"We have to convince the little housewife out there that the tomato that ate the family pet is not dangerous!” So you’re saying it’s a marketing problem? Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they wade through the tomato pulp & schlock that is Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978).

A group of scientists band together to save the world from mutated killer tomatoes.

IMDb

You knew your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew was going to get to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes sooner or later, and Chad made sure it was sooner. Chad was told it was a horror comedy and discovered it was neither a horror film or a comedy. Despite it being idiotic and dumb, it still holds a special place in his heart. For Jeff, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is a dish best eaten in small servings. The theme song is the best part for Bill. Otherwise, he uses words like terrible, lame, and cringy to describe the film. Doc hated Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and still does and thinks ultimately, it can only be appreciated in its complete cult classic-ness.

The Grue-Crew is understandably divided on this episode’s film, but for lovers of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes or maybe just the cult-film-curious, as of this writing, it can be streamed on Amazon Prime or as physical media on Blu-ray fro MVD Rewind.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Pumpkinhead (1988), chosen by Crystal.

“There is no telling what demons, snakes, and monsters live here in this grass.” Demons, monsters, and snakes, oh my! Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, Jeff Mohr, and listener guest host Nick Gadman - as they try to hide in the tall, thick, grass growing everywhere in Onibaba (1964).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 86 – Onibaba (1964)

Two women kill samurais and sell their belongings for a living. While one of them is having an affair with their neighbor, the other woman meets a mysterious samurai wearing a bizarre mask.

IMDb

Kaneto Shindô’s Onibaba made a very big impression on your Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew. Nick picked this one and an excellent pick it is.He expounds on the two strong and well-developed, female characters that dominate the cast of Onibaba. Whitney echoes Nick’s fascination with the “Older Woman” and the “Younger Woman,” but focuses on their relationship, adding perspective from her cultural background. The quality and depth of Onibaba surprises and impresses Chad and he loves how a supernatural aspect enters the story. Jeff is impressed enough that he watched Kunerko (1968), another of Kaneto Shindô’s and loved that as well. Of course, they can’t forget the mask, the one most horror fans recognize even if they haven’t seen Onibaba

It will be obvious that the Grue-Crew highly recommends Onibaba! In the U.S., as of this writing, the film is available to stream from HBOmax and The Criterion Channel or on DVD physical media from Criterion.

Chad, Whitney, and Jeff give a big Grue-Crew thank you to Nick Gadman for his extensive research and insightful contributions to this episode!

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. The next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by their next super-secret guest host, will be The Innocents (1961), based on The Turn of the Screw (1898), the celebrated novella by Henry James that also provided the foundation for the recent Netflix miniseries, The Haunting of Bly Manor

"Don't know why they want to persecute me because I don't talk to women. All women do is laugh, and sing, and say the word 'Pussy'. Y'ask any doctor, and he'll tell you that.” So says the woman on the street. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Bill Mulligan, Chad Hunt, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr -  as they journey into the seedy world of Abel Ferrara's Ms .45 (1981).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 167 – Ms .45 (1981)

A timid and mute seamstress goes insane after being attacked and raped twice in one day, in which she takes to the streets of New York City after dark and randomly shoots men with a .45 caliber pistol.

IMDb

Abel Ferrera’s Ms .45 stars the enigmatic and tragic Zoë Lund. None of your 80s Grue-Crew cares much for rape-revenge movies but Ms .45 is an exception. Bill points out two scenes - the “murder-in-the-round” and the “nun-with-a-gun” scenes - that stand out. Mrs. Nasone (Editta Sherman), the nosy neighbor, and her equally nosy dog tickle Crystal’s funnybone. Chad is impressed with Zoë Lund’s mute performance as Thana throughout the film. How Thana must feel as a mute in the noisy and chaotic world of fashion captures Jeff’s attention.

Your Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew recommend Ms .45 with the possible exception of the rape scenes which, though relatively mild in comparison with films like I Spit on Your Grave, could still trigger some viewers.  Ms .45 is available for streaming on Amazon’s IMDb channel and on physical media as a Drafthouse Blu-ray.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode will be dedicated to Phenomena (1985), written and directed by Dario Argento, starring Jennifer Connelly, Donald Pleasence, and Daria Nicolodi.

The vengeful doctor rises again, seeking the Scrolls of Life in an attempt to resurrect his deceased wife.

