FEEDBACK

ANDY L - Hi Doc,
I've been meaning to write for a while but been rather busy. Just wanted to say that I’m glad to see the return of horror news to Horror news radio. I think it was a good choice to divide things into horror news radio for news, and Gruesome magazine for reviews. It was often the case in the past or there’s a lot of overlap between what belonged in what feed. This is a much more clear delineation.
While I agree with you that it’s nice to see Kurt and Wyatt Russell together on screen, I still have a bit of misgivings about the idea of either a Godzilla or a king Kong series. Not sure if either one is really well designed for that kind of multiple interconnected episodes. However, I will keep an open mind. Thank the crew for the continued entertaining podcast

DON JOE - These all look good to me but a new Marcus Dunstan film gets the vote from me.
The dude has a great track record with multiple franchise pictures under his belt with writing and directing credits on Feast, Saw, Collector, Piranha. Although it's just a story credit, his take on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a lot of fun and showed he could work in the family horror category too. Also loved his Into the Dark episode 'Pilgrim', a highlight episode on an under appreciated series. Here's hoping this next directing credit goes well and gets him even more work.

PAUL CARRO - I will watch anything with Samara Weaving, she has yet to be in a film that I did not enjoy. Great show!

CHAD WHITE - looking forward to Spirit Halloween. actually looks better than I expected.
Thank you for hanging out with the Grue-Crew. Be sure to hit the LIKE, SUBSCRIBE buttons, or Share with a Friend. Every click counts.

“I am Ergo, the magnificent. Short in stature, tall in power, narrow of purpose, and wide of vision. And I do not travel with peasants and beggars. Goodbye!” No brag, just fact. Join your faithful Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr  – as they check out the epic quest depicted in Krull (1983).

A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet.

Crystal has always been a fan of fantasy and has loved Krull since her childhood so it’s not surprising that this is her pick. In fact, she always wanted to be Lyssa. She also loves the handsome and oh-so-precious lead and the costumes, and when she first saw the film, she was afraid of the Widow of the Web.

Steven Archer’s stop motion animation of the crystal spider is Bill’s favorite part of Krull. Well, that and the cyclops. He’s disappointed in the way the Beast is shot, especially after learning of all that went into its design. And, of course, you’ve got to love the glaive, a very stupid yet very cool weapon.

Chad is a big fan of sword and sorcery, and distinctive weapons so Krull is one of his favorites. He is particularly impressed with the cyclops, the beast, and some of the sets with their feel of German expressionism. He does, however, view it as being incohesive with a lot of the story that doesn’t make sense. Jeff describes Krull as a beautiful movie with its sets, locations, production design, and costumes, He also gives a special nod to Freddie Jones for the added gravitas he gives the film.

If you are hungering for some glaive-work or an 80s, sword and sorcery, quest movie with horrific elements (did we forget to mention the changelings?), Krull is just the ticket. At the time of this writing, Krull is available for streaming from HBOmax and various PPV options. As far as physical media, Krull is currently available as a Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Blu-ray.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be Cannibal Apocalypse (1983), directed by Antonio Margheriti and starring John Saxon! Or is it Cannibals in the Streets? Or Apocalypse domani? Or Invasion of the Fleshhunters? Or Cannibal Massacre? Or… well, you get the picture.

“May God bless you. This message was pre-recorded and automatically programmed.” It’s so nice to know they gave it the personal touch. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they check out a nuclear apocalypse as imagined in Chosen Survivors (1974).

Synopsis: After being selected at random by a computer to seek safety in an underground bomb shelter on the eve of a nuclear attack, a group of refugees makes a horrible realization: They are sharing the space with a colony of vampire bats.

Chosen Survivor is a movie Grue-Believers will remember as one mentioned more than once by The Black Saint. It took the 70s Grue Crew a while, but they are finally covering it. Chad describes Chosen Survivors as an apocalyptic tale with cool actors that he kind of likes but with which he is also kind of bored to tears. In the end, he was hoping the bats would eat everyone. Chosen Survivors feels like a 70s TV movie to Bill and most of it looked to him almost like it was shot through gauze. On top of that, a fear of bats is not one of his phobias and the inaccuracy in the film’s depiction of vampire bats took him out of the movie.

Jeff thinks the Chosen Survivors has a lot of cool visuals despite the omnipresent soft focus. He enjoys it even though the plot is a bunch of nonsense and found it a little interesting in conjunction with the actual plan the government had formulated in the event of a nuclear apocalypse. The pure, 70s-gold cast is the high point for Doc. Describing Chosen Survivors as more science fiction than horror with reasons to like it, in the end, he admits it’s not very good.

If a group of people locked up in a facility far underground during a nuclear apocalypse while under attack by unnaturally behaving vampire bats is your thing, you need to check out Chosen Survivors. At the time of this writing, it is available to stream from YouTube and on physical media as a Kino Lorber Blu-ray.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by Jeff, will be Lady Snowblood (1973), complete with swordplay and blood galore.

A scientist has a horrific accident when he tries to use his newly invented teleportation device.

IMDb

The first of five “Fly” movies, The Fly is Jeff’s pick for this episode. It’s one of those movies from his childhood that indelibly printed its horrific scenes in his memory. Watching now, he is still impressed with the movie, especially in the way the story is told and with the Ben Nye-created makeup effects.

Chad agrees that The Fly is a fantastic horror film. It feels more real to him than a lot of science fiction-horror movies of the 50s adding that it is the characters that help make it so. The reveal of Andre’s (David Hedison) fly head feels almost like the face reveal in The Phantom of the Opera (1925). The Fly was nightmare fuel for Whitney when she first saw it as a child on Halloween night, complete with a candy bag that included fake spiders. Daphne fell in love with The Fly during the first few minutes when blood drips down the side of an hydraulic press and the night watchman’s scream morphs into a telephone ringing in Francois’s (Vincent Price) office.

It’s probably not surprising that the Classic Era Grue Crew thinks The Fly is a true classic of the horror genre. If you’re ready to refresh your memory, as of this writing, The Fly can be streamed from HBO max as well as several PPV sources. It is also available on physical media as a 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and as one of five Blu-ray discs included in Scream Factory’s The Fly Collection. Also included in The Fly Collection are Return of the Fly (1959), Curse of the Fly (1965), The Fly (1986), and The Fly II (1989).

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by next episode’s guest host, Steven Turek: Horrors of the Black Museum (1959) starring Michael Gough.

‘Brundle stole my girl, your mother. Got her pregnant. Caused her death. Dissolved my hand and my foot with fly vomit! I had no love for the man. Join your faithful Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr  – as they check out The Fly II (1989), the worthy sequel to David Cronenberg’s The Fly.

The almost-human son of “Brundlefly” searches for a cure to his mutated genes while being monitored by a nefarious corporation that wishes to continue his father’s experiments.

IMDb

The Fly II ain’t no slouch, even when compared to David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986). This one is Bill’s pick and to his mind, even though The Fly II doesn’t have Cronenberg, effects guru Chris Walas does an excellent job directing his first film. It has a number of high points, including a really monstrous monster.

Chad is glad they didn’t try to redo The Fly, taking The Fly II in a different direction and letting it tell its own story while carrying on themes from the first movie, thanks to writing from Frank Darabont. He loves the effects and the insane gore and almost always goes on to watch The Fly II whenever he watches The Fly.

Crystal likes The Fly II almost as much as The Fly because there are clear antagonists that get what they deserve. She loves the music and the crazy effects of this real and true sequel. She also identifies Eric Stoltz as a phenomenal actor. The Fly II is far better than Jeff remembers it being. He specifically calls out the cast, the story, the original creature, and the practical effects.

If you haven’t seen The Fly II in a while, it’s time to check it out again. While you’re at it, make it a double feature with The Fly and throw in another listen to THE FLY (1986) — Episode 91 — Decades Of Horror 1980s. At the time of this writing, The Fly II is available to stream from HBOmax and as physical media on one of five Blu-ray discs included in Scream Factory’s The Fly Collection. Also included in The Fly Collection are The Fly (1958), Return of the Fly (1959), Curse of the Fly (1965), and The Fly (1986).

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Crystal, will be Krull (1983)! You asked for it!

Con artist Marilyn Fryser tries to sell bogus real estate deals in an area overrun by giant ants.

IMDb

Chad chose Empire of the Ants, his second H. G. Wells-related pick in a row after The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977) in episode 166 and his second Bert I. Gordon pick after War of the Colossal Beast (1958) on episode 80 of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era. (This is also the second Bert I. Gordon film featured on Decades of Horror 1970s after Food of the Gods (1976) on episode 28.) Chad does recognize his hometown where some of Empire of the Ants is shot, but it is not a terribly good movie, just terrible. To him, it feels like a TV Movie of the Week. The nasty effects and nasty acting, however, are not counterbalanced by how big the ants are.

