“Blood of Christ. Demon. A curse upon this man. A curse that he will never forget me. Blood of my body. Until the grave. A curse that he will never forget me.” That doesn’t sound like a love spell. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, Doc Rotten, and Jeff Mohr – as they learn about the folk horror of Southern Italy in Il Demonio (1963).

Purificata is a young peasant woman in a small Italian villa obsessed with Antonio, a newly married man. Puri’s sickly fixation on Antonio leads her to practice witchcraft in an attempt to direct him to her, but instead, she becomes the subject of a witch-hunt when she appears to be possessed.

If you thought “folk horror” began in the 70s, then Jeff and Grue-Crew have some excellent news for you! Check out this early entry into superstitions and curses with Il Demonio (1963). Is it possession? Is it witchcraft? Could be either, could be both! Regardless, the film is a must-watch for horror aficionados for the exquisite black and white cinematography and remarkable performance from its lead, Daliah Lavi, alone. If you’re like Doc, the gorgeous early Sixties Italian countryside is enough. Regardless, you’ll want to check out this discussion into an overlooked classic.

At the time of this writing, Il Demonio is available to stream from Shudder, Screambox, and Tubi. Il Demonio is also available on physical media in All the Haunts be Ours: A Compendium of Folk Horror, a stunning Blu-ray collection from Severin that includes 20 feature films plus over 15 hours of special features.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Doc, is I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957). Wait! Is that the one starring Little Joe? Or is it Pa Ingalls? Or a probationary angel?

“Pretty soon we’re going to have a sticky wicket.” Don’t you hate when that happens? Wait. What’s a wicket? Join your faithful Grue Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr – as they soak up the full experience known as The Loch Ness Horror (1982).

An increasing number of people are dying mysterious deaths in the dark waters of Loch Ness, victims of the famous monster. But what other mysteries does the Loch hold? What about the monster’s egg and the insane scientist who’ll do anything to exploit it? What secrets does the sunken Nazi plane near the monster’s lair hold, and why will the military do anything to cover it up?

Is there anything more terrifying than The Loch Ness Horror (1982)? Absolutely. Regardless, the Grue-Crew head to Scotland via cinema (actually, Lake Tahoe, California . . . sigh) to explore the creature below the surface of Loch Ness. Maybe Chad has it right, “Drowning in a sea of terrible movies…!” With silly puppet monsters, directed by self-proclaimed “schlockmeister” Larry Buchanan, the film includes sad effects, a meandering plot, and questionable acting. Could this be a cult classic? Only Jerry Chandler knows for sure.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Dario Argento’s Tenebrae (1982). Oh, yeah.

Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at feedback@gruesomemagazine.com.

“I … I should never have come with you. We’re going to be killed. We’re going to be killed. I hear the demons of the red moon like the other time. I know they’re here. We’re going to die. AAYYIIIEEE!” Yup. In hindsight, bad decision. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they make their first trip to the Himalayan Mountains (just kidding, it’s really Spain) to catch Paul Naschy taking another turn as Waldemar Daninsky in The Werewolf and the Yeti(1975).

Waldemar, the renowned adventurer, joins an expedition to find the Yeti in the Himalayas. While hiking the mountains, he’s captured by two cannibalistic demon nymphets guarding a remote Buddhist temple and becomes their sex slave. They transform him into a werewolf setting him loose to roam the mountain where he encounters a sadistic bandit.

The Grue-Crew return to another Waldemar Daninsky werewolf adventure featuring the Spanish horror icon, Paul Naschy, in The Werewolf and the Yeti (1975, aka La maldición de la bestiaNight of the Howling BeastThe Curse of the Beast). For this installment, Waldemar gets a new “origin” to his cursed lycanthropy. We follow him to Tibet in search of the mysterious and elusive Yeti; instead, he finds a string of monsters and madmen to best before finally facing the Yeti himself: two cannibalistic cavewomen, the villainous Sekkar Khan, and his ruthless bandits. Blood, nudity, and the Wolfman – what else do you need? Maybe, more Yeti? Join the crew as they revisit this misbegotten and misunderstood Naschy gem.

At the time of this writing, The Werewolf and the Yeti is available to stream under one of its titles on Tubi, Plex, and Shout! Factory TV. It is also available on Blu-ray from Scream! Factory as part of The Paul Naschy Collection II. Other films in the collection are Hunchback of the Morgue (1973, El jorobado de la Morgue), The Devil’s Possessed (1974, El mariscal del infierno), Exorcism (1975, Exorcismo), and A Dragonfly for Each Corpse (1975, Una libélula para cada muerto).

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Bill, will be Dario Argento’s first directorial effort, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970, L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo). There’s always room for Giallo!

Tsalkku-Nilla the Great Wizard can raise the dead!” You never can tell when you’ll need to bring back a lost reindeer or raise the dead. A newlywed woman goes to the local shaman to get some help with her love life, but instead discovers she is a witch and can now shapeshift into a white reindeer vampire.

