300: Rise of the Empire (2014) is hacking and slashing its gory way through the competition at the box office this weekend. The film is spectacular in its graphics, style and star Eva Green. While the grue-crew is not in 100 percent agreement, the conversation gets into the crazed violent, abundance of bloodshed and one specific line of dialog - which cannot be repeated here. If you have seen the film, you know the one!

Santos Ellin Jr. steps in for Thomas, who is off to SXSW, to provide this week's Top 5 discussing five of his favorite horror movie quotes. The man has a thing for colorful language, so the list is entertaining as ...well, you know. Dave, as always, has the Horror News of the Week and does not disappoint!

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., and Dave Dreher are back again this week for another fantastic episode of Horror News Radio, the official HorrorNews.Net podcast. BUT FIRST! Before we get too far into this episode's fantastic content, BIG NEWS! Announcing, the HNR grue-crew are going on the road with a horror convention tour spring 2014 beginning with The Mad Monster Party in Charlotte, North Carolina, March 21-23. SEE YOU THERE! Be sure to go to their Facebook page and give them a like. Tell 'em Horror News Radio sent you!

MadMonsterParty

00:03:50 – 300: Rise of the Empire
While the film is all about the beefy men behind Greece and the 300, it is Eva Green as Artemisia that wins all the praise and love from the HNR crew. She is spectacular and the best thing in 300: Rise of the Empire. Santos is also all about the over-the-top bloodshed and action the film offers while Dave is impressed with the 3D. Doc, however, has issues but admits it may be more about the screening experience than that actual film. You need to listen to understand that debacle. The grue-crew review the film in all its 3D gory mayhem.

00:40:30 – Top 5 Horror Quotes
The Black Saint steps in for Thomas to bring his Top 5 for the week jumping on the crew's favorite line from the film bringing his Top 5 horror movie quotes. Santos relishes the opportunity to re-enact each and every quote and then puts Doc and Dave on the spot to drop their favorite as well.

  1. Dead Alive (1992) - "I kick ass for the Lord!"
  2. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) - "You gotta be f@%king kidding..."
  3. They Live  (1988) - "I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I am all out of bubble gum."
  4. Child's Play 3  (1991) - "Don't f@%k with the Chuck!"
  5. Phantasm  (1979) - "BOY!"

00:46:17 - Horror News of the Week for 03/10/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with the teaser trailer for Fear Clinic from director Robert Hall. Sticking with trailers, up next is the red band delight that is Stage Fright from director Jerome Sable featuring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. The action-packed TV spot and kick ass stills for The Raid 2 excite the crew. It looks like a 4K transfer of the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is on its way to theaters this fall. And, last but not least, Mondo has release a spectacular exclusive poster to promote this summer's Godzilla.

01:01:30 - Anchor Bay Blu-Ray Prize Pack Giveaway - In Fear and No One Lives
Horror News Radio is teaming up with Anchor Bay to provide a sweet, sweet Blu-Ray Prize Pack featuring the film In Fear, currently out on VOD and DVD (as of March 11, 2014). The film is from director Jeremy Lovering and it features Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), Iain De Caestecker (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Allen Leech (Downton Abbey). The prize pack also comes with a second feature, No One Lives. Wow! That's incredible! If you live in the U.S. (sorry U.S. only), you have until Midnight March 23, 2014 to get your name in the hat. Patrick: Evil Awakens (2014) is a modern retelling of the 1979 Aussie hit, Patrick. In the remake, Sharni Vinson steps into the lead role as the nurse taking care of the titular character who lies in a coma at a private psychiatric hospital. If you have seen the original, you know that Patrick holds a deadly, terrifying secret. The grue-crew get the opportunity to view and recap the film on this episode of Horror News Radio.

Santos Ellin Jr. steps in for Thomas, who is off to SXSW, to provide this week's Top 5 discussing five obscure films that deserve a remake. Dave is back again with the Horror News of the Week discussing the Godzilla trailer, the next Terminator film and more information about the possible remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher and Vixen are back again this week for another fantastic episode of Horror News Radio, the official HorrorNews.Net podcast. BUT FIRST! Before we get too far into this episode's fantastic content, BIG NEWS! 00:06:00 – Patrick: Evil Awakens
The HNR grue-crew often share their love for actress Sharni Vinson who impressed in You're Next. She is back with Patrick: Evil Awakens, a remake of the Richard Franklin film from 1979. Going into the film, the crew is a little nervous of what they will find wondering if Patrick is a good choice to be remade. Thankfully, the response is unanimous, each host giving the film high marks enjoying the modern take, gorier, more frightening and with a great cast. Dave even compares the direction to Brian de Palma. What? Yes, he did.

00:34:34 - Horror News of the Week for 02/24/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with the announcement that Vincent D'Onofrio has joined the cast for Jurassic World. With all the remake talk is it really that surprising that word of the remake of The Birds is resurfacing. Terminator: Genesis news is up next where the creative team behind the script are saying it resembles Back to the Future 2. What? The Godzilla trailer is just too damn good to not bring up this week. Roar, baby, roar! And, of course, everything is better with a little Bacon and Dave shares the commercial Kevin Bacon stars in where he reprises many of his famous roles including Friday the 13th (1980). Wow! Finally, Bacon owns up. Yay!

00:51:50 – Top 5 Horror Films Needing a Remake
The Black Saint steps in for Thomas to bring his Top 5 for the week. Sticking to the theme of remakes with the film Patrick: Evil Awakens, Santos compiles his Top 5 horror films that deserve a remake in the eyes of the HNR Grue-crew.

  1. Fiend Without A Face (1958)
  2. Phase IV (1974)
  3. Let's Scare Jessica To Death  (1971)
  4. Chosen Survivors  (1974)
  5. The Flesh Eaters  (1964)

Knights of Badassdom (2014) from director Joe Lynch is a film with a troubled past, surviving struggles and hardships on its journey to VOD and DVD release. The film remains in the minds of fan anticipating its release. The HNR grue-crew tackle the film to see if the wait was worth it, to see if it lives up to the hype and the suspense.

Thomas continues the theme with the Top Horror Comedies of the week talking about Gremlins, a comedic Leatherface and the always brilliant Tom Atkins. Doc steps in to discuss the premiere showing of a low budget independent feature from North Carolina director Brett Mullen called Bombshell Bloodbath. Dave ends the show with the Horror News of the Week with information about GodzillaGuardians of the Galaxy and a loving tribute to Harold Ramis.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani are back again this week for another fantastic episode of Horror News Radio, the official HorrorNews.Net podcast.

00:02:32 – Knights of Badassdom
Director Joe Lynch teams up with writers Kevin Dreyfuss and Matt Wall to film a horror comedy about LARPing. What? Yup. LARPing. The film, Knights of Badassdom, centers around a band of live action role-players who stumble across a long-lost tomb from the Middle Ages with spells that raise a killer, blood-thirsty succubus. The films stars fan favorites Ryan (True Blood) Kwanten, Steve (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) Zahn, Peter (Game of Thrones) Dinklage, Summer (Serenity/Firefly) Glau and Jimmi (White House Down / House of Cards) Simpson.

00:32:11 – Top 5 Horror Comedies
Thomas takes a look a the history of laughter mixed with terror, gore and scares that both delight and devour its audiences. Thomas presents his Top 5 Horror Comedies.

  1. House  (1986)
  2. Gremlins (1984)
  3. Night of the Creeps  (1986)
  4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2  (1986)
  5. The Frighteners  (1996)

00:50:25 - What Have You Been Watching - Bombshell Bloodbath
Doc is thrilled to share his experience at the Greensboro, North Carolina premiere of Brett Mullen's Bombshell Bloodbath, a promising independent film. The film has a heavy Italian cinema influence from the story structure to the cinematography to the music from Umberto. The film is full of zombie gore and zany antics and Doc sings high praises for the film and the director.

01:00:25 - Horror News of the Week for 02/24/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with sad news relating the death of comic legend Harold Ramis, most famously known as Dr. Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters (1984). The gang shares their fond memories of seeing his many films over the years. Dave can barely contain Doc's excitement as Thomas begins to talk about the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer from Marvel Entertainment and James (Slither) Gunn. Not to be one-and-done, Dave follows this up with news about Godzilla, the full shot is finally out there, the roar is now fully realized and the trailer is coming (it's here!). Bates Motel on A&E is getting its own "after-show" much like The Talking Dead. Dave is thoroughly creeped out by the icky, spider-y chills in the poster released for Utero. Yuck!

Robocop (2014) revisits the territory blazed by Paul Verhoeven in the 1987 original film, except watered down for a PG-13 audience. To be fair, the remake is geared more as a straight-laced action flick with heavy sci-fi overtones and one singularly frightening scene of extraordinary body-horror. What will the grue-crew think?

Thomas continues the theme with the Top 5 of the Week bringing his Top 5 Under Appreciated Remakes featuring films like Little Shop of HorrorsDawn of the Dead and 12 Monkeys. Wait. What? Yup, it's a remake.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani also tackle the "What You Have Been Watching" segment for this week discussing the hit HBO show, True Detective. Dave closes the show with the Horror News of the Week with updates on Penny DreadfulThe Purge: Anarchy and Beetlejuice 2

00:02:22 – Robocop
Jose Padilha directs the modernization of the campy classic with his film, Robocop (2014). The film shifts its focus away from the camp and the satire to bring a drama heavy action flick with varying success. Vixen, sharing her passion for robot films, sings high praises for the film, opinions shared by Doc. However, Thomas is less than impressed while still finding many elements to enjoy. Dave rides in the middle for what Thomas proclaims to be a very middling film. Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton dominate most of the conversation while the comparisons to the original 1987 film are unavoidable.

00:41:25 – Top 5 Under Appreciated Remakes
Thomas takes a look a the history of remakes scouring for a collection of re-imagined films that succeeded but were never given enough respect with his Top 5 Under Appreciated Remakes.

  1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers  (1978)
  2. Little Shop of Horrors  (1986)
  3. The Blob (1988)
  4. Twelve Monkeys  (1995)
  5. Dawn of the Dead  (2004)

01:00:05 - What Have You Been Watching - HBO's True Detective
Thomas and Dave share how incredible HBO's True Detective has become over the past five weeks. Much of the success of the show rides on the shoulders of its two stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, along with its ground breaking multiple time line structure. Highly recommended television.

01:11:05 - Horror News of the Week for 02/10/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with rumors of renewed discussions between Michael Keaton and Tim Burton about returning to Beetlejuice 2. Horror on TV is huge this spring with Dave spotlighting the new Hannibal and Penny Dreadful trailers. Just for Santos, Dave shares news that Jessica Alba has signed to star in a found footage film called The Veil. Chiller TV is releasing a documentary from the team behind Cropsy called Killer Legends. And the trailer for The Purge: Anarchy has the grue-crew curious about the upcoming sequel.

Nurse 3D is a campy, trashy but oddly entertaining new release from director Douglas Aarniokoski starring Paz de la Huerta as Abigail Russel a psychotic, murderous nurse with a passion for blood and mayhem. The HNR grue-crew review the gory, R-Rated slasher-fest.

Thomas continues the theme with the Top 5 of the Week bringing his Top 5 Homicidal Women in Horror featuring films like Fatal AttractionThe Devil's Rejects and the underrated, under-appreciated Orphan.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani also tackle the "What You Have Been Watching" segment for this week discussing the hit animated film, The Lego Movie. Dave closes the show with the Horror News of the Week with updates on The Walking DeadBates Motel and Zombeavers. Wait. What? Zombeavers? Oh, yeah!

00:02:22 – Nurse 3D
Can the HNR crew really take Nurse 3D seriously? Is it the Showgirls of horror? High camp or pure garbage? The grew crew are here to answers those questions and much, much more. Bwah-hah-hah. Nurse 3D is a goofy, satirical horror slasher film with an outrageous (and somewhat frustrating) lead performance from its uber-hot star, Paz de la Huerta.

00:28:42 – Top 5 Homicidal Women in Horror
What better way to celebrate the insanity in Nurse 3D than to revisit some of the most notoriously unstable women in cinema with Thomas Mariani's Top 5 Homicidal Women in Horror.

  1. Ophan (2009) - Ester (Isabelle Fuhrman)
  2. Fatal Attraction (1987) - Alex Forrest (Glenn Glose)
  3. House of 1,000 Corpses / The Devil's Rejects (2003/2005) - Baby Firefly (Sherri Moon Zombie)
  4. Single White Female (1992) - Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh)
  5. Friday the 13th (1999) - Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer)

00:39:35 - What Have You Been Watching - The Lego Movie
Thomas, Santos and Doc love The Lego Movie far too much to let its release go totally unnoticed. The HNR gang share their thoughts of and appreciation for this delightful, imaginative film.

00:49:01 - Horror News of the Week for 02/10/2014
Dave Dreher starts off the Horror News of the Week with the return of AMC's The Walking Dead. The whole gang chimes in on what they thought of the hit zombie TV's shows first show of its second half of season 4. IFC Midnight is releasing a found footage film called The Den. The trailer has caught Dave's imagination. Stephen King shows up a lot in HNR News and this week it is all about The Cell. Horror is terrorizing TV across the dials, Dave spotlights the full trailer for season 2 of Bates Motel. Then Doc cannot believe his ears, there is a movie called Zombeavers? Woot!

I, Frankenstein  tanked at the box office this weekend, but that does not stop the grue-crew from recapping and reviewing the overblown, dull adaptation of the graphic novel presented as if it were an extension of the Underworld films. Aaron Eckhart is cast as the Frankenstein Monster in the film directed by Stuart Beattie. Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, rally together having survived the droll I, Frankenstein as they slam the film.

Thomas introduces a new segment to show this week with his Top 5 of the Week. For episode 43, he brings the grue-crew’s favorite Frankenstein Monsters: the top 5 Frankenstein films to watch instead of I, Frankenstein. Hell, yeah – of course, Boris Karloff is on the list, but the others will likely surprise you!

Santos finally convinces the crew to watch Found, a film he has been championing since judging the New York Horror Film Festival in November. To his great pleasure, Dave shares his love for this film; Thomas and Doc, however, share their reservations.

00:04:15 – I, Frankenstein
Based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux (who also stars in the film), Stuear Beattie’s directorial effort,I, Frankenstein struggles to impress the grew-crew winning only the faintest praise from Doc and Vixen, “I didn’t hate it.” The film mixes the Frankenstein Monster with Demons and Gargoyles in the style of the Underworld movies. It has all this including Miranda Otto and Bill Nighy as opposing heads of supernatural clans, yet the film fails to elicite all that much excitement. Yet, Santos admits the film looks great and he has a little crush on Yvonne Strahovski.

00:25:30 – Top 5: Frankenstein Monsters
This week brings a new segment to the show, a Top 5 of the Week. Thomas champions the top 5 Frankenstein Monsters to watch instead of I, Frankenstein. Drawn the from decades of horror and the collective, diverse favorites from the HNR grue-crew, Thomas starts off with the classic, iconic Boris Karloff but quickly dives into fondly remembered and surprisingly obscure collection of Frankenstein Monsters in horror cinema.

  1. Boris Karloff – Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939)
  2. Peter Boyle – Young Frankenstein (1973)
  3. Tom Noonan – Monster Squad (1987)
  4. Clancy Brown – The Bride (1985)
  5. Koji Furuhata – Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965)

00:34:50 What Have You Been Watching: Found
Santos is finally able to share the independent shocker, Found, with the HNR crew this week, quickly converting Dave into a follower. The film is a shocking tale of a young boy who discovers his brother may be a serial killer. The film gets bizarre quick in an intense and sometimes perverse character study. Doc and Thomas are impressed but not a high on the final product. Regardless of the opinion, the film is hard to forget, visceral and entirely engaging.

00:50:10 - Horror News of the Week for 01/27/2014
Dave Dreher wraps up the show with another fascinating round of Horror News of the Week. Dead Snow: Dead vs Red makes another appearance on the show with the release of its first full trailer, terrific reviews from Sundance Film Festival and a distribution deal is signed. Gory goodness! Dave hands the floor over to Thomas to discuss the new trailer from the latest Terry Gilliam film, Zero Theorem as the grue-crew try to figure out what the heck it is all about. Scream Factory is in the news again with its upcoming release of Dog SoldiersAmerican Horror Story: Coven ends this week with Dave inviting theories and thoughts from the HNR crew. As you know, Doc loves 3D and Doc loves found footage; Dave makes his day with the news of a new film titled Found Footage 3D.

Devil’s Due not only tries to bring on the apocalypse, the end of the world as we know it, but it also tries to kill off the entire found footage sub-genre. It is so god-awful, it has Thomas in fumes and Santos ranting and Doc nearly in tears, weeping for his beloved cinema-verite. Oh, the horror!

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, two members of the group Radio Silence, bring their promising talent to the exorcism/Rosemary’s-Baby films. But instead of expanding on the promise they displayed in the final chapter of VHS, “10/31/98,” they rely too heavily on the tricks found in that short stretched out to fill the 90 minutes of Devil’s Due.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher,  and Thomas Mariani rake Devil’s Due over the coals, tearing it apart frame by frame, sequence by sequence. Thankfully, Dave Dreher is here tonight to bring the Horror News of the Week and give the grue-crew some hope for better things: HannibalRavenous and The Quiet Ones.

00:04:15 – Devil’s Due
January is often the dumping ground of weak-ass horror and genre films. Recently, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones shows some promise this year may be different (Sorry, Santos), but this week’s release,Devil’s Due makes it hard to argue against this idea. Sigh. The entire cast of HNR are unimpressed with the first full length feature from the guys known as Radio Silence. Devil’s Due is a disaster, but it provides plenty to talk about, no doubt.

00:40:17 - Horror News of the Week for 01/20/2014
Dave Dreher steps in to bring the Horror News of the Weeks starting off with fantastic casting news: Katherine Isabelle is joining the cast of the hit NBC spring TV show Hannibal. Yay! Both Fear Clinic andCooties pick up distribution deals giving horror fans two promising horror films to look forward to. The teaser for Hammer Film’s The Quiet Ones promises some spectacular ghostly goodness. Scream Factory is in the news – again! – with the announcement of the upcoming Ravenous (1999) Blu-Ray release. And more news is abound for The Conjuring spin-off featuring the Annabelle doll.

The Top 10 Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2104 contains a number of high profile horror and genre films. Who isn't excited about Godzilla? If you loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes, then the promise of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes should have you giddy with glee.  And for the hard core horror fans, Eli Roth's cannibal epic The Green Inferno is right up your alley. The list also has a few low budget surprises too.

But! Before we get to the list, the grue-crew has a special guest on board, director Blair Erickson is here to discuss his horror film The Banshee Chapter, currently available on VOD and coming in February on DVD/BluRay. He sticks around to discuss Spike Jonze's Her in this week's What Have You Been Watching Segment.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Vixen are all astonished at the knowledge Blair Erickson drops on the crew and share his love for Spike Jonze's celebrated, Golden Globe winning Her - well, most everyone. Woot! The top ten has the crew excited for the coming year, with Godzilla topping the list. Dave brings the Horror News of the Week with word on the Friday the 13th reboot, the Walking Dead spin off and a possible True Blood film.

00:03:47 – Interview: Blair Erickson, director of The Banshee Chapter
Horror News Radio covered The Banshee Chapter in episode 36. Now, the director, Blair Erickson joins the crew to discuss the making of the film, the conspiracy theories and influences behind the film and a secret or two about the film. It's an incredible interview with a bright new name in horror.

00:49:18 - What Have You Been Watching: Spike Jonze's Her
Blair Erickson sticks around to discuss one of his favorites films with the crew in the What You Have Been Watching segment, Spike Jonze's Her. It's a complete love fest for the film as Dave, Thomas, Vixen and Blair go over all the highlights of the film praising its story, message, themes, acting and directing with Dave especially high on the film's script. Doc, however, is an odd duck and did not like the film as much and gets a mighty trouncing for it. Haha!

01:11:56- The Top 10 Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2014
Looking into the schedule for 2014, the grue-crew select the top 10 most anticipated horror films of the year.

  • Oculus
  • The Quiet Ones
  • Godzilla
  • The Sacrament
  • Deliver Us From Evil
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  • The Green Inferno
  • Poltergeist (NOTE: two days after recording the Nov. 14th date is pushed to Feb 13, 2015)
  • Horns
  • Dead Snow: Red vs Dead

01:45:18- Horror News of the Week - 01/13/2014
Dave caps off the night with the horror news of the week. No one is in favor of a Friday the 13th film without Jason Voorhees, even if Doc is in favor of the found footage angle. Again, the entire crew would prefer to stick to the main Walking Dead story line instead of diluting it with a spin off - at least, at this point. The Clown trailer looks fantastic! There's a new trailer and artwork for the El Rey TV show based on From Dusk Til Dawn. And what is this rumor of a True Blood film in 2016?

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is the first theatrical horror film of 2014 and a spin off title for the successful (at least financially) franchise, Paranormal Activity. With The Marked Ones, the series heads across town to Oxnard, California providing a Latin themed variation on the popular found footage haunts.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher,  and Vixen takes sides in loving and hating what is essentially Paranormal Activity 4.5 giving a SPOILER FILLED recap and review of the Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Dave begins the new year off with the Horror News of the Week featuring the announcement of a Starship Troopers remake, updates on the Robocop remake and tons of shout outs to Bill Oberst, Jr.

00:03:41 – Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
In his review of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones for HorrorNews.Net, Doc highlights the keyword "fun" saying the film is a return to form. Vixen agrees and Dave is on basically on board; however, Santos is ready to call "BS!" His poor reaction to the film ignites a terrific conversation about the good, the bad and the ugly in the film. You don't want to miss this.

00:41:15 - Horror News of the Week for 12/30/2013
Dave shines a magical bright New Years light on the first Horror News of the Week for 2014. He starts off with a ton of news for HNR favorite, Bill Oberst Jr., with announcements about Circus of the Dead and Children of Sorrow. The ghost tale Cassadaga is up next with an impressive 12 minute making of video supporting the film's DVD/BluRay release. Santos, hell, the entire crew, is shocked with the announcement of a remake of Starship Troopers - and just wait to hear the blasphemous spin they may be taking. Robocop has released a ton of images for the film which is giving some of the cast hope that the film may be good, but not everyone. Oh, Santos. Netflix is adding 47 new horror films to its roster and Dave has a few highlights.

Again this year, that film is another film in the trilogy of The Hobbit movies, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And just like last  year, Santos gets a good nap. What? Yes, the adventures of the wandering Hobbit put your favorite New York podcast host to sleep. Sigh. On the other side, Doc shares his love for the film, the 3D and the high frame rate experience while Thomas counters most everything Doc loves. Still, everyone agrees the film has its moments, including the incredible execution of the dragon Smaug. But, that ending. Woof!

The film has the everyone at odds as Dave and Thomas enjoy the film for its imagination, gore and concept while Vixen and Doc have too much difficulty dealing with all the stupid characters, decisions and plot devices. 00:02:37 – Review of The the Dark World (2013)
The grue-crew dramatically leap right into the review of the latest Marvel Studios megaplex monster, Thor the Dark World. While everyone blasts the villain of the film, the dark elf Malekith, as a weak excuse for a cinematic bad guy with a confusing, convoluted and unmotivated drive to return the universe to the darkness, they love the relationship between Thor and Loki. Director Alan Taylor strikes superhero gold with the Thunder God's latest adventure in Asgard.

00:45:56– Horror News of the Week for 11/11/2013

Another Dark Sky film is up next with the anthology horror film, XX, featuring a collection of female directors. Marvel Studios and Netflix sign a deal to bring four 13 episode series to the online outlet include DaredevilJessica JonesLuke Cage and Iron Fist. Next, Dave shares that Warner Brothers will be producing a variety of properties off their hit The Conjuring film, including a film about Annabelle. Up last is news about a film called The Neighbor by Marcus Dunstsn and Patrick Melton.

Ender's Game is finally here, 28 years in the making. Gavin Hood directs Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley in the teen friendly Sci-Fi adventure.

Horror News Radio co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Thomas Mariani and Vixen have mixed feelings on the results. Some of it works for most all the grue-crew while many have issues with the pacing, the characters and, in Dave's case, the film altogether. Doc tries to defend Ender's Game with only moderate success.

Dave continues with the Horror News of the Week and shares his visit to Robert Kurtzman's Mad FX Studio for a Halloween party where the guest of honor was none other than Freddy Kruger himself, Robert Englund.

00:04:00 – Review of Ender's Game (2013)
The grue-crew venture into Sci-Fi territory this week as they review Ender's Game from Gavin Hood. It does have aliens - well, almost. It does have bloodshed - uh, no, not really. Gasp, the horror in Ender's Game is the realization of the effects of Harrison Ford's character's manipulation of the young cast. It is devastating, an emotional hit to the gut. While Dave zoned out pretty quickly, Doc and Vixen generally liked it while both Santos and Thomas had stronger issues.

00:47:56 – What Have You Been Watching: Dave meets Robert Englund
Dave was fortunate to attend a special Halloween event at Robert Kurtzman's Mad FX Studio to support his school the Kurtzman Institute of Art. The guest of honor was Robert Englund the talented madman who plays Freddy Kruger - and is featured in over 140 films. Dave shares the event and his meeting of the modern horror icon.

00:52.31– Horror News of the Week for 11/04/2013
Dave rocks the horror news of the week beginning with news that Samuel L. Jackson has joined fellow 1408 co-star John Cusack for the screen adaptation of Stephen King's Cell to be directed by Paranormal Activity 2's Tod Williams. A pair of directors are up next with George Romero commenting about the lack of zombies in The Walking Dead and David Cronenberg cutting Stanley Kubrick below the knees for the lack of horror in The Shining. Thomas is not terribly interested in hearing about Eli Roth's The Green Inferno which had footage premiere this week. Michael Biehn finally released a trailer for his film Hidden in the Woods that is truly disturbing. And the Archie comics are going un-dead with Afterlife with Archie.

00:04:00 – Review of Hellbenders (2013)
The grue-crew are thoroughly disappointed with J.T. Petty's latest horror comedy. The notion of a group of priests whose sole function is to sin as much as possible so they can be called on to drag a demon back to hell should the need arise could be the stuff of horror dreams but the Horror News Radio co-hosts all seem to agree the director J.T. Petty misses a great opportunity with the adaptation of his graphic novel Hellbenders. Speckled with a handful of decent performances and a fun scene or two the film comes across as a great idea rather than a great film. The crew all agrees that they like the idea behind Hellbenders but each has issues that they discuss in depth.

00:39:28– Horror News of the Week for 10/28/2013
It’s news time and Dave is ready to update everyone on all the horror happenings of the week and first up is the R rated trailer for the new found footage paranormal spook-fest Skinwalker Ranch. While Dave is looking forward to this one everyone else seems a little less excited about it. Causing a little more excitement is the news that Clive Barker is taking over the reins of the remake of Hellraiser and he is insisting Doug Bradley come along for the ride. Then is to the small screen as Dave brings the gang up to speed on a new Vampire special airing on NBC and drops the news that all eight seasons of Dexter are heading to Netflix. We end the news segment discussing SNL and the hilarious fake trailer they made for a Wes Anderson horror film.

00:58:15 – What Have You Been Watching: Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights
Thomas is back from his trip to Orlando, Florida as he does what every horror fan in America wishes they could do: visit Universal Studios to participate in the park's annual Halloween Horror Nights. Thomas relates his trip through the many movie themed houses and mazes.

This week, Carrie White goes all super-supernatural on the grue-crew with the release of the Carrie remake from Kimberly Peirce, starring Chloe Grace Moretz.

Horror News Radio co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Thomas Mariani and Vixen rant and trash the remake of the Brian De Palma classic wondering what the hell the studio was really trying to accomplish. Instead of a thrilling retelling of the classic Stephen King story, they deliver a mediocre rehash of the familiar film from 1976.

Afterwards, Dave and Santos both share some horror documentaries they've been watching and Dave continues with the Horror News of the Week.

00:03:00 – Review of Carrie (2013)
What the hell happened? Carrie (2013) is not brilliant film Doc was hoping for. Thomas starts off by giving Doc grief about ever being excited for the remake of King's tale about a troubled teenage girl who discovers she has telekinesis powers. Carrie (1976) is one of the top 20 horror films of all time on many lists, but the remake struggles to come anywhere close to the original - or the grue-crew's expectations. The biggest complaint is how close to the remake the sticks to the Brian De Palma's film. Vixen offers a glimmer of hope suggesting Julianne Moore's performance was stellar and engaging. Santos, however, who reviews the film on HorrorNews.Net has far less positive comments. Sigh.

00:46:10 – What Have You Been Watching: Birth of the Living Dead & Crystal Lake Memories
In this weeks "What have you been watching" segment, Dave starts off with the film, Birth of the Living Dead. The film is a documentary about the making of George Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead (1968). Santos follows with the review of Crystal Lake Memories. This is a documentary all about the making of the Friday the 13th film series.

00:58:20– Horror News of the Week for 10/21/2013
Once again diligent Dave Dreher brings the Horror News of the Week beginning with a pair of Blu-ray releases, Nosferatu and Slumber Party Massacre. The teaser trailer for the short film adaptation of Stephen King's Grey Matter is out. Bruce Campbell has suggested, in his usual snarky manner, that Army of Darkness 2 is in pre-production with both Sam Raimi and Bruce involved. Thomas is livid about the news of Tim Burton working on the sequel, Beetleguice 2. Last up, David shares the "Living with Jigsaw" short.

01:26:19 – Sweepstakes for American Horror Story: Asylum Blu-ray
As if all this was not enough, Doc chimes in with a contest to win a copy of the American Horror Story: Asylum Blu-ray (US and Canada ONLY ). The sweepstakes end at Midnight (EST) on October 27, 2013, so get your entries in quickly.

00:02:13 – Interview with Mike Mendez, director of Big Ass Spider
The episode opens with director Mike Mendez taking us behind the scenes of his big bug horror/comedy Big Ass Spider. The crew discusses the films New York Comic Con panel and the fact that any film can be fixed by casting Lin Shaye in it. Mike relates the long road he had to travel to bring his giant spider to the screen. It’s a fun, fascinating look under the covers of a sure to be indie classic.

00:38:12 – Horror News of the Week for 10/14/2013
After the crew chats with Mike it’s time for news and Dave is up to the challenge and seeks everyone’s opinion on the record breaking debut of The Walking Dead Season Four as well as opening a discussion on what the first episode of the new season revealed. Next up is the casting of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a new disaster flick, the earth shaking San Andreas. Next is a lively discussion on Spike Lee’s retelling of Oldboy as a new clip was released and the team gets into the merits of this one getting remade and for the final story of the night Dave points out the fact that Amazon is now selling 100 classic horror themes for $1.09, just in time for the haunt season.

00:57:10 – Reviews of Machete Kills and Big Ass Spider
Once the crew recovers from all that new found knowledge it’s time to take on Machete Kills and everyone seems to have an opinion on this Robert Rodriguez directed sequel. Danny Trejo returns as the ex federal agent turned vigilante and as you would expect the action is high, the ladies are naked and plot is non-existent. Machete Kills did mpt fare well at the box office and it does not do much better with the grue-crew. On the other side of the coin, Big Ass Spider is brought up for review and it weaves a web the team is happy to get caught up in.

00:45:52 – Horror News of the Week for 9/30/2013
Dave Dreher’s horror news of the week begins with a top 10 films of 2013 list from Quentin Tarantino that made its way online this week. The list includes The ConjuringGravity and This is the End. But it is the inclusion of The Lone Ranger that sets the grue-crew off. Holy crud! Penny Dreadfulreleased a series of set photos that Dave wants to discuss but he quickly discovers the crew more interested in panning the trailer for I, Frankenstein. Even more controversial is the news that Showtime did not allow the writers of Dexter to kill off the character on the series finale. Next up is news of the Blu-ray release of Saturn 3 (1980) starring Farrah Fawcett, Kirk Douglas and Harvey Keitel. Last up is the news that Robert (The Walking Dead) Kirkman is announcing a new horror series to be released in 2014.

01:05:30 – Gravity from Alfonso Cauron, starring Sandra Bullock and  George Clooney
In a rare high tide, all five grue-crew members are together in the love and appreciation for Alfonso Cauron’s Gravity – the must-see film of 2013. The film is a beautiful example of art film meets energetic summer cinema. It is the most tense and thrilling 90 minutes ever committed to film while still full of emotion and tension. The cinematography is exquisite and the 3D is amazing. This film is destined to sweep the awards this coming spring.

Insidious Chapter 2 is the top film this weekend but co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Thomas Mariani and Vixen do not agree on how good or bad the film is. James Wan has delivered a direct follow up to his monster hit, Insidious (2011), but is it too convoluted a successor or is it an incredibly scary follow-up. Check out the podcast to find out. Thomas offers up the recommendation this week, the dark, comedy-horror film, Sightseers, and Dave once again delves into the horror news of the week.

0:03:10 – What You've Been Watching – Thomas recommends Sightseers
Sightseers is the latest film from director Ben Wheatley who gave us the incredible Kill List (2011) and also provided "U if for Unearthed" for The ABC's of Death. Thomas recently caught the film at a local Florida art house and shares high praise for the film's execution and humor. The film stars Alice Lowe and Steve Oram who also wrote the script. "It has one of the best endings for a film, especially a dark comedy film, in a while, and ending that will perplex the hell out of you" - Thomas.

00:08:30 – Insidious Chapter 2 recap and review
Insidious Chapter 2 may be the number one film for the box office on its release weekend, bringing in a whopping $41 million, but Thomas says it is far from number one in his eyes. And he is not alone, Santos also struggles to find much to like about the film. Doc and Vixen attempt to defend the film, but take it on the chin over and over. Most of the cast returns for the sequel including Lynn Shaye, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. The film begins immediately after the ending of the first film leaving the question who killed Elise. The Lambert family move into the home of Barbara Hershey and soon the spirits begin to show their frightening faces once again. At the same time, Specs and Tucker investigate the home of Elise for clues to the afterlife.

00:58:40 – Horror News of the Week for 9/16/2013
Dave Dreher’s horror news of the week begins with news of the third Insidious film being announced. With the incredible opening the $5 million budget film had, Insidious 3 is a no-brainer. Dave follows this up with news of the Halloween pitch video that has recently resurfaced. Would it have been better than Rob Zombie's Halloween films? Dave then highly recommends the Friday the 13th Blu-Ray set sharing that it is well worth the price: "This is the one." Danielle Harris and Kathrine Isabelle join the Soska Twins on See No Evil 2. Finally, Dave shares that the trailer for I Spit On Your Grave 2 is out.