Robert Lansing is a plus for Jeff in Empire of the Ants but Joan Collins is a minus. Add in the terrible effects and jeff is in agreement with Chad. The movie is just terrible. Even though the movie is bad from its dreadful beginning to its terrible ending, Bill retains an affection for Bert I. Gordon and his work even though it doesn’t work well in Empire of the Ants. Waiting for a bunch of unlikable characters to start dying is a bit of a drag. Doc is on board with the TV-movie-of-the-week feel to Empire of the Ants, adding that it is just bad and boring. To him, it seems workmanlike, but there is no pizazz to hold a viewer’s interest. This one definitely fits into the “not-so-good” classification.

The Grue-Crew also go through some feedback, during which they promised to provide the link to Grue-Believer Scott’s “erratically published” blog, so here it is. Check out his musings at  Saturday Mad Theater.

If for any reason imaginable, you’re looking for a way to watch Empire of the Ants, as of this writing, it is streaming from Plex w/ads and as PPV from Apple TV and Amazon.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. When Katherine, a beautiful Southern girl obsessed with thoughts of eternal life, invites Count Alucard to come to her mansion in the U.S., she unleashes a Pandora’s box of horror on unsuspecting relatives and neighbors.

IMDb

Son of Dracula is Chad’s pick and he’s surprised at how much he likes it! For him, Lon Chaney Jr. has an imposing presence as Count Alucard/Dracula even though he is sans accent and doesn’t feel as dignified as Lugosi’s version. Overall he thinks it’s a cool story and the effects were better than he expected; especially the smoke/vapor transformations.

For Daphne, Son of Dracula feels more like Kay’s (Louis Allbritton) story than Dracula’s. Although Lon Chaney Jr. is physically imposing as Dracula, she is a little let down by his performance. She is, however, impressed with some of the actors and Robert Paige’s performance as Frank reminds her a little of some of George Bailey’s (James Stewart) frantic dashes to come in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).

On the surface, Son of Dracula felt a little lame to Jeff but once he got into it, it was better than he remembered. He also loves the smoke effects and the bat transformations and really appreciates the character of Queen Zimba, as short as her appearance is. The Classic Era Grue-Crew universally lament the plight of poor, poor, pitiful Frank.

As of this writing, Son of Dracula is currently available to stream from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV, Tubi, Plex, and various PPV options. Of course, the Blu-ray is available in Dracula: Complete Legacy Collection [Blu-ray] and Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection [Blu-ray].

FEEDBACK

Don Joe: Doc is going beast mode with the beard! Haha!  I do enjoy this new News segment and wish I'd discovered you guys sooner. Saw 10 - bring it on, I love this series so much.  I'd love a reboot (not happening, I know) to bring John Kramer back. I'm down with any King adaptation, no matter how good or bad it turns out, they're always interesting. All of those new streaming films look good but since I've never seen Orphan and ending got spoiled for me, I'm looking forward to watching them both now. Lisa Frankenstein - love the many takes on this story and how it has become it's own sub-genre of horror. GDT's COC (lol) - amazing, looks so good and makes me extra excited for my fav time of year.

“What… the eff was that?” That’s a very good question! Join your faithful Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr  – as they check out this legendary low-budget film with big-budget effects, The Deadly Spawn (1983).

Alien creatures invade a small town and four teenagers, along with a young boy, attempt to escape from them.

IMDb

The Deadly Spawn is Jeff’s pick by way of Doc Rotten. For him, this movie is balls out once the title characters appear. Charles, the film’s monster kid, saves the day while everyone else flounders. He loves the scene with the women’s group, the head removals, and the body thrown out the upstairs window.

Chad first heard of The Deadly Spawn in Fangoria, but it never seemed to be available for him to view it. He finally got it on DVD and holy cow, he loves this movie. The creature is absolutely bonkers and with characters that are interesting, the movie is a fun-as-hell, crazy romp. Crystal can’t believe how low-budget The Deadly Spawn is and how good the acting and the special effects are. Bill also first heard of The Deadly Spawn in Fangoria but assumed it would be one of those movies where the monster looked good in the stills but not so good in the movie. Instead, he found a really good, practically iconic creature feature. It’s hard to believe the budget is so low and yet the monster is better than those in some pictures from Holywood with much bigger budgets.

If you haven’t seen this legendary film, the 80s Grue-Crew command that you do. As of this writing, The Deadly Spawn is streaming from Shudder and is available on DVD from Synapse Films.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be The Fly II (1989) with Eric Stoltz and Daphne Zuniga and directed by Chris Walas.

An outlaw smuggler and her alien companion are recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy to rescue his son and destroy a mysterious superweapon designed by the evil Count Zarth Arn

Bill picked this one and he remembers originally liking Starcrash a lot more than he does this time around. Caroline Munro is still fetching, even though Candy Clark dubs her, but every actor seems to be acting in a different movie. There is a colorful, comic-book style to this weird oddball movie, but as Bill points out, sometimes you can’t go back again.

Jeff has been wanting to see Starcrash since Decades of Horror 1980s covered Maniac, another film starring Caroline Munro and Joe Spinell. Jeff sees the obvious similarities to the recently released Star Wars (1977), but the bad dialogue and long, drawn-out fight scenes cause Starcrash to… crash. Doc remembers great-looking stills in magazines of the time, but their quality does not lead to a good film. The dubbing is laughably bad and the movie is just awful. Still, there is a sort of weird charm to it.

If you have a hankering for late-70s, cheesy, space opera, Starcrash is available to stream with ads from multiple services, and on physical media as a Shout Factory! Blu-ray.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. A taxidermist decides to murder his wife after having to put up with her after twenty years of hellish marriage.

IMDb

The Skeleton of Mrs. Morales is Whitney’s pick and is, as she describes it, a black comedy complete with los tóxicas y chismosas (the toxic and the gossipy). The unhealthy relationships in the film lead to murder with a dose of humor. Daphne loves The Skeleton of Mrs. Morales, lauding its atmosphere, its beautiful cinematography, and its winning combination of the grim and the playful. The Skeleton of Mrs. Morales got funnier each time Jeff watched it, even though there are some very disturbing events in the film. Its award-winning cast and crew, including the director of Ship of Monsters (La nave de los monstruos, 1960), have created a tour de force in The Skeleton of Mrs. Morales.

An old antique ring turns a college professor into a homicidal maniac when he puts it on. The ring originally belonged to Jack the Ripper, and the Ripper’s spirit possesses whoever wears it.

The Ripper caught Chad’s eye as it had many times on the video rental store shelf, but this time he went for it. The verdict? He’s never seen such a long, drawn-out movie where entire scenes were of no use and were stretched out for no reason. He chose this movie for the 80s Grue Crew because of the presence of Tom Savini, who plays the title character, but he wasn’t enough to outweigh the bad.

Bill also loves Tom Savini, but not this film in which even the padding is padded and long dialogue scenes go nowhere. On the plus side, the effects work is fairly well done for lowbudget gore. Agreeing with Chad and Bill, Jeff describes the script as mundane with very bad jokes. He likes the general idea of the story but the execution needed to capitalize on that idea is missing from The Ripper.

If you’re a Savini completist or just want to see what the 80s Grue Crew is talking about, at the time of this writing, The Ripper can be streamed from Tubi and Screambox.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be The Deadly Spawn (1983), filmed in artist Tim Hildebrandt’s house and featuring the effects of John Dods!

Synopsis: Masked wrestling champion and occasional crime fighter El Santo once again saves Mexico from the ravages of undying monsters in this blend of grappling and horror. While the great fighter is busy in the ring, two legendary monsters, the vampire Dracula and a werewolf named Rufus Rex are brought back to life by his enemies. As the monsters roam free and threaten the life of El Santo’s closest friends, he teams up with fellow wrestling icon Blue Demon to vanquish the creatures once and for all.

Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man is Jeff’s pick. He was turned on to the El Santo films by Joseph Perry, one of the founding hosts of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era and though it took him a while to get into the feel of the films, he loves them unabashedly now.

Bill likes any creator who lives the role and you can’t live the role any more than the luchadors enmascarado do. They even kiss their girlfriends with the mask on. You gotta love that! And just for kicks, the film opens and closes with wrestling matches. Chad has always enjoyed these movies and is impressed by the production values and vivid colors in this entry in the El Santo canon. And, as always, he digs the monsters and the wrestling. Once he warmed up to it, Doc had a great time with Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man as well. He admits that it takes a special mindset to enjoy these, the dumbest but most fun, movies.

Once you learn to love these films you won’t be able to get enough of them. Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man is available to stream from Tubi and Amazon Prime as PPV, and on physical media as one of the titles included in “Santo: El Enmascarado De Plata” Blu-ray Boxset from VCI Entertainment.

A Carpathian village is haunted by the ghost of a murderous little girl, prompting a coroner and a medical student to uncover her secrets while a witch attempts to protect the villagers.

Daphne picked this Bava classic and she loves Kill, Baby… Kill! right from the opening scene in which a distraught woman impales herself on wrought iron fence spikes. From the costumes to the atmospheric village, she’s all in. Chad was never drawn in by the title or the poster, but now that he’s seen Kill, Baby… Kill!, he thinks it’s a beautiful movie. It has that Bava look and feel with almost a Hammer, gothic sensibility. Jeff’s first thought is, “Not another Italian horror movie with a creepy kid,” but now, Kill, Baby… Kill! is one of his favorite horror movies. He loves everything about it – story, cinematography, acting, set design – and it’s scary as well.

In a strange marketing ploy, Kill, Baby… Kill! was given a new title, paired with two other films, and the resulting retitled trio was billed as Orgy of the Living Dead.” As promised on the podcast, here is a link to the “Orgy of the Living Dead” Trailer.

The Classic Era Grue Crew strongly recommends Kill, Baby… Kill! At the time of this writing, the film is available to stream on the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV, Shudder, and Kanopy, and on physical media as a Kino Classics Blu-ray.

This is the ninth Mario Bava film covered by Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror Grue Crews. You can check them out here:

A college student, who accidentally killed his mother as a child, decides to take his friends to his father’s fishing cabin during fall break, not knowing that his crazed father is stalking the place.

Crystal chose The Mutilator when she saw that a sequel had just wrapped filming and is scheduled for a September 2022 release. According to her, this is not a case of so-bad-it’s-good, it’s just bad. It’s strange and weird and there are no surprises in the story. On the plus side, there is some decent gore.

Chad views The Mutilator as a cross between a Mentos commercial and Growing Pains (TV Series, 1985-1992). In other words, it’s not good. He’s also puzzled by the lead not being bothered at all by the deaths of friends. However, it’s great to see some of Mark Shostrum’s early effects work and there are some creative kills. The actors in The Mutilator give it the old college try with their attempts at campy humor but they are not supported in their efforts by the script, according to Jeff. For him, the only positive is Mark Shostrum’s effects work.

To summarize, your 80s Grue-Crew is none too enamored with The Mutilator, but if you’re a Mark Shostrum fan or want to prepare for the sequel’s release, you might still want to check it out. As of this writing, The Mutilator is available to stream free with ads from Tubi and from multiple subscription services, including Shudder and Arrow. In terms of physical media, The Mutilator (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray + DVD ] is available from Arrow Video.

“She is a disturbing child.” It doesn’t reach the heights of his USS Indianapolis monologue in Jaws, but Robert Shaw delivers this line with grim resignation. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they check out A Reflection of Fear (1972), a relatively unknown film starring Sondra Locke, Robert Shaw, and Sally Kellerman.

A disturbed young girl starts believing that there is something very sinister at work after her estranged father visits her at her mother and grandmother’s house with the woman he plans to marry.

Doc chose A Reflection of Fear for the Jaws connection delivered by Robert Shaw in his starring role. He admits it’s kind of a stupid movie but he still enjoyed it for its 70s flavor. There are a few creepy elements present and he really likes Shaw’s and Sondra Locke’s performances.

Chad took one look at the cast and thought A Reflection of Fear would be a great movie, but instead, he is very bored with it all. Even though he loves Shaw and Locke in it, and yes, there were some creepy parts, he was expecting a whole lot more than a predictable twist. A Reflection of Fear got under Bill’s skin a little, but the two twists really date the movie. He thinks Sondra Locke is a perfect choice for her role and that Robert Shaw is terrific but there just isn’t enough there to maintain interest. Jeff doesn’t buy Sondra Locke as the teenager she is playing and points out some huge continuity jumps in a couple of the film’s edits. He enjoyed Sally Kellerman’s and Mitchell Ryan’s performances the most, but not enough to become a fan of A Reflection of Fear.

Your 1970s Grue Crew has a fairly lukewarm reaction to A Reflection of Fear, but if you are so inclined, it is available for viewing. At the time of this writing, the movie can be streamed from Tubi.

If you’re craving some more Shaw sauce to top off your summer, now would be a great time to revisit the Decades of Horror 1970s 2-part episode on Jaws! You can check it out here:
