"I beg of you all not to lose your heads ... in any sense of the word." This is especially true when those about you are losing theirs. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, Jeff Mohr, and listener guest host Jerry Chandler - as they watch some heads being lost and marvel at the stop motion animation world of The Black Scorpion (1957).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 88 – The Black Scorpion (1957)

Volcanic activity frees giant scorpions from the earth who wreak havoc in the rural countryside and eventually threaten Mexico City.

IMDb

The Black Scorpion features stop motion animation as supervised by Willis O’Brien and executed by Pete Peterson, Ralph Hammeras, and Wah Chang, and it does not disappoint in that category. Jerry first saw it before he was ten and it made a lasting impression. Scorpions were a bit of a childhood phobia for Whitney, so understandably, she was “a bit” uncomfortable with the film. Chad spent his childhood capturing scorpions and unsuccessfully trying to verify that the arachnids in The Black Scorpion behaved just as real-life scorpions behaved. He also loved that other creatures were found in the underground world of the giant scorpions. Jeff, too, was a big fan as a child and never missed a chance to catch The Black Scorpion after school.

Your Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew give this somewhat lesser-known giant insect movie a big recommendation for the special effects if for nothing else. As of this writing, The Black Scorpion is available to stream VOD and on physical media as a Blu-ray disc from Warner Brothers.

Chad, Whitney, and Jeff give a big Grue-Crew thank you to Jerry Chandler! They had great fun discussing The Black Scorpion with him and loved his comments on the giant insect subgenre.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. The next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by their next super-secret guest host, will be Peeping Tom (1960).

"For each of man's evils, a special demon exists. You're looking at vengeance; - cruel, devious, pure-as-venom vengeance.” And a fine demon it is! Join your faithful Grue-Crew - Bill Mulligan, Chad Hunt, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr -  as they go in search of the special demon known as Pumpkinhead (1988).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 169 – Pumpkinhead (1988)

After a tragic accident, a man conjures up a towering, vengeful demon called Pumpkinhead to destroy a group of unsuspecting teenagers.

IMDb

Pumpkinhead is Stan Winston’s first film as a director but you would never know it by the result. Crystal has always been impressed with the full-body creature and the great story the film tells. Pumpkinhead is hands-down, Lance Henriksen’s best performance according to Chad, who also places the movie in his top 10 horror movies of all time. Bill is impressed by the relatively unique creation of a new, well-constructed, and well-realized creature, and he also points out Pumpkinhead’s place as a member of the folk horror subgenre. Jeff is thoroughly impressed with the film’s look this time around and finally realizes what a quality film Pumpkinhead is.

If you haven’t seen Pumpkinhead for a while, the Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew strongly recommend this underrated horror gem. As of this writing, the film is available to stream on Amazon Prime and on physical media as a Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray and a Collector's Edition Blu-ray, both from Scream Factory.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

"Spewed from intergalactic space to clutch the planet earth in its ... terror tentacles!” Surely you’re speaking of a giant kisslip cuttlefish! Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they sail to a mystical atoll in the Pacific that is under attack by the Space Amoeba (1970), aka Yog: Monster of Space!

A space probe is infiltrated by alien beings and then crashes on a remote Pacific atoll. A group planning to build a resort hotel land on the island and discover it to be inhabited by giant mutant monsters created by the aliens in an attempt to conquer the world.

IMDb

For your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew, the operative word for Space Amoeba is “fun!” Chad, Bill, and Doc are big Kaiju fans, while in comparison, Jeff is relatively inexperienced. Even so, their comments are pretty universal regarding Yog: Monster from Space. Chad says the sillier the better and if you want silly, you got it with Space Amoeba. According to Bill, it’s not great, but how can you not have fun with big rubber monsters slapping each other. Doc wonders aloud if it is good and then answers his own question: technically no, but it sure is a lot of fun. Jeff agrees with the rest of the crew on how fun Space Amoeba is and he manages to learn something as well as Bill schools him on the difference between amphibians and reptiles.

