Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

Dawn of the Dead was the first time Jeff ever saws effects as graphic as those featured in the film and he admits he got a little nauseous. Watching the film now, he’s impressed by Romero’s depiction of the social conditions of the time and how relevant it still is today. During his first viewing of Dawn of the Dead, Bill saw people run from the theater during the exploding head scene early in the film and he loved the effect used when a male zombie bites a woman’s shoulder. In his view, Dawn of the Dead is more influential in creating the zombie movie as we know it today than any other film. Chad was already a fan of Night of the Living Dead (1968) when the radio spot for Dawn of the Dead made a big impression while scaring the crap out of him. He had never seen anything like the zombie carnage he’d seen in Dawn of the Dead and it became one of his top ten favorite horror movies. The creepiness of the empty mall in the center section of Dawn of the Dead pulled Doc in and he is fascinated with the character development that takes place during that section.

You helped make the sesquicentennial episode of Decades of Horror 1970s a special one for all of us. If you haven’t seen this classic in a while, you owe it to yourself to give it a rewatch and this Halloween might be just the time.

A woman under suspicion of witchcraft is burned alive. Her curse brings her back from the dead for revenge.
The Long Hair of Death, aka I lunghi capelli della morte (original title), is Daphne’s choice and the rest of the Classic Era Grue Crew are very pleased with it. The gothic atmosphere with a theme of women seeking revenge made it a fun movie for her. Chad was looking forward to seeing Barbara Steele and was pleasantly surprised to find an engaging story and a new character he most loves to hate. Even Whitney thinks the title should be Everybody Hates Kurt. She also describes The Long Hair of Death as full of drama and questions and revenge amidst a beautiful, dark, and angry atmosphere. The atmosphere is amplified with an emotional score from Carlo Rustichelli (as Evirust), giving Jeff goosebumps during the finale.
Your Classic Era Grue Crew really enjoyed The Long Hair of Death and if you haven’t already seen it, they recommend that you make the effort to seek it out. It is currently available to stream on YouTube, Kanopy, and as PPV on Amazon Prime. There is also a Blu-ray disc from Raro Video which includes a better translation for the subtitles so be forewarned, the English dubbing and the subtitles do not match 100%.

An ancient creature called Rawhead is awakened from its slumber near an Irish village and goes on a rampage killing anyone in sight.

Chad, like most of us, is a big fan of Clive Barker’s work and Rawhead Rex is his pick. As is often the case, the movie varies from the story even though Clive Barker wrote the screenplay. Chad admits it’s not very good but he still has fun with it because it brings back memories of having fun going to monster movies with his buddies. Crystal, also a Clive Barker fan, loves the movie but thinks it would be even better if it had a more of a Barker feel to it. She does love the monster and its glowing eyes. Rawhead Rex doesn’t feel like Clive Barker according to Bill and though he loves the original story, he hates the movie. And don’t get him started on what he calls the big goofy monster and the limited movement of its mouth. For Jeff, Clive Barker’s prose has a definite feel and tone which is missing in Rawhead Rex. On the plus side, he enjoyed Ronan Wilmott’s over-the-top performance as the church’s verger and Rawhead’s disciple.
If you’re a Clive Barker completist or just love 1980s monster movies, Rawhead Rex is currently available to stream on Shudder, AMC+, Spectrum, and Arrow subscription services as well as on a Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.

A newspaper reporter and a retired, blind journalist try to solve a series of killings connected to a pharmaceutical company's top-secret experimental research projects; in doing so they become targets of the killer.

