“Meat is meat.” Where have you heard that before? Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they relish the chance to dine out with Victor Buono in The Mad Butcher(1971). Pssst! Despite the title, he has a certificate of sanity prominently displayed on his wall.

Decades of Horror 1970s is partnering with the WICKED HORROR TV CHANNEL (https://wickedhorrortv.com/) which now includes video episodes of the podcast and is available on Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, and its online website across all OTT platforms, as well as mobile, tablet, and desktop.

After being released from a mental hospital, Otto returns to his old job as a butcher. He tries to adjust to his new life, but after a bitter argument with his wife, he accidentally kills her. Fearing he will be sent back to the hospital, he grinds up her body and sells it as sausages. The popularity of his new sausage recipe necessitates that others find their way into his butcher’s display case.

If you are a fan of Victor Buono (Batman,1966-68; What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, 1962; Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, 1964), then we have the episode for you. The Mad Butcher (1971) is a unique beast of a film: a dark comedy in the vein of Sweeney Todd. It’s bizarre, clumsy, silly, yet oddly entertaining. And, well, “Meat is Meat,” yes? Check out what the Grue-Crew think of this often-overlooked nugget.

At the time of this writing, The Mad Butcher is available to stream from the Classic Horror Movie Channel and YouTube.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by guest host Gregory Crosby, will be Countess Dracula (1971), another Hammer Film, directed by Peter Sasdy and starring Ingrid Pitt! Be there!

“Sterile?” Yes, sterile! And they weren’t talking about surgical instruments. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, Doc Rotten, and Jeff Mohr – as they blast off to the distant future of… 2024? The movie is Beyond the Time Barrier (1960).

ANNOUNCEMENT
Decades of Horror The Classic Era is partnering with THE CLASSIC SCI-FI MOVIE CHANNEL, THE CLASSIC HORROR MOVIE CHANNEL, and WICKED HORROR TV CHANNEL
Which all now include video episodes of The Classic Era!
Available on Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, Online Website.
Across All OTT platforms, as well as mobile, tablet, and desktop.

In 1960, a military test pilot is caught in a time warp that propels him to the year 2024 where he finds a plague has sterilized the world’s population.

While testing the latest and greatest airship just above the atmosphere, Major William Allison (Robert Clarke) accidentally travels to the apocalyptic future of… 2024! Little did they know. Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) is a low-budget, sci-fi B-picture from director Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934; Detour, 1945) and writer Arthur C. Pierce (The Cosmic Man, 1959; The Human Duplicators, 1965). To Chad’s dismay, the plot includes a lot of walking and talking across a set filled with inverted pyramids. Oh, and the mutants… sigh. Check out what the Grue Crew has to say about this B&W, time-travel trainwreck. Also, stick around for the usual batch of feedback from past episodes.

You might also want to check out these Decades of Horror: The Classic Era episodes:

At the time of this writing, Beyond the Time Barrier is available for streaming from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel, Amazon Prime, and Tubi. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber in the Edgar G. Ulmer Sci-Fi Collection, a trio of films that also includes The Man from Planet X (1951) and The Amazing Transparent Man (1960).

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by guest host Michael Zatz, is The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), another silent scream starring Lon Chaney! Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Incidentally, this will be the Classic Era’s tenth discussion of a silent film.

John Milius (Red Dawn, 1984) directs from a script co-written with Oliver Stone, and look out! “It would be nice just to see one little spurt at the moment of slashing.” A little spurt, you say? Can do. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they take a trip to George A. Romero’s sphere of influence for a movie within a movie within a movie within … well, you get the picture. The movie is called Effects (1979).

While a small film crew are shooting a low-budget horror movie in a house in the woods, the lines between reality and fiction start to blur, and the movie slowly turns into a “snuff” film.

Filmed in 1978 and released the following year, Effects (1979) features Tom Savini (as both actor and special effects guru) and a collection of George A. Romero’s filmmaking friends and colleagues. Oh, yeah, the cast also includes Day of the Dead‘s Captain Rhodes, Joseph Pilato, in a lead role. Shot on a miniscule budget with an ambitious script, the feature contains a story within a story with another movie buried within. The Grue-Crew share their thoughts on all the shenanigans and then read through a hefty amount of feedback. This one has all the goods!

At the time of this writing, Effects is available to stream from Tubi, Screambox, and Arrow, as well as various PPV options. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from AGFA.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Chad, will be The Mad Butcher (1971), aka Lo strangolatore di Vienna, starring Victor Buono. Yikes!

Dracula travels to the American West, intent on making a beautiful ranch owner his next victim. Her fiance, outlaw Billy the Kid, finds out about it and rushes to save her.

The subgenre of horror-westerns is not often used. In 1966, however, Embassy Pictures released a pair of this mixed breed on a groovy double feature. Joining Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter (1966) is tonight’s feature discussion, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula (1966). Both of these genre mashups are directed by William Beaudine. Once again, Dracula is portrayed by John Carradine (House of Frankenstein, 1944; House of Dracula, 1945) and you might also recognize Chuck Courtney, who plays Billy the Kid, from (Pet Sematary, 1989). From there the cast becomes a who’s who of TV and Film Westerns character actors, putting Jeff in his happy place!

Carradine once said this film was “the worst movie he ever acted in.” The Grue-Crew may have other thoughts. Check it out now and let us know what you think of this bizarre and fun blend of genres.

At the time of this writing, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula is available for streaming from several different sources. The Grue Crew found the best resolution on the Classic Horror Movie Channel and Kanopy, but, among others, it can also be found on Tubi and Plex. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.

Decades of Horror 1980s is partnering with the WICKED HORROR TV CHANNEL (https://wickedhorrortv.com/) which now includes video episodes of 1980s and is available on Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, and its online website across all OTT platforms, as well as mobile, tablet, and desktop.

The owner of a closed-down slaughterhouse sets his intellectually disabled psychopathic son on the people who want to take his land away and the unlucky teens who decide to party there.

Ah, Slaughterhouse (1987). “You’ll Never Get Out in One Piece!” is one enticing tagline while the second tagline, “Buddy Has an Axe to Grind. A Big Axe,” may give you a better idea of what you’re in for with this low-budget dark comedy slasher. The Grue Crew chuckles aimlessly at the humor, gags at the gruesome opening shots, and questions the film in general. As Bill says, at least it goes for Texas Chainsaw Massacre instead of Halloween. Snort, snort!

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Conan the Barbarian (1982). You all know what’s best in life, right?
