What Have You Been Watching: Ouija – Dead Snow 2 Red vs Dead – Houses October Built – Book of Life

Happy Halloween 2014. Horror News Radio is celebrating with a packed episode reviewing FOUR new films. PG13 horror crapfest Ouija is first up with giving it a solid ZERO. Oh, my! Dead Snow 2 Red vs Dead has the grue-crew all giddy with its gory silly madness. Found footage films tackle the annual Haunt industry with The Houses October Built. Last up is the animated feature centered around the Mexican Day of the Dead, the brilliant feature Book of Life.

What Have You Been Watching: Busan Internation Film Festival

Joseph Perry returns with another thrilling report from overseas, this week is the second report from the Busan International Film Festival. Joseph share his impression on two kick ass horror films, Exists and Canal. Afterwards, Thomas chimes in with his review of Exists as well.

What Have You Been Watching: Constantine on NBC

Two genres of TV are dominating television screens this fall: horror and super heroes. This week, we get the combination of the two with DC comics supernatural hero, of sorts, Constantine. The Black Saint, Doc and Thomas all share their first impressions and argue over whether the pilot episode succeeds or even has promise for the show to continue past episode five. What?

Horror News of the Week for 10/27/2014

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of Z Nation getting renewed for season two where Dave and Doc continue to try to convince Thomas and The Black Saint that the show is actually really damn good. The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron trailer is here and, holy crap, it is INCREDIBLE! Hanging on the Marvel Movie train, next up is the solid rumor that Benedict Cumberbatch is nearing signing to become Doctor Strange. If we discuss Z Nation, we have to include The Walking Dead as well - a director is attached to the companion series. The film What We Do In the Shadows wraps up this week's Horror News of the Week.

Doc, Dave, Santos and Vixen agree the film is incredible, worth the watch and may make it onto a few top 10 of 2014 lists. Director Eduardo Sanchez joins the show for a look at some behind the scene discussion about Exists, Bigfoot and the horror genre.

Horror News of the Week for 10/20/2014

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of Ryan Murphy inventing Comedy Horror - oh, my - with his latest, upcoming TV show Scream Queen to some groan from the grue-crew. The reaction is mixed about the announcement that George Romero is backing his son's (Cameron) directorial take on a prequel to Night of the Living Dead. Eli Roth is producing a remake of his film Cabin Fever - with the same script. More groans. MTV reveals that there will be no Ghostface in their Scream TV show. Groans continue. As much as we love Scream Factory, it saddens us greatly to discuss the recent screw ups, the one with Nightbreed in particular.

Film Review: Dracula Untold (2014)

Universal begins its attempt to wrangle its stable of "monsters" into a shared property, a share franchise, much like The Avengers, with the release of Dracula Untold. The grue-crew have been dreading this film for sometime, even jokingly labeling the film Dracula Unseen. Aside from Dave, who may have been literally offended by the film, the reviews are surprising positive but with reservations. Horror? No, not at all. Action film? Yeah, Doc and Thomas even suggest it is closer to a superhero film. Twists and turns, baby.

What Have You Been Watching: The Walking Dead Season 5

Terminus, oh, my. That story is continued in the season 5 premiere of The Walking Dead in surprising and exciting ways. With 17 million plus viewers, The Walking Dead kills its start this year with gore, action and powerful emotion. And a surprise or three. Yes, even Thomas was seduced into watching this episode.

What Have You Been Watching: Busan International Film Festival

Joseph Perry returns as the HNR man-on-the-street, or better yet man-abroad, as he provides the first report from the popular Busan International Film Festival. The films covered this week are Live TV from South Korea and Ghost Rituals from Malaysia.

Film Review: Extraterrestrial (2014)

Doc admits to being a fan of The Vicious Brothers, the directing team behind Grave Encounters. They are back with a sci-fi horror mash up with aliens and cabin in the woods blend of action, shocks, gore and humor. The film is called Extraterrestrial featuring the ever popular Michael Ironside in a cameo/supporting role. The film gets a seal of approval from The Black Saint.

Horror News of the Week for 10/13/2014

Dave brings you the Horror News of the Week with news of a potential Resident Evil TV series in the works. Both American Horror Story: Freak Show and The Walking Dead debuted so strongly that each immediately received orders for their next seasons, to no ones surprise. Animal Planet is getting into the zombie craze with a series called The Other Dead. The Following displayed a promo trailer for season 3 at NYCC. The Butchers is looking to bring back all the infamous serial killers in one film.

Monsters Among Us is the title of the first episode of American Horror Story: Freak Show. The show treats its viewers to all kinds of oddities: a woman with two heads, the bearded lady, the tattooed seal boy, the lobster boy and Elsa Mars, cabaret star. Just don't call them Freaks! This season starts off with a slow build paying close attention to Else, Dott and Bette and Jimmy Darling while introducing only a handful of the remaining cast. And then there's Twisty the Clown, quite possibly the most disturbing visual since Pennywise the clown from Stephen King's It.

DC comics takes over Monday nights on FOX this year with entertaining series GOTHAM. Jim and Harvey investigate a series of murders where the victims are attached to a giant weather balloon and launched into the atmosphere to die. The media declares the murderer a vigilante and names him The Balloonman.  All that and more on this week's episode...

The third episode of GOTHAM receives luke warm to negative reviews on this week's Horror News TV Gotham Fan Podcast. While the main focus of the episode is about Balloonman and the implications of the city's first "vigilante," it's the Oswald Cobblepot subplot that has this podcast all excited. Robin Lord Taylor livens up even the most mundane, sluggish episode with his lively, entertaining portrayal of The Penguin. Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore and Joey Fittos discuss the tone, the characters and the future of GOTHAM.

Annabelle (2014)
Expanding the story behind the possessed doll introduced in the intro to The ConjuringAnnabelle tries hard to scare and entertain audiences across the globe. Gauging from the week end box office, the film seems to have struck a chord with horror and film fans. The blandest of bland main characters lumber along until a demon enters into the picture to spice things up. A few good, well orchestrated scenes a great horror film does not make. The grue-crew discuss the successes and failures found in Annabelle.

What Have You Been Watching: Gone Girl
Thomas Mariani jumps in with a review of David Fincher's latest film, Gone Girl. The film receives high praise from Thomas who dances around all the plot twists and surprises in the film. He cautiously discusses deserved Oscar nods and shares it is NOT a date movie!

Horror News of the Week for 10/06/2014
Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of the return of Twin Peaks from David Lynch coming to Showtime in 2016. Annabelle has drawn out Don Mancini to proclaim he wants to make Chuck vs Annabelle. Yeah, right. Vampires and Werewolves attack in Joe Dante's Ombre Amore and no one really cares. The marketing behind ABC's of Death 2 are stirring up a stink with 26 NSFW pictures from the film, one for each segment. Director Adam Green return with another Happy Halloween short.

Season 1 Episode 2 – Selina Kyle

The second episode of GOTHAM receives mixed but positive reviews on this week's Horror News TV Gotham Fan Podcast. While the uneven tones and cross between goofball villains (Lili Taylor and Frank Whaley ) and dark turns (13 year old Kyle claws out a man's eyes) confuse the hosts, the fascinating and entertaining turn from Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot (AKA The Penquin) is a winning highlight of the show. Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore and Joey Fittos discuss the tone, the characters and the future of GOTHAM.

The Sacrament (2013) has its roots grounded firmly in the true story surrounding the Jonestown tragedy from 1978. The similarities have many of the HNR grue-crew scratching their heads wondering what the film's director Ti West is really up to. The discussion gets heated beginning with an explanation of what happened to covering The Guest.

Doc shares the horror news of the week with news of The Walking Dead companion series, American Horror Story Freak Show and Five Nights at Freddy's. Doc and Santos discuss Mutantis. Just what the hell is Mutantis?

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week!  This week we announce that it is time to announce another contest to win a fantastic Halloween mask from Ghoulish Productions and we have the winner of Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Hannibal Season 2 DVD giveaway prize pack.

The Sacrament (2013)
Ti West is a controversial film maker around the HNR offices. His entries in the anthology films The ABC's of Death and VHS are responsible for some of the rockiest reviews on the show. While his past films get some love, House of the Devil and The InnkeepersThe Sacrament does not earn many accolades. Even Vixen is hardened by the blatant similarities to Jonestown and the films based on that real life tragedy. Even though Gene Jones does a great job as The Father, the leader of the cult, the story itself never brings anything original to the film. Bah, humbug.

What Have You Been Watching: Mutantis
Doc Rotten and The Black Saint are here to share an experience that defies explanation, the film called Mutantis from Dire Wit Films. Low budget effects, sophomoric humor and a keen sense of self awareness, Mutantis is unlike any film you have ever seen.

Join us this week as we revisit The Entity (1982) from director Sidney J. Furie and writer Frank De Felitta adapting the true tale of Carla Moran who was convinced she was being haunted and abused by a violent, unseen spirit. A shocker in its day, the film lives up to the hype providing scares, thrills and shocking horror. Sure, the ending is bent, but getting there is impressive.

"A Story So Shocking, So Threatening, It Will Frighten You Beyond All Imagination. The ultimate story of supernatural terror! "

The Black Saint (Decades of Horror: 1970s podcast) steps into the Eighties with Doc Rotten and very special guest host, award winning director Christopher G. Moore (Foodie, Disengaged) to discuss the disturbing and controversial film The Entity. Charles Berstein is recognized for his imposing, frightening score and Barbara Hershey delivers an Oscar-worthy performance.

The Entity is an often overlooked haunted house picture due to a combination of its own subject matter and the arrival of the mega-hit juggernaut, Poltergeist. But this film deserves to be remembered and re-watched. Even after 30 years, the effects and the story remain terrifying and unbelievable. The directions, the cinematography and the acting is above par. But, damn, that ending nearly destroys everything. Check out The Black Saint, Christopher G. Moore and Doc Rotten's discussion on this highly volatile film.

Tusk (2014) is Kevin's Smith's second horror comedy with the script germinating from the SModcast podcast: episode 259 The Walrus and The Carpenter. The film may be a bit uneven and controversial but the performance by Michael Parks as Howard Howe has a number of the grue-crew saying he should be considered for an Academy Award...but realize, sadly, it never will.

Dave shares the horror news of the week with news of Universal hiring Noah Hawley (Fargo) to script a Classic Monster flick and Camille Keaton returns for a sequel to I Spit On Your Grave. Doc, Thomas and Santos have all seen The Maze Runner...and they like it. What?

Kevin Smith turns a dare on his popular podcast into a full length feature, Tusk. The film stars Justin Long, Michael Parks, Genesis Rodriguez and Haley Joel Osment where Parks' Howard Howe eyes Justin Long's Wallace Bryton for his horrifying experiments in turning a man into a walrus, a new Mr. Tusk. The reviews are mixed among the grue-crew, Santos loves the films while Vixen shares she was prepared to walk out of the theater. It's a lively conversation with a personal call to action for Kevin Smith from Thomas.

What Have You Been Watching: The Maze Runner
Yes, The Maze Runner is an adaptation of a Young Adult novel, but it is well done, thrilling and features creepy creature effects with the Grievers. Doc Rotten, The Black Saint and Thomas Mariani each saw the film over the weekend and recap the highlights of the film, including some crafty eyebrow acting. Woot!

Horror News of the Week for 09/22/2014
Dave begins the Horror News of the Week with the announcement that Noah Hawley from the Fargo TV series has been hired to write the next film for the revamped Universal Monsters film series. Camille Keaton returns for a sequel to I Spit On Your Grave. Hulu lands J.J. Abrams adaptation of Stephen King's 11/22/63. And Spirit stores spread Halloween cheer to children.

"She Lives. Don't Move. Don't Breathe. She Will Find You." The tag line promises Prophecy (1979) to be the next big "Monster Movie" with director John Frankenheimer behind the camera and David (The Omen) Selzer behind the pen. The film never lives up to that lofty goal but gives it everything it has. The film stars Robert Foxworth, Talia Shire, Armand Assante and Richard Dysart. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s
Episode 5 – Prophecy (1979)

Joining The Black Saint and Doc Rotten once again is North Carolina film maker, Bill Mulligan, who lends his thespian, effects making, screen writing talents to the duo's take on Prophecy. The biggest problem with the film is the mutant bear itself, awkward and a little goofy, it draws more laughs that screams. Isely (Richard Dysart) describes the Katahdin monster was "larger than a dragon with the eyes of a cat" but it is often called the salami bear. Stephen King is known to have referenced the film as one of his favorites, Doc Rotten, The Black Saint and Bill Mulligan re-examine the film to roaring delight and cheep 70s thrills.

An American Werewolf in London is a classic, a must see horror film and one of top examples of horror comedies of all time. Director John Landis is on top of his game with a script he honed for 10 plus years bringing a perfect blend of genres, pacing and timing. Then there is the special effects, the full body transformation of David into the werewolf, brightly lite, all practical and riveting. The film also ties in brilliant use of music, Blue Moon, Bad Moon Rising and Moondance. Despite the music and the laughs, the film is also scary with vicious attacks on the moors and in the London tubes.

The Strain ends on a high note going full tilt creature feature as The Master steps out of the shadows in an important flash back. Getting to this scene, however, has Dave about ready to shot his television set. And he has lots to say about how off this episode is. And why is Eph always making such stupid decisions. C'mon, dude. Doc and Dave have lots to discuss as the recap episode 9 of The Strain.

As always we want your feedback so drop us a line at dave@horrornewstv.com or docrotten@horrornewstv.com and we’ll talk next week as we continue to bring you our 13 nights of fear with HORROR NEWS TV THE STRAIN FAN PODCAST.
