A psychopathic killer terrorizes a babysitter, then returns seven years later to menace her again.

When a Stranger Calls is Jeff’s pick and he is surprised and impressed by nearly everything about the film, giving him a much greater appreciation after this viewing. Bill finds the structure interesting in which Jill Johnson (Carol Kane) is the central character for the first and third acts but disappears during the second act. He also points out that the telephone is almost a character and even though you know the punchline in advance, the first twenty minutes is very effective. This is the film Chad always thinks of when he thinks of Carol Kane and he describes the first twenty minutes as iconic. He goes on to call When a Stranger Calls incredibly scary and, even though there isn’t much blood, pretty gruesome. Doc, too, only remembered the first twenty minutes and is impressed with how well the entire film holds up. He goes so far as to say When a Stranger Calls is a far more important film than he’d given it credit for, calling it a film most horror fans should reconsider.

Attack of the Crab Monsters is Chad’s pick and according to him, there is a lot going on for a movie that is so bad and so corny. In the end, it’s a monster B-movie from Roger Corman with a lot of cool concepts for a giant crab film. Daphne has a lot of fun watching Attack of the Crab Monsters. She loved the strange dialogue and seeing the professor (Russell Johnson) from Gilligan’s Island. Joseph’s mind is blown by how much they tried to shove into a one-hour film, but still, Attack of the Crab Monsters seemed long. Agreeing that the movie is really bad and the crabs are really bad, Jeff still loves Attack of the Crab Monsters. You have to love Russell Johnson trapped on an island and trying to fix the radio long before he takes that fateful three-hour tour.

The population of a small town disappears and is replaced by aliens that chase human flesh for their intergalactic fast-food chain.

Bad Taste is Crystal’s pick and for her, it starts off a little slow, but she loves how it ramps up and thinks it is hilarious. She also loves the aliens, commenting, “I love their butts.” Bad Taste has the feeling of a bunch of friends who got together to make a movie and in that way, reminds Bill of Equinox (1970). He’s amazed at how ambitious the filmmakers were and how impressive the special effects are, especially on its low budget. Chad tells how he used to remove the 2nd-finger-sticker from the box art and give it a strategic placement on other VHS boxes. He calls Bad Taste a great combination of gore, splatter, comedy, and absurd scenarios but he still wishes there were more exploding sheep. Jeff is flabbergasted and flummoxed that Jackson et al stuck with it for four years, calling Bad Taste amazing, amazing, amazing!

An alien scientist and his team are sent to earth from their dying planet to exterminate the human population by unleashing monsters like vampires, werewolves, and mummies in order to inherit the earth.

Doc selected this return to the world of Paul Naschy’s Count Waldemar Daninsky. Bill describes Assignment Terror as a movie with a strong opening, a strong ending, and a long lag in the middle, although he does appreciate the film’s version of a mummy. Chad has a tough time making any sense out of the film and agrees with Bill that the mummy is great, adding that its versions of Frankenstein’s monster and Dracula are horrible. Assignment Terror can’t decide if it wants to be an alien invasion movie or a monster movie according to Jeff, who found it to be a quirky, crappy movie with interesting tidbits. Doc went for the movie with the poster that had the monsters on it and did not like the experience. Although he liked the monsters, he found the middle of Assignment Terror to be slow, boring, and dull.
Assignment Terror is available to stream from multiple sources but the 70s Grue-Crew is unanimous in their recommendation to make the effort to seek out the best quality source. The film is also available on physical media as a Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray from Ronin Flix.

Filmed during the production of King Kong (1933) on some of the same sets with many of the same cast and crew, The Most Dangerous Game tells what has become a very familiar story. Joseph describes the film as being lean, mean, and very well-paced with a story that has become entrenched in popular culture, even as an episode of Gilligan’s Island. Whitney read the original story in fifth grade so seeing the tale play out in The Most Dangerous Game is a treat. She also lauds the addition of a female character, played by Faye Wray, to the story. The Most Dangerous Game is reminiscent of a Saturday afternoon matinee for Daphne and she really liked it. Jeff loves the melodramatic flair of Leslie Banks’ performance as Zaroff and has always been a big fan of Joel McCrea, Faye Wray, and Noble Johnson, so The Most Dangerous Game is right up his alley.
The Most Dangerous Game is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime and HBOmax and as physical media on Blu-ray from Flicker Alley.

The Black Cat is Bill’s pick and he admits to being pleasantly surprised. Even so, he points out the film does come amidst some of Fulci’s best work. Chad really enjoyed The Black Cat, identifying the story and Patrick Magee’s performance as high points. It seemed a little rough at first to Crystal, but The Black Cat did grow on her. She identifies the story as being better than those in many of Fulci’s films and you have to love Patrick Magee and, of course, the cat. Not quite as gruesome as many of Fulci’s films, Jeff wonders why The Black Cat’s most graphic shot is scaled back in the film as opposed to what’s shown in the trailer. The exact nature of the cat is left open to interpretation but the crew tries to nail it down anyway.

Sardu, master of the Theatre of the Macabre, and his assistant Ralphus run a show in which, under the guise of 'magic', they torture and murder people in front of their audience. But what the spectators see as a trick is actually real.

Bloodsucking Freaks. What can they say? Well, Chad says it’s full of wanton destruction, gore, and misogyny, and is the epitome of 70s exploitation. On a similar note, Bill describes watching Bloodsucking Freaks as an ordeal consisting of a series of atrocious scenarios with bad special effects, emphasizing that he would not recommend the film to anyone he likes. Jeff agrees Bloodsucking Freaks has no redeeming value whatsoever, recommending that if you must watch it, choose the Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs treatment. At least that way, you’re able to digest it in 15-minute doses interspersed with interesting and humorous stories about the filmmakers. Finally, repugnant, repulsive, and degenerate are the words Doc uses to describe Bloodsucking Freaks, adding that he was thinking at least we didn’t see anyone’s genitalia cut off, … oops, spoke too soon.

The Hitch-Hiker is Whitney’s pick and a great pick it is. Her reasoning? She wanted to explore the relationship between film noir and horror, it is based on true events (really!), and she wanted to learn more about Ida Lupino. She also loves the aesthetic of the landscape and the characters. Daphne loves the look and feel of The Hitch-Hiker calling it a great, beautiful movie. A videotape from Sinister Cinema was Joseph’s introduction to the film as he made a side trip into films noir during the early 1990s, and he likes The Hitch-Hiker quite a bit. Jeff is a big fan of noir films and loves The Hitch-Hiker for the tension built by the filmmakers. His personal find in this movie is character actor José Torvay. In a small Southern town, a wrongfully killed man exacts revenge from beyond the grave on those who murdered him.

Jeff originally chose The Nest (1987) for this episode but it was not to be. Instead, based on recommendations from several Grue-Believers, he opted for Dark Night of the Scarecrow, a Halloween TV movie directed by Frank De Felitta. Unfortunately, Crystal did not get the message about the movie switch because Jeff neglected to correct the Grue-Crew’s calendar. Doh! Even so, she contributes with questions about Dark Night of the Scarecrow’s story and comments on the excellent cast in this film.
The music is perfect, according to Jeff, and though there isn’t much for onscreen gore, the implied violence in Dark Night of the Scarecrow is chilling. In fact, he watched the film three times and liked it better each time. Bill instantly got into it, calling it his favorite horror-related TV-movie (after The Nightstalker (1972), of course), and he crows about the beautiful print resulting from the restoration for the Blu-ray edition. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a happy surprise for Bill and he highly recommends it. The only one of the Grue-Crew who saw Dark Night of the Scarecrow when it first ran on TV is Chad and he compares it to an extended episode of Tales from the Crypt (1989-1996). This time around, he reveled in the darker undertones he didn’t pick up as a kid and loves the ambiguous conclusion. Chad, Bill, and Jeff all loved the direct cut from the woodchipper to Large Marge (actually Alice Nunn as Mrs. Bunch) dropping a large dollop of red jam onto a white plate.
Your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew highly recommends Dark Night of the Scarecrow. The film is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime and on physical media as a Blu-ray from VCI Video.

