It’s all about Maniac: Joe Spinell versus Elijah Wood as co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Thomas Mariani and Vixen discuss the William Lustig 1980 classic and the fascinating new remake from Franck Khalfoun. Then Dave Dreher surprises the entire cast by introducing special effects legend Tom Savini as special guest host to discuss secrets and stories behind the making of the original Maniac, Tom’s career and his thoughts about remakes, zombies and Facebook.

The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast
Episode 8 – Maniac with Tom Savini

The original Maniac (1980) is a cult classic, notorious for its seedy representation of New York at the time, its grimy, sweaty lead and the film’s graphic special effects. The film is dark and morose from the onset and never lets up; there is no hope for its lead as he spirals out of control. Joe Spinell oozes creepy serial killer as he flays  his victims, placing their bloody scalps on a collection of mannequins in his home. Tom Savini provided the realistic and bloody special effects, including a scene where his character has his head blown off.

Alexandre Aja writes and produces the modern remake of Maniac (2013), placing mousy Elijah Wood into the Spinell-originated lead. Franck (P2) Khalfoun steps in to direct. Wood’s version of Frank Zito is far more disturbed with his mommy issue but also far more less imposing. Until he goes in for the kill, that is. Aja’s script builds upon the original’s story improving on the love story between Frank and Anna while the special effects are as visceral and shocking as ever. Maniac turns out to be one of the better remakes in recent years.

Tom Savini surprises the grue-crew but joining in the discussion bringing his take on the original Maniac film, sharing stories about the classic effects, his approach to gore make-up and his encounters with Joe Spinell. Afterwords, Tom discusses remakes, his career, his current crop of films and a tirade or two: his rebuts the famous “Tom Savini is a dick” blog posts and rants about Facebook. It’s an incredible 40 minutes with the Godfather of Gore.

Co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr. and Thomas Mariani boldly go where no HorrorNews.Net podcaster has gone before…deep into space with J.J. Abrams and his latest feature Star Trek Into Darkness with the return of Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones McCoy and the crew of the Enterprise facing the deadly threat of John Harrison also known as…[shut your mouth]. Ah! Spoilers abound as the grue-crew review the sci-fi instant classic. Also, welcome aboard the latest addition to the podcast crew, the lovely Vixen. That’s right, the HorrorNews.Net Podcast now has a female perspective.

Episode 7 – Star Trek Into Darkness

J.J. Abrams returns to the Star Trek franchise one last time before space-jumping over to Disney’s take on the Star Wars universe. Back to the fold are Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin as the crew of the Starship Enterprise. In their sophomore adventure, Kirk and Spock lead the crew on a mission to locate and detain John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), a rogue Starfleet agent who has blown up the archives and murdered a number of high ranking Starfleet officials. The chase takes them right onto the doorstep of the Klingon Empire with Harrison hiding in a remote area of the planet Kronos. The grue-crew recap and review Star Trek Into Darkness discussing its merits as a Star Trek film, its handling of Star Trek cannon and its thinly veiled secrets – yes, the crew dive into spoiler territory.

In this week’s horror news, Dave starts off with the iOS app called Haunting Melissa. This app provides access to an iOS app series of ghost story short films called Haunting Melissa. Next up, Kurt Russell returns to the genre in a horror western called Bone Tomahawk. In horror TV news, NBC has picked up a LOST inspired series called Siberia and FOX has begun promoting this fall’s Sleepy Hollow. Dave closes with yet another spin about the ongoing attempts to get a Ghostbusters 3 movie off the ground. Is Bill Murray involved or not?!

As we welcome new co-host Vixen to the crew, we also share some listener feedback as T.J. from Finland lays into the gang about sticking to horror in the show’s content. Do you agree with T.J.? If so (or if NOT!), be sure to send us some feedback and voice your opinion. Leave us Listener Feedback with the Speakpipe link below or a comment on the blog entry.

Episode 6 – Patrick Rae (Director, Nailbiter) and reviews of Aftershock (Eli Roth)

Patrick Rae, the director of Nailbiter, joins the grue-crew this week to discuss the upcoming release of his latest horror film. When a family is forced off the road during a tornado warning, then take refuge a seemingly abandoned country home where they encounter creatures hidden in the storm. Patrick shares his experience making the film and preparing the film for release along with his first short films that appeared in Fangoria’s Blood Drive DVD.

Aftershock from Eli Roth (who also stars), directed by Nicolás López, came out this weekend. While it is widely available on VOD, it had an dismally small theatrical release. Still, Dave, Santos and Thomas were able to catch the film, sharing their thoughts and reactions to the disaster-horror film.

It’s documentary week at the Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast where co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr. and Thomas Mariani discuss the films Room 237 and My Amityville Horror. In one film, the interviewees try to convince the audience that Stanley Kubrick tried to hide hidden messages into the film The Shining. In the other, Daniel Lutz shares his experiences surviving the terror of the events described within The Amityville Horror. Afterwhich, Dave jumps in with this week’s news.

Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining is thought of as one of the classic horror films and, by many, one of the most frightening. In Room 237 a collection of mega-fans share their theories on many discovered hidden items in the film. Do they spell out Kubrick’s confession of faking the lunar landings? Or do they illustrate the something far more sinister? Santos quickly calls them all out while still enjoying the film.

The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast
Episode 4 – Room 237 & My Amityville Horror

In My Amityville Horror, the effects of surviving the world’s most famous haunting is documented with a series of interviews with a surviving member of the Lutz family. The film is fascinating but Santos once again calls them all out. Brilliant!

Dave steps in with this week’s horror news beginning with the season finale of The Following featuring Kevin Bacon. The show is already renewed and Dave discusses the successes and failures in the final episode of season one. Up next is news of Scream Factory’s Vincent Price BluRay collection release featuring many of  his Poe films and The Abominable Dr. Phibes. The grue-crew are all jazzed to get this set but Doc wonders where is the BluRay for The Tingler. Dave continues with news about the upcoming seasons of True Blood and Dexter. Then the conversation turns to the astounding Wondercon trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Wow! Dave’s recommendation for this week is the trailer for Kane Hodder’s upcoming film Sickle.
