Review: The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death (2015)

What happens when there is very little "Woman in Black" in The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death movie? According to Thomas and The Black Saint, "Ample time to take a nap." For many of the grue-crew, the Hammer sequel proves to be a snooze-fest; while for a few on the show and for Mrs. Dreher (co-host Dave's better half), the film offers some entertaining Gothic horror romance. Listen and decide for yourself...does the first horror film of 2015 have anything to offer?

What Have You Been Watching: Pieces of Talent

Based on a recommendation of HNR listener and fan, Donnie H., Doc reviews the independent horror feature from North Carolina film maker Joe Stauffer. High praise for the director, the cinematography and for the film's stars: David Long and Kristi Ray. The Black Saint backs Doc up with news that the film won multiple awards at the New York City Horror Film Festival in 2013 including Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Review: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

The final film in The Hobbit trilogy picks up directly where The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug left off with the dragon hammering down on Lake Town where Luke Evans takes down the beast. But his victory comes too late, and the townsfolk follow him to the foot of The Lonely Mountain where Thorin suffers from "dragon sickness" guarding his treasure. Before it all ends, there are orcs, goblins, a dwarf prince on a giant pig, elves, bats, mountain worms and - to The Black Saint's surprise and elation - large eagles dropping bears into the battle.

What Have You Been Watching: The Black Mirror Christmas Special

Thomas is thrilled to review the latest holiday special to the highly regarded UK "Twilight Zone" anthology series, The Black Mirror Christmas Special. Jon Hamm leads the cast in a show that explores the sinister side of technology in fascinating and inventive ways. Check it out with Thomas' highest recommendation.

Horror News of the Week for 12/22/2014

Sad news follows with the passing of Billie Whitelaw who made a lasting impression as Mrs. Baylock in The Omen (1976). "Below the crypt lies death's waiting room...the Vault of Horror." Milton Subotsky and Amicus return with another horror anthology The Vault of Horror, a direct follow up to Tales from the Crypt (1972). Roy Ward Baker steps in to take the director reigns from Freddie Francis bringing his own distinct but similar style with improved angles and composition with a more humorous tint. The blu ray also brings the film to the States for the first time uncut.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 9 – Vault of Horror (1973)

The Vault of Horror brings five new tales to the big screen inspired by and adapted from the EC horror comics from the 50's, four from Tales from the Crypt and one from Shock SuspenStories. The stories include "Midnight Mess," "The Neat Job," "This Trick'll Kill You," "Bargain in Death" and "Drawn & Quartered" with a collection of character actors from the 70s: Terry-Thomas, Daniel Massey, Anna Massey, Curd Jurgans, Michael Craig, Glynis Johns and Tom Baker. This release marks the first time the film is presented uncut where at least four scenes are restored. While the film does not feature a Crypt Keeper nor Amicus anthology mainstay Peter Cushing, the film does continue the revenge themed terror and horror that makes these films so special. "Everything that makes life worth leaving!"

It's time to discuss the worst horror films of the year, the most dreadful crap of 2014. The HNR grue-crew have no problems coming up  with 10 films each that failed to ignite the imagination, compassion, conflict or excitement that cinema has to offer. What films dropped the ball, meandered in their narrative or, worse, were simply dull to the bone? Let's take a look back at 2014 to call out some of the films that should have done better...

"You were cruel and mean right from the start, now you can truly say you have no heart." Peter Cushing as Arthur Grimsdyke leaves a horrifying Valentines card for his murderers in Poetic Justice, one of the fantastic stories in the classic Amicus Anthology film Tales from the Crypt (20172). Inspired by the EC Comics in the fifties, Milton Subotsky pens a memorable, creepy tome featuring a deadly Santa, an antique with a deadly touch, a maze of death and more.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 8 – Tales from the Crypt (1972)

Tales from the Crypt is not the first horror anthology, it is not even the first from the British film company Amicus, but it may be the best remembered - if not, it should be. Drawing inspiration directly from the horror comics two decades earlier, the film ties together five short tales with a wrap around story featuring the Crypt Keeper. The Black Saint and Doc recap and review each story praising Peter Cushing in Poetic Justice and the creative revenge found in Blind Alleys. The film is responsible for inspiring two sequels, Vault of Horror and From Beyond the Grave, a loving tribute from Stephen King and George Romero with Creepshow and an HBO television that elevated the Crypt Keeper to a modern horror icon.

They find themselves amused at the number of Bigfoot films out this year and are thrilled that Exists is the best among the best. The Babadook tops another "best of" list for 2014. If you haven't seen this film yet, what are you waiting for? And of course, what would 2014 be without Godzilla.

Review: The Pyramid (2014)

Producer Alexandre Aja delivers dangerous mazes, flesh hungry Sphinx creature and Anubis in his latest film The Pyramid. While the film delivers a bevy of gory effects but fails to bring much scares or horror. While Doc and Vixen find enough to entertain them for the 89 minute run time, The Black Saint can't help but wonder why they remade As Above, So Below. Bwah hah hah.

