After their prison ship sinks in the Caribbean, a group of prisoners and a doctor wash ashore on a seemingly deserted island. They soon discover a strange couple, who invite them to stay at their house. While the prisoners try to plan an escape, the doctor does some investigating, and soon finds out just what the pair are really doing, and why the prisoners keep disappearing mysteriously.

Screamers (aka The Island of the Fishmen, aka L'isola degli uomini pesce, aka Something Waits in the Dark) is Bill’s pick and he is surprised by how much he likes it. He describes it as a Jules Verne/Edgar Rice Burroughs, old-fashioned adventure with some wildly inappropriate gore tacked onto the beginning. Chad’s also a sucker for adventure-type stories and likens Screamers to Doc Savage with monsters or maybe Dr. Moreau meets the Creature. Either way, he calls it a fun watch. Screamers had Crystal at “fog machines,” but she is also impressed with the sets. Like Bill, she likes it a lot more than she thought she would. Jeff favors the original, Italian version but loves the effects in the footage shot for the U.S. release. And the Fishmen are way cool, so say they all.

A comatose hospital patient harasses and kills using his powers of telekinesis to claim his private nurse as his own.

Chad enjoys Patrick even though he is generally not a big fan of telekinesis movies. It got to him when the supposedly comatose Patrick finally turns his head and looks at a nurse. He is also impressed with Susan Penhaligon’s performance as Kathie Jacquard. Bill enjoyed the movie’s weird quirkiness and finds the idea of a monster that doesn’t move throughout the film to be an interesting concept. He also notes that the matron and doctor are the kind of characters you love to hate. The amount of attention given to character development impressed Jeff and he too is a fan of Susan Haligon’s performance. When Doc first saw Patrick as a teenager, he thought it was boring. This time around, however, he finds it to be a mature horror film that delves into its characters.
Patrick is one of the first Ozploitation films to achieve a wide international release and success. Your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew thinks you ought to give it a watch or a rewatch, whatever the case may be. As of this writing, Patrick is available to stream on Shudder and Amazon Prime and as physical media on a Blu-ray from Severin.

A mad doctor conducts ghastly experiments on a remote island in the South Seas, much to the fear and disgust of the shipwrecked sailor who finds himself trapped there.

The first time he saw Island of Lost Souls, Chad was blown away and remembers thinking, “How did they get away with this?” He ranks Charles Laughton’s portrayal of Dr. Moreau right there amongst his favorite horror film villains. Daphne is impressed with the cinematography and the pacing and agrees with Chad that Island of Lost Souls is right up there near the top of her list. For her, it’s also an important film in its treatment of colonialism, science, human cruelty, and passion. Whitney is on board with Daphne’s assessment of Island of Lost Souls as an important film, including the film’s portrayal of a scientist with a god complex tampering with life. She also digs the wild makeup effects. According to Joseph, the film has retained a lot of its shock value, even though it holds back on some of the onscreen violence. He adds that Charles Laughton’s portrayal of Moreau’s madness and perversity alone makes Island of Lost Souls worth the watch. Jeff loves the film’s bizarreness and is captivated by the performances of Laughton, Kathleen Burke, and Bela Lugosi.
The Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew gives Island of Lost Souls the highest recommendation! Unfortunately, at this writing, it is difficult to find a streaming source. The Criterion Blu-ray, however, is still available.

In the small Tennessee town of Oldfield, a historian, who is also the uncle of an executed murderess, relates four horror stories to a reporter: “Stanley” - an elderly man pursues a romance with a younger woman, even to the grave and beyond; “On the Run” - a wounded man on the run from creditors is rescued by a backwoods hermit with the secret to eternal life; "Lovecraft's Traveling Amusements" - a glass-eating carny pays the ultimate price for looking for love on the outside; "Four Soldiers" - Civil War soldiers are held captive by a household of orphans with strange intentions for them.

From a Whisper to a Scream is a dark and twisty anthology featuring Vincent Price in the framing story, supported by recognizable faces leading each of the four segments. Bill first knew of this film as The Offspring, and remarks that it’s an unusually mean-spirited anthology with a helluva cast. He’s also impressed that director Jeff Burr is able to land Vincent Price as the film’s centerpiece, even though it is Burr’s first directorial effort. Crystal enjoyed From a Whisper to a Scream, adding that it pushes boundaries and agreeing with Bill that it’s pretty hardcore in terms of punishment. “What other movie gives you incest, necrophilia, a zombie baby, and child murder?” asks Chad. Along with the nice twists that end each segment, he loves Vincent Price’s Tennessee accent and calls From a Whisper to a Scream a fun, fun movie. Jeff picked the movie after watching Severin’s new Tales of the Uncanny documentary about anthology horror films. For him, From a Whisper to a Scream had the feel of Night Gallery episodes but with far more graphic violence and endings that go one, or even two, steps further than what are found in the 1970s TV series.
The Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew all enjoyed the grizzly nature and twist endings of From a Whisper to a Scream. At the time of this writing, the film can be streamed on Amazon Prime, but unfortunately, the Scream Factory Blu-ray is currently out-of-print.

A string of appalling lust murders shocks the University of Perugia as a sadistic serial killer strangles to death beautiful college girls with a red and black scarf.

Jeff sees several giallo tropes present in Torso and thinks the first hour seemed a bit pedestrian. During the last half-hour, however, the tension really ramped up. Though not a big giallo fan in general, Chad also thinks the first hour is a tough slog, but the third act more than makes up for it. The trailer for Torso is one of Bill’s favorites and he agrees the film’s tone flips about an hour into it. He also gives it credit for being pretty stylistic, especially for the time in which it is released. Doc, however, found himself rather surprised that he likes Torso as much as he does, citing its brutality, the switch in the main character, and the abundance of suspects as reasons why.
The Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew appreciate Torso, some more than others, but they all agree it is worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of giallo films. As of this writing, Torso is available to stream from Shudder and on physical media as a Special Edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

A woman in search of her missing sister uncovers a Satanic cult in New York's Greenwich Village, and finds that they may have something to do with her sibling's random disappearance.

The fourth of nine budget “horror” films produced by Val Lewton for RKO Radio Pictures, The Seventh Victim falls squarely in the atmospheric subgenre of horror film noir. Joseph expresses his love for Val Lewton, film noir, and horror, calling The Seventh Victim a great combination of the three. Whitney appreciates stories with multiple relationships between characters who have more to offer than what is on the surface, and finds such a story in The Seventh Victim. The stunning visuals filled with shadow and unusual camera angles are what captured Daphne’s attention, and, of course, she loved seeing a younger version of the Beav’s dad (Hugh Beaumont). “Pure Lewton” is what Chad calls this amazing example of noir filmmaking, with it’s great mixture of horror and film noir style. Jeff loves how the story puts a naive and innocent main character in a world where everything seems cryptic and no one seems to say what they really mean.
Of course, the Classic Era Grue-Crew gives The Seventh Victim a hearty recommendation. As of this writing, The Seventh Victim can be streamed from Shudder. Other Lewton-RKO films currently on Shudder are Cat People (1942), I Walked with a Zombie (1943), The Leopard Man (1943), Curse of the Cat People (1944), The Body Snatcher (1945), and Isle of the Dead (1945).

In this tongue-in-cheek sequel, the benevolent bog creature falls for the vegetarian, plant-loving daughter of the evil scientist who created him.

This “sequel” to Wes Craven’s original doesn’t measure up to that film or the comic source material. Even though he’s a big Swamp Thing fan and likes the Swamp Thing and creature designs by Carl Fullerton in this one, Chad says The Return of Swamp Thing suffers from superhero-itis, when everyone wants to do a superhero movie but not to good effect, especially when Swampie is not a superhero. According to Bill, once you accept The Return of Swamp Thing is an atrocity, you can enjoy it for its goofy 80s shenanigans. Crystal agrees it’s a horrible, awful movie but it can be entertaining if you just have fun with it and the creatures in Dr. Arkane’s menagerie. Based on the poster, Jeff assumed he was in for camp, good or bad, and he loved the Creedence Clearwater Revival music with the comic graphics in the intro.
Your Decades of Horror 1980s Grue-Crew finds this one to be tough to recommend, but if you’re a Swamp Thing fan, you’ll want to check this one out. As of this writing, The Return of Swamp Thing is available for streaming on Amazon Prime and on a 2-disc Special Edition Blu-ray from Lightyear Video.

Eaten Alive is not one of Tobe Hooper’s better films. Even so, the cast is filled with horror-cred: Marilyn Burns, William Finley, Robert Englund, Carolyn Jones, and Kyle Richards. Jeff loved the cast and is a big fan of Neville Brand’s work, but the crocodile was, at best, suspect. Chad really hated the film. Eaten Alive should be a good film but he wonders if big ideas and available resources were confined by the budget leaving the film with characters being weird for the sake of being weird. Bill reminds us that Tobe Hooper left before production ended and goes on to describe the story as having no narrative, William Finley as being off the wall, and the crocodile as terrible. Having said that, however, he also describes Eaten Alive as interesting in that some of the scenes are beautifully shot. Doc agrees with Chad that there seems to be a vision buried in this movie that doesn’t materialize, making it hard to watch as ideas fail to gel and in the end, it doesn’t work.
Check this puppy out if you are a Tobe Hooper completist or if you want to see Neville Brand chew some scenery and see William Finley chew even more scenery. Eaten Alive is currently available to stream VOD and as physical media on Blu-ray discs from Arrow Video (2-disc Special Edition).

