Review: Poltergeist (2015)

The remake that no one wanted - except maybe Doc - finally makes its way into the theaters this weekend. It's Poltergeist, baby. To everyone's surprise no one really hates the film but the film fails to make a lasting impression. The grue-crew tear apart the Sam Raimi produced 2015 version of the Spielberg/Hooper classic. Clowns, trees and angry ghosts now go face to face with Jared Harris. #ThisHouseIsClean

HNR Contest: Arc Entertainment Private Number DVD Giveaway

Horror News Radio is teaming up with Arc Entertainmnet to provide a DVD giveaway of their film PRIVATE NUMBER featuring Judd Nelson, Tom Sizemore, Hal Ozsan & Nicholle Tom. Contest is open to US addresses only. The deadline to enter is June 7, 2015. Check out http://horrornewsradio.com/trivia-privatenumber for more information.

What Have You Been Watching: Tomorrowland (2015)

Thomas and Dave chime in with a review of Brad Bird's Tomorrowland. While the film has ample amounts of optimism and feel-good chest thumping, it wobbles to an explosive and slightly unsatisfying conclusion. Thomas shares all the dirt on the latest film from one of his favorite directors while Dave loves the opening scene regardless of the finale.

Horror News of the Week for 05/25/2015

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week with news of that director Cary Fukunaga exits the latest attempt to translate Stephen Kings's It to cinema. George Romero is poised to take his comic Empire of the Dead to TV. Michael Rooker joins the James Gunn produced and written horror film The Belko Experiment. The trailer for Cooties is finally here. Speaking of trailers, the trailer for Bunny the Killer Thing is also here and it may burn out your retina. Beware.

Airport from 1970 was not the first "disaster film" but it was a monster box office hit that ignited a series of disaster films throughout the Seventies until the spoof Airplane (1980) would put it all to rest 10 years later. With the release of San Andreas (2015), Decades of Horror '70 takes a look at four of the major shakers and movers in this star studded sub-genre: Airport (1970), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Earthquake (1974) and The Towering Inferno (1974). The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Review: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

The HNR grue-crew climb aboard Furiosa's War Machine and speed headlong toward Valhalla screaming the praise of Mad Max: Fury Road. Well, most of the crew, anyways. Doc decides to start the new church of Fury Road while The Black Saint struggles with the plot and character. It's an exciting - and heated - discussion about the fourth Mad Max movie and George Miller's crowning achievement in film. Christopher gives the film 500 miles an hour out of 5. Wowzers!

The HNR grue-crew start off the segment congratulating guest-host Christopher G. Moore on his Best Screen play win at the Crimson Screen Horror Film Festival, as well as taking home Best Director at the Killuride Film Festival the same weekend. Henry Hobson directs Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin in the slow burn zombie drama MAGGIE dividing the Grue-crew between enjoying the film and being bored to tears. Justin Bensonand  and Aaron Moorhead's SPRING succeeds far better with a romantic journey into creature feature, tentacle-filled mayhem. The insanity of Summer blockbusters takes a quick break this week for some quieter horror exploration.

Doc dishes a new plate of HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK with information about a possible return of Dr. Anton Phibes in FOREVER PHIBES, James Caan stepping back into horror with THE WAITING and Jason Voorhees slicing and dicing through MORTAL KOMBAT. Review: Maggie (2015)

To the Black Saint's joy, MAGGIE finally mixes action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger with zombie cinema only to find that the film delivers a more introspective look into the transformation from human to ghoul and its effect on the family dynamic instead. His dreams of a killer Arnie vs Zombie action flick are crushed. Vixen doesn't care and loves the film anyway. Ah, the drama.

What Have You Been Watching: Spring (2015)

The Grue-crew explore one of the best and refreshing creature films of the year, SPRING. Surprisingly not everyone on the show is on board with this film from Justin Bensonand  and Aaron Moorhead featuring Lou Taylor Pucci and Nadia Hilker. It's When Harry Meet Sally blended with Lovecraft. Whatever you do, don't listen to Doc.

Horror News of the Week for 05/04/2015

Doc shares the Horror News of the Week with news of Malcolm McDowell teaming up with William Goldstein the creator/writer of the original Seventies classic, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, with  the upcoming film FOREVER PHIBES. James Caan is returning to horror with the film THE WAITING. Fox releases trailer for two new horror properties THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE and LUCIFER. MTV releases a new Stab filled trailer for their very own SCREAM tv series. Things get really exciting as Thomas recounts playing MORTAL KOMBAT with the Jason Voorhees DLC.

Review: Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

The cast is incredible, packed full of heroes, villains and guest stars. The action is exhausting filling nearly every frame of the latest Marvel film. Avengers: Age of Ultron is king of the box office as Iron Man, Captain America and the gang battle Ultron as played by James Spader. The film also introduces Scarlett Witch, Quicksilver and the Vision and features guest segments with War Machine, the Falcon and Nick Fury. Nothing is left out and the Grue-crew sift through it all ending with the Infinity Gauntlet and Thanos. Woot!

William Marshall returns as Prince Mamuwalde in SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM (1973). Decades of Horror return to early Blacksploitation horror with the AIP sequel to their hit vampire flick Blacula (1972). Along for the ride are Richard Lawson and Pam Grier. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 15 – Scream Blacula Scream (1973)

The director of Count Yorga, Vampire and The Return of Count Yorga, Bob Kelljan , resurrects Dracula' Soul Brother for Scream, Blacula, Scream. "The Black Prince of Shadows Stalks the Earth Again!" promises the tag line while The Black Saint argues the title suggests a far different film. Doc defends the movie enjoying the inclusion of voodoo and more vampirism while the Black Saint insists it is as slow as molasses. Regardless William Marshall owns the roles and keeps the film alive with another wonderful performance.

Some fun dialog:
Pimp, "Your bread, man, all of it! Or are we gonna have to become anti-social and kick your ass?"
Blacula, "I'm sorry, I don't have any 'bread' on me, and as for 'kicking my ass' I'd strongly suggest you give it careful consideration before trying"