"She Is Young, She Is Beautiful, She is Next...She's Living in the Gateway to Hell" The tag line for The Sentinel (1977) gives away the darkest secret of the big budgeted, big release horror film from Michael Winner based on the hit novel from Jeffrey Konvitz. The cast is insane and the effects are from the legendary Dick Smith.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 6 – Squirm (1976)

For The Sentinel, Doc Rotten and The Black Saint are joined by North Carolina writer/directory/fxartist Bill (400 Ways to Kill a Vampire, A Few Brains More) Mulligan to discuss the overlooked classic from 1977. If nothing else, the cast itself in impressive: Chris Sarandon, Cristina Raines, Ava Gardner & Burgess Meredith, with Martin Balsam, John Carradine, Jose Ferrer, Arthur Kennedy, Sylvia Miles, Deborah Raffin, Eli Wallach, Christopher Walken, Jerry Orbach, Beverly D'Angelo, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Berenger, William Hickey. A who's who of Hollywood then and now. The film is also notorious for the controversy surrounding the use of real "freaks" for the finale that spawned protests and discouraging reviews upon its release. Still the film has a horrific and genuinely frightening scene that places it at number 46 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments (2004).

A double feature special Thanksgiving edition of HNR is coming your way reviewing The Guest (2014) and Starry Eyes (2014), two smaller budget VOD films from up and coming directors with lead roles that introduce star making performances. Review: Starry Eyes (2014)

Writer/Directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer deliver their crowd funded, highly reviewed, low budget feature film Starry Eyes which examines a young woman's desire to become a star and the crazy lengths she will go to get what she wants. The intimate script mixes elements of Faust, body horror and slasher film tropes into an interesting but uneven film. Alex Essoe is captivating in the starring role.

Review: The Guest (2014)

HNR favorites Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett follow up their film, You're Next, with The Guest about a mysterious stranger who arrives at the home of a family dealing with the loss of the oldest son who died overseas serving his country. Dan Stevens stars as David who has shocking and horrifying secrets. The film is energetic, exciting and bloody. It may become a cult classic.

What Have You Been Watching: Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014)

Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint complain that the latest Katniss feature, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, is overly padded and dull. The Black Saint is particularly concerned that splitting the final book into two features is solely a money grab by the studios and may ultimately sour the franchise. Does Thomas agree?

When discussing horror films, it is easy to get fixated with the actors, the directors, the writers and the special effects artists involved in the film. Kelly joins The Future of Horror to discuss his involvement and experiences on many genre films of the recent past, the hit television show The Strain and the upcoming haunted house epic Crimson Peak. He schools Doc in what it takes to get behind the camera as an operator and the rigors, challenges and rewards of being involved in the industry. Review: Jessabelle (2014)

The only thing that the grue-crew can agree upon in this week's horror release Jessabelle is that Sarah Snook makes an impression with the character driven horror film set in the deep south. The Black Saint suggests it is better suited for the Lifetime channel finding very little that is scary or interesting while Doc, Vixen and Dave all seem to like the film quite a bit. The Black Saint and Thomas Mariani discuss the film's sound design, spectacular special effects and emotional human drama. Even though it may not be Nolan's best film, Interstellar is still a film to seek out and enjoy.

What Have You Been Watching:  Over the Garden Wall

The Cartoon Network astounds Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint with its 10 episode animated min-series Over the Garden Wall. The vocal talent is extraordinary and the execution is surprisingly emotional and bent. Thomas and The Black Saint recommend the miniseries with The Black Saint suggesting it would make a terrific film with the 10 episode consumed in one showing.

"...by the billions they came, swarming over the land, sucking the life from anything in their path." The tag line promises Squirm (1979) will horrify and disgust you with the killer swarm of...worms. Wait? What? Worms? Yeah, worms! Director Jeff Lieberman delivers cinemas singular horror film featuring killer Glycera worms.  The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 6 – Squirm (1976)

Both Doc Rotten and The Black Saint fondly recall the impression the promotion stills from Famous Monsters of Filmland left upon even before they were able to catch the film: The Black Saint in the theater upon its original release and Doc with its television premiere. Now as they re-watch the film once again in celebration of its latest Blu-Ray release from Scream Factory, Doc and Saint revel in the gruesome worm closeups as the pour out of closets and drains and burrow their way into the face of Roger Grimes. Somehow, director Jeff Lieberman manages to exploit the squeamish, slimy attributes of the titular creatures attacking a southern household in rural Georgia. Creepy drive-in madness in only the way Seventies horror can provide.

Review: Horns (2014)

Daniel Radcliff continues to explore the horror and fantasy genre after his years as Harry Potter with Horns playing a man who is accused of killing his girlfriend, Juno Temple, finds that he grows a pair of horns and decides to solve the murder on his own facing his own demons and those of his friends and surrounding community. Director Alexandre Aja delivers his most emotional work yet and the HNR crew share their thoughts on the film, the direction and the power behind the script inspired by the book from Joe Hill.

Review: VHS: Viral (2014)

The popular found footage anthology franchise continues with VHS: Viral providing three new shorts and another wonky, confusing wrap around story. As with most anthology films, the movie is a good as its best short and as bad as its worst with VHS: Viral being the most uneven of the series yet, but still strong enough to have the HNR grue-crew looking forward to a fourth entry.
