular character so hard to kill while Crystal digs Laurene Landon’s performance and her 80s hairdo. Tom Atkins is the main attraction for Chad while Jeff gets lost in all the cameos.

Currently, all three films in the Maniac Cop franchise are available for streaming on Shudder and on Blu-ray: Maniac Cop from Synapse Films, and Maniac Cop 2 and Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence from Blue Underground.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode will be dedicated to Maniac (1980), the Crew’s second William Lustig film in a row.

A schoolgirl and six of her classmates travel to her aunt's country home, which turns out to be haunted.

IMDb

Nobuhiko Ôbayashi’s House is an infamous Toho film. According to Bill, if you do an internet search for “weird Japanese movies,” House turns up number one on every list. Chad calls it the strangest movie they’ve ever removed. The 45-minute documentary on the Criterion Blu-ray edition is well worth the cost in Jeff’s opinion, especially in giving the viewer a vague idea of what House is all about. Doc, on the other hand, says don’t even bother trying to follow the narrative, but if you pay attention to what’s going on in the background, you might just see a talking watermelon puppet.

House (Hausu, original title) is without a doubt a unique and stunning film, one everyone should see at least once. Jeff has already recommended the Blu-ray from Criterion and currently, House is available to stream on HBOmax and the Criterion Channel. Your loyal Grue-Crew says check it out!

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror 2-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. Season 1 Episode 5 - COQUILLES

A murdered couple is found in a motel room, posed in praying positions with the flesh of their backs opened and strung to the ceiling to give them the appearance of wings. Using hairs collected from the motel pillow, the BAU team discover several medications used to treat brain tumors in the killer's bloodstream. “I have conquered science! Why can't I conquer love?” That’s the age-old question, isn’t it? Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, Joseph Perry, and Jeff Mohr - as they show some mad love for Peter Lorre’s performance in Mad Love (1935).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 81 – Mad Love (1935)

Paris, France: a demented surgeon's obsession with a British actress leads him to secretly replace her concert pianist husband's train-wreck-mangled hands with those of a guillotined murderer. . . with a gift for knife-throwing.

IMDb

Your Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew finally got around to Mad Love, the 1935 gem directed by Karl Freund and featuring a stellar performance from Peter Lorre. Whitney is impressed by how Yvonne Orlac handles the excessive creepiness of Dr. Gogol. Ted Healy and May Beatty, as an American reporter and Dr. Gogol’s maid, provide needed comic relief from the rest of the film’s heavy tone and tickle Chad’s and Joseph’s funnybones. Jeff points out Oscar-winner Gregg Toland’s involvement as the cinematographer of Mad Love.

It’s unfortunate that Mad Love has limited streaming or Blu-ray availability at this writing. Lorre’s performance alone is worth a quality, in-depth treatment, and Mad Love has much to offer beyond that.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era puts out a new episode every two weeks. The next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told (1967), chosen by Whitney.

The 1980s Grue-Crew has a special treat for listeners in this episode. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they interview Ed Martinez, a special effects artist who worked on crews for some memorable horror films, starting with The Dead Pit (1989).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 162 – Interview with Special Effects Artist Ed Martinez

Crystal Cleveland and Chad Hunt are unable to join the Grue-Crew for this episode so Bill Mulligan and Jeff Mohr get special effects artist Ed Martinez all to themselves. Martinez was so informative as our guest for episode 159 about The Dead Pit, they invited him back to discuss some of the rest of his career as a special effects artist spanning the years 1989 to 2015. Yeah, they know dang near all of that time falls outside the 1980s, but that’s just shows how much they dig special effects and Ed Martinez!

Martinez openly discusses the beginnings of his love for the art and craft of special effects and the path leading to his first film industry job as the director of special effects on The Dead Pit. He shares stories of his work and relationships during that 25-year career, being quick to give credit to those with whom he worked. In terms of actors, Martinez helped create the special effects magic on films starring Jeremy Slate, David Naughton, Terry O'Quinn, Brigitte Nielsen, Richard Moll, Joe Estevez, Todd Bridges, and Eric Roberts to name a few.

There are a few stories from the making of The Dead Pit that they didn’t have time for in episode 159, so Martinez starts with those and moves on to discuss his experiences working on the following films:

In case you are interested, here are links to some of the individuals, pages, and films discussed in this episode:
