“Damn! Come out of the grave and run out of ammunition!” Resurrection without ordinance? Such a disappointment. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they discuss House (1986), a comedy horror picture with its acting roots in Eighties television. Decades of Horror 1980s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! Gruesome Magazine is partnering with the WICKED HORROR TV CHANNEL (https://wickedhorrortv.com/) which now includes video episodes of Decades of Horror 1980s and is available on Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, and its online website across all OTT platforms, as well as mobile, tablet, and desktop.
The rallying cry from the Grue Crew is, “Chad is back!” For his return episode, the crew picks an 80s movie that surely everyone has seen. Well, everyone but Jeff. The film is HOUSE, released in 1985… or is it 1986? Covered seven years ago by Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, and Thomas Mariani in episode 105, the current crew decided to revisit this comedy-horror feature. Starring some 80s TV icons – William Katt (The Greatest American Hero, 1981-1983), George Wendt (Cheers, 1982-1993), Richard Moll (Night Court, 1984-1992) – the cast, crew, and effects give them plenty to talk about and there’s plenty of taglines for Chad’s return. Welcome back, brother! At the time of this writing, House is available to stream from Tubi, PlutoTV, and Amazon Prime, as well as multiple PPV sources, and on physical media as a Blu-ray from Arrow Video. Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film chosen by Chad, will be Spookies (1985), a film whose making-of story might be more interesting than the movie itself.

“Gaze! Gaze on the fiery cross and return to the darkness of your cold tombs.” That’ll never work. They don’t have ears! Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr along with guest host Jerry Chandler – as they focus on The Ghost Galleon (1974), the third film in Amando de Ossorio’s Blind Dead series. Decades of Horror 1970s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! Decades of Horror 1970s is partnering with the WICKED HORROR TV CHANNEL (https://wickedhorrortv.com/) which now includes video episodes of the podcast and is available on Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, and its online website across all OTT platforms, as well as mobile, tablet, and desktop.
Guest host Jerry Chandler returns to tackle another chapter of the Knights Templar/Blind Dead franchise with The Ghost Galleon (1974). The ghoulish critters are trapped on a centuries-old galleon lost in a mist suspiciously tied to another dimension. [scratches head] Que? Ignore the wonky science and enjoy the brilliant Amando de Ossorio atmosphere and the spooky design of the Blind Dead themselves. The characters are (mostly) all despicable and the story is a bit… questionable. Regardless, you can’t deny the impact of the final scenes of the Knights rising out of the ocean, the seawater pouring from their eye sockets as they circle the surviving members for the final kill. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee! At the time of this writing, The Ghost Galleon is available to stream from Wicked Horror TV, Tubi, Full Moon, and Flix Fling as well as various PPV sources. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by guest host Bill, will be Daughters of Darkness (1971, Les lèvres rouges), an erotic horror film that provides another imagining into the “legend” of Elizabeth Báthory. Combine the “Old Dark House” genre with a voodoo-zombie picture and you get King of the Zombies (1941). This light-hearted, slightly cringy but entertaining B-Movie feature is well worth a look back at its style, impact, and cast. The film may not be widely remembered but it handles the genre with ease, humor, and a smidge of tension. The Grue-Crew examines the film’s contributions and missteps. Let the shenanigans begin. At the time of this writing, King of the Zombies is available for streaming from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Amazon Prime, MGM+, Screambox, Kanopy, and Tubi. Join the Grue-Crew and special guest host Renee St. Aubin as they revisit the sword-and-sorcery cult favorite, The Beatmaster (1982), from Phantasm director Don Coscarelli. The cast includes Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, Rip Torn, and John Amos. The film played so much on HBO that the acronym was jokingly referred to as, “Hey, Beastmaster’s On!” This film has it all: bat people, killer ferrets, black-dyed tigers, and much more. Casting choices that didn’t make the cut? Demi Moore as Kiri (played by Tanya Roberts) and Klaus Kinksi as Maax (played by Rip Torn). Could this be Jeff Mohr’s new favorite Eighties film? “I’d like you to tell the public that this whole abomination is hurting business. It’s ruining my plans for a housing project. Nobody wants to buy land with an ugly demon running loose.” Ah, but a good-looking demon is another story. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr along with guest host Dirk Rogers – as they scrutinize the legendary, … or infamous, Trog (1970)! Special guest-host Dirk Rogers joins the Grue Crew for this episode, picking the much-mentioned, often disparaged Trog (1970) which stars Joan Crawford (in her final film role) and Michael Gough. While the makeup/”mask” of Trog looks fantastic, the rest of the costume fails to live up to the title’s promise, generating more chuckles than gasps. The film is often cheesy and full of plot holes with ample amounts of questionable science; yet, somehow, Trog manages to be entertaining and fast-paced, wasting no time getting to the creature and the conflict between scientist Crawford and the corrupt town asshole Gough. Shenanigans ensue. The Grue-Crew share their thoughts on the film, the cast, and the effects of this early Seventies creature feature. At the time of this writing, Trog is available to stream from Dailymotion and various PPV sources. The film is available on physical media in Blu-ray format from Shout! Factory. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by guest host Jerry Chandler, will be The Ghost Galleon (1974, El buque maldito), the third film in Amando de Ossorio’s Blind Dead quartet of films. Grue Believer Celebration Shenanigans continues with this review of Countess Dracula (1971), selected by special guest host and Decades of Horror fan Gregory Crosby. In this episode, the Grue Crew tackles another Hammer film from the Seventies featuring the stunning and talented Ingrid Pitt in the title role. While the film has no fangs and has little to do with Dracula, it borrows heavily from the legends of Countess Bathory who is said to have bathed in the blood of virgins to restore her youth. Countess Dracula is far more serious and mature than many of Hammer’s offerings throughout the decade and is well worth a revisit. Check out the Grue-Crew discussion to discover why. The subgenre of horror-westerns is not often used. In 1966, however, Embassy Pictures released a pair of this mixed breed on a groovy double feature. Joining Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter (1966) is tonight’s feature discussion, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula (1966). Both of these genre mashups are directed by William Beaudine. Once again, Dracula is portrayed by John Carradine (House of Frankenstein, 1944; House of Dracula, 1945) and you might also recognize Chuck Courtney, who plays Billy the Kid, from (Pet Sematary, 1989). From there the cast becomes a who’s who of TV and Film Westerns character actors, putting Jeff in his happy place! Carradine once said this film was “the worst movie he ever acted in.” The Grue-Crew may have other thoughts. Check it out now and let us know what you think of this bizarre and fun blend of genres. At the time of this writing, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula is available for streaming from several different sources. The Grue Crew found the best resolution on the Classic Horror Movie Channel and Kanopy, but, among others, it can also be found on Tubi and Plex. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Jeff, is Beyond the Time Barrier (1960), directed by Edgar G. “Buddy’s a good boy, but he has what you might call basic hygiene problems.” Who knew? Join your faithful Grue Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr – as they take a trip to Buddy’s domain in this low-budget slasher centered around – wait for it – a Slaughterhouse (1987). Ah, Slaughterhouse (1987). “You’ll Never Get Out in One Piece!” is one enticing tagline while the second tagline, “Buddy Has an Axe to Grind. A Big Axe,” may give you a better idea of what you’re in for with this low-budget dark comedy slasher. The Grue Crew chuckles aimlessly at the humor, gags at the gruesome opening shots, and questions the film in general. As Bill says, at least it goes for Texas Chainsaw Massacre instead of Halloween. Snort, snort! Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. “Smells like cheese, looks like ham… [takes a bite of sandwich] Oh, no problem. It’s chicken.” Rest assured, Grue Believers. Nothing about this movie resembles chicken. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they dive into that strange vat of boiling acid known as Scream and Scream Again (1970)! First, take a killer film title and an equally killer poster. Then grab a bizarre tale that includes long (yet exciting) car chases, vampires (sort of), Frankenstein (sort of), Nazis (sort of), super Vulcan nerve pinches (sort of), and a bubbling vat of acid. Then cast it with three iconic horror actors and what do you get? Scream and Scream Again from Amicus, directed by Gordon Hessler, and featuring Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing. Even if all three are never in the same scene, the results are oddly compelling, yet … goofy and frustrating. Despite the negatives, this film has grown a cult following. What might the Grue Crew make of it? At the time of this writing, Scream and Scream Again is available to stream from Tubi and Freevee, as well as various PPV options. The film is available on physical media as a Special Edition Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they cover the last film standing from Doc Rotten’s and The Black Saint’s favorite 70s horror films, Hammer’s The Vampire Lovers (1970)! Can you believe that in over 200 episodes we have yet to cover Hammer’s The Vampire Lovers (1970)? Well, now is the time! Featuring Peter Cushing and Ingrid Pitt, this Roy Ward Baker classic is likely beloved by many Monster Kids growing up with Famous Monsters of Filmland and their many coffee table monster movie books as it was featured often in those beloved tomes. The film also stars Pippa Steel, Madeline Smith, Kate O’Mara, George Cole, Jon Finch, Ferdy Mayne, Dawn Adams, Harvey Hall, and John Forbes-Robertson. Hammer not only kicks off the 1970s but also their Karnstein trilogy with fangs, blood, and ample nudity. The Grue Crew share their thoughts on the film, the cast, and the trilogy. The Vampire Lovers is the last of the twenty films that Doc Rotten and The Black Saint chose as their ’70s favorites back in 2013, an event that led to the creation of the Decades of Horrors 1970s podcast. The two episodes were edited for video and rereleased in 2022. Below are links to those two landmark podcasts and episodes on the other two films in the Karnstgein Trilogy.
At the time of this writing, The Vampire Lovers is available to stream from Tubi, Freevee, and Flix Fling. The film is available on physical media as a Collectors Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. Shot at the same time as Dracula: Prince of Darkness, The Plague of the Zombies, and Rasputin the Mad Monk – all four released in 1966 – The Reptile was featured on a double bill stateside with Rasputin: The Mad Monk. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr – as they confront the over-the-top effects, excellent acting, and confusing story in The Beast Within (1982). Decades of Horror 1980s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! Decades of Horror 1980s is partnering with the WICKED HORROR TV CHANNEL (https://wickedhorrortv.com/) which now includes video episodes of 1980s and is available on Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, and its online website across all OTT platforms, as well as mobile, tablet, and desktop.
In the early 1980s, producer Harvey (The Goonies, The Lost Boys) Bernhard purchases an unfinished novel by Edward Levy and hires Tom (Fright Night, Child’s Play) Holland – his first feature film credit – to write the screenplay (from scratch). He follows this up by scooping up Philippe Mora, the talent behind Communion and The Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (cue blank stare), to direct. The result is the often maligned creature feature The Beast Within (1982) featuring Paul Clemens, Ronny Cox, Bibi Besch, Don Gordon, R. G. Armstrong, Katherine Moffat, L. Q. Jones, Logan Ramsey, Luke Askeew, John Dennis Johnston, Meschach Taylor, and Ron Soble. While the make-up effects by Thomas R. Burman (Prophecy, Altered States) are collectively praised, the premise received far more disparagingly negative critiques. Now it is time for the Grue Crew to settle the score. Is it a schlocky disaster or a grotesque cult-classic? At the time of this writing, The Beast Within is available for streaming from Tubi and as PPV from Amazon and AppleTV. The film is available on physical media in Blu-ray format from SHOUT! Factory. Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Grue Crew for their sestercentennial episode (that’s 250th, Grue Belivers), will be Gremlins (1984), with guest host Ralph Miller who is one of the effects artists who worked on the film as part of Chris Walas’ crew. What better way to celebrate the holidays than by examining the late Seventies feature Death Game (1977)? Actually, almost everything would be better. For those brave at heart, join the Grue Crew as they share their thoughts on the film recently remade as Knock Knock (2015) by Eli Roth. The film stars Sondra Locke, Colleen Camp, and Seymour Cassel. “The brain has many functions as you know. One is storing millions of facts, associations, and habits in… I call it a memory bank with millions of tiny deposit boxes. … I have only been successful in opening one deposit box which holds one particular memory.” This theory sounds a lot more scientific when uttered with a German accent. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, Doc Rotten, and Jeff Mohr – as they chill with Herbert J. Leder’s The Frozen Dead (1966). Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! ANNOUNCEMENT
This episode’s film has a talking, severed head with telepathic powers; a wall of arms ready to strangle anyone who comes near; a room of frozen Nazis waiting to be defrosted; and a mad-scientist hatching devious plots. What else do you want in your 1960s sci-fi/horror feature? With all this and more, The Frozen Dead (1966) is silly; it’s absurd; it features Dana Andrews hamming it up. Yet, it offers an entertainingly dumb 90 minutes of goofy no-good nonsense. At the time of this writing, The Frozen Dead is available for streaming on YouTube. Here are the other Classic Era episodes based on movies that include the involvement of Herbert J. Leder:
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Daphne, is The Reptile (1966)! “How do you go about killing a machine? It’s too heavy to hang and it’s too big to put in the gas chamber.” Firing squad? Ole Sparky? Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Jeff Mohr – as they return to the boob tube for another memorable, made-for-TV, horror movie from the 1970s: Killdozer (1974)! Look out, Duel (1971). Move over, The Car (1977). Talk to the hand, Maximum Overdrive (1986). ABC TV’s Killdozer (1974) is here to rule! Well, best intentions, eh? Based on a story by acclaimed writer Theodore Sturgeon, though he had little to do with the final script (according to the author’s account), this is the tale of a mysterious invisible force that possesses a Caterpillar D9 bulldozer to chase and mow down the cast (Clint Walker, Neville Brand, Carl Betz, Robert Urich, James Wainwright, James A. Watson Jr.) on a remote island off the coast of Africa. Originally criticized as being outlandish – not too far from the truth – the film has gained a following over time and has since become considered a cult classic. Often recommended by Patreon members and Decades of Horror fans, it’s finally time for the Grue-Crew to chime in with their thoughts. At the time of this writing, Killdozer is available to stream from Plex. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. The Grue Crew welcome Dave Dreher as guest-host to review the sci-fi/horror 50’s monster flick, Fiend Without a Face (1958). The tagline promises “New Horrors! The script is based on Amelia Reynolds Long’s 1930s short story, “The Thought Monster,” originally published in Weird Tales magazine. A modern remake has been promised in recent times but remains as invisible as the fiends in the first two-thirds of this British B-movie classic. It’s time to head back to horror school with Return to Horror High (1987), a spooky spoof on slasher films. What is this film about? Well, that’d be telling, wouldn’t it? Spanish horror films of the 1970s often hid their social and political commentary within their horror and supernatural shenanigans. Is that what The Blood Spattered Bride (1972) is doing with its loose adaptation of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella “Carmilla?” The story mixes modern elements with a gothic sensibility to craft an odd vampire tale where the characters are all unlikable and the story full of unreliable narrative. Yet, the film is wonderfully shot and earnestly acted, providing ample gore when it wants to. Check out what the Grue-Crew think of this bizarre, often overlooked tale of terror. This little German sci-fi horror B-movie may have slipped past many a monster kid’s radar. In the film, one crazed scientist gets one-upped by an evil scientist who takes not only the first scientist’s life – reducing his life to a head on a plate – but also uses his discoveries to perform some head-swapping shenanigans. This film is strange, bizarre, weird, silly… yet, oddly entertaining. The Grue-Crew has so many thoughts to share regarding The Head (1959). At the time of this writing, The Head can be found streaming from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel, the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Tubi, and Dark Matter TV. The film is currently available on disc as The Head (1959) (Die Nackte und der Satan) [Blu-Ray, Reg.A/B/C Import – Germany] from Anolis. (NOTE: Currently, all of the streaming options are the American version with roughly five minutes cut from the runtime, music substitutions, and English dubbing as the only language option. The Blu-ray has German and English language and subtitle options, the original music, and a commentary by Tim Lucas. The German language version delivers far more emotional impact to the viewer while the English dubbing comes off as a bit flat with awkward and simplified phrasing. And since the music is one of the attractions for me, the Blu-ray is a far better experience, although a bit pricey. – JLM) Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. A cult favorite, Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive may be remembered more for the iconic “Green Goblin” killer truck and the awesome AC/DC soundtrack than the film itself. Admit it. Fulci displays only a hint of the gore and bizarre narratives he would embrace in the decade to come, opting to stick to a fairly straightforward, supernatural-infused, murder mystery where psychic Jennifer O’Neill witnesses visions of a deadly and bloody murder. Of course, twists and turns follow each new discovery as she follows the clues to the shocking conclusion. At the time of this writing, The Psychic is available to stream from Kanopy, Tubi, and Popcornflix. The movie is available on disc as a Blu-ray from Scorpion Releasing. In case you’re interested, here are the other Fulci films Decades of Horror has covered:

Who let the dog out? This incarnation of the 80s Grue Crew did, for their 100th episode together and for this year’s Halloween episode. For the occasions, they dip back into the Stephen King well for one of the trio of his films released in 1983: Cujo. Unleash the terror! Despite the puns, this film has a lot going for it. Director Lewis Teague gets powerful performances from Dee Wallace and Danny Pintauro that make Cujo a truly terrifying and heartwrenching movie. And then, there’s that rabid giant of a dog! Whether you remember it as The Parasite Murders or They Came from Within, David Cronenberg’s early horror film from 1975, Shivers, is one of cinematic curiosity, taboo/body-horror, and skin-crawling terror. Produced by Ivan Reitman, the film features the beautiful Lynn Lowry and the stunning Barbara Steele along with character actor supreme Joe Silver with the calm, cool, and collected Paul Hampton in the lead. Oh, yeah, and dozens – if not hundreds – of sleazy, slimy, fat, worm-like mind-altering monsters. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr – as they try to answer the question, “What’s up with Luther the Geek (1989)?” (Hint: The answer is not, “Chicken butt.”) Decades of Horror 1980s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! Writer/director Carlton J. Albright’s Luther the Geek is truly a freak show! The Grue-Crew dives into this often overlooked low-budget, gory splatter-fest. Does Luther the Geek disappoint or does it deliver the goods? Jeff, Chad, and Bill bravely explore the ghastly, gruesome slasher. Will they survive? Will they come out clucking like chickens? Will they go shopping for sharpened, metal dentures? Will they have an unnatural craving for chicken? Or even people? At the time of this writing, Luther the Geek is available for streaming from Peacock, Tubi, Crackle, and Amazon PPV. It is also available on physical media in Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome. As it turns out, The DoH 80s Grue Crew has covered Carlton Albright’s complete filmography as a writer and/or director. In the Seventies, Hammer Films struggled to find its way as horror films moved away from gothic horror into modern-day terrors; however, the company famous for Dracula and Frankenstein did earn some success with a trio of films referred to as The Karnstein Trilogy. The Grue Crew settles in to revisit the middle entry, Lust for a Vampire, which follows Vampire Lovers (1970) and leads into Twins of Evil (1971). Unfortunately, the film was plagued with misfortune from the onset: both Peter Cushing and Ingrid Pitt refused to return; the original director, Terence Fisher, suffered injuries when he was hit by a car and was replaced at the last minute by Jimmy Sangster; the director and the writer clashed with producers who insisted on including the pop song “Strange Love.” Even co-star Ralph Bates called the feature, “One of the worst films ever made.” Certainly, there must be some highlights. Certainly… At the time of this writing, Lust for a Vampire is available to stream from Shudder, AMC+, Tubi, and Flix Fling. The movie is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Shout! Factory. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. “I find it difficult to believe that a human being can change himself into a bat, or that by feeding upon the blood of the living he can obtain eternal life. But what has this discussion to do with us, Baron Latos?” Watch and learn, grasshopper. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, Doc Rotten, and Jeff Mohr – as they travel to a house that’s a bit crowded … with monsters! Yes, they’re in Universal’s House of Dracula (1945)! Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! ANNOUNCEMENT
Ah, the Universal Monsters! Who doesn’t want to sit down with the classic Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, and the Wolf Man on any given Saturday afternoon? Many Monster Kids consider this episode’s film, House of Dracula (1945), the canonical end of the famous monsters’ original cinematic run; however, others will continue to include Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein (1948) into the mix, happily! Either way, director Erle C. Kenton’s third film featuring the Monster of Frankenstein is a fun, enjoyable romp regardless of how silly and overly convenient the plot remains. Lon Chaney Jr., John Carradine, and Glenn Strange all return as the Wolf Man, Count Dracula, and Frankenstein’s Monster respectively, each providing the best performances possible given the circumstances. Onslow Stevens, along with co-stars Martha O’Driscoll and Jane Adams, wonderfully provide the strands that hold the storylines together. Throw in Lionel Atwill for good measure and it’s a tried-and-true Universal Monster “house” feature. Grab your popcorn and large soda and join the Grue-Crew as they catch up with the shenanigans. At the time of this writing, House of Dracula is available to stream from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel, the Classic Horror Movie Channel, and the Wicked Horror TV Channel, as well as a variety of PPV sites. In terms of physical media, the film is available in Blu-ray format as part of Dracula: Complete Legacy Collection, Frankenstein: Complete Legacy Collection, The Wolf Man: Complete Legacy Collection, and Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection. The Grue-Crew and guest host effects artist Ralph Miller III (who worked on the film’s effects under the supervision of John Carl Buechler), take a look at the often overlooked Stuart Gordon film Dolls (1987). The film is produced by Brian Yuzna and Charles Band for Band’s Empire Pictures, and, wheeee, is this film a lot of fun! “They Walk. They Talk. They Kill.” And, the more the Dolls do so, the more entertaining it becomes. John Carl Buechler handles the special makeup effects and David Allen takes care of the stop-motion animation duties. The Grue Crew proudly welcomes Dirk Rogers to guest host on Decades of Horror 1970s to cover one of Santos Ellin, Jr.’s favorite films and favorite filmmakers with Three on a Meathook (1972) from director William Girdler. Is it a slasher? Is it a mystery? Is it a “meat movie?” Yes, yes, and yes. Take a look at an early effort from the man behind The Manitou (1978), Grizzly (1976), and Day of the Animals (1977). While the film exposes the director’s lack of experience and might be a chore to sit through, it displays his passion and talent for film and the genre and may hold a surprise or two. And, yes, the discussion is longer than the film. Check out these other Decades of Horror 1970s episodes on films directed by William Girdler:

Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, Doc Rotten, and Jeff Mohr – as they visit the Horror Hotel as depicted in John Llewellyn Moxey’s The City of the Dead (1960) and frequented by Christopher Lee. Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! ANNOUNCEMENT
Known as Horror Hotel in the States, Milton Subotsky (along with George Baxt) pens an atmospheric, creepy tale of witches, curses, and murder with The City of the Dead (1960). The film is a production of Vulcan Films (a precursor to Amicus Productions, the studio which continually challenged Hammer Films) and features a charismatic and chilling performance from Christopher Lee. The B&W cinematography by Desmond Dickinson is gorgeous, rivaling that of early Mario Bava, making the movie worth a watch on these merits alone. In fact, the entire cast is up to the task with the script revealing the influence of Subotsky’s favorite author, Robert Bloch (especially his novel Psycho, published in 1959) right down to the story’s twist and shock-ending. As Grue Believers certainly recall, director John Moxey is the talent behind the seventies classic, The Night Stalker (1972). You don’t want to miss this. At the time of this writing, The City of the Dead is available for streaming from Kanopy and Tubi as well as other free streaming sources. The film is also available as a Blu-ray disc from VCI Video. Are you ready to explore a little-known (at least, State-side) Mexican, horror film from director Carlos Enrique Taboada? If so, prepare yourself for the 80s Grue-Crew review of Poison for the Fairies. Embedded in a world of folk tales and witchcraft and nominated for ten Ariel Awards (Mexico’s version of the Oscars) and winner of five ( including best picture, writer, and director), this film is a slow burn with interesting directorial choices, equally interesting cinematography, and a disturbing (or satisfying?) conclusion. Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! ANNOUNCEMENT
Who’s ready for some early Roger Corman-directed, drive-in monster movie madness? Oh, yes! Does it get any more “signature 1950s creature feature” than The Wasp Woman? Short run time, straightforward direction, thin but interesting plot, and crappy-yet-delightfully-campy monster make-up: it all adds up to a good time. This is especially true if you’re a monster kid through and through. Check out the Grue-Crew review and keep your ‘royal jelly’ safely hidden away. At the time of this writing, The Wasp Woman is available for streaming from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Kanopy, Amazon Prime, and several additional free with ads, subscription, and PPV sources. The film is also available as a Blu-ray disc from Scream Factory! Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Jeff, is It Came From Outer Space (1953), directed by Jack Arnold, starring Richard Carlson, Barbara Rush, and some one-big-eyed extraterrestrials with strange abilities. “You killed my Bogie! Not with your hands. You had your little demon do it for you.” Her “Bogie” and his “little demon?” That’s a new one. Never heard them called that before. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr – as they go talk-about with Monkey Shines (1988), one of George Romero’s studio efforts. Decades of Horror 1980s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel!
George A. Romero writes and directs Monkey Shines, an adaptation of Michael Stewart’s 1983 British novel of the same title. Despite the monkey with the clapping cymbals on the poster, this movie has nothing to do with Stephin King. An excellent cast (Jason Beghe, John Pankow, Kate McNeil, Joyce Van Patten, Christine Forrest, Stephen Root, Janine Turner, and Stanley Tucci) and detailed storytelling that crosses all the t’s and almost dots all the i’s, might just make this work. And beware if you have a phobia regarding monkeys with sharp objects! You’ve been warned. At the time of this writing, Monkey Shines is available to stream from Tubi, Pluto TV, and multiple PPV sources. Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be The Incubus (1981) from the novel by Ray Russell [Mr. Sardonicaus (1961) and X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963)] and starring John Cassavetes. “The Old Ones are not truly dead. They only sleep. It is a dreamless oblivion, stretching on and on towards vast eternity!” Eternal, dreamless oblivion? That’s a hard pass. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they enroll at Miskatonic University to study The Dunwich Horror (1970). Decades of Horror 1970s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel!
Set your H.P. Lovecraft expectations aside and you just might enjoy The Dunwich Horror. The film features a great cast, including Sandra Dee, Dean Stockwell, Ed Begley, Lloyd Bochner, Sam Jaffe, and Talia Shire. While the results may not be 100% successful, the cinematography looks spectacular, the often cliché visual effects are used creatively, and the direction is spot on. Could a 1970 film adapt Lovecraft more faithfully at that time? It’s hard to say. Lovecraft is a tricky beast to translate cinematically. Regardless, the poster from Reynold Brown is phenomenal. Check out what the Grue-Crew has to say. Enjoy! At the time of this writing, The Dunwich Horror is available to stream free with ads from PlutoTV and PPV from Amazon and Apple TV. The film is also available as a Blu-ray from Arrow Video. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the Grue-Crew change it up for their next episode with a bit of a treat, welcoming director John D. Hancock to discuss his first feature film, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971), and of course other aspects of his career. This will be fun! A young Michael Landon, just a few years before rising to fame as “Little Joe” Cartwright in Bonanza, stars as Tony Rivers, a troubled teen struggling with anger management. Whit Bissell is featured as Dr. Alfred Brandon, a psychologist (or mad scientist) with ulterior motives. Yes! Oh, yes, indeed! It’s the AIP/Herman Cohen campy classic, I Was a Teenage Werewolf. The Grue-Crew is in full Drive-In Theater mode for this one. High-quality versions of I Was a Teenage Werewolf, streaming or physical media, are not available, but there is a reason. Susan Hart, the actress and widow of AIP co-founder James Nicholson, owns the rights to eleven AIP films outright: It Conquered the World (1956) and its remake Zontar, The Thing from Venus (1966); Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957) and its remake The Eye Creatures (1965); I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957); I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957); The Amazing Colossal Man (1957); Terror from the Year 5000 (1958); Apache Woman (1955); The Oklahoma Woman (1956); and Naked Paradise (1957). She frequently negotiates rights for merchandise and theatrical showings, but physical media has not been updated for release in decades. You can, however, purchase a VHS tape of the movie. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Chad, is The Wasp Woman (1959). It’s time for another 1980s feature from director Dario Argento with a return to the Giallo sub-genre. The film is Tenebrae – or Tenebre (original title) or Ténèbres (French) – and features Anthony Franciosa, John Saxon, and Daria Nicolodi. Argento was inspired by a series of incidents that saw an obsessed fan telephone the director to criticize him for the damaging psychological effects of his previous work. The telephone calls culminated in death threats towards Argento, who channeled the experience into the writing of Tenebrae with a double helix of a plot. At the time of this writing, Tenebrae is available to stream from Wicked Horror TV, Shudder, Kanopy, and Plex. It is also available on Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD from Synapse Films. This is the Decades of Horror Grue Crews’ xth encounter with Argento. Here are their other Argento episodes if you care to check them out.

“Right! Bring in the perverts” They always make for a good police lineup. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they get their Giallo on with Dario Argento’s first shot at directing, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970). Decades of Horror 1970s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel!
With his first feature directorial effort, modern horror master Dario Argento immediately showed off his skill, precision, and artistry. Often looked upon as the rise in popularity for Giallo films, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) would set the bar for all the pre-slasher killer mystery thrillers for over a decade even giving the father of the subgenre, Mario Bava (The Girl Who Too Much, 1963; Blood and Black Lace, 1964), a run for his money. While Argento adapts many influences into his first of a series of films known as the “Animal Trilogy,” along with The Cat o’ Nine Tails (1971) and Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), his film would in turn influence many films for decades to come. Some of those films would be directed by his peers such as Bava and Lucio Fulci. Others who would pay homage would be the likes of Carpenter and de Palma. Jeff, Doc, Bill, and Chad gather to discuss the film, its creators, and its mark on the genre. At the time of this writing, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is available to stream on a multitude of streaming and PPV services including Kanopy, Tubi, Prime Video, and Screambox to name a few. The film is also available as a Blu-ray and as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Arrow Video. Is there anything more terrifying than The Loch Ness Horror (1982)? Absolutely. Regardless, the Grue-Crew head to Scotland via cinema (actually, Lake Tahoe, California . . . sigh) to explore the creature below the surface of Loch Ness. Maybe Chad has it right, “Drowning in a sea of terrible movies…!” With silly puppet monsters, directed by self-proclaimed “schlockmeister” Larry Buchanan, the film includes sad effects, a meandering plot, and questionable acting. Could this be a cult classic? Only Jerry Chandler knows for sure. Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The Grue-Crew return to another Waldemar Daninsky werewolf adventure featuring the Spanish horror icon, Paul Naschy, in The Werewolf and the Yeti (1975, aka La maldición de la bestia, Night of the Howling Beast, The Curse of the Beast). For this installment, Waldemar gets a new “origin” to his cursed lycanthropy. We follow him to Tibet in search of the mysterious and elusive Yeti; instead, he finds a string of monsters and madmen to best before finally facing the Yeti himself: two cannibalistic cavewomen, the villainous Sekkar Khan, and his ruthless bandits. Blood, nudity, and the Wolfman – what else do you need? Maybe, more Yeti? Join the crew as they revisit this misbegotten and misunderstood Naschy gem. At the time of this writing, The Werewolf and the Yeti is available to stream under one of its titles on Tubi, Plex, and Shout! Factory TV. It is also available on Blu-ray from Scream! Factory as part of The Paul Naschy Collection II. Other films in the collection are Hunchback of the Morgue (1973, El jorobado de la Morgue), The Devil’s Possessed (1974, El mariscal del infierno), Exorcism (1975, Exorcismo), and A Dragonfly for Each Corpse (1975, Una libélula para cada muerto). The Grue Crew explores the little-known, yet highly effective, 1952 Finnish horror classic, The White Reindeer. This film is worth seeking out for the cinematography alone. It’s time to return to the gloriously gory realm of the Italian zombie movie. Whoa-boy! Zombie 3 (aka Zombi 3, aka Zombie Flesh Eaters 2), is a sequel to Fulci’s Zombi 2 (1979) in name only, much as Fulci’s Zombi 2 (known as Zombie in the U.S.) is a “sequel” to Romero’s Zombi (1978, known as Dawn of the Dead in the States). Alternate film titles, am I right? Woof. Regardless, Fulci does return to direct this feature but it’s eventually co-directed by Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragrasso when Fulci leaves the Philippines for . . . reasons. What about those reasons? Or the story? Or the locations? Or the effects work? Or the acting? Or the . . . well, you’re just going to have to check out what the 80s Grue Crew have to say about this latterday Fulci effort. Hey, it’s still Fulci which makes it worth a watch in the Decades of Horror book. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they do a ride-along with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee for their last Hammer film together, The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973). It’s time to cover the final pairing of Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee as Count Dracula in Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride! Wait, no… The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973). Two years after the events of Dracula A.D. 1972, Cushing’s Van Helsing discovers Lee’s Dracula is still alive… and living in London… (see what I did there) and is now a wealthy CEO. But, he still has dastardly plans in his cape. Ironically, while this film did not land state-side until 1978 keeping U.S. fans waiting, it is now, sadly, in the public domain… sigh. Regardless, if you watch a sharp HD cut from an original print, you can catch glimpses of the powerhouse horror film company Hammer used to be as Helsing and crew literally use every method possible to dispose of the vampires lurking about. It’s finally time – and by popular demand – to tackle the infamous Frankenstein Island (1981). With movies such as Face of the Screaming Werewolf (1965), The Wild World of Batwoman (1966), or Teenage Zombies (1960) under his belt, are you prepared for a Jerry Warren film from the early Eighties? If you’re a fan of schlocky cult films, of course, you are! Actors Robert Clarke and Katherine Victor are joined by legends Cameron Mitchell and John Carradine in a yarn about an island full of Frankenstein’s sunglasses-wearing zombies. And yeah, Jeff gives a 5-minute monologue on Steve Brodie’s career (just humor him). Enjoy! “I do not belong on this mission, and I want to return to Earth!” Would a free beach ball change your mind? Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they fly into John Carpenter’s first film, Dark Star (1974), which was born as a student project and nurtured into a feature film by Carpenter, co-writer Dan O’Bannon, and executive producer Jack Harris. Decades of Horror 1970s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel!
Here’s a doozy for all of you John Carpenter fans out there. And, let’s not forget Dan O’Bannon and Jack Harris. This is it, John Carpenter’s first directorial effort, straight out of college (literally), the sci-fi comedy, Dark Star (1974). Strong Stanley Kubrick influences abound from Dr. Strangelove… (1964) to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). You don’t have to look too closely to see the elements that leap from this film into Dan O’Bannon’s Alien (1979) script. In fact, Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron, pays homage to this film with its famous knife challenge gag. Rough around the edges for certain, Dark Star still manages to entertain and provide a chuckle or two. Check out what the Grue Crew thinks. Strap in and may the beach ball alien be with you! At the time of this writing, Dark Star is available to stream from most free w/ads, subscription, and PPV sources. It is also available on Blu-ray from VCI Video. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, and Jeff Mohr – as they discover all the known unknowns and the unknown unknowns of Hammer’s X the Unknown (1956). Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel! ANNOUNCEMENT
It’s time to explore early Hammer Sci-fi films with X the Unknown (1956). The film is part of a trilogy of Cold War sci-fi features along with The Quatermass Xperiment (1955, aka The Creeping Unknown) and Quatermass 2 (1957, aka Enemy From Space) that firmly transitioned Hammer from B-movie thrillers to solid horror/sci-fi excellence. The only thing missing is Bernard Quatermass himself, but not without Hammer trying – writer Nigel Kneale would not agree to the use of the character in this film. Regardless, X the Unknown is notable and well worth the watch. Hammer fans will appreciate an early appearance of fan-favorite character actor Michael Ripper as Sergeant Grimsdyke. Let’s see what the Grue-Crew make of directors Leslie Norman’s and Joseph Losey’s, and writer Jimmy Sangster’s black-and-white creepy classic. With this episode, The Classic Era Grue-Crew say adiós a nuestra querida amiga to Whitney Collazo. She has more opportunities than time to pursue them and will be stepping away from her podcast hosting duties. Whitney has participated in over 100 episodes of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era. Grue Believers and Grue-Crew alike will sorely miss her insightful comments, her unique movie choices, and her loving persona. We love you without reservation, Whitney. You will always be welcome here! And if you find a movie you’d like to discuss with us or have a movie you’d like to hear us discuss, just give us a shout-out. Buena suerte, mi querido amigo! Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, the Classic Era Grue-Crew wanted a fitting topic for their 150th episode. They decided on a film often considered one of the best horror films of all time, Rosemary’s Baby (1968), written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on the book by Ira Levin, starring Mia Farrow who is supported by an Oscar-winning performance from Ruth Gordon. The Grue-Crew revisits this fun monster movie from 1984 for this episode of Decades of Horror 1980s. John Heard, Daniel Stern, and Christopher Curry lead the cast in Douglas Cheek’s feature film debut. But the movie is about the creatures and maybe a small cameo from John Goodman… kidding. Check out what the Grue-Crew thinks of this sci-fi/horror classic. At the time of this writing, C.H.U.D. is available to stream from these free-with-ads sites: Roku, Tubi, PlutoTV, Hoopla, Plex; and from these subscription sites: Amazon Prime, Arrow; and of course, there are PPV options. The film is also available as a Blu-ray disc from Arrow Video. Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Wicked City (1987). Why does Bill keep warning the 80s Grue-Crew about the content of this film? Hmmm . . . Please let them know how they’re doing! Join the Grue-Crew as they revisit the campy sci-fi smash-em-up, Death Race 2000 (1975), from Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and director Paul Bartel. The film stars David Carradine (as Frankenstein) opposite pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone (as Joe “Machine Gun” Viterbo) in the dystopian “future” of the year 2000, a time when Americans root for their favorite drivers as they race from New York to New Los Angeles mowing down civilians along the way for points. Machine Gun Viterbo is out for blood while Frankenstein has other plans. Let the shenanigans begin. At the time of this writing, Death Race 2000 is available to stream from Tubi, Popcornflix, Cultpix, and PPV from Apple TV. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Bill, will be Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977), showcasing Ray Harryhausen’s genius, Jane Seymour, Patrick Troughton, and . . . Patrick Wayne? That should be interesting. We want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: comment on the site or email the Decades of Horror 1970s podcast hosts at feedback@gruesomemagazine.com.

Join the Grue-Crew for a very special episode featuring a review of the 1954 BBC TV presentation of Nineteen Eighty-Four (originally an episode of BBC Sunday-Night Theatre) starring Peter Cushing in a break-out role alongside André Morell, Yvonne Mitchell, and Donald Pleasence. The original presentation on December 12, 1954, was controversial and unrecorded. Thankfully for genre fans and Peter Cushing fans alike, BBC programmed a second live show on December 16 which was recorded and remains available today. Check out what the Grue-Crew have to say about this slice of British television history. Let’s just say they were gobsmacked. At the time of this writing, Nineteen Eighty-Four is available to stream from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel and is available as a Blu-ray disc (Playback Region B/2) from BFI. Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Whitney, Even the Wind is Afraid (1968, Hasta el viento tiene miedo), written and directed by Carlos Enrique Taboada, starring Marga López, and credited as having revitalized the Mexican horror genre. Please let them know how they’re doing! Decades of Horror 1980s Join the Crew on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel!
The exploration of horror films from the 1980s continues with the Canadian feature Zombie Nightmare from director Jack Bravman. The cast includes Tia Carrere, Jon Miki Thor, and Shawn Levy. These particular voodoo zombies? The jury is still out. You know you want to know what the Grue-Crew thinks. Oh, yeah… that you do! At the time of this writing, Zombie Nightmare is available to stream on the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Tubi, Night Flight (subs), Arrow (subs), and several PPV options. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be C.H.U.D. (1984). It’s sort of a PG version of Humanoids of the Deep, right? Maybe, kind of? Please let them know how they’re doing!