The Boys from Brazil is Bill’s pick, but alas, busy summer schedules created conflicts that could not be resolved. Luckily, Daphne was able to join the 1970s Grue-Crew on short notice. However, she was disappointed in The Boys from Brazil, especially with its amazing cast and being based on an Ira Levin novel. Chad didn’t enjoy the film either, calling it boring. He just couldn’t believe the batshit-crazy ending and refers to The Boys from Brazil as an oddity. On the other hand, Jeff loves the film. Being an Ira Levin fan, and having recently seen Gregory Peck in The Omen (1976) and Laurence Olivier as a Nazi doctor in Marathon Man (1976), Jeff thinks he was predisposed to like The Boys from Brazil. Doc splits the difference by admitting he enjoyed the movie even though he didn’t like it. To be clear, Doc enjoyed The Boys from Brazil for the acting and the cast of great character actors, not for the story and the weird ending. He will probably watch it over and over again just for the cast and even though it “zoinks,” he somehow had fun with it.
The Boys from Brazil is currently available on a variety of streaming services and on a Blu-ray disk from Timeless Media.

Rodan is Joseph’s pick and is one of his favorites among the classic kaiju movies. As opposed to later kaiju fare, Joseph likes the more serious nature of this film and appreciates the titular creature’s origin story. Daphne enjoys her first viewing of the Japanese version of Rodan and plentiful miniature work in the film. Whitney likes the color palette used in Rodan and enjoys all the military action. Rodan’s vapor trail tripped Jeff’s trigger and he was all about the boom-boom. He also fails miserably in his efforts to pronounce Rodan correctly. The Classic Era Grue-Crew also delves into the differences between the Japanese and the U.S. versions of Rodan, the voice actors used for dubbing, and the rigors of suit acting.
If you haven’t seen this kaiju gem in a while, now is a great time to check it out again. At the time of this writing, Rodan is available to stream on The Criterion Channel and HBOmax.

A legendary psychopathic murderer stalks a summer camp.

Madman is Chad’s pick even though he admits to not being much of a slasher fan. The character of Madman Marz and his backstory appealed to him, however, along with all the good killing going on. This time around, he also realized Galen Ross, the female lead, has a lead role in Dawn of the Dead (1978). Bill’s not much of a slasher fan either and fails to see the appeal of Madman, calling it a bit generic. Though they are similar in their basic plots, he much prefers The Burning (1981) over Madman. On the other hand, Jeff prefers Madman to The Burning. For him, the action Madman starts off more quickly and is more evenly paced. The music is the rub for Crystal, who labels it among the worst music she’s heard in movies, almost to the point of being infuriating. On the plus side, she loves the non-sex, hot tub sex scene, describing it as hilarious.
None of the Decades of Horror Grue-Crew call Madman a great or even a good movie, but it can be a fun movie, and Madman Marz is something else.

After her daughter's death, wealthy American homemaker Julia Lofting moves to London to restart her life. All seems well until she is haunted by the ghosts of other children while mourning for her own.

The Haunting of Julia, aka Full Circle, is Jeff’s pick and he loves the gothic atmosphere and the surreal feel to the film. Bill identifies The Haunting of Julia as a slow burn, superficially reminiscent of Don’t Look Now (1973), with evidence of a cult following on the internet. Daphne got sucked into the “is-it-or-isn’t-it-supernatural” nature of the story, appreciates the dark place it goes, and loves Mia Farrow’s performance. Mrs. Fludd, the quirky seance conductor, is one of Chad’s favorite characters, and though he agrees The Haunting of Julia is a bit slow, he also thinks the last 15-20 minutes are well worth the wait.
Though your Classic Era Grue-Crew is divided regarding some aspects of the film, they agree that Mia Farrow’s performance and the last act are the best parts of The Haunting of Julia, currently streaming VOD.

Dr. Frankenstein dares to tamper with life and death by creating a human monster out of lifeless body parts.

Michael, our guest host from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel, PlayNow Media, and Found Footage Critic, admits he probably saw Frankenstein when he was far too young. Even the “?” in the opening credit for the monster gave him chills. Daphne credits Frankenstein with getting her into the details of costumes and even patterned her wedding dress as closely as possible after the wedding dress in the film. Guillermo del Toro’s quote on the “fragility and power” of Karloff’s performance resonates with Whitney and she is impressed with how the makeup is at once beautiful and creepy. Edward Van Sloan’s introduction to Frankenstein got Chad wound up as a child and he has come to consider James Whale as a visionary director, ahead of his time. There are so many aspects of Frankenstein that have affected us all, according to Joseph, but this time around, he focuses on the iconic laboratory set design and the wide range of emotions elicited by the film and its characters. Jeff can’t remember his first encounter with Frankenstein, claiming it seems as if we were born with an intrinsic knowledge of the Universal monsters, which Joseph then refers to as “schoolyard legends.”
You know you need to see Frankenstein again and again and again. It’s available in a variety of collections on Blu-ray and on a variety of streaming subscription services or as VOD.

Crystal likes Julian Sands almost as much as she likes a good fog machine, so it came as no surprise that her pick for this episode is Warlock. She also likes the different take that comes from featuring a warlock rather than a witch and still enjoys the film, despite the poor aging makeup effects on Lori Singer’s character. Bill points out that the weak aging effects are not the fault of the makeup effects artists and are the result of the actor’s choice. He also admits he expected a late 80s cheese-fest and his expectations are fulfilled by the cheesy visual special effects necessitated by the budget restrictions. Chad likes Warlock, especially Richard Grant’s and Julian Sands’ performances, but thinks it could be a lot better with a little more money. Jeff liked Warlock when he saw it back in the day and still does, but agrees with the rest of the Grue-Crew that the animated effects are a bit on the cheesy side.
Despite being dated, in particular in terms of animated effects, your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew is glad to have covered Warlock. Currently, Warlock is available VOD and on Blu-ray as part of the Warlock 1-3 Collection from Lionsgate.

A young girl becomes possessed by a woman from a witch’s cult, who seeks vengeance, terror, and confusion around her family and the town folks.

Your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew thought it was time to check out something from Amando de Ossorio other than a film in his infamous “Blind Dead” series, and that’s how they ended up covering Demon Witch Child (aka, The Possessed; aka, La endemoniada) on this episode. Despite loving Tombs of the Blind Dead, Doc quickly recognizes Demon Witch Child as a very poor attempt to cash in on the success of The Exorcist (1973). Despite it being a mess of a movie, he admits he has fun watching it. Chad is a little harsher, in fact, guaran-damn-teeing he will never watch Demon Witch Child again. The only positive thing about a low-budget movie like this, according to Bill, is that you get real-looking people in the roles, leading him to wonder what nightmare would result if the little boy from Burial Ground (1981) and the girl from this film had a child. Jeff thought the so-bad-it-was funny dubbing was hilarious, almost like a “Bad Lip Reading” video.
As you may have guessed, your 70s Grue-Crew can’t recommend Demon Witch Child, unless, of course, you are an Amando de Ossorio completist or your thang is bad dubbing. Seek it out at your own peril.

The Golem is the Classic Era Grue-Crew’s seventh passage into the realm of silent screams. Like many silent films, there are several different versions of The Golem available. Your Grue-Crew focused on the 75-minute restored edition with some discussion on the 102-minute version. Daphne enjoyed The Golem, pointing out how many of its themes have affected subsequent films. Whitney sees it as a magical and beautiful story about a megalomaniac and, oh yeah, you know The Golem is part of the zeitgeist when it’s been featured on an episode of The Simpsons “Halloween Treehouse of Horror.” The film takes Joseph back to the days of clandestinely checking out a book on monster movies from the bookmobile, his first encounter with The Golem. He now loves the movie and had forgotten the size of the rampage on which the creature goes. Chad recalls seeing stills in Famous Monsters of Filmland and now sees the Golem as the first superhero. And as we all know, Chad loves a monster-on-the-rampage film. Jeff is impressed with the village and the sets the filmmakers built and was engrossed with the creature’s mythology.