IMDb

Dr, Phibes Rises Again is director Robert Fuest’s follow-up to The Abominable Dr. Phibes and some think it is an example of that rare sequel that is better than its predecessor. Bill saw Dr. Phibes Rises Again first and favors it over the first Phibes film, saying it was Saw before Saw came along. Chad dubs himself a big Phibes Fan and points out the personal tension evident between Vincent Price and Robert Quarry in the movie. The original Phibes movie is Jeff’s favorite but he loves the comic interplay between Superintendent Waverly and Inspector Trout in this one. Doc first saw both Phibes films as a double feature and he digs Dr. Phibes Rises Again best and thinks the kills are a little more fun. In the end, he likes them best as a pair.

Of course, the 70s Grue-Crew highly recommends Dr. Phibes Rises Again. At this writing, it is available to stream on Amazon Prime and on Blu-ray disc in The Vincent Price Collection II from Scream Factory.

“Though horse and carriage are always the same, the driver is not. The last soul to die each year - the one who passes over at the stroke of midnight - is destined to be Death's driver for the following year.” Sounds like a good gig except they left out the “one night is like 100 years” part. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew - Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, Jeff Mohr, and listener guest host Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff - as they travel to Sweden for a silent ride in The Phantom Carriage (1921).

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
Episode 85 – The Phantom Carriage (1921)

On New Year's Eve, the driver of a ghostly carriage forces a drunken man to reflect on his selfish, wasted life.

IMDb

Victor Sjöström’s The Phantom Carriage is a groundbreaking silent film for both its narrative structure and its multiple exposure visual effects. This episode’s Grue-Crew marveled at the depth of the character development. They’re also wowed by the effective use of up to four-layered multiple exposures. The film also incorporates social problems of the times - alcoholism and tuberculosis - that resonate with ills of the current times. Of course, the crew discusses the legendary scene that inspired the “Heeere’s Johnny” scene in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980).

The Grue-Crew universally regard The Phantom Carriage as a remarkable film. It is currently available to stream on the Criterion Channel and on physical media as a Criterion Blu-ray disk.

Chad, Whitney, and Jeff give a big Grue-Crew thank you to Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff for her insightful contributions to this episode … and for reading the book!

"Every year he kills. Right now he's out there. Watching. Waiting. So don't look; he'll see you. Don't breathe; he'll hear you. Don't move; you're dead!” Well, heck. Seems like you’re pretty much screwed no matter what you do. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Bill Mulligan, Chad Hunt, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr -  as they have an encounter with the legendary Cropsey and even more legendary Tom Savini in The Burning (1981).

Decades of Horror 1980s
Episode 166 – The Burning (1981)

A former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, lurks around an upstate New York summer camp bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement.

IMDb

The Burning is often thought of as a response to the success of Friday the 13th (1980), but there’s some argument that it was written before the first chapter in Jason’s saga. Either way, your 1980s Grue-Crew sees it as a somewhat paler imitation with some exceptions. Crystal likes the time spent on character development but wishes it was spread out a little rather than consuming the first half of The Burning. All the running through the woods was very unrealistic for Chad and led to the frequent use of the 10-second advance function. Bill was upset with the “rowing-the-raft-upstream-without-any-real-paddles” plot device, wondering what they were thinking. Jeff notices the editor is Jack Sholder, who later directed Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985).

According to the Grue-Crew, the best reasons for watching The Burning are Tom Savini’s usual stellar work and the first movie roles for Holly Hunter, Fisher Stevens, and Jason Alexander. At this writing, The Burning is available on a Scream Factory Blu-Ray Disc.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode will be dedicated to Ms .45 (1981), directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Zoë Lund (as Zoë Tamerlis).

Four friends are attacked by a demon while on a picnic, due to possession of a tome of mystic information. Told in flashbacks by the sole survivor.

IMDb

A group of people with little or no experience decided to make a movie and they called it Equinox. What they did know how to do were special effects and stop motion animation. The people who worked on it became some of the most legendary special effects artists in movies and had shelves of Oscars to prove it. Bill even calls it one of the greatest movies ever made, professing it changed his life. Jeff gets into the differences between the original cut and the longer theatrical version with the additional footage that was shot. The whole idea of a book opening the door into the unknown intrigued Chad and he loves Equinox! Doc was not impressed the first time he saw the film but came to really respect the forced perspective and the stop motion animation elements.

The more the 70s Grue-Crew talks about Equinox, the more they are rendered dumbstruck by the cutting edge nature of the special and visual effects and they give it their highest recommendation. If you haven’t seen it, please do so now!

As of this writing, it is currently available to stream on HBOmax, the Criterion Channel, and Kanopy. Equinox is also currently available on physical media from Criterion.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972).