The Bad Seed is Whitney’s pick. She remembers watching it as a child and being shocked at Rhoda’s, the title character’s, behavior. Now, however, she is intrigued by the conflict between the ideas of being born evil and learned behavior. Chad also saw The Bad Seed at a young age and recalls wondering why Rhoda was never disciplined. He has also come to love the movie and its nature vs. nurture concept. In Daphne’s view, The Bad Seed has a very creepy vibe and is populated with some super creepy characters. In particular, she gives praise to Henry Jones for his performance as Leroy. Jeff is impressed by the group of people involved in making The Bad Seed, including the lead actors, director, writers, cinematographer, and an excellent cast of supporting actors.

Twin gynecologists take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman.

Dead Ringers is Crystal’s pick so it should come as no surprise that she loves the film. She thinks it’s beautifully shot, loves Jeremy Irons, and of course, don’t forget … Cronenberg! Bill also loves Jeremy Irons’ performance, going so far as to say he was robbed for not being at least nominated for an Academy Award. Appreciating Dead Ringers more every time he sees it, Chad identifies it as a squirm-inducing, psychological thriller and character study of twins. Jeff is also on the Jeremy Irons bandwagon, lauding his nuanced performance of the twins, but also appreciates Genevieve Bujold’s critical role as the catalyst to the twins’ downfalls. Of course, everyone else agrees with Crystal on how beautiful the cinematography and the production design are.
Dead Ringers is worth a watch and even several rewatches. As of this writing, it is available for streaming on Amazon Prime and as physical media on a Blu-ray disc from Shout Factory.

Damien, the Antichrist, now about to turn thirteen years old, finally learns of his destiny under the guidance of an unholy disciple of Satan. Meanwhile, dark forces begin to eliminate all those who suspect the child's true identity.

Damien: Omen II followed its predecessor, The Omen, by only two years but did not perform near as well at the box office. For Chad, the tone was completely different from The Omen, not having near the dangerous vibe, but it was still a fun watch with great kills. Bill found it to be better than he remembered and though it certainly doesn’t have the memorable imagery from the first one, it does have a great cast and some interesting political manipulations. Jeff also thinks Damien: Omen II is missing something found in The Omen and thought the music, though still by Jerry Goldsmith, fell short of setting the necessary mood. Damien: Omen II is Doc’s pick and he loves this movie! For him, the joy is in the preposterous kills and the excellent cast but he laments that you do not feel the presence of the Antichrist.
As of this writing, Damien: Omen II is available to stream on Hulu and on Blu-ray as part of various packagings of The Omen Collection.

Eyes Without a Face is Daphne’s pick and though she had seen what has become an iconic image of Christiane’s face in the past, she had not viewed the film. Upon viewing, she found the film to be very graphic and unsettling and admits it will take more watches to fully digest. Whitney also had seen the artwork time and time again and finds it interesting that we discussed this film about a traumatized young woman on International Women’s Day. Eyes Without a Face contains one of the most shocking moments in films of the time, but according to Chad, it’s much more than that. He was completely drawn in by Scob’s captivating and heartbreaking performance. Bill announces that Eyes Without a Face is his favorite movie, describing it as one of the saddest and most poetic of films. The ending has always blown him away and he describes the last ten minutes as incredibly beautiful. Its the cinematography that wows Jeff with every scene showcasing meticulous shot construction, creating an almost otherworldly feel.
Suffice it to say, your Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew have each vowed several rewatches of this film in their near and distant futures. Currently, Eyes Without a Face is available to stream on HBOmax and The Criterion Channel and on a Blu-ray disc from the Criterion Collection.

Harold Monroe, an anthropologist from New York University, leads a rescue team into the Amazon rainforest to locate a crew of filmmakers. The crew had gone missing while filming a documentary on local cannibal tribes. When the rescue team is only able to recover the crew's lost cans of film, an American television station wishes to broadcast the footage as a sensationalized television special. Upon viewing the reels, Monroe is appalled by the team's actions and objects to the station's intent to air the documentary.

Bill chose Cannibal Holocaust as the 1970s Grue-Crew’s viewing “pleasure” for this episode even though he doesn’t like the film. In fact, there’s a lot he despises about the movie, but he also thinks it’s a brilliant masterpiece and there are parts of him that love it, it’s so manipulative. It frightened the hell out of Chad, and not in a good way. He knew the animal deaths were real which made him question whether or not the violence to humans was real. It’s a very difficult watch for him, although he understands its importance and influence on other filmmakers. Crystal is not bothered by the gore in Cannibal Holocaust. She adds that although no one can justify the making of Cannibal Holocaust, it can be put into context. The music was very unsettling for Jeff, making the film that much more disturbing. What bothered him the most was the relish with which the characters slaughter animals and assault the indigenous people.
Cannibal Holocaust is not for everyone, or even, not for most people. It is, however, very influential and is one of the earliest movies to incorporate a found footage concept. If you insist on seeing Cannibal Holocaust, it is currently streaming on Shudder and is available on Blu-ray from Grindhouse Releasing.