The Cat o’ Nine Tails is pure Giallo, according to Bill, but still pretty subdued for an Argento film. As a reasonably straightforward detective story, it held his interest and Karl Malden is terrific. Not being a big Giallo fan, Chad enjoyed The Cat o’ Nine Tails more than he thought he would, specifically pointing to a couple of cool murder scenes and Malden’s fantastic performance. Jeff agrees that The Cat o’ Nine Tails is more mystery than horror and, as such, is true to original Giallo themes. He adds his love for Malden’s performance to the chorus and enjoys seeing Argento’s progression from The Bird with the Crystal Plummage (1970) to this film to Deep Red (1975) to Suspiria (1977). The Cat o’ Nine Tails has Doc’s attention with the idea of the two different types of journalists getting together, a couple of fascinating kills, keeping track of the red herrings, and putting a child in harm’s way. And then there’s the strange love scene between Catherine Spaak and James Franciscus. Hmm.
Giallo and Argento fans will want to see this film! As of this writing, The Cat o’ Nine Tails is available to stream from Shudder and The Criterion Channel and on physical media as a brand new 4K restoration on Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

Whitney had a “reel” treat when she first saw (Horror of) Dracula at Geoffrey Rayles’s Rayle Archives in Lenoir, NC where she was able to view the 1958, 35mm, Technicolor print along with a couple reels of the early 1960s re-release. Of course, she loved the movie. What’s not to like with Cushing, Lee, and Gough? For Chad, (Horror of) Dracula changed the way he looked at the Count and, along with The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), this one is his favorite Hammer film. Chad also has a heck of a story about the first time he saw the film at his grandparent’s house. Daphne had great fun watching Cushing and Lee, especially in the few scenes they had together in (Horror of) Dracula. Jeff is a big fan of Dracula (1931) but also loves Lee’s more feral, animalistic interpretation in (Horror of) Dracula.
You might say Dick Klemensen gives truth to the statement, “If you show it, he will come,” when he drove over two hours across the state to catch a showing of (Horror of) Dracula at a drive-in theater in Des Moines. According to Dick, if you want to show someone a Hammer film who has never seen one, this is it. The film has everything: action, blood, fights, and pacing.
Incidentally, if you haven’t read an issue of The Little Shoppe of Horrors Magazine, edited and published by Dick Klemensen since 1972, head on over to their website and order yourself an issue (or two or three). They’re stock full (at about 100 pages of 8-point font) of interesting articles and art about classic British horror films.
Also be sure to check out The Men Who Made Hammer shorts (running between 15 and 60 minutes each) featuring Dick and produced by Constantine Nasr on the Scream Factory Blu-ray releases of the following Hammer films: X the Unkown (1956, Jimmy Sangster), The Brides of Dracula (1960, Jack Asher and Terence Fisher), The Curse of the Werewolf (1961, Roy Ashton), The Phantom of the Opera (1962, Anthony Hinds), The Kiss of the Vampire (1963, James Bernard and Bernard Robinson), The Lost Continent (1968, Michael Carreras & film commentary), and Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974, Roy Skeggs). The other entry in The Men Who Made Hammer series features Tony Dalton (author of Terence Fisher: Master of Gothic Cinema, 2021) discussing Freddie Francis on The Evil of Frankenstein (1964).
October is a great month to revisit this Hammer gem! As of this writing, (Horror of) Dracula is available for streaming on HBOmax.

Chad first saw this film at a drive-in theater when he was a teen and thought it was incredibly boring. This time around, he found the relationship split brought to life to be incredibly intense with the camera work adding to the claustrophobic feel. Crystal loved it as well, calling Possession brilliance wrapped in a madness spiral with an amazing monster. Generally, Bill is not a fan of “artsy-fartsy European” movies, but he agrees with Crystal that Possession is a masterpiece even though he is not sure if he understands it or if he is supposed to understand it. He calls Isabelle Adjani’s performance in this strange, well-directed, beautiful film to be one of the bravest he has seen. Jeff loves this film and is extremely excited to have the chance to cover it. He is delighted with the new 4K restoration from Metrograph which is far superior to the Blu-ray release in his collection.
If you’re interested in checking out this incredible 4K restoration of Possession, and you should be, it opens theatrically and digitally exclusively at the Metrograph October 1-14 and in theaters nationwide on October 15.
