Kick-Ass 2 is yet another Summer film that has the grue-crew divided on their opinions with not everyone on board enjoying the return of Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl and Chris D'Amico. Co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Thomas Mariani and Vixen recap and review the graphic, brutal and funny super-hero film. We also have Jay Lee, the director of Alyce Kills, joining us to discuss his film out on DVD August, 20, 2013. Dave fires up the crypt-keepers with the horror news of the week and Doc has another contest to share.

0:02:46 - Kick-Ass 2 recap and review
Kick-Ass 2
, based on the further adventures of the characters created by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr., continues to explore what would happen if a teenager decided to become a superhero in the real world, amplifying the violence, consequences and gore. Aaron Taylor-Johnson returns as Kick-Ass and Chloe Grace Moretz reprises her role as Hit-Girl. While Hit-Girl all but owns the movie, the amazonian-sized Mother Russia threatens to steal the entire picture. Brilliant! In a rare turn of events, Santos is the one who praises the film the most from the crew while Vixen cannot hold back her disdain. It's a lively discussion about the film.

0:32:22 - Interview with Jay Lee, director of Alyce Kills
This week we have an Interview with Jay Lee, the director of Alyce Kills; the unrated DVD is out August 20, 2013. The film explores a dark downward spiral of a young woman who tries to cover up the tragic events that lead to the death of her roommate. The more the fingers of lies and deceit close their grip, the more unhinged Alyce becomes until she fully embraces the evil that blossoms in a gory, bloody night of horror. Jay Lee speaks with Doc and Dave about the origins of the film, casting Jane Dornfeld as Alyce and the significance of Alice in Wonderland to the plot.

0:54:48 - Horror news of the week
Dave Dreher’s horror news of the week begins with the extensive Blu-ray documentary collection about Friday the 13th series of films called Crystal Lake Memories. This is followed by the grue-crew trying to make out what the heck The Stranger teaser trailer from J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot is actually all about. Thomas is especially interested in Dave's news about Escape from Tomorrow about a man on the brink of insanity when he receives bad news while visiting a Disney theme park. The extended Nightbreed re-cut from Clive Barker's script gets an official name: Nightbreed the extended director's cut. Look for it soon from Scream Factory. Dave ends the news with the sales trailer and poster from Timur Bekmambetov's Squirrels. Doc steps in with more news about HorrorNews.Net presents Dead Afterlife, including the launch of their IndieGoGo site.

Elysium, it is either the best or worst science fiction summer film of 2013. Co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Thomas Mariani and Vixen debate the good, the bad and god-awful with Neill Blomkamp's follow up to District 9. Before the grue-crew lash, loath and love the film starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley, the guys (and gal) are joined by Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka from Midnight Syndicate to discuss their latest CD, Monsters of Legend. After all the thrills settle down, Dave rejuvenates the crypt-keepers with the horror news of the week and Doc has another contest to share.

Episode 19 – Elysium and Midnight Syndicate interview
Subscribe – iTunes – Facebook Group

Midnight Syndicate is a fan-favorite genre band producing fantastic, creepy Halloween and horror movie inspired music for nearly two decades. Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka join the grue-crew to pimp their latest and greatest, Monsters of Legend, an instrumental CD inspired by the horror films from Universal Monsters (and Hammer Films, as we learn during the interview). The duo also discuss their inspirations, the horror films that shaped their childhood and what makes or breaks a good horror sound track. Check out more from Midnight Syndicate at their website, http://www.midnightsyndicate.com/, or their Facebook fan page, https://www.facebook.com/MidnightSyndicate.

Distict 9 is a favorite among the grue-crew and everyone, except maybe Vixen, admits they were eagerly awaiting Neill Blomkamp's follow up to his impressive debut film. Elysium is that film. It's the story of a future impoverished world where the 99% inhabit Earth in shanty-towns while the fortunate and wealthy 1% live in a virus-free, eutopia in the upper atmosphere called Elysium. After a disastrous accident leaving Max (Matt Damon) irradiated with only 5 days to live, the down-on-his-luck anti-hero must team up with a band of smugglers to break into Elysium. Meanwhile, Sharlto Copley steals every scene and Jodie Foster invents a brand new accent. While the reviews and opinions are divisive, everyone agrees the film is beautifully films with impressive visuals and tone. Be sure to check out the book, Elysium: The Art of the Film (by Mark Salisbury) from Titan Books.

Dave Dreher's horror news of the week begins with the sad news of the passing of Karen Black. Mrs. Black is a fondly remembered actress from the Seventies (primarily, but not limited to) in such genre films as Burnt OfferingsDay of the Locust and Trilogy of Terror. Outside of horror, she is known for Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Great Gatsby (1974) and Airport 1975. Dave's news continues with the news, clips and featurettes coming non-stop from the promotion engine supporting Insidious: Chapter 2. He follows that up with news from TV terror, shows like Dracula, Sleepy Hollow, and (gasp) From Dusk Till Dawn. Next is news that Jeffrey Combs and Stuart Gordon are teaming up to bring Combs' one-man play about Edgar Allan Poe, Nevermore, to the big screen. The last bit for this week is about the Evil Dead bikini, a one-of-a-kind product found on Etsy.

Viktor Frankenstein Lives! Frankenstein’s Army unleashes an legion of monsters upon a Russian battalion in Richard Raaphorst’s low-budget horror film. Co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Thomas Mariani and Vixen recap and discuss the film, bizarre creatures and found-footage. After the review, director BJ McDonnell joins the grue-crew to discuss Hatchet III coming out soon on DVD and Blu-ray. Then, Dave brings us the horror news of the week while Doc announced the winner of the TwixtBlu-ray giveaway.

Episode 18 – Frankenstein’s Army and BJ McDonnell (Hatchet III) Interview
Subscribe – iTunes – Facebook Group

Frankenstein’s Army is an astonishing film from a director with a clear vision and an obvious love for horror films and movie monsters. The Zombots in the film are visual nightmares, incredible in their production and design. Viktor Frankenstein played by Karel Roden is insane, but brilliant. Director Richard Raaphorst illustrates what can be done with a small budget and big imagination. The grue-crew are somewhat divided on the film’s story, but they all agree the monsters are incredible with Santos suggesting it may end up on his top 10 horror films of the year.

BJ McDonnell, director of Hatchet III, joins in to talk about the DVD/Blu-ray release of his film about Adam Green’s modern horror icon, Victor Crowley. BJ shares his experiences filming the low budget slasher film in the Louisiana swamps while keeping the alligators out of the mess hall. He provides insight into the Jason-vs-Jason scene where Kane Hodder as Crowley faces off Derek Mears as Hawes. He even talks about filming the reshoots for Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem. It’s a wild and lively conversation with one of the rising stars of modern horror.

Dave chimes in with the Horror News of the Week starting off with the bizarre and confusing trailer for the upcoming release Fright Night 2, the sequel to the Colin Farrell reboot of the classic Fright Night film. None of the stars are returning but some of the dead characters are – Evil Ed. What is going on? Next up is another release of the classic from 1973, The Exorcist. This time in Blu-ray and with a 40th Anniversary annotation. American Horror Story: Coven announces its premiere date, October 9, 2013. There’s a Pet Semetarydocumentary in the works: Unearthed and Untold: The Path to Pet SemetarySharknado is in the news again this week. The film was recently released theatrically for a single midnight showing across the US in 200 theaters, but only draws a couple hundred thousand in return.

CONTEST: The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast has another contest  winner to announce. Matt Metzger of Conway, Arizona is the proud owner of the TWIXT giveaway. Congratulations! Also, if you haven’t heard already, you can join the grue-crew on Facebook on the HorrorNews.Net Podcast group. Join up today. Woot! https://www.facebook.com/groups/HorrorNewsNetPodcast/

Snikt! The Wolverine brings the merry Marvel mutants back to the forefront with the second solo outing for Hugh Jackman as Logan. Co-hosts Doc RottenDave DreherSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Thomas Mariani and Vixen recap and discuss the film, the cast and the director, James Mangold. After the review, screenwriter (and HorrorNews.Net Manager) Mike Joy joins the grue-crew to discuss his upcoming film, DEAD afterlife. And don’t forget to hang around as Doc announces another contest.

The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast
Episode 17 – The Wolverine

Wolverine has been featured in three X-men films (X-Men, X2, X-Men: Last Stand), starred in a solo feature (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and made an impressive cameo in X-Men: First Class. He is also set to appear in the next X-film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, due out Summer 2014. (How many times can Doc write X-Men? Woot!) Combined with The Wolverine, that makes an impressive 7 appearances as everyone’s favorite Canadian adamantium-laced mutant. Dialing back the over-the-top action (at least until the third act), The Wolverine concentrates on the character. It deals with the man coming to terms with his own immortality and his taking the life of the woman he loves, Jean Grey. From there, Logan ends up in Japan based on a popular 1980′s comic book mini-series written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Frank Miller. How does the adaptation compare? How does Jackman do returning to the role yet again? Is Muriko his one true love? All that and bloody claws on this episode of the Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast.

Mike Joy, HorrorNews.Net site manager, chimes in this week with a special interview talking about his upcoming film, DEAD afterlife. Mike shares his insight on the beginnings of developing a script for a horror film, how individuals get attached to the film (director, actors, distributors) and the challenges of financing a low budget film. The film is set to star Bill Oberst, Jr., Michael Berryman, Bill Moseley, Kane Hodder and Austin Idol. The interview gives you a rare peak behind the curtain with the film as it is just being developed. Big things in store for Mike Joy and HorrorNews.Net.