The Grue Crew explores the little-known, yet highly effective, 1952 Finnish horror classic, The White Reindeer. This film is worth seeking out for the cinematography alone. The horror and the “creatures” are Lewtonesque, more implied than shown, but without a doubt, the film includes witches, vampires, and changelings. Oh my! A must-see, The White Reindeer is a lost treasure that horror fans, especially horror historians, should re-discover. Check out what the Grue Crew has to share.

In the U.S., current streaming options for The White Reindeer are limited to YouTube and archive.org. The White Reindeer is available on physical media as a Eureka Entertainment Region 2 Blu-ray from the UK and as a Region A/B/C Import Blu-ray from Finland.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Daphne, is Il Demonio (1963). Ready for some Italian folk horror? The Classic Era Grue Crew is! You won’t want to miss this one!

When a terrorist’s body, infected with a stolen chemical, is cremated by the US military, a virus is unintentionally released into the atmosphere over a small island.

It’s time to return to the gloriously gory realm of the Italian zombie movie. Whoa-boy! Zombie 3 (aka Zombi 3, aka Zombie Flesh Eaters 2), is a sequel to Fulci’s Zombi 2 (1979) in name only, much as Fulci’s Zombi 2 (known as Zombie in the U.S.) is a “sequel” to Romero’s Zombi (1978, known as Dawn of the Dead in the States). Alternate film titles, am I right? Woof.

Regardless, Fulci does return to direct this feature but it’s eventually co-directed by Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragrasso when Fulci leaves the Philippines for . . . reasons. What about those reasons? Or the story? Or the locations? Or the effects work? Or the acting? Or the . . . well, you’re just going to have to check out what the 80s Grue Crew have to say about this latterday Fulci effort.

Hey, it’s still Fulci which makes it worth a watch in the Decades of Horror book. At the time of this writing, Zombie 3 is available to stream with ads from Tubi and The Roku Channel; by subscription from Flix Fling, Night Flight, or Screambox; and from multiple PPV sources. Zombie 3 is also available as a Blu-ray disc from Severin Films.

If you’re interested, here are other Decades of Horror episodes focused on movies directed by Lucio Fulci:

“Nothing is too vile. Nothing is too dreadful, too awful. You need to know the terror, the horror, Lorrimor. You need to feel the thrill of disgust, the beauty of obscenity.” Oh, Freddie Jones, you had me at vile. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they do a ride-along with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee for their last Hammer film together, The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973).

In 1974, Scotland Yard believes it has uncovered a case of vampirism, so they call in veteran vampire researcher Professor Lorrimer Van Helsing.

It’s time to cover the final pairing of Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee as Count Dracula in Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride! Wait, no… The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973). Two years after the events of Dracula A.D. 1972, Cushing’s Van Helsing discovers Lee’s Dracula is still alive… and living in London… (see what I did there) and is now a wealthy CEO. But, he still has dastardly plans in his cape. Ironically, while this film did not land state-side until 1978 keeping U.S. fans waiting, it is now, sadly, in the public domain… sigh. Regardless, if you watch a sharp HD cut from an original print, you can catch glimpses of the powerhouse horror film company Hammer used to be as Helsing and crew literally use every method possible to dispose of the vampires lurking about. C’mon, despite its questionable quality, you gotta see this.

At the time of this writing, The Satanic Rites of Dracula is available to stream from the Roku Channel, Tubi, Popcornflix, Freevee, Screambox, and a variety of PPV sources. It is also available on Blu-ray from Warner Archives.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. Or Horror of the Werewolf? Or The Curse of the Beast? Or Hall of the Mountain King? Anyhoo, have you seen any of these?

When a hot-air balloon crashes on a remote island, the crew discovers Dr. Frankenstein’s ancestor carrying on the family work, along with a race of mutants and a population of Amazons.

It’s finally time – and by popular demand – to tackle the infamous Frankenstein Island (1981). With movies such as Face of the Screaming Werewolf (1965), The Wild World of Batwoman (1966), or Teenage Zombies (1960) under his belt, are you prepared for a Jerry Warren film from the early Eighties? If you’re a fan of schlocky cult films, of course, you are! Actors Robert Clarke and Katherine Victor are joined by legends Cameron Mitchell and John Carradine in a yarn about an island full of Frankenstein’s sunglasses-wearing zombies. And yeah, Jeff gives a 5-minute monologue on Steve Brodie’s career (just humor him). Enjoy!

Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they fly into John Carpenter’s first film, Dark Star (1974), which was born as a student project and nurtured into a feature film by Carpenter, co-writer Dan O’Bannon, and executive producer Jack Harris.

In the far reaches of space, a small crew, 20 years into their solitary mission, find things beginning to go hilariously wrong.

Here’s a doozy for all of you John Carpenter fans out there. And, let’s not forget Dan O’Bannon and Jack Harris. This is it, John Carpenter’s first directorial effort, straight out of college (literally), the sci-fi comedy, Dark Star (1974). Strong Stanley Kubrick influences abound from Dr. Strangelove… (1964) to  2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). You don’t have to look too closely to see the elements that leap from this film into Dan O’Bannon’s Alien (1979) script. In fact, Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron, pays homage to this film with its famous knife challenge gag. Rough around the edges for certain, Dark Star still manages to entertain and provide a chuckle or two. Check out what the Grue Crew thinks. Strap in and may the beach ball alien be with you!

At the time of this writing, Dark Star is available to stream from most free w/ads, subscription, and PPV sources. It is also available on Blu-ray from VCI Video.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Doc, will be Hammer’s The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973). Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee for the win!

A radioactive, mud-like creature terrorizes a Scottish village.

It’s time to explore early Hammer Sci-fi films with X the Unknown (1956). The film is part of a trilogy of Cold War sci-fi features along with The Quatermass Xperiment (1955, aka The Creeping Unknown) and Quatermass 2 (1957, aka Enemy From Space) that firmly transitioned Hammer from B-movie thrillers to solid horror/sci-fi excellence. The only thing missing is Bernard Quatermass himself, but not without Hammer trying – writer Nigel Kneale would not agree to the use of the character in this film. Regardless, X the Unknown is notable and well worth the watch. Hammer fans will appreciate an early appearance of fan-favorite character actor Michael Ripper as Sergeant Grimsdyke. Let’s see what the Grue-Crew make of directors Leslie Norman’s and Joseph Losey’s, and writer Jimmy Sangster’s black-and-white creepy classic.

With this episode, The Classic Era Grue-Crew say adiós a nuestra querida amiga to Whitney Collazo. She has more opportunities than time to pursue them and will be stepping away from her podcast hosting duties. Whitney has participated in over 100 episodes of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era. Grue Believers and Grue-Crew alike will sorely miss her insightful comments, her unique movie choices, and her loving persona. We love you without reservation, Whitney. You will always be welcome here! And if you find a movie you’d like to discuss with us or have a movie you’d like to hear us discuss, just give us a shout-out. Buena suerte, mi querido amigo!

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, the Classic Era Grue-Crew wanted a fitting topic for their 150th episode. They decided on a film often considered one of the best horror films of all time, Rosemary’s Baby (1968), written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on the book by Ira Levin, starring Mia Farrow who is supported by an Oscar-winning performance from Ruth Gordon. Are you ready for more Ray Harryhausen? More Sindbad? Maybe you prefer Patrick Wayne or Jane Seymour? Regardless, the Grue-Crew set sail for Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) on the latest episode of Decades of Horror 1970s. The stop-motion creatures for the third Harryhausen Sinbad film include the Troglodyte, the Minoton (a magical large bronze minotaur brought to life by an evil witch), a large baboon, a large wasp, a giant walrus, a trio of “ghouls,” and a sabretooth tiger. The film is full of crappy dialog, rough editing, lackluster direction, and wooden acting… all saved by Harryhausen’s wonderful effects work. Let’s dive in!

In a dystopian future, a cross-country automobile race requires contestants to run down innocent pedestrians to gain points that are tallied based on each kill’s brutality.

Join the Grue-Crew as they revisit the campy sci-fi smash-em-up, Death Race 2000 (1975), from Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and director Paul Bartel. The film stars David Carradine (as Frankenstein) opposite pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone (as Joe “Machine Gun” Viterbo) in the dystopian “future” of the year 2000, a time when Americans root for their favorite drivers as they race from New York to New Los Angeles mowing down civilians along the way for points. Machine Gun Viterbo is out for blood while Frankenstein has other plans. Let the shenanigans begin.

In a totalitarian future society, Winston Smith, whose daily work is re-writing history, tries to rebel by falling in love.

Join the Grue-Crew for a very special episode featuring a review of the 1954 BBC TV presentation of Nineteen Eighty-Four (originally an episode of BBC Sunday-Night Theatre) starring Peter Cushing in a break-out role alongside André Morell, Yvonne Mitchell, and Donald Pleasence. The original presentation on December 12, 1954, was controversial and unrecorded. Thankfully for genre fans and Peter Cushing fans alike, BBC programmed a second live show on December 16 which was recorded and remains available today. Check out what the Grue-Crew have to say about this slice of British television history. Let’s just say they were gobsmacked.

At the time of this writing, Nineteen Eighty-Four is available to stream from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel and is available as a Blu-ray disc (Playback Region B/2) from BFI.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Whitney, Even the Wind is Afraid (1968, Hasta el viento tiene miedo), written and directed by Carlos Enrique Taboada, starring Marga López, and credited as having revitalized the Mexican horror genre.

A mother resorts to voodoo to get back at those who killed her son.

The exploration of horror films from the 1980s continues with the Canadian feature Zombie Nightmare from director Jack Bravman. The cast includes Tia Carrere, Jon Miki Thor, and Shawn Levy. Oh, yeah, and Adam West!!! Holy Day Player, Batman! In this film, the zombie is resurrected by a voodoo priestess. Do we need more voodoo zombies in our horror movies? Maybe, just maybe. These particular voodoo zombies? The jury is still out. You know you want to know what the Grue-Crew thinks. Oh, yeah… that you do!

At the time of this writing, Zombie Nightmare is available to stream on the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Tubi, Night Flight (subs), Arrow (subs), and several PPV options. The film is also available as a Blu-ray disc from Code Red.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be C.H.U.D. (1984). It’s sort of a PG version of Humanoids of the Deep, right? Maybe, kind of?