As long as you’re not looking for a Godzilla (1954) type kaiju film and are out for some good clean fun, your 70s Grue-Crew recommends Space Amoeba. At the time of this writing, the film is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Brian De Palma’s Sisters (1988), chosen by Jeff.

“Love? Oh, I suppose that's what she called it. But it was more like a sickness. A fever that leaves the body burned out and dry.” That’s not most people’s idea of love. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, Jeff Mohr, and listener guest host Bill Gabriel - as they try to figure out who or what is innocent in The Innocents (1961).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 87 – The Innocents (1961)

A young governess for two children becomes convinced that the house and grounds are haunted.

IMDb

The Innocents may be the definitive film version of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw.” Bill recalls which scene gave him a memorable scare when he was a 10-year-old boy and he places The Innocents as one of his top four ghost movies. Jeff is amazed by the cinematography of Freddie Francis and the way he deals with and utilizes Cinemascope’s 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Martin Stephens’ performance as Miles impresses Chad as does the writing, most of which was done by Truman Capote. Whitney is also impressed with the writing and how The Innocents is able to keep the viewer guessing as the ambiguous nature of the story is maintained from beginning to end.

If you haven’t seen The Innocents, you should correct that situation as soon as possible. At this writing. this masterpiece is available to stream on YouTube or on physical media as a Criterion Blu-ray.

Chad, Whitney, and Jeff give a big Grue-Crew thank you to Bill Gabriel! His film pick, research, and passion for the subject made this episode a joy!

"We call them the eight squadrons of death. First, comes the common fly. Lays its eggs in the rotting corpse and thus the cycle begins.” Leave it to Donald Pleasence to deliver a line like that. Join your faithful Grue-Crew - Bill Mulligan, Chad Hunt, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr -  as they survive another trip inside the mind of Dario Argento by way of Phenomena (1985).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 168 – Phenomena (1985)

A young girl, with an amazing ability to communicate with insects, is transferred to an exclusive Swiss boarding school, where her unusual capability might help solve a string of murders.

IMDb

Take Dario Argento’s third film in the 1980s, the second film in Jennifer Connelly’s career, add Daria Nicolodi and Donald Pleasence and what do you get? The answer is Phenomena, not the best but certainly not the worst of Argento’s films. Phenomena features a chimpanzee as a key character and Bill reveals his well-founded fear of chimpanzees. On the other hand, Jeff really dug the image of the chimpanzee wielding a shiny straight razor and bearing its teeth with glee. Chad says he rented the videocassette of Phenomena for no other reason than it included music by Iron Maiden and Motörhead. On the other hand, Crystal thought the music by Motörhead and Iron Maiden doesn’t fit and pulled her out of the film. All hands agree that Phenomena is definitely worth a watch.

We learned of Daria Nicolodi's passing after the recording of this episode and before it was scheduled to be published. During the episode, Bill Mulligan emphatically proclaims his love for her as an actor and a writer. We will most assuredly have much more to say about her in the future.

As of this writing, Phenomena is available to stream on Shudder and Amazon Prime, and as physical media on a Blu-ray from Synapse Films.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Crystal, will be Pumpkinhead (1988), directed by Stan Winston and starring Lance Henrickson.

A group of scientists band together to save the world from mutated killer tomatoes.

IMDb

You knew your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew was going to get to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes sooner or later, and Chad made sure it was sooner. Chad was told it was a horror comedy and discovered it was neither a horror film or a comedy. Despite it being idiotic and dumb, it still holds a special place in his heart. For Jeff, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is a dish best eaten in small servings. The theme song is the best part for Bill. Otherwise, he uses words like terrible, lame, and cringy to describe the film. Doc hated Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and still does and thinks ultimately, it can only be appreciated in its complete cult classic-ness.

The Grue-Crew is understandably divided on this episode’s film, but for lovers of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes or maybe just the cult-film-curious, as of this writing, it can be streamed on Amazon Prime or as physical media on Blu-ray fro MVD Rewind.

“There is no telling what demons, snakes, and monsters live here in this grass.” Demons, monsters, and snakes, oh my! Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, Jeff Mohr, and listener guest host Nick Gadman - as they try to hide in the tall, thick, grass growing everywhere in Onibaba (1964).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 86 – Onibaba (1964)

Two women kill samurais and sell their belongings for a living. While one of them is having an affair with their neighbor, the other woman meets a mysterious samurai wearing a bizarre mask.

IMDb

Kaneto Shindô’s Onibaba made a very big impression on your Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew. Nick picked this one and an excellent pick it is.He expounds on the two strong and well-developed, female characters that dominate the cast of Onibaba. Whitney echoes Nick’s fascination with the “Older Woman” and the “Younger Woman,” but focuses on their relationship, adding perspective from her cultural background. The quality and depth of Onibaba surprises and impresses Chad and he loves how a supernatural aspect enters the story. Jeff is impressed enough that he watched Kunerko (1968), another of Kaneto Shindô’s and loved that as well. Of course, they can’t forget the mask, the one most horror fans recognize even if they haven’t seen Onibaba

It will be obvious that the Grue-Crew highly recommends Onibaba! In the U.S., as of this writing, the film is available to stream from HBOmax and The Criterion Channel or on DVD physical media from Criterion.

Chad, Whitney, and Jeff give a big Grue-Crew thank you to Nick Gadman for his extensive research and insightful contributions to this episode!

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. The next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by their next super-secret guest host, will be The Innocents (1961), based on The Turn of the Screw (1898), the celebrated novella by Henry James that also provided the foundation for the recent Netflix miniseries, The Haunting of Bly Manor

"Don't know why they want to persecute me because I don't talk to women. All women do is laugh, and sing, and say the word 'Pussy'. Y'ask any doctor, and he'll tell you that.” So says the woman on the street. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Bill Mulligan, Chad Hunt, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr -  as they journey into the seedy world of Abel Ferrara's Ms .45 (1981).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 167 – Ms .45 (1981)

A timid and mute seamstress goes insane after being attacked and raped twice in one day, in which she takes to the streets of New York City after dark and randomly shoots men with a .45 caliber pistol.

IMDb

Abel Ferrera’s Ms .45 stars the enigmatic and tragic Zoë Lund. None of your 80s Grue-Crew cares much for rape-revenge movies but Ms .45 is an exception. Bill points out two scenes - the “murder-in-the-round” and the “nun-with-a-gun” scenes - that stand out. Mrs. Nasone (Editta Sherman), the nosy neighbor, and her equally nosy dog tickle Crystal’s funnybone. Chad is impressed with Zoë Lund’s mute performance as Thana throughout the film. How Thana must feel as a mute in the noisy and chaotic world of fashion captures Jeff’s attention.

Your Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew recommend Ms .45 with the possible exception of the rape scenes which, though relatively mild in comparison with films like I Spit on Your Grave, could still trigger some viewers.  Ms .45 is available for streaming on Amazon’s IMDb channel and on physical media as a Drafthouse Blu-ray.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode will be dedicated to Phenomena (1985), written and directed by Dario Argento, starring Jennifer Connelly, Donald Pleasence, and Daria Nicolodi.

The vengeful doctor rises again, seeking the Scrolls of Life in an attempt to resurrect his deceased wife.

IMDb

Dr, Phibes Rises Again is director Robert Fuest’s follow-up to The Abominable Dr. Phibes and some think it is an example of that rare sequel that is better than its predecessor. Bill saw Dr. Phibes Rises Again first and favors it over the first Phibes film, saying it was Saw before Saw came along. Chad dubs himself a big Phibes Fan and points out the personal tension evident between Vincent Price and Robert Quarry in the movie. The original Phibes movie is Jeff’s favorite but he loves the comic interplay between Superintendent Waverly and Inspector Trout in this one. Doc first saw both Phibes films as a double feature and he digs Dr. Phibes Rises Again best and thinks the kills are a little more fun. In the end, he likes them best as a pair.

Of course, the 70s Grue-Crew highly recommends Dr. Phibes Rises Again. At this writing, it is available to stream on Amazon Prime and on Blu-ray disc in The Vincent Price Collection II from Scream Factory.
